United Looking At New Keeper Afterall?

Sir Alex Ferguson has repeatedly claimed that Ben Foster is good enough to be England’s number one and will be replacing Edwin Van der Sar when he retires. Problem is, he doesn’t back up these claims with actions, with Tomasz Kuszczak getting more and more game time at Foster’s expense.

Ferguson recently claimed that we were not looking at signing the impressive young keeper, Igor Akinfeev. But today reports have emerged linking United to Shalke’s 23-year-old keeper, Manuel Neuer, after his agent, Thomas Kroth, said we had shown an interest.

“We know Manchester United are interested in Neuer,” Kroth told Sport Bild. “Manuel would also like to play with a team that has a better international level.”

Agent bullshit? Or genuine story?

What I’ve been going for all along. This kid is fucking class. Just one search on YouTube is all you need, but my favorite was this one against Porto:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY-0xuJ0edM

VDS is going to either hang up his boots or play one more year in Holland after the campaign, Foster is shite, Kuszczak has been playing very well recently and I’d be more than happy to see him get a good run in the side, just to see if he can keep his level high. But come on, let’s get Neuer. Some of his saves are vintage Schmeichel.

  2. Berbatovs' love life says:

sounds like an agent trying to perk up some interest in his client.

if we are to sign a young keeper to be our future my list would be:

    Lloris
    Akinfeev
    Neuer

    in that order

  3. anbjerknes says:

Well, if they are going to bring in a goalkeeper to replace Edwin, then they might as well do it quickly. I don’t think the uncertainty surrounding the replacement is good for neither Foster nor Kuz. Wether this is a real story or not, I guess we have to wait and see what happens in january or next summer.

I would love to see Foster make it as a United nr. 1, but I am afraid that his feet are not good enough, and he definetively has problems when questioned in the air.

  4. cav says:

Agent bullshit, just trying to up the price. Wish it was true, though.

  5. Berbatovs' love life says:

speaking of which, I think it would be valuable to bring in the replacement soon, let him sit under half a year with VDS and split time and then allow Foster to be shipped out and get on with his career!

That would be the best case scenario for all involved

  6. cotnic says:

I think for the future replacment for VDS there are a few candidates:

    Akinfeev
    Handanovic
    Neuer

    in that order ;)

Whilst I’ve never seen this guy live, I hope it’s true that we want someone new. Guys, Foster just ain’t up to it. He can’t say he wasn’t given a chance cos he was, and he blew it. We’re Manchester United, not fucking Portsmouth or Bolton or some other pile of shite, players don’t, and shouldn’t, get chance after chance at this club. When you get the shirt then impress because it might be a long time before you get it again. Kuz has come in for the last 2 games and done nothing wrong, Foster came in pre season and looked nervous. He was poor in the charity shield, and made several mistakes at the start of the season.
Sorry mate but thats enough, time to find a new club. Personally I’d love to see us use him as a makeweight in a deal for Modric, say Foster plus 15 million.

  8. kylelaw84 says:

Sounds like an agent just trying to build up interest in the keeper.
I don’t honestly know why Foster is getting so much stick. He’s had a rough few years with injuries and just looks like he’s short of confidence and has absolutely no luck at the minute. All he needs is a few good performances to sort this out.
The fella has ability in abundance which he’s shown glimpses of, wont take him that long to put it all together. Also Fergie rates him and he knows a lot more than any of us FACT.

  9. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

Not the first time ive hears this rumor. But an agents word is as useful to Me as the Puck stains on the wall behind my toilet bowl yesterday .

  10. GoatinaUnitedShirtShittingonmyLawn says:

Why are we trying to get a replacement for VDS. For fuck sake how fit do you have to be to stand still. As for reactions and awareness, I bet if a 16 year old lass had her arse in the fucking air, we wouldn’t be going Edwin you missed that one mate. Come on I for one realise the older you get the quicker your reactions become. P.S. I got these rot spots on me cock, does anyone know ………

  11. Tony Starks says:

Gets on my nerves when agents come out with this crap.. If they were negotiating with him they would not let him tell the world they are interested.. duh!

  12. Rob the Red says:

6′ 4″ of pure class if you ask me!

  13. Red phil says:

We have never bought a player after his agent has said we are interested in them, maybe after the club breaks the story. I bet the club makes the signing on party sign a confidential agreement.

Sounds like agent fishing to me.

  14. MUFCUM says:

    Hope it´s true.

    Bring in Neuer I say!

  15. King Eric says:

Off topic – Great to see the massive club down the road not taking tonight’s game too serious and giving their much vaunted youth the chance. Fucking jokers. Up the Gooners.

  16. hundone says:

Well I think buying a keeper is inevitable. Personally I don’t think that either Kuszczak or Foster is a long term first-choice keeper candidate. They both have qualities, but neither of them performing consistently, or are looking confident enough after a backpass. Which is fucking ridiculous, but I get a heart attack almost every time when I see a backpass and a rushing forward towards our keeper.

I’m honestly hoping that we are going for a new, young, great goalkeeper, and let Ben and Thomas fight for the #2 spot. Loser gets to leave.
Maybe a good idea for a reality show. :)

  17. Che Guevarist says:

Am I the only one who thinks that Kuszczak deserves a go? He really took his chance when given the occasion and made some amazing saves against Portsmouth.

  18. King Eric says:

Che Guevarist – No I do as well mate after his last couple of performances. I have been a critic of Tom but on Saturday and last night he was fucking top drawer. How good could he be given a decent run?

  19. Andrew says:

With all this talk of a successor to VDS when he retires, it brings back memories of 1999-2005 era when we went through a circus of keepers; some reasonably successful and others plain amusing.

Im in my 20s now and I grew up watching United with the Great Dane between our posts…I mean i knew he was awesome but I thought it was most good keepers’ god-given right to make flying top corner saves, leap above the tallest strikers to pick up crosses, throw the ball half-pitch to launch counter attacks (fond memories of Giggsy benefiting the most from these), and generally abuse the defenders in front of them into shape.

Point is, I couldn’t bear to go through another prolonged period with a good keeper between our posts, it simply won’t do.. we need someone ffin great who’d not only calm the team but also single-handedly earn us points, and hell provide a couple of get-out-of-jail-free cards a season. And this is indeed an elite club of maybe a dozen keepers in the world.

Foster: I can’t rate him…his gaffs were 100% unnecessary..we’ve had our fill of clowns

Kusz: has put up a pretty good case for himself when called upon. He’s a great shot stopper and doesn’t get caught napping after prolonged periods of having nothing to do…Also seems to have fire in is belly and passion like Schmikes. He’s still a bit suspect at collecting crosses though…so he’s a tad short of being great in my opinion. Verdict anyone?

  20. Sir Ryan Giggs says:

personally I dun think either foster or kusczak can make it at united on their showings so far. Although kusczak has been impressive in his last two outings but yet I think we need to sign a quality keeper and keep one of foster or kusczak as back up keeper. Neuer seems to be decent enough.

  21. sprite says:

spot on andrew, the GK position is very important!

  22. Wayne wonder Rooney says:

Tevez scores against the pathetic defenders at Arsenal… Anyways anybody can score against them these days

  23. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

Drogba just scored against Blackburn!!!!!!!! Drogba. I taught Chelsea had the biggest strongest most amazingly deep squad in the history of sport . Wonder what Rooney was doing last night while our kids where beating the spurs first team 2-0 in a compitution they haven’t had a goal against in.

  24. jellybean says:

yeah, ancelotti has said he wants to take the carling cup seriously…and soon after drogba scored, kalou did as well….guess it’s upto us to ensure chelsea don’t win it, arsenal isn’t really doing much against city either.

  25. jellybean says:

hah, SWP scored as well….and i thought arsenal’s kids were so much better than ours….the press really knows fuck all!!!

  26. Gaffer says:

Dont like the way Neuer comes in the tackle with his feet first. Aint he brave enough? Thought Akinfeev bossed the box adgainst Unite despite his age, and he was outstanding at the biggest stage. Would go for Akinfeev and Foster out if any.

  27. pawaka21 says:

i do think in the last 2 games tommy had perform well. give him a good decent run and we should start from there whether we still need ben or not. as for the rumors, did we always see that trend all the time rite? when its come to any decent player, the scum agent will use united as a big springboard to push the price. i do believe in the neuer case, the agent try to ignite a bidding war within the bundesliga as bayern and other big clubs such as stuttgart also looking for a replacement, plus bayern had suffered tremendously this season. even ac milan still cannot finds a decent goalie to challenge the calamitous dida. if ever fergie wants to search for a new keeper, then IMO it will be most likely akinfeev.

    shame scum agents….

  28. Welbz19 says:

    Uniteds ‘kids’ > Arsenals ‘kids’!!

Wonder if they will get slaughtered in tomorrows papers?????

  29. King Eric says:

Oh dear. What an absolute laughing stock of a club. All the horrible fucking fans waving their tacky flags at Wastelands. Well done Citeh you managed to beat a frankly awful Arsenal academy side. The way they were carrying on down at the council house you would be mistaken for thinking they had just won the European Cup. Jokers. As for Arsenal hopefully this will dispel the myth spread by the likes of Pat Barclay that their “wonderkids” are the bollocks. They are fucking average and like the first team lack any balls or killer instinct. If I were a gooner I would be well pissed off that Wenger had played a team like this at the expense of a trophy. Best footballing team in England? No fucking chance. Not fit to lace United’s boots.

Hilarious that the rentboys are struggling at Blackburn with a full squad.

  30. pawaka21 says:

they are waving flags like they had won’t premiership..stupid citeh

  31. King Eric says:

More minutes for Drogba and the Rentboys. Ancelotti is using them FAR too much. Wonder if he is aware just how tough the winter months can be in the English Premier league. They will be fucked come Xmas and United will canter past.

  32. Long John O'Shea says:

we got shitty!!! in the semi

  33. Rob the Red says:

King Eric: Astute and correct……….as usual

  34. Xyth says:

Bitters were so poor in the first half any decent team would have stuffed them. Arsenal kids were quite poor going forward and were getting themselves needlessly into trouble. How can they be better than our kids, with or without my red tainted spectacles, I do not know.

Blackburn Chelsea finished 2:2 ET being played. I wished it was this was a premiership match. Rent boys fielded quite a strong team and yet could only draw in 90 minutes, so hopefully this gives some hints to idiots who are claiming that they have already won the League.

  35. King Eric says:

    Fucking get in!!!

Cannot wait for first week in January. Dirty Leeds Scum in FA then the bitter blue noses in the Carling Cup. Cue all the pundits saying “I wonder if Fergie will stick with the same team as it is a strong Citeh side”. Course he fucking will and the lads are more than capable of beating that set of heartless greedy bastards. Come on United.

  36. King Eric says:

Rob the Red – Cheers pal.

  37. denton davey says:

Best-case scenario = one more year of continuity with Edwin and a slow transition to another man of similar quality. There’s no question that VDS is a bit less agile than back in the day BUT he more than makes up for his declining athleticism with positioning, ball-playing, and the confidence his presence brings to the defenders.

Worst case scenario = give Ben Foster more chances; the guys just isn’t up to the pressure of the job and he has shown that repeatedly in the chances he has flubbed. His presence creates insecurity and nervousness that runs through the team in front of him.

Thomas Kusczsak is close to becoming TheMan – but, I think, close-but-no-cigar. I was very impressed with Handanovic who plays for Udinese and is the Slovenian keeper – he was excellent in puncturing Guuuuuus Hiddink’s Russian balloon but I’ve never seen him otherwise. Neuer is supposed to be the replacement for Olly Kahn and those are big shoes to fill; Akinfeev has been Russia’s number-one since he was 17 (!) but what does that mean ?

Getting a quality replacement for Edwin is priority number-one for SAF – he missed out on replacing TheGreatDane and there were years of absurdity, compounded by disasters.

Goal-Keeper is the one player for whom price should be no object – get it wrong and it has massive repercussions; get it right and the team has a strong foundation.

  38. Xyth says:

It is getting even worse for the rent boys. I hope Rovers prevail!

  39. pawaka21 says:

    denton davey…

absolutely mate. money should be no object. in fact, do we ever find a united kids goalie coming through the rank ever and be the number one? correct me if im wrong, but as rachubka, heaton, pollitt, culkin, and current amos finds it hard to break into the first team, not to mention even to take up subs bench. so i do think we should get it right the first time, and hopefully we wont repeating the barthez-carrol-howard merry go round, as what bosnich-van der gouw merry go round as well. we must get it right..

  40. Andrew says:

money should be no object when buying a class goalie… absolutely agree Denton Devey.

Kusczsak should deservedly get a run when VDS is rested. But at the end of the day I reckon he’d be a solid no.2 for us.

  41. Robert S says:

We really should be going for Adler instead of Neuer.
Adler is preferred to Neuer in the German national team. He’s also a huge United supporter! Rumour is that he’s even got a get-out-clause in his contract if United come in for him …

  42. kel says:

Seriously i do think he is a real class. Hope we can sign him.

  43. Ashish says:

If Kusczak plays well I doubt whether Fergie will go with another keeper.
