Silly me, I take it that is the total for all home games!
City are top. Give a print out of that to the FA and they can hand them the league trophy based on those stats.
Cedars, It’s the summed cost over the season for all home EPL games. Just like the season ticket.
Or is it? Not sure anymore……
these stats are a bit unfair. Sure city are cheaper to get in, but what about the other expenditures associated with attending. Eg: cost of inflatable banana, burger with blue ketchup, obligatory commemorative tattoo, big coat to cover up your city shirt, full frontal lobotomy to make you a city fan etc.
Plus there’s the emotional cost and humiliation of being a bitter. You cant put a price on that.

Hi mate. Just saw your comment. Willie answered it, but there was no way Liverpool were getting that spot. If someone is disqualified from European competition, they are replaced by the team they knocked out. That’s what happened with Dynamo Kiev and Aalborg 16 years ago. In this case, Fenerbahce gained automatic qualification to the group stages because they won the Turkish league. So the only team that could replace them was the runner up in the Turkish league.

Fair point Danny. Barcelona aren’t impenetrable, we saw that the year Inter won it. Our existing players, and youthful ones at that are turning over teams like city and spurs that have international ability. As insignificant as City fans would have you believe, the Community shield was still a massive challenge and we undid them. Completely. Scholes wasn’t world class from the outset, but boy didn’t he become it. I was a little peeved that we didn’t invest in a world-class midfielder initially, thinking we would be lacking that finished article. I am with KR on this. You have to admit that Barca are better than us at the moment, and the difference is the midfield. To be called Barca-loving, or told to “go support Barca”, is frankly, insulting and silly. Sure, Barca can be beaten along the way by us or anybody else, but chances are they will make it to the semi-s, at least. Just like us, by the way. And forget Barca, to be dominant in Europe, we need just that little bit of experienced class in the midfield.
And you know what, SAF knows that – that’s why we tried to sign Sneijder, and probably backed out when he showed himself to be a greedy whatever (rightly so). But SAF, the world and its dog knows that we need that one world class, experienced midfielder. Again, I ask you to be objective and not jump on people and accuse them of being barca-lovers, or not “true” united fans, or not having faith in the team/SAF, for stating what is fairly evident.

I don’t know what constitutes world class in your book, but it’s too broad. There would be hundreds, maybe thousands of world class players if Anderson, Park and Cleverley are. World class surely is among the very best in your position, say top four or five. OR if they did a world cup style squad of 23 men, if you made it you’d be world class. Otherwise it’s empty and any player who has five good games is world class.
Again, have to agree with KR around who is world class. If you look at the team, all positions except central midfield are world class or close to world class.
DeGea – potentially world class (though I would still say the jury is out)

He is more than world class – because in his position and what he does for the team their are not many players like him
He is a unique player in that sense – one cannot compare Fletch to a Xavi or an Iniesta because they are different kinds of players – the introduction of Cleverley has surprisingly bought ball control and greater passing fluidity through the midfield – that doesn’t mean that he is again a Xavi or an Iniesta – but if he can progress – then we would have one hell of a player
Now you couple that with Pogba and Ryan T and suddenly we are onto something – maybe SAF was waiting for this time to bring them in – it’s their time – they will have great days and some days they’ll get bashed but if they have got it then we have nothing else to worry.
After all why knock them? Barca are ahead of us because they have been lucky to develop their youth before ours – now if ours stay the course then the situation will change without a shadow of a doubt
Do we need an experienced midfielder? I would say that if Sneijder wanted to come to United he would have come already – the fact is he doesn’t – the pay packet is more important at Inter than it is at United – and let’s be honest at the moment that is the only incentive for players to move – and this is fucking ridiculous – and fans should be aware of this.
If city are doing it – then who cares – I don’t – players should move to teams because they want to move for them not move because they get to double triple their wages – all nice by the way but then it defies the object of the transfer – and within that respect a team built on harmony is far more important than one built on the highest dollar.

However if every supporter would ask themselves this question ‘What do i want from my team?’ Than I am sure we would get different answers across the board. Some would focus on emulating Barca and bettering them, others would say keep winning the league, do not give a toss about Europe, some might just say a trophy every season, youth coming through and so on…..
I do see where some here are coming from but to speak of only catching Barca is also insulting to the football club and in a way deviating attention from everything the club and its management is doing on all fronts……..This season we are seeing a young team coming through that has already made us drool after just 2 games and the best is yet to come, we have seen academy players break through the first team with success……
Now if I was asked the said question, my answer would be simple…. I just want United to play the United way, I want my team to entertain me, to give me the thrills, the drama and at times the heartache and tears as they have always done….. Whether we come the best club in the world or not I do not care nor is it for me at least any sort of priority….

@ahjs: Spot on…world class for me would be top ten in that position, consistently for a good few seasons. Undroppable for the team, and can walk into starting xi of any of the top clubs. By that definition, the only guys in midfield who can come close are Fletcher (if he can repeat 2009-10 performance consistently for a year or 2) and Anderson (if he can fulfil his potential completely). By that definition, my list of current world class players in MF would be:
Xavi
Iniesta
Sneijder
Schweinsteiger
Essien (when fully fit)
Alonso
Masceranho
DeRossi
…and “just about there” guys like Pastore, etc. As you can see, it’s incredibly difficult to get any one of those guys, and Fergie is probably doing the right thing by waiting till the right guy is available at the right price. But to say that we don’t need such a player is just bravado, and to say that Cleverly is up with those guys is laughable really.
MG – I have had big arguments with one cafe member who clearly is living in fantasy land, and not rating players like cleverly who is still getting to grips with playing for united 40 to 50 games a season. I have said this time and time again, if the deal does not suit the club it will not happen. I made 3 steps on the cafe page onto the collapse of the deal
1 WS seems content at inter, that puts inter in a strong position getting a great fee for WS
2 WS and his representatives still do not want to lower their demands, this is one of 2 major sticking point’s that makes the whole transfer collapse. And to finish it off
3 With the above point as the one of 2 main problems with the transfer, united the club refuse to bend over and give into WS demands. If it does not suit the club (united), then the transfer does not happen.
For me this is what as made united think twice after berbs before last season, and veron’s struggles with united
It seems to me united are murky with WS the type of player that he is. Despite how good WS is, no way are united going to make WS the highest paid player at the club that is not how they do buisness, when he may not fit into how united are set up. Imagine if WS struggles with the pace of the premiership and he is the highest paid player, the next big player united go after will ask for more than WS, this sets a horrible standard

I wouldn’t put De Rossi and Alonso in the world class bracket. Just my opinion of course. Everyone has their definition of what world class is. IMHO, you can have players who are world class at club level, but maybe, or couldn’t achieve that at international level. Cos they played for a lesser country. Like the great George Best, for instance. Giggs as well, I suppose. It’s a great discussion this here, because you’ll get varied opinions on the matter.

Mascehrano has done nothing since the 2008/09 season, and de rossi as gone stale for years, de rossi was not to bright for roma in the 7 1 hammering at OT. Essien I would not call world class, he as been poor for chelsea ever since he moved there. I call essien one of the most overrated midfielders of his generation, he is a poor mans keane and vierra. My opinion on the issue is thats its very complex trying to define world class players really. You can argue about how good some one is technically, but thats not the most important thing for a player to appear great. Its far more important to see how all the parts of the team gel and how to maximise a team’s strengths. United have far better forwards compared to Barca, I am sure most would agree to that, but thats not really true because if you played Villa in the United lineup he would be ten times what he is at Barca. So its about how we utilise a given player. While Ando and Clev might not be the best midfielders in terms of technicality, but thats not important if they do the job that the team needs better. United with much better wingers and strikers and more top heavy game than Barca need the ball to get to the forwards quickly and most of the attacking work is done by them, unlike Barca where the midfield is the be all and end all. I mean who says that Barca need a defender even when Mascherano plays there for god’s sake. Its important for a team to realise its strengths and play as per that. Yes there were mistakes in the 2 finals, but they were not really going to be solved by a single player at all. So thats my take on the issue.
P.S. Xavi and Iniesta think that Carrick is World Class so I guess half of you are wrong haha, just joking.

@Willie and FITB: I agree, those are subjective calls. Essien, when fit, I would still say is world class. Same for Alonso. Top player in my opinion. De Rossi is borderline. I would say that a fully fit Fletcher is on occasions equal to a fully fit Essien. Sorry, but I don’t think Carrick over the last 2 seasons, is anywhere close to Masceranho (I hate that dirty, toothy cunt, by the way) or Alonso. Actually, on second thoughts, I would put a on-song Park as pretty close to some of the names on that list – defo not top 5, but maybe somewhere between 8-15 top midfielders.

There were reservations about WS being able to adapt to our fast-paced, more bullish game. hello KR. of course i know that barcelona are the best and i have NEVER EVER claimed that we are better than them but sometimes you just gotta understand that we don’t play barcelona everyday and getting the world class midfielder just for the sake of a team that we might not even meet is bordering on obsession and we are not obsessed with barcelona. and then when we get this midfielder in it means a big stumbling block to the devt o the midfielders we’ve already got. i wish we played them every week so we could get used to them but unfortunately we do not and we need to focus on other things that aren’t barcelona.
it seems farcelona has reared its ugly head again. I’ll say this. The issue of world class midfielders is a subjective one. These players are good but so are ours. And so are other teams midfielders. Maybe its apples and oranges but in my opinion it wasn’t so much as the midfield being the problem but the team as a whole.
They know what to do with the ball and act on it quicker than most. They keep the ball very well and aren’t afraid when the lose the ball no matter where on the pitch because they know they have the ability to push forward once they get the ball back. We have good players very very good players and i’m happy with this lot and i’ll say they can beat any one including the spanish giants. Its a bti unfair to single out TC and Ando and say they can’t compete with Barca. Thats the problem right there. Its a team effort. If this squad plays to its potential then those two won’t have all the responsibility of fending of the whole of the opposition,
A couple of weeks ago, i was being smug when i said Ozil looks a class player. And he did. For the first time in a long time him along with his partners in the middle gave the barcelona guys a run for their money. I’ll go as far as saying there was nothing between them. And then Messi shows up. Nothing you can do about that. A forward player most likely gets the goals that can save a match. Ronaldo on the other hand well……….. That’s a story for another day. We play with speed energy and its great to see but as a word of caution so we don’t see our own fans turning on the younger players should things go awry. Possession is key, possession, possession, possession. We have the ingridients, its all there but for the love of God we need to keep the ball better than anything i’ve seen so far. The way we play demands that if there aren’t ultra defensive minded players in the middle busting a gut to break play and keep the ball then the others need to raise their game by keeping a hold of the ball. Going gung ho for 90 mins aint gonna work. There is speed in the squad, lets use it properly

I reckon SAF’s warning to our senior defenders is not really a serious warning but more a confidence boost to the likes of Jones,Smalling, Fabio, Evans etc that they will get regular games and be given every opportunity to prove themselves.
We all know a fit Rio or Vida will get priority over the young un’s in the big games but look at Smalling last year the lad played all the CL games up to the quarter finals i think. He also got around 30 appearance out of 52? Also O’shea had a surge of games in which Rafa was dropped for majority of 2nd half of the season games. SAF’s rotation ability will guarantee game time for all of our 8 defenders.
The advantage of having 8 is that everybody can play in the space of 2 games, plus 2 players for each postion, however in past years we’ve had 10 and struggled for numbers like in 2009-10 (fulham, wolfsburg) and in 2007 (Milan double header) when we was forced to played carrick in centre back, Hargo/fletch at Right back & Giggs and Valencia at right back recently

Slim – I dont rate de Rossi at all. Fletcher does what he does. As for Ozil yes he is a decent enough player but his energy levels are piss poor.
The likes of Yaya Toure, Anelka, Mesut Ozil, Samir Nasri, Ribery, Benzema, Freddy Kanoute, Chamakh, Fellaini and Sami Khedira are muslim footballers so they will not be performing to their potential because some maybe fasting because it is the month of Ramadan.
