STATS: United Suffer More Injuries Than Any Club

United suffered more significant injuries than any other club and our players were missing for more days through injury than players at any other club.

United suffered more than five times the amount of significant injuries than City had to deal with and our players were missing through injury for almost ten times the amount of days City’s were.

And we lost the title on goal difference.

Awesome. At least we were first somewhere.

Don’t change anything. The medical team is working its socks off. It was all down to bad luck.

  2. Red Devil says:

    Hahahaha

Costas mate…you would literally have them shot wouldn’t you :D

  3. Clint-Iamyourpapii says:

The medical team is piss poor…seriously who has more injuries than us in the whole of England including the championship and league 1.

    Owen Hargreaves was right !

The amount of times players has been rushed back is evidence in recent years, Ruud,Rooney,Rio, Vidic (nerve injury), Rafael and Fabio, Anderson’s dodgy knees…theres so many I can’t keep track.

Yes its bad luck but FFS this is fucking weird ! Someone is not doing their job and im saying its the Doc on the highest wages at United who seems to be gaining weight day by day.

  4. mancdub says:

I think everyone knew this but I’ll save the table anyway to show to a whinging gooner mate of mine.

  5. CedarsDevil says:

Can we please hire that physio at Chelsea?

  6. Costas says:

    @Red Devil

Hi mate. Nah, nothing that drastic. That being said, I wouldn’t mind slipping some cathartic into their coffee. :)

  7. Arni says:

All this shows is how poor our squad depth is and how deep City’s depth is. The more players you have in one position, the more players are going to be on the bench, than playing on the pitch with a chance of getting injured. Everyone’s fresh on squad rotation too.

Our squad depth is shit, so players play more, get injured, and then get rushed back as there’s no one to fill their place and it’s one vicious cycle.

  8. mancdub says:

    Cedars
I would break the transfer record for her.

  9. Costas says:

Around 1/6 of those 1681 days belongs to Owen and Anderson’s lay offs…

  10. mancdub says:

    Arni
I don’t think it shows that at all.

  11. Balaji Sivaraman says:

Arni, That has to be one of the most ignorant, stupid and funny comment I have ever read on a football forum. It just highlights how little football knowledge you actually have. No, I don’t regret saying that because anyone with half a brain will know that your so-called opinion is simply incorrect and dumb.

  12. Costas says:

The fact that we fought for the title until the last minute despite of those injuries actually proves how good the squad depth was. Not in every position mind you, but much better than City’s. Imagine them playing most of the season without Kompany and Toure (the equivalents of Vidic and Fletcher for us).

  13. mancdub says:

Apart from central midfield we’ve got options in all positions.

  14. CedarsDevil says:

I vote we hire Arni as next Med Chief

  15. keegan4england says:

    @mandub

Agreed! United are strong everywhere except Left back and Midfield. Midfield is THE most important part of the pitch and nothing has been done since 2007.

Lets hope Kagawa is the first of 2 quality central midfield signings. Probably Modric? Altho Levy is a C**T to negotiate with and dickhead Modric goes and signs a contract last year. Is there a clause saying he can leave if champions league football wa snot on offer? Then again there are cheaper options on the continent.

  16. lordrt says:

    Let’s put up a poll :)
Eva Carneiro as United’s next physio, thou the lads would all want to stay injured then ;)

  17. Jeet says:

Is she the hottest thing on a football pitch?

Naaah, Giggsy’s chest hair wins hands down ;)

  18. mancdub says:

Last night I was so bored I opened a twitter account to check out football agent ITK and his Pogba exclusive.
Last summer he predicted Nasri to United, Mata and Benzema to Arsenel, Modric to Chelsea and last week he confidently predicted that a deal to bring Hazard to United was imminent.
    Eric Kean WTF

  19. Red Devil says:

    Costas

But on a more serious note, someone should show these stats to fergie and ask them meds what the fuck is going on…this is beyond ridiculous now…and its not as if this is a one-off year, I’m pretty sure we’d be near the bottom almost every year in the last 4-5 years..

    Arni

I seriously hope that you were being sarcastic/taking the piss or something. Coz if not, you need help my friend

I think he was joking…lets see if he comes back and explains his comment

    I ‘d rather shag than hire her..Cedars

Red Devils? More like the Red Cross. :-)

  22. Shebangsthedrums says:

Arni – are you on drugs?

  23. Bobby Charlton's combover says:

So we’re the team worst affected by injuries and the team worst affected by dodgy decisions. That still doesn’t make me feel better about not winning the league.

It does make you wonder if it’s just bad luck or are the physios and trainers doing something wrong.
Are we getting more injuries since di Salo left 4 or 5 seasons ago?

  24. WillieRedNut says:

It’s all Micky Phelan and Martin Ferguson’s fault. Yeah, Gibbo and Evans too! ;)

  25. Costas says:

    @Red Devil

The counter arguement throughout the season has been that the medical team can’t be responsible for the amount of injuries. And that’s fair enough. We should look at how well prepared the team is to examine that problem (It definitely doesn’t help that our curcus tours 1-2 continents each summer instead of undergoing intense training each day).

On the other hand, the amount of time it takes for the players to return to recover and return to fitness does fall in the hands of the meds. And as Scott’s article proves here, we definitely have a problem in that department.

  26. YS says:

Well , we need to change our training methods
Any one seen the City players.(Assuming they are not on some super med/steroid which cannot be detected in regular drug tests ) City players , all of them look bulky.huge/fit/toned up.

Reason ?? : remember when Mancini first came to city how everyone ( mostly Scarface Golfer 6 month vacationer ) complained about too much training , double training sessions etc etc

I guess those training sessions have paid

Should we look at our training system/medical team ???

or is it just that we tend to play youngster who try to give more than their 100% n get injured ( Silva twins an example ?? )

  27. wiuru says:

There is no smoke without fire . Im sure the club will be looking into this .

  28. RedScot says:

In fairness to accuracy, this article on injuries was first widely published by the ‘ Lady Arse ‘ Arsenal forum on I think the 9th of May , courtesy of the ‘ Premier League Injury league, blog who compiled the stats .Replagerised two days ago by the Sporting Intelligence , ‘non forum ‘.
The point still stands Man City had zero players injured for 14 weeks of the season .
Manchester United had never had less than four players out at any time through the whole season .
I’m not sure who to call a cheeky shit , as Tom Addison so eloquently described Ji Sung on todays finance’s forum on Rom, for plagerising a comment made no doubt by Ed Barker on twitter , about sofa’s and loose change .I would’nt mind raking through Ed’s sofa be right up to Inverness to DFS, or its competitor JLS.
Your all cheeky shits , as far as I am concerned , have a great summer lads , lassies. Be good, some-one is always watching to keep you in check.
    Cheeky shits. pmsl. (Joking )

  29. wayne says:

Sorry lads can’t buy into Utd having a crap medical staff, shit happens I read up about Hargo’s procedure and a top boy in that field said Utd followed correct procedure
    Just a freak year

    Now Trophy please!

  32. RedPharoe says:

I could comment on Arni’s ridiculous comment, but I won’t.

Loosing on goal difference with these injuiries does help the justification for loosing the title to shitty, but no matter what stats say, we lost it all on our own. We had the lead and flushed it.

On the positive though, this just goes to show we have a strong capable team that needs strenghtening in midfield and the left back, and we should be good to go for next season.

Roll on the scums!! 20 is on the horizon…

  33. Busby_Fergie says:

All injuries apart, Vidic’s injury cost us the most. We wouldn’t had lost to BB and nor had drawn with Everton at home..he’ll be back so let’s see who beats us at our HOME!

  34. Red Devil says:

    Willie

Cracked me up there mate :D

I just hope people dont start to use these injuries as an excuse for losing to city..
I mean its very easy to say “look we had tons of injuries but still just lost out on goal difference”

Bottom line is injuries didn’t cause us to be outplayed by Bilbao twice (or even Ajax to some extent)
Injuries didnt cause us to go down to Wigan and lose a 2-0 lad to everton.

There are deficiencies in our team and we shouldn’t let these stats hide them.

  35. Busby_Fergie says:

  36. WillieRedNut says:

Red Devil -How you doing man? :) The injuries are frustrating mate. Just for once for next season, I’d love a fully fit squad……….our luck must change, surely? ;)

  37. wayne says:

Red Devil of course injuries would be one of the reasons Utd would get outplayed in some games. Not taking into account the first choice might not be playing it also means some players playing out of position, also extra workload which leads to burn out for those who are fit

  38. NotoriousRedDevil says:

Yet we still have the medical team in the business today!!!!

If they were GP’s they’d be struck off with the ridiculous amount of aborted comebacks over the last 4 years.

    Coming Soon – in 2012/13 – United Injury Crisis….V!

  39. FletchTHEMAN says:

There are lies, damn lies, and then there are statistics.

We all know the basic truth of this, but how it is affecting us is harder to see. The primary reason we lost is that we have sustained long term injuries to critical elements of the back 4. With our first choice center backs being injured for long spells and problems with full backs as well. Valencia as well. Anyway, we are all frustrated with the injuries and one has to look at the fitness program for some of it. But fitness coaches wouldn’t have stopped the injuries to Nani, Valencia, or Vidic.

  40. James7t7 says:

What does that say about our training facilities and medical staff?

  41. bbabyj says:

    Sack the medical team ASAFP.

  42. Devil310 says:

Keep saying it year over year….our medical team must be shit. One year is one thing, every year being the worst or one of the worst must be a cause of concern.

  43. FletchTHEMAN says:

Is de Gea playing in the summer tournaments ? I thought he was to undergo an eye operation to sort out his vision issue? N

  44. LoneStarRed says:

It was Mancini’s awesome skills as manager that got City the title. NOT.

I think that the ramp up in the style of play was a significant contributor to that injury list. I expect that we will have much less this season.

  45. keane16 2wice better than gerard8 says:

at least if kompany was injured couldnt have scored the winner agnst us.
well about our suad depth, we only need a good (and i mean good) RB nd with samurai already in the bag, him, carrick AND JONES(CDM) would make our mid solid, deadly and fluid just like the old days

  46. Busby babes says:

think it says it all to be honest city looked vulrenable without kompany at the back, and in terms of leadership he’s equilvant to city has vida to us, we done well considering and even with so many injuries hampering our title push we took them to the wire, fuck the negatives theres was plenty of postives to draw on.

  47. Sam says:

I’m surprised that no-one has mentioned what I consider to be the 2 main drivers of our injury problems:

    1) We have a lot of young players. Players such as Fabio, Rafael, Smalling, Cleverley, Jones, Welbeck and De Gea. These players are all in their teens and early twenties, and whilst they will form the base of our squad for the next decade, we have to accept that given their age they will be susceptible to injuries. Conversely, it’s no coincidence that City had so few injuries when you consider that the average age of their squad is in the 26-28 range, when a player is at peak physical fitness and less likely to suffer injuries.

    2) We have a lot of injury prone players. I’m sorry but it’s true. To name but a few, we have Ferdinand (back), Vidic (calf), the twins (everything), Cleverley (feet), Anderson (knee), Owen (everything), Evans (calf) and Nani (seems to pick up a lot of niggly injuries).

And then of course to top it off we have been unlucky with several long term injuries such as Vidic and Valencia. In reality you should always expect at least one serious injury per season, I suppose you could argue that City have been lucky in this respect that they didn’t have any serious injuries.

  48. Gopher Brown says:

Has anyone considered that the reason our player may get injured so often may be due to ‘commitment to the cause,’ rather than our ‘shit medical team?’ Anyway, I digress.

A medical team can only treat players when they are injured. It can do nothing to prevent fit players suffering injuries.

I’m sure these stats have been skewed by three players in particular – Michael Owen, who was injury prone when he joined and in his three years played about as much as we expected; Fletch, who has missed the majority of the season with a bowel condition which could not be prevented (although, he wouldn’t miss many days if he worked in the club shop as opposed to being a professional athlete); and Vida whose injury is a serious one but one which occurs fairly frequently in football and other high-impact sports and cannot be attributed to the medical team or any lack of warming up.

  49. Red Devil says:

    Willie

Stayin Alive man…by Gods grace…..! Thanks for asking mate…hope you’re good too.
We’re definitely due some change of luck..but i guess the worrying part is this is more than bad luck. In the last 5 years, i’m sure we’d be in the botton 3 or 5 of that list every year. Of course we’ve had owen hargreaves and Michael owen on our books, but still.
Could it be that we are playing too many youngsters too soon before they are fully developed? like the twins or the recurrent injuries of anderson, etc or maybe rushing players back before they are fully fit to go? Maybe its not all down to the medical team but something to do with training methods or summat?

    wayne

we almost had a fully fit squad playing in those games against Bilbao, including rooney et al. except maybe Vidic. Now i find it hard to believe that only Vidic being there would have helped us outplay Bilbao. Our weaknesses are there for all to see…the point being lets not take the asy way out and simplistically say that we lost the league because of injuries..

  50. Hate2Wake says:

We need to improve our Fitness Department…. last 3 seasons were ruined by injuries

  51. Mithun Kalaga says:

Hope we have a better share of luck next time!!!
