Chelsea and Liverpool can’t get on that list because of their small grounds.

Hi GHTT. I have written a post for you at the topic with Scott’s analysis.

  9. Costas says:

Oh, and City can’t get on that list because they are a small club. Ouch.

  10. spacemanspiff says:

Interestingly there are 6 German clubs in the top 15. Goes to say something about the club support in Germany.

  11. javac says:

    Good stats, again!

@AlphaRS. Great atmosphere last night tho’ vs Valencia.

Sadly, Madrid will beat us in this one this year with the big signings. We’ll just have to settle for the champs league trophy. Shame that. Bit gutted really.

  12. Paul the red says:

the german league is the best supported as it’s cheap to get into…. not a glazer plc £35 per ticket job, also i visited ajax last year for a league game and got superb seats which had a superb view and that cost me 19 euro for a ticket.

half the reason Old Trafford is quiet is because of the people who can afford it and if you look at the car park beind the ground it’s all jag’s, astons, range rovers.. the lot… although up the stretford end it’s rarely quiet.

  13. theCount says:

    @spacemanspiff
that´s because it costs more to subscribe to the bundesliga on telly than to buy a season ticket…
    ;-)

  14. Dilardo says:

I was there last night, good to see a huge crowd but the atmosphere wasn’t great, mainly due to tourists and kids being in. I was in a queue at the ticket office to collect my tickets (as the club again failed to post tickets out that they had a good month to action) and a club official shouted to the queues that all tickets had been sold out after which half the people disappeared – obviously a number of supporters didn’t bother turning up after buying tickets.

Wembley on Sunday should be a different matter regarding atmosphere – no matter what people say about our home support, our away following is second to none.

It will be interesting to see how The Toon Army back their side this coming season. Will they hit an average of 20K? I have my doubts.

  15. Paul the red says:

i wonder if the chelsea rent boys will throw all that fake money at us again from their open top battle buses.

  16. MUFC the Religion says:

Our proper supporters (not little kids that got Ronaldo shirts) are the best in the world.

  17. kel says:

Consider this fact is only in Europe. Man United had more fan base than any other clubs in Asian and middle East. It proves to show we are biggest club in the world. I thought Barcelona stadium is far more bigger than us? Why their higher average attendance is so low? We had almost fulled housed OT for almost all the match! Well done!

  18. cantona7 says:

@MUFC the Religion – (not little kids that got Ronaldo shirts plus those who label O’Shea our worst player ever)

  19. Figoman says:

How many people think Delaet will be a huge future for Man Utd? Methinks he was great last night. Love u all straight from Lagos. Jo ooo, (abeg ooo)…

  20. Dilardo says:

MUFC the Religion Said,August 6th, 2009 @17:54 Our proper supporters (not little kids that got Ronaldo shirts) are the best in the world.

Completely agree. There was over 74 000 there according to the announcer over the PA system last night. That shows great support in numbers, shame that the vocal backing can sometime be missing.

Yes the team can and should get the crowd going, but if they don’t then it’s our responsibility to get them going. What fun is there in going to a game and just sitting there? Losing your voice from your support is what it’s about. Creating an atmosphere that intimidates the opposition, inspires our team and is a enjoyable experience for us is what we should be looking for. Away, fantastic – home, work needs to be done.

An idea would be to sell tickets to areas of the ground with no seat numbers, so that you can go in with your mates or know where the better areas are and make your way there. Nothing worse than sitting next to a family and having to be conscious of what you are singing / saying because they’ve got kids with them. Don’t get me wrong, no problem with families, they have the Family areas, and kids need to be brought to United so that they can see what it’s about – but allowing us to sit where we want would help.

Better still, bring back standing. But that’s a can of worms in itself …

  21. Paul the red says:

standing……. another thing with the german league, they allow standing in small sections to make sure it’s safe.

would never be allowed over here though..

  22. kel says:

I thought the 2nd half was quite noisy and good support from the fans? i can hear big roar and support from my television that i got so shock and lower down the volume. However, the first half is so quiet as the team play is not that good. By the way, 2nd half Valencia manager send out 10 players and in the end had some problem with it and it got me laughing. Anyway we can look forward to this Sunday. Come on!

  23. theboogeyman says:

Nothing’s wrong with little kids with Ronaldo shirts.

  24. Dilardo says:

I hate to criticise United or our supporters but last night was the quietest game I’ve been to at O.T. Only ‘United! United!’ and ‘Stand Up For The Champions’ got an airing, and those on very few occasions. We’ve got the most expansive song book of any club and yet that is all that could be mustered. As I have mentioned further up the thread, I believe it is as a result of kids and tourists being in last night.

  25. javac says:

@Dilardo – Maybe I’m getting old, but segregating families into a section isn’t something I agree with. What you’re saying, and I hope I’m wrong and apologies if I am, is that it’s okay to show no class and be abusive to the opposition as long as we don’t like them? Personally, my idea of supporting the team isn’t shouting abuse, but singing, and cheering the team on. More “attack, attack, attack” than “Stevie G is a w##ker” etc etc. No matter how true or funny the quotes may be… Look to King Eric for his quote on “the hooligan”. At United we have class. (I hope!)

Having kids around doesn’t stop the cheering. The kids I know can sing their hearts out with the best of them. GHTT knows a kid too who would agree! Sadly, it’s the modern united culture to not sing, not the family atmosphere. As for the upper class in BMW’s? It’s not just them. It’s endemic at OT.People just need to scream a little.

  26. Dilardo says:

    @javac

Kids are the future supporters and should be at O.T. I’ve seen GHTT’s daughter who is amazing, knows more words to United songs than a lot of so called ‘supporters’.

We have a lot of songs that have swear words and the like in them – I take your point and can see what you’re getting at, but sometimes at home we can barely muster an ‘Attack, Attack, Attack’ or ‘United Road’ let alone any with any profanities in them. :D

Football used to be a working-class game, where people would go and forget about everything else that is going on, support their team, rib the opposition and have a great sing song. I am completely against the hooligan idea and would say that shouting abuse at Stevie GBH isn’t being a hooligan as much as punching someone in the face three times for not giving you something that isn’t yours in the first place is. :D

  27. Drew Vader says:

Love the atmosphere at the German matches. Its a shame the football doesn’t live up to it…

  28. RedJack says:

Not that this will be popular or noticed but in percentage terms Bayern Munich (99.60%), FC Schalke (99.49%) and Arsenal (99.47%) beat us (98.81%) so if they had comparitve size stadiums there average would be higher.

Unless there is other things that need to be taken off you can’t compare things that don’t share similar base.

Bit geeky I admit but interesting and doesn’t look quite as good

  29. javac says:

Dilard0 – Yup. Stevie GBH has no class. And a BMW. lol. This season though, I think the 1-0′s will be 3-0′s which will completely change the crowd. Nothing like an “Attack, Attack, Attack” when your 3-0 up or 5-3 (Spurs etc etc). The tight 1-0′s won’t have helped much.

  30. bestie07 says:

Last nights attendance was phenomenal yet in general disgraceful. The vast majority of our supporters do not deserve to be associated with United

  31. Dilardo says:

    @javac

Lol. I agree in that we should have less 1-0′s and more 2′s, 3′s and 4′s. That Spurs game was amazing. Between that and Villa, two turning points where you really thought ‘yeah, we can win this thing’.

It’s more important for us to get behind the team at 0-0, 1-0 up or when we’re down, but too many people sit there with worried looks on their faces. The away support is just something else – there could not be two more extremes.

  32. Scott the Red says:

I think the people slagging off the atmosphere and the fans at Old Trafford last night need to get a grip.

Those pre-season friendlies are a bit of a laugh and are good days out for the family. You think you’re going to be getting gangs of lads going to get the chants going? Whilst for a lot of people going to the ground and singing is one of the best bits of it, there will be loads of people who hardly ever get to go and just being inside the ground is exciting enough. Watching our players out there and just enjoying being there. They take their horns and they mexican wave and if you’re so arsed about that, you really do need to get a life. Who gives a shit? It’s a pre-season friendly!

This fan snobbery really fucks me off.

  33. javac says:

Dilardo – most of my mates are dippers. Half time, can you imagine the stick I got? I think they were winning 2-1 at the time so I was begging for them to draw, worst case. They all shut up fast when the United goals flew in. Ronaldo’s header sent my pulse racing I can tell ya. I must admit that i might have been an obnoxious fan that day. Wish I was at that game with my brother. If that doesn’t get the crowd going we should check to see if they’re still alive, mate!

  34. Dilardo says:

    @javac

The only reason I get obnoxious is in repsonse to how supporters of other clubs are to me. If they are gentlemanly, I mirror that. If they are giving it both barrels then that is what they get in return, 10-fold. Maybe not very adult, but nobody’s perfect, especially not me.

That Spurs game is what United are all about. Look down and out yet come storming back. I have a lot of dipper mates too and the penalty got the lot of them fuming. ‘Cuz it’s not like they’ve never got a pen that might’ve been just a little shifty …

  35. aig alex is god says:

man shitty wil have the best atmosphere in the next decade wen they build their new 90000 capacity stadium.they are a big club wid a big mentality as robinho said.

  36. javac says:

Citeh couldn’t win a pre-season game never-mind a league. And as for building a stadium they should take a leaf outta the dippers book and aim for building a decent title-shot first before the stadium. Dipperland btw is coming soon. Anytime now. just watch. anytime now. 19 years from now. They might have won the league by then.

  37. Cavalry says:

    I’m surprised RM isn’t #1

  38. kiko_mac says:

Its not just the same as it used to be! There is a number of factors why old trafford is so quiet. Steward Policing, ticket prices hikes and believe it or not success.

We attract many fans globally, some as hardcore as you and me that would give an arm and leg to be at old trafford every week to sing their hearts out and then there are some that where chelsea supporters a few years ago, but we attract all types of followers, though saying that some really make my blood boil.

During the liverpool game at old trafford, all i heard from those scouse bastards was their usual shit, which i will not repeat on a united site but the majority of you’s know what i mean but in return i tried to get a build a bonfire chant but to my surprises OUR own supporters around me told me to keep quiet because they are trying to watch the match, even though the rat munchers where disrespecting our club, they reported me to stewards because my reaction to them saying that was not pretty.

Them type of fans come to old trafford expecting to see harlem globe trotter type of football and when they dont see it they are quietly waiting in expectation and moan and disrespect the players and manager when they are not seeing what they expected to see.

I agree with the poster that said that their idea of supporting the team isn’t shouting abuse, but singing, and cheering the team on but also in a way i got to disagree too, because if it wasnt for the factions and firms in football shouting abuse at the opposing teams firm, there wouldnt be any singing during a football match, as the firms were basically the clubs soldiers and the songs are basically tribal chants such as red flag to show that regardless of anything in the past we will never die, we will fight to make sure the flag is flying high and then as the firms faded away them songs became more family orientated for example songs about players. But got to say when the old chants like red flag, banks of the river irwell, pride of all europe etc… is sang, it still sends the shiver up my back and i can feel the blood pumping through my veins.

But even still with that irrelevant information, regardless of song, i just wish that the fans will get behind the team more because the louder Old Trafford is, the more the players will play for the badge and not their pay cheques. When the players hear the noise and see the atmostphere, the passion we are generating, they know that they have to perform and it will also show the glazers that the club is not theirs, the club is OURS. LUHG!!

  39. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

To all that said kind words about Emily thank you. But the atmosphere last night was fantastic always is when I’m there. Except once less said the better.

  40. NiteRunner79 says:

Great stats considering it costs a fuck load more to attend games here than most other European leagues. I read some where it only costs a tenner to watch Italian league games!

  41. Corea says:

“Unfortunately I bet we’re also one of the quietest too….”

you are sooo very pessimistic. i think it’s harsh. i haven’t been to any of these arenas but i think none of the top 10 is louder.
you take every chance to critisize the club and sometimes you don’t see the borders.

  42. Corea says:

    except Celtic..

  43. Dilardo says:

I remember reading a few years back that some season tickets for AC Milan were as cheap as £250.

    @kiko_mac

Agree with your post mate. Especially the part about the noise and passion getting through to the players. Imagine playing in a ground where there’s the odd bit of noise and singing / chanting but lots of people there, or playing in a cauldron of colour, noise and chanting. I think we would all agree which one we would prefer to play in. Turkish fans, and some from South America show what passion for your team can create. Maybe we have too many ‘stiff-upper lipped’ English gentlemen that don’t really want to get involved.

  44. m1ke says:

@kiko_mac: best comment ive read in days on here!
    totally agree!

  45. kiko_mac says:

    @corea

AlphaRS is right though, we are unfortunately one of the quietest… at home.

There is a couple on that list that are quieter though but as Scott stated in the post, the germans take their football passionately and though with a limited song base, they make alot of noise!

But got to agree Celtic have a very loud fanbase! Been to Celtic Park a few times myself as my father is a Celtic fan and the atmostphere there comparing to anywhere else ive been, well there is no comparison, them guys are crazy as well as the Rangers fans.

But the difference there is, them teams dont attract fans because of their football. They do through religion and through war! The passion is so intense its actually hatred and that there was frequently murders of rival fans, just because a person was wearing a rivals top!

The chants they sing arent about players but about war!

For example GHTT or any other irishman on this site might agree that growing up in ireland/n.i , depending on your political belief, you would follow Celtic or Rangers even though your first love is Manchester United! Would happen more in Northern Ireland though!

if it wasnt that way id be a brit hating liverpool fan with a celtic tattoo
    but im not

  51. kiko_mac says:

    @Dilardo

I dont think its just to do with stiff lipped english gentlemen. There are loads of factors.

The majority of our noise is stretford end but we are all scattered instead of all being in one place. I think the days of the K stand barmy army are long gone!

I think too the media perception of english fans as all hooligans affects it too, with alot of foreigners they might not want to sing because they might think they are supporting hooliganism.

Its not just Manchester United thats having the problems, most league clubs are.

Its not a working mans game anymore, its a billionaire playground. Some fans might love it because its reality championship manager or man city loving it because they are some pimps bitch but the reality is they have no love for the game.

  57. BrisbaneRed says:

Off topic comment, but I’m sure David Gill will be aware of what I’m going to say.
The transfer money SAF has spent so far is the money he gets every summer – either £20m or £25m. He’s still got the money from the Ronaldo sale. That sale was made this current financial year – 1st July 09 to 30th June 2010.
Now if none of that £80m is spent, then UTD’s profit for this current financial year will be £80m more than it would otherwise be. So UTD would face a huge tax bill next financial year – in fact a huge chunk of that £80m could go in tax UNLESS ITS SPENT.
Now Fergie has 2 opportunities to spend some of that money. Either before the end of August ie. in the next 3 weeks, or else in January 2010. Now we all know that class players are hard to sign in January, so if Gill isn’t faced with a hugely increased tax bill then a large portion of that £80m needs to be spent before the end of August.
To me it makes sense to make a signing – the problem is a selling club will be asking well over the odds. So the problem facing Gill is this: a) pay a lot of that £80m in tax or b) pay over the odds for a player, and be accused of inflaming the transfer fee spiral. Option (b) may be the cheapest option.
Under no circumstances should any of that money be used to pay down the Glazers’ debt.
The debt is the Glazers’ problem, not UTD’s.

  58. Shak says:

I don’t get to OT as much as I would like but I wish the support was like the away games inleague or Europe. Fulham in the fa cupwas fucking brilliant. The stand was shaking!! 62. Ishaq says:

If you want atmosphere go and watch Roma and become an Ultra.

The guys want to watch the game and have a nice relaxing time with their kids.

I think we need to expand to 90000, then we will get the average upto about 80000. I think there should be a section in the ground that pays half price. Cricket has the grass embankment which offers real cheap tickets. We should think of something similar

  63. Ishaq says:

Brisbane Red, the Glazers have made the debt our problem. I think they should sell of their assets based in America and pay off the debt. Then they can start making real profits. Ofcourse, thats never going to happen. Interest is the worst thing to ever come to mankind. Its a killer. We cant afford to pay off the initial capital of the loan because we are paying Millions in interest.

We need to find ways to slowly pay off the initial loan. As a Man Utd fan, Im willing to sacrifice a few empty transfer windows in order to try and pay off a small chunk of the loan. It just eats away at my brain, as if I owed that money.

We are even subscribing to satellite channels only to be able to follow United’s matches, our local station cannot afford to buy the rights often, except if United are playing lower oppositions or have reached a final, or a big match in the Champions League. Look at the link:

    http://hotlist.uk.msn.com/sport/football-fans-on-the-bawl.aspx

In the past Roy Keane has criticised the prawn sandwich brigade and even SAF said the Stretford End has quietened down.

In the end – for whatever reason – Old Trafford doesn’t make much noise. The study shows this.

In terms of capacity percentage – FC Schalke – 61,361 (61,673) and Arsenal – 60,040 (60, 355) do really well. Their numbers are closer than our 900 odd empty seats

If they had bigger grounds I’m sure their numbers would be higher.

Vidic out for the start of the season.thats a big blow.hes been out for so long.may struggle wen he gets back.

looks like Sir Alex is taking the game seriously.hope we do well

I once got told by a steward at OT that someone had complained about my constant chanting.

That’s how it is there nowadays unfortunately.

    good morning.

thats unfortunate.why do such foolish peace loving cunts come to OT to watch the match

tell them to go to wastelands.they can sleep in peace.

we are the most popular and sucessful side,we have to create an atmosphere to match that.

  79. King Eric says:

gotta hate , aig alex etc – Morning. Bad news about Vida but I am more than happy with Jonny Evans. He is a superb central defender so I don’t think it will really be a problem. Added to that we also have De Laet now.

Just off topic but why is everyone saying the rentboys have a great strong squad. They have only added Zhirkov, that prima donna cunt Sturridge and Ross fuckin Turnbull to their already ageing squad. How do we know Ancellotti will succeed? If I had to put money on it I think he may struggle at first.

  80. King Eric says:

    Morning Micky.

  81. Tony Starks says:

    mornign all Reds..

AIG – How old is this list? some of these stadiums don’t exist anymore, what is a 5 star stadium anyway?

  82. Muggaz says:

    hi everyone…

I am interested to see this Zhirkov chap in action… in Fantasty Football he costs £7.5mil, and the killer is £8mil, so someone must rate him! Is he a winger or what?

I fucking hate those rent boys so much though…

  83. gotta hate tiny tears says:

Both the Emirates in Londom and Wembley are five star stadiums, whilst the new Stanley Park stadium in Liverpool will also be five star if the fucking pipe dream comes true, and to be a 5 star stadium it must be all-seated and have a minimum capacity of 30,000
The playing surface dimensions must be 105 metres in length and 68 metres in width
The playing surface must either be natural turf or FIFA-licensed artificial turf
The substitute benches must seat at least 13 people
The dressing rooms must seat at least 25 people
There should also be a separate ‘Delegate’s Room’, ‘Doping Station’ and ‘First Aid Room’
Stadiums must have CCTV both inside and outside and a ‘Security Control Room’
Must provide seating for at least 1500 VIPs and 200 journalists
The floodlights must light the pitch to an illuminance of at least 1400 lux
There must be at least three TV studios within the Stadium.

  84. aig alex is god says:

    king eric

    good morning

evans is great.i have no doubt in that.but vidic has more experience and forms a rock soli partnership wid rio and plus rio is injury prone too.dunno whether his back problem is solved or not.otherwise the scenario will be like the villa home game last year.brown is struggling too so that is nt good news.while da laet and the da silva brothers are great i want to start the season wid a good full strength side consisting of experienced players.squad strength will come into play later in the season

as for the rentboys,i think they may just be the favourites this season bcoz they have not lost any player and zhirkov looks a decent player.plus malouda, drogba, anelka and ivanovic looked good towards the end of last year.

as for the dippers they showed in certain games last year that they can get results widout stevie me and torres.they played better than us in the lst 3 months but we were more consistent.

so it will be tough battle for us.plus vidic may look rusty initially and take some time to get back to his normal no non sense style.and of course we are going to play a completely new style of play,so we may take time to get completely used to it.

    hoping for the best.

    good morning

capacity more than 50,000=5 star and can host the Champions league final
capacity more than 40,000=4 star and cannot host the champions league final but can host UEFA cup final

dunno how old the list is .i knw dat juve have moved to a new stadium.i m nt concerned abt wembley coz it is nt home ground of any club.

  86. aig alex is god says:

i had heard some time back that old trafford was going to be expanded and capacity was going to be in excess of 90,000.anyone knows wat happened?

  87. Micky says:

    @AIG & King Eric

    Morning fellas.

We’ll be fine short-term without Vida, Evans is a suitable stand-in.

Without a doubt we have the best squad in the league.

    First Choice:

    VdS

    Brown, Vida, Rio, Evra

    Valencia, Carrick, Hargreaves, Nani

    Rooney, Berba

What if they all came down with swine flu?? Well, it’s okay, put out our second team:

    Foster

    Rafael, Neville, Evans, Fabio

    Park, Fletcher, Scholes, Giggs,

    Owen, Macheda

Capable of winning any game in the Premier League.

  88. Micky says:

    @AIG

My old company met with Man Utd regarding renewable energies at Old Trafford. We discussed in great detail the South Stand. That’s all I can say.

so will it happen in the near future,i mean say the next 4-5 years?i want OT to be the largest, and the noisiest stadium in the world.

the number of fans we have even 1,00,000 capacity stadium will not be enough

  93. Micky says:

    @AIG

Like I said I can’t say much, but it’s in the process. But the process is a long one.

You probably know this, but RIGHT behind the South Stand is a railway, which is a listed building and therefore protected, as well as a row of terraced houses on the other side.

Other problems include the fact the south stand contains TV studio, Camera and commentary boxes.

Should these be sorted, then we should see some progress.

  94. Dilardo says:

From what I have heard in the past, we would have to buy up the houses next to the railway in order to match the North Stand on the South Stand side. Another option which has been looked into would be for the South Stand to be built on pillars with the railway running under it (as would be the case if the houses were bought up).

If the houses are bought, we would be able to include corporate facilities in the new South Stand, if not, then it would be similar to the Stretford End with pretty much just the stand.

There is another option of adding quadrants to the South Stand with a wall heading up to bring the roof in line (i.e. South Stand not having seats as high up as the North, and instead having a vertical wall, of sorts).

I remember the stadium from 1990 and compare that to what we have now, it is unrecognisable, with only the South Stand left pretty much untouched. The Stretty and the North Stand have been built from the ground, the Quadrants added and the 2nd tier on the K Stand added.

SAF has pushed for all of this, chewing away at the ear of Martin Edwards and then Peter “I’ve always been a United supporter” Kenyon at every opportunity. He is again pushing for the South Stand to be extended and I wouldn’t bet against him in making it happen.

  95. Dilardo says:

This is what it could look like – view from Stretford End:

Yeah, have you not seen our new home kit???
