Two of the biggest clubs in the world, Manchester United and Barcelona, have played some thrilling matches against each other. Let’s look at some of the best matches between these two top clubs.
1- Cup Winners Cup 1984
This second-leg match was particularly difficult for Manchester United. They were already trailing 2-0 after a defeat at Camp Nou in the first leg. Additionally, the Barcelona team had the legendary Diego Maradona to keep their spirits sky high. However, the Red Devils had a surprise in store that day for Barcelona.
Just like the United players, the Old Trafford crowd also remained optimistic about their chances. About 58,000 fans turned up to support their team in order to repeat the amount of support the club received in the first leg.
In the first half of the match, Ray Wilkins provided a brilliant corner that found Bryan Robson who scored to take the lead. United could not add any more goals in the first half as Barcelona put up a very good fight.
In the second half though, the Catalans were destroyed in a matter of two minutes by the Red Devils. Ray Wilkins was presented with a chance when a melee ensued near the box. His initial shot could not find the desired target, but Bryan Robson took advantage of the rebounded ball to extend United’s lead.
Two minutes later, one more goal came for United, ultimately sealing the fate of the match. A left side cross was met with an inaccurate shot from a United player which fell towards Frank Stapleton who just needed the easiest of nudges to score. Because of this, United proceeded further in the competition with an aggregate win of 3-2.
As you know, the all-important World Cup is nearing and many of Manchester United players are playing for the England team. Manchester United went into their match as underdogs, just the same as the England team are – yet they came out victorious. There’s hope for England yet, even against the sheer force of Spain. Why not take a chance and bet on England? The England team boasts players such as Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Jamie Vardy, Raheem Sterling, Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard. With such players, it can safely be said that they will be a decent contender for the upcoming World Cup.

2- Cup Winners Cup Final 1991
This was the third time Manchester United and Barcelona were meeting head to head. Seven years ago, the Red Devils had ousted the Catalan side from the European’s Cup Winners Cup competition. It is time for revenge?
For this match, Barcelona was without several of its key players. The goalkeeper, Andoni Zubizaretta, was absent and so was the striker Hristo Stoichkov, and midfielder Guillermo Amor.
Neither teams scored a goal until the 66th minute of the game. Similar to the 1984 match, Bryan Robson proved very instrumental for Manchester United. His free-kick was headed towards the goal by Steve Bruce, which found the back of the net with a little help from Mark Hughes.
Bryan Robson was not done with Barcelona yet. His brilliant through ball for Mark Hughes created the perfect opportunity and with only the Barcelona goalie standing between him and the goal, Hughes scored a second. However, Barcelona managed to get a consolation goal near the end when Ronald Koeman scored a goal from a 30-yard free kick.
United emerged victorious that day with a decent 2-1 score line. They also became the first English club to win a European trophy after the ban was lifted on English clubs after the notorious Heysel disaster of 1985.
3- Champions League 1994
Just a year before the 1994 Champions League, Barcelona suffered a humiliating defeat in the all-important Champions League final at the hands of Milan. The Catalans had been thrashed a humiliating 4-0. Therefore, Barcelona was well prepared and ready for action when facing Manchester United in the group stages of the following year’s tournament.
The first leg was played at Old Trafford. Barcelona scored two goals but United managed to equalize with the game ending at 2-2. Romario and Bakero both scored goals, but these were eventually canceled out by the goals from Hughes and Sharpe from Manchester United.
However, in the second leg, United were beaten 4-0 in front of Barcelona’s home crowd, which was in excess of a hundred thousand people in numbers. United was without its number one goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel, and its defense was not strong enough to withstand the powerful attacking duo of Romario and Stoichkov.
4- Champions League semi-final 2008
In the Champions League of 2008, it was the brilliance of Manchester United that saw the team come out of Camp Nou without conceding any goal. This gave United a huge advantage for the second leg at Old Trafford. If United managed to win, the team would earn its place in the final of the Champions League, a feat not achieved since 1999.
In the fourteenth minute of the game, Paul Scholes found an opportunity. It was spectacular to see Paul Scholes firing the ball from 25 yards comfortably into the net.
The score stayed the same until the end of the game. However, United got several golden chances which they could not take advantage of to extend its lead. Barcelona also had many goal scoring opportunities but never managed to hit the target. United proceeded to the final and went on to win the Champions League final against Chelsea in a thrilling contest.
