STATS: How Do Our Wingers Compare?

This season has been a disappointing one for our wingers with Nani, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young all struggling for fitness and good form. Last season Valencia was voted player of the season by his team mates and the fans, whilst Nani was voted player of the season by his team mates the year before, yet neither have set the world alight this season. Ashley Young, who was in the final year of his contract at Aston Villa, cost United £16m the summer before last, but has yet to justify that price tag.

So how do they compare with wide players at other clubs?

The stats above compare our players with Gareth Bale (Spurs), Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Samir Nasri (City), Hatem Ben Arfa (Newcastle), James Milner (City), Adam Johnson (Sunderland) and Nathan Dyer (Swansea).

Lets just say the only way is up for our wingers. If even just 2 of them improve by 50% next season, we will be challenging for most stuffs.

But that said, one have to remember when our wingers were tearing down the wings, we had Scholes who was spraying 30~40 yard passes out to them for fun. Defenders could not stay as close to our wingers as they do now as they risk the ball being put behind them. And if you think about it, they are able to double team our wingers this season because of a lack of threat from the central midfield. If we can just have just one central midfielder that is a goal threat, opposition midfielders will think twice before leaving their space to defend on the wings.

So I say getting a central midfielder that has goals in him will definitely improve our wing play

  2. Colin says:

I’d still say Nani is our best winger by far.
Yes he is inconsistent but out of our wingers he’s the most likely to score a goal or give an assist.
If he gets a full pre-season I’m sure he’ll be great again next year

Jesus! Young and Valencia have been dreadful this season.

  4. Daniel88 says:

    3 assists from Ashley Young
    2 assists from Nani

… he has ONLY played 11 games more.

What a fucking joke and people STILL defend the useless gutless tosser.

Our wingers simply aren’t flying this season!

  6. Andromeda says:

    We are flying without wings!!

  7. olaitan Jamiu says:

all we want is another winger

  8. Ishorla says:

    Nani is our best winger

We need a quality midfielder perhaps a role for Rooney?? It’s obvious there is something wrong with him he can’t seem to play every week, his short passing game is shit and cost him on Monday, I personally think the game was lost in mid field we allowed them to play their passing game.
Giggs is past it now but to his delight he has no competition for his place…

    Excellent point Marq

    On other note
Milner is one of the highest successful dribblers????

Hazard isn’t too bad either , good starts , Nasri also had good passing rates

But Bales is miles away in terms of Goals and assists , is he worth his 50m price tag ??
