Harry Maguire has endured an awful few months. First there was his arrest in Greece, then an appalling start to the season which was typified by his performance in our 6-1 defeat against Tottenahm Hotspur, before getting sent off for England in the Nations League.

Ahead of Saturday night’s game against Newcastle, several journalists asked Solskjaer if he had plans to rest Maguire and take him out of the firing line. The Manchester United manager responded by insisting Maguire was ready to play and had asked to be in contention.

Speaking after the game, Solskjaer sung the praises of his captain.

We were led by a very inspirational captain. There was great resilience inspired by the captain. Great defending. He is in charge and is so calm. Harry scored and led by example. He showed good character, I am happy for him. He had a couple of difficult weeks since he last played for us.

United went a goal behind within the first couple of minutes, had a goal disallowed, missed a penalty, but still came back to win 4-1. Maguire has spoken the team’s strong mentality to win the game despite the set backs.

We showed great character under pressure. We have had a lot of criticism. We now have a tough run with PSG in the champions league but maybe this can help kick us on. We expect to do big things this year, it is just disappointing to start like we have.
