Stat Attack – The Season So Far

Rooney is the top scorer in the Premiership with 20 goals. He equalled the tally of the highest scorer of last season, Nicolas Anelka, after just 23 games.

Only Cesc Fabregas has more assists than Ryan Giggs in the league this season, although Fabregas has had far more minutes on the pitch.

Manchester United have the second best home record in the league, winning 10 of our 12 games and picking up a total of 31 points, 3 less than Chelsea.

Dimitar Berbatov has lost 2 tackles this season, putting him on a par with Robin van Persie. Rooney (5), Drogba (5), Tevez (6) and Dirk Kuyt (16) have all lost more.

Antonio Valencia makes the top ten for his number of assists this season and has scored more goals than James Milner, Aaron Lennon, Ashley Young, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Joe Cole.

Our player with the most fouls to his name is Patrice Evra with 27. 48 players in the league have committed more fouls than him, including Andrey Arshavin, Peter Crouch, Didier Drogba, Kieran Richardson, Carlton Cole and obviously, Kevin Davies.

Manchester United have the best away record in the league, winning 7 of our 12 games on the road and picking up 22 points.

Despite committing just 20 fouls, ranking him 95th, on a par with Dimitar Berbatov, of the most fouls committed this season, Paul Scholes has the second highest number of yellow cards. Tim Cahill, who is 6 fouls short of committing treble the amount of Scholes, has 2 fewer bookings.

Patrice Evra is our most fouled player after being fouled 37 times, which is more than Wright-Phillips, Torres or Tevez.

On average, Manchester United have scored 2.33 goals per game (0.54 more goals per game than last season) which puts them behind Chelsea (2.47 goals a game) and Arsenal (2.50 goals a game).

Last season, 4 of Ronaldo’s 18 goals came from penalties. This season, 4 of Rooney’s 20 goals have come from penalties.

Manchester United have won all 15 games where they have scored first, scoring 48 and conceding 7. They have won just 2 of the 9 games they have played when the opposition scored first.

If games finished at half time, United would be 5th on 38 points. We have secured an additional 15 points in the second half of games.

Only Frank Lampard (71) has created more chances than Antonio Valencia (59) this season.

Manchester United have a better record than any other side against teams in the top half of the table, winning 7 of the 11 games played.

Patrice Evra has played in all 24 of our league games this season.

The most popular time for United to score this season has been between 76 and 90 minutes, with 15 goals being scored in this time. Rooney has scored 5 goals during this time period.

Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov are our most fouled forwards with 22 each.

“Manchester United have won all 15 games where they have scored first, scoring 48 and conceding 7. They have won just 2 of the 9 games they have played when the opposition scored first.”

Man city beat us 2-1 in the carling cup after taking the lead
That wasnt in the league though.

after Fergie subs out the struggling wingers, and or gives rooney a partner to change 4-5-1 to 4-4-2

  4. JD says:

schole’s card to foul ratio being scary high, but thinking back most of them were probably deserved its just a matter of how many cards other people are getting away with in comparison.

  5. stretfordender says:

Interesting reading, Scholes makes his fouls in style, can’t remember complaining too much over his yellows!!

  6. EuroBlue says:

There are three statistics that you fail to mention. One is the League Table, where we see that ManYoo are second best having played one more game than the team on top. Another is 0-3, which is what Chelsea managed at the Emirates. Under the system of mathematics that I learnt at school, that’s better than 1-3. And the third is 1-0, which was the score when ManYoo went to Stamford Bridge. Other than that, yeah, your lot are top banana.

  7. Scott the Red says:

Macheda is god – All these stats are for the league.

Euroblue – You won 3-0 at the Emirates. We conceded a goal there because of a deflection. Don’t be so precious. You haven’t come to Old Trafford yet, you didn’t play for two months without defenders and you beat us 1-0 thanks to Roman paying off the ref – only way to explain that goal being allowed. The fact you are on here suggests you are far more concerned with us than we are with you. I certainly don’t spend my time browsing Chelsea blogs.

If Paul Scholes made 20 tackles, Im surprised he doesnt have 20 yellow cards (or a few reds even) – he makes a 5 yard dash for most tackles and theres a collective breath in the stands and the pubs as we see his 6 studs (sometimes 12 studs if he has seen the red mist) heading towards some poor unfortunates ankle / thigh / midrift / head.

as many have mentioned on this blog, the only time I will be concerned about the team is when SAF retires… he simply knows what it takes to win the premiership… and i would argue that even if the not the best ever tactician, his ability to make a team out of 20 players is by far better than any other manager…

89% of the comments on this thread are about statistics.

    11% are about Euroblue

City have won absolutely nothing in 100% of the last 34 years or nothing whatsoever in the top 34% of the last century.

City has won exactly 0 trophies out of the last 102 attempts or has a 100% fail rate.

As a proportion of money spent against success achieved City is in the bottom 1%

100% of every £1 spent by Manchester City has been wasted on failure.

100% of every £1 spent by Manchester United has led to unequalled success.

This is the most worrying one. I think all of the 5 losses in the league this season we have failed to score in. Hopefully, now that we have somewhat regained our form, we are able to recover after our opponents score first.

On a different note…according to me in the last two games we have played our passing has been much better, than the rest of the season.
We are still pathetic on dead ball situations…can any one tell me do we have a specialist free kick taker in the team…

This is a rubbish stat, I’m afraid. Berbatov and Persie can’t really lose tackles while watching the game from the bench.

  32. mikekelly12 says:

AIG – In the league your right. The only time we’ve scored and lost is against City in the first leg, but that had a lot more to do with the Ref!

no.no one can take decent corners or free kicks.giggs is best of the wasteful lot but then he dosent play every game.firstly our corners must clear the first opposition defender.it is surprising that in such a talented team no one can take decent free kicks or corners.vidics ariel prowess is being wasted

i think nani should take them.sure will do better tham most others

Arsenal are a predicatable team, teams know how to play against us. United used tactics like the small teams do, just defend well and hit on the break but they have class players to exploit this

we just like the possession game and play through teams thats all

Now that Nani has gone from Blunderkid to Wonderkid in three games, I can now believe that even Hargreaves will come good.

Nani has been like a new signing and if Hargreaves came back all awesome and mean with his bionic knees it would be the greatest comeback since that kid Lazarus that used to play left-back for Jerusalem Athletic.

  48. OneUnited says:

Kenyan-Canadian Reds – We had 52% possession overall, we were like the home side. Arsenal probably had about 80% possession in the last 15 minutes as well.

I think John Terry should only be allowed in the England squad if he lets Wayne Bridge fuck his wife a couple of times.

If Wayne Bridge thinks that evens things up then they can shake hands and get on with World Cup preparation.

That would be fair and Terry`s wife looks like the sort of dim-witted slapper that could be talked into anything.

  50. Fze123 says:

Seriously, what is happening with Hargreaves anyway? It would be helpful if someone from Utd came out and reported on how his recovery is going, but no one has said anything for a month. It appears as he will not play at all this season, but what is so puzzling is Fergie’s decision to include him in the Champions League squad. If he now is training with the first team, then they should at least allow him to feature in the reserves games as he has not played for a long while now and a few minutes would be very benificial. It’s sad that a player of his class is on the sidelines. How much more strength and steel would he add to our midfield had he been fit, including his versatility and great attitude.

Sometimes I forget he is a Utd player. I only remember he plays for us when I see pictures of him in training. It really is time for him to be back now.

  51. READ CAREFULLY WHAT I says:

    @fze123

Totally agree mate – when he played for us he was a BIG impact on how much possesion we would have.
He will be such a bonus if/when he returns and we can only hope that SAF knows more than us by including him in the CL squad.
One thing good about SAF is that he does not rush players back until they have had a proper chance to recover.
That is why Keano came back awesome from his cruciate injury and why Alan Shearer was never the same again.
Lets just hope he is using his customary wisdom with Curly Hargreaves.

    I have really missed him.

  52. mikekelly12 says:

November was his initial comeback date. Doesn’t look like things are going to plan.

  53. OneUnited says:

  54. mikekelly12 says:

  55. OTRed says:

Some of those stats especially having the best away record and best record against the top half of the table are a little surprising(in a good way)

  56. Fze123 says:

    @ READ CAREFULLY WHAT I

Back in december we all hoped for his comeback in January, so that he would have had plenty of games which would have prepared him for the knock out stages in the Champions League this month. But sadly he has not played for a year and a half now, so even if he does recover in time for the European games Fergie obviously wouldn’t risk playing him against AC Milan. It’s a shame, because his experience in these type of games would have been a bonus. But we can still hope, as you have said we just have to trust Fergie on this matter. I have missed him too. So I don’t forget how he looks like, I always look at this picture http://images.thecarconnection.com/med/charlie-chaplin-the-gold-rush-1925_100179059_m.jpg. He reminds me of Hargreaves. Rio and Vida will partner each other for the first time in 4 months at the San Siro. I hope they will develop their immediate understanding because it will be a tough game. Unless of course Vida isn’t fit by then…

Was Rio a certain started in the Carling Cup final? I think Fergie would have gone with Brown and Evans anyway. Last season, one game that took its toll on Rio and bubed him out was the 120 minutes against Spurs at Wembley. And of course, 120 minutes against Everton at Wembley didn’t help matters either.

na. dont think being defenders it will affect them that much because they wont have to cover much ground anyways. Also i think given the fact that the Carling Cup is the tournament we are most likely to win SAF will play a full strength team. Last year we had bigger prizes like the league and CL to concentrate(which we in a good position in) so he rested some key players for the FA Cup semis. Cant do it this year as the selection of a full strength team for the carling cup semis against shitty shows. last year he would have played the kids even if it was city. Possibly the early and unexpected exit from the FA Cup had something to dow ith it.

The problem Rio had last season was that he wasn’t protected after he came back in January. In my opinion, he shouldn’t have played those two games at Wembley. This season it’s different for both him and Nemanja. They need games. So in that sense, they will probably start against Villa. I am just wondering if in Fergie’s mind, Brown and Evans deserve a place there because they have played for most of the campaign.

  94. Kings says:

Off topic, just listening to Jason Cundy on sky sports news veheremently defending John Terrys off field actions, even resorting to arguing with the presenters and bringing Tony Blair in to it regarding his decision to go to war with Iraq – what the fuck! He is saying that what he does off the pitch has absolutely nothing to do with him being a captain and saying that other players are just as bad. What an absolute cunt. Oh by the way Terry has requested to be excused from their FA Cup tie with Cardiff as he wants to spend Valentines day with his wife – bless him! Fucking wanker.

they did well against Arsenal but wesley looks very shaky at times and has made some mistakes so i would go with rio and vidic or possibly evans to start with Rio or vidic as evans looks very composed with either of those 2 besides him.

  96. Colbert says:

Evans was great against Arsenal. He’s better than Wes now. But Wes can still do a job at right back since Rafael won’t play every game.

  97. Costas says:

    @AIG

Yeah I agree. Brown and Evans can’t influence each other. They need either Rio or Vida next to them. Ironically, Brown and Evans are considered our regular centre backs this season. They have played more games than Rio and Vidic. And while Rio’s problem is understandable, I still can’t fathom what has happened to Vidic. He played 55 games last season and so far he has played in 18. Makes you wonder if playing so much football in one season takes a toll on your body.

  98. King Eric says:

Kings – Alright pal. I heard that cunt Cundy sticking up for the British Bulldog. Just like the bird beater Collybore was last night. I cannot believe it. If it was a United player the cunt’s would want him banned altogether. The condemnation is nothing like it should be. I heard Perry Groves though arguing with Cundy the fat cunt. Well said Perry.

aig – Hi mate. The exit from the FA Cup is EXACTLY the reason Fergie went with a full strength team and the fact he wanted to shut the noisy neighbours up. We are in a great position in league and have every faith. Hell after Sunday I am sure we can hammer Milan at home. Far too slow to deal with United. Bring it on!

  99. Costas says:

    @Kings

I also believe that footballers are anything but saints and Terry might not be the only one. But, he is the one who was caught in the act. It’s quite simple. If Terry has lost the trust of his teammates, he shouldn’t be captain anymore. I think the players should hold a secret vote to decide whether he should stay as captain. I can’t believe the hysteria in this country when the World Cup is around the corner.

    hi mate.

yes. no doubt we have a great chance of winning the league. however at this stage last season we were on top while this time around we are 4 points behind(which is a great position given our injury problems) and are showing some signs of consistency finally to suggest we can topple the rentboys.i would rather see us dictate terms from the top rather than hope for other teams to slip up so i want us to be on top ASAP

The next 4 weeks will define our season. away games in a row to Villa, everton and Milan and a Carling Cup Final

As for Milan, well it is a European tie and we have a poor record against them so i dont want to be complacent. They have some quality players that can hurt us.One game at a time. For the moment we must concentrate on hammering portsmouth and putting pressure on the rentboys

  101. aig alex is god says:

    Costas

possibly. That could be the reason but should not happen given the fact that Vida is a centreback. I sincerely hope that when VIda comes back now he can play games continuously

The only stat im interested in, is lifting our 19th premiership crown.
ps Any1 catch the paddy show last nite? they compared rooneys goal with ronnys last season with the split screen

On Scholesy, I think the Ref was always bias when Scholes come in a fouls. I am not saying he’s the best tackler LOL! Let’s just see it this way Scholesy is a person who are determine to win the ball no matter what it takes~ Seriously, in comparison to others, more often they get away with it but when it come to Paul its always a straight yellow in Ref’s mind..SAF sum it up perfectly, he get booked because his name is Paul Scholes.

  104. hurr says:

That 2 out 9 when the opponent scored first is really a mentality issue that needs to be improved on. And to Euroblue up there, come back when you’ve won 18. No wait, come back when you’ve won 5 lol.
