The Goal That Should Have Won Us A European Cup

“In 2004, Manchester United went out to a young Porto that nobody would have even bet a euro on winning and that’s football,” said Mourinho, ahead of today’s match against Inter Milan.

Oh yes, I remember, when a linesman failed to see the three players playing Paul Scholes on side and disallowed a goal that should have gifted us to the easiest route to Champions League glory.

And a dodgy save by the keeper palming the ball in to the path of a Porto player to score. What a gift.

United were bad in the first leg but should have gone throuh in the second leg. However if you remember what we were going through at the time,United had zero chance of winning that European Cup.Of course,Porto’s next opponents were easy pickings but at the time United were in the most shocking form they have been for the past 6 years.Rio was out,Brown was still reeling from his comeback from injury,Silvestre was injured and the team was leaking goals for fun.Personally,i believe the United team that should have won the Ch.League was the one of the 02-03 where the final was at Old Trafford.Becks,Keane,Scholes,Giggs has reached their peak maturity wise and Veron and Ruud were settling in.Rio and Wes were still a little green and that cost us in Madrid.

big ron…those were the days…I hope fuckin beglin or pleat aren’t doing it tonight…although I don’t think there’s another option is there…fuckin hate ITV with Townsend and co. as well

  5. King Eric says:

Unfortunately Jake it will be either cluless Pleat or biased Beglin. Don’t mind Tyldsley or Drury to be honest.

Anyway shocking decision but what can we do.

  6. UnitedFan says:

pathetic decisions for both free kick and offside

  7. Stephen says:

Why Jim Beglin?? They might as well have picked John Gidman, very odd decision, but I suppose Hanson and Lauro were too busy on the BBC, Souness and Rednapp were on Sky, Alan Green on five live, Collymore and Mick Quinn on Talkshite oh and Colin Murray on channel five.

I agree with Costas, we were in a state of competance back then. It was frustrating in the fact that we knew that team was good enough to win back the European Cup, but we just couldnt get things right, and I for one did not fancy us to win it back then.
I wouldnt bother going on about that disallowed goal either, its just one of them things. What we gain on the swings, as the saying goes. You need alot of luck to get through to the final and win it, luck regarding goals going in for us, for the opposition missing, and obviously luck with the timing of injuries and suspensions.
Even last year, we had a late Tevez goal at Lyon which completely changed the tie, or in the final we all know that could of gone either way. Im not saying we didnt deserve to win it last year at all, my point is just that any team needs a bit of luck along the way to win this competition.
In 2004 we clearly didnt get it, but we got a bit in injury time in 1999 in Barcelona, and again in 2008 with Terry slipping. Whats meant to be will be, no point dwelling on bad decisions from the past. Lets look forward with confidence instead – we’ll win tonight, Ronaldo Rooney and Berbatov will click. FORZA UNITED!!

did you notice in the summer porto were being investigated for match fixing in the 2004 european cup campaign. They were originally banned from europe but then let back in due to lack of evidence. At the time i couldn’t help but wonder if that linesman had been slipped some money.

Moaninho always evokes alot of strong emotion among utd fans and the bringing up of this incident is inevitable now that we’re playing his team.

however i tink maybe we should let it go, its been 5 years now and within that time we’ve won it again. With this current team, we’ve got a hell of a chance bringing home ole big ears even more times. So lets look to the rosy future rather than be bitter abt the past

Awful decision, I remember it well. Scholes isn’t even offside when he touches the ball. It was midway through the first half as well – who knows what the score would have been! Don’t know if we would have gone onto the win the tournament but Mourinho and Porto should have been out!

  13. paddy says:

just think,if that scholes goal would have stood people would be saying “jose who”

  14. Wastoid says:

Enjoy those highlights, Jose. Neither you nor Porto will ever win the CL again.
