Michael Owen scored 8 in pl in the same season, playing for a far inferior team. So obviously, by letting Tevez go and gettin Owen on a free, we have improved our team? I haven’t heard any city fans say “oh my God we’ve got Tevez – what an unbelievable player”. He’ll improve the overall standard of the squad but nobody is awetruck. However Tevez is only 25, Owen is almost 30 and has had lots of major injuries.
It smacks of when City signed a 28 year old injury prone Robbie Fowler. He had the odd purple patch of scoring goals over the next 2/3 seasons (mostly against Utd) but he never rediscovered his old self and I don’t think we’ll ever see the best of Owen again. People forget that it’s 11 years ago since he broke through as a 17 year old for England – that’s a lot of years of football, getting kicked, injured & operated on. How many players rediscover their old self at 29/30?

Ireland, Johnson, Richards, Onuoha, Evans, Weiss etc etc have all come through our Academy. And in case you didn’t know Ireland was our best player last season by a mile, and Onuoha was superb also. In Johnson we potentially have one of the best up and coming midfielders in the country should he stear clear of injury. So yeah despite the millions the youth is still getting a chance and shining through matey.

Sturridge didn’t see eye to eye with the Taffy Mafia at City andwe refused to offer him more than they thought he should be on as a teenager. He could be an awesome player – he has been touted for about 5 years now as been the best player to ever have come through the England Academy setup – he was training with the first team when he was 15. 4 years and several injuries on he had about a dozen appearances and scored 4 goals – maybe he’ll always be a “could have been”. He was getting much of a look in at City but at Chelsea Its’ hard to imagine him gettin in th team ahead of Anelka, Drogba etc. unless they have injuries.

Let’s state a few things that we all agree with… Tevez is a very good player (read some independent views in the media) and fans both blue and red would slate a player crossing the City (whether they wanted him to stay or not). History is subjective. Before Abromovic, City out-trophied Chelsea massively; United spent the equivalent of City trying to win the league in the 70s and 80s; Everton would be an established top 4 side but for Hysel preventing them going into Europe when English teams dominated. United won the league at exactly the ‘right’ time- Liverpool’s demise, post-Hysel ban; an unheard array of talented youngsters; and the Sky-laden riches.
As for some other comments: City renting their ground- remember United using Maine Road after the war? Advertising cheap tickets on Key 103- you can’t seriously be knocking a club for selling 80% reduced tickets to local people?
Let us hope that in a few years we’re talking about both teams being in the hunt for all trophies.
