We had played 64 games in all competitions by the time the title was won, collecting the Community Shield, the FIFA World Club Cup and the League Cup along the way, as well as booking our place in the European Cup final.

In contrast, Liverpool had played 53 games in all competitions by the time the title was decided, failing to reach any cup finals and therefore ruling out any chance of silverware, making it their third year in a row where they have gone emptyhanded.

It’s fairly incredible to think that having played 11 games more, United still managed to win a few trophies and wrap up the title before the last game of the season.

When you consider we only actually started playing well in April, it certainly shows the vast difference between United and our rivals!

Even with putting all their rotten eggs in the Prem basket they still can’t touch us! Roll on Rome!!!!

3 years on the doll! Long may that streak grow!!

How nice will it be us repeating this again next year with all liverpool players and fans thinking that next year really really really is their year

Only part of the article I didn’t get. If I recall correctly we broke the record for minutes without conceding in January.

For every year we win the competition they will make up a new trophy to give themselves.

In the time i have followed United,we have never played these many games. And were it not for Riley,we would have also been in the FA cup. That’s why this season has been a bigger successe than the last one.Because we were faced with a lot more adversity.

  7. Scott the Red says:

Ryan – we did brilliantly well to stop teams from scoring, but we haven’t played good football for by far the majority of the season.

  8. timbo says:

    @ Ryan.

Actually, I agree with the author. It’s a testament t how poorly our rivals have played this season that United have managed to do so well, because in reality the team has had nothing like the fluency and attacking verve of the preceding seasons. Even during their long run without conceding a goal they were grinding out one result after another, rather than winning with their usual panache, and it wasn’t until the win over Chelsea that they really started looking like the United of old – though even after that they remained inconsistent.

Personally I think United will win the championship convincingly next season, based on nothing more than the fact that they had to play pretty poorly this season at times, and get saddled with a dozen or so more games than their rivals, for the other teams to even have a look in. Liverpool can’t get much better, whereas United have tones of room to improve. Youngsters like Anderson, Rafael, etc will get even better with the seasoning they’ve had this year, and the likes of Hargreaves will be back to bolster the midfield holding role where he’s been sorely missed at times, with all due respect to Michael Carrick’s performances this season. If United find another winger of quality for the left side, and a high quality attacking midfielder to help unlock the full potential of the forward line, United will be untouchable in the next few years.

In typical utd spirit, when we won our 18th, my thoughts flicked to how the fight for the 19th will turn out next year, as well as a reflection upon how this season has gone.

In a way, this season has been an extremely weird one. For one, the dippers actually competed till the second last game of the season. Secondly, we have almost won all of the trophies we have competed for, despite playing no where near our best. 1-0 victories have been the norm, and the campaign has been founded on solid clean sheets, rather than Ronaldo’s 42 goal haul last year. We have been professional, rather than exciting. We have lost games against quality opposition which, in retrospect, did not matter much. (Think Arsenal and Liverpool in the league). We have won games against quality opposition which arguably matters much more. (Think Inter and Arsenal in the champions league; Think Chelsea in the league when there was a need to kick-start our campaign; Think Villa in the league when we needed to prevent losing 3 matches in a row). We have been generally poor against the other top 3 sides (2 defeats to pool, a defeat and a draw to the gunners, and a victory and a draw to chelsea). And yet we won, and still with such amazing statistics to back it up.

Benitez said that there is no room for improvement for us, for there is a limit to how many players we can go for, given our already impressive squad strength in depth. He believes that this is not the case for pool, and therefore improvement is in order for them. This, given the fact that they have run us close this season, tells him that they will win the league next year.

Now, let us look at these issues in perspective. Pool has done well in terms of results against the top 3 this year. Four victories and two draws is extremely impressive. They lost the title due to the great number of home draws. Now, I believe that they can correct the number of home draws next year. But I doubt that the top 3 sides will let them do so well again. Chelsea had their inner turmoil at some point in the season, Arsenal had extreme injuries to their squad, and we certainly were not playing well. This may or may not happen again next year.

What I finally want to point out is that I believe we can improve next year. Tons of it. And improvement is not in getting more players, like what Benitez believes, but by getting the current crop to play better together. We must extrapolate on our defensive strength this year, and work on our offensive fluidity next year. We must gain even greater tactical versatility to deal with different opposition. Rooney, Ronaldo and Berbatov can only get better next season – by their standards, this season was average, at best.

Pool can improve as well. I believe Benitez will try to improve his squad. But if he remains blind to the fact that Utd can improve further, and that this season was won whilst us not playing well at all, he then makes the mistake of overrating his team’s chances next year. And that can only be good for us. Expectations have been raised for pool. And expectations can be a huge burden, more so for a team like pool. So here’s hoping that they screw up again next year. :D

    FORGIVE MY LONG RANT.

  14. Dave Mack says:

This is a huge point that I haven’t as yet seen picked up in the press. Beyond the number of games everbody wants to minimalise our winning the World Club Championship. But surely the significance of that is not so much in beating the teams you meet out there but in the extra stress the travel, jet lags and games add to a team fighting on four fronts domestically and in Europe. Going on the run we did when we returned sets us apart. To win the C.L. as English Champions and to retain hopefully both as World Champions has never been done and may in fact never been equalled …..unless it’s by us!

  15. kshetrjna says:

where the hell are all the liverpool fans?? I remember them here claiming they used to be directed here through newsnow…where the hell are you now idiots????Scott…please start a thread called”where are the liverpool fans now?”It will be nice to get some friendly banter between 2 friendly clubs :p

  16. mikeman says:

Its very simple, greater resources and longer to build them up should always mean greater success.
When all the teams in the Premiership can have £30 million pound players sitting on the bench and have 80, 0000 seat stadiums then the true champions will be seen. For me the Champions this season are Everton, with virtually no money to spend and little revenue coming into the club, they have been the best team by a mile.
I long for the day the FA have the balls to introduce a cap on salaries & transfers, that way all teams will be competing on a similar level and money won’t buy success.
It is very sad that to be a really succesful team in the Premiership you have to spend lots of money and be in lots of debt.

  17. denton davey says:

More to the point – it’s not just total numbers of games played but when those eleven extra games had to be squeezed in – from January through the present.

So, if you’re statistically more precise then the issue becomes rather sharper since UTD have had to play a great many more games in the second half of the season, which has meant that there have been shorter recovery times between games.

On a related point – how many games have UTD sent out a “first eleven”. From my sense of things, there have been three, four, five and even six changes from game to game.

It’s a tribute to the strength-in-depth of UTD’s squad that SAF has been able to mix-and-match so effectively. And even the FA Cup semi-final with all those “kids” – which led the ABU’s to say that SAF and UTD had “disrespected ” the competition – should have been won in regulation time but the referee refused a dead-cert penalty when Welbeck was tripped in the box.

  18. Bob Koh says:

For me, the season will truly be over after we win the 64th match, the CL final. Against Barca, it will be a monumental battle for sure.
Oh, there’s still the FA Cup on the 30th! Come on Everton!

  19. socamad689908 says:

    AND THATS A FACT…

  20. wazza says:

United were playing in their 3rd gear (the economy mode) for most of the season.but we even saw the 6th gear of United against Spuds.the dippers, chavs and arsnl talk bout their top players being injured as their excuses not to win the league.what bout United then.we have missed Hargo & Brown for almost the entire season.Ron, Rooney, Berba, Rio, Evra, Carrick, Scholes, Gary, Rafael, Ando etc etc etc have also missed less/more matches at some crucial stage in the season.and then this bitter FSW talks bout missing Stevie Me & Torres as excuses for not winning the league.

  21. jcolas says:

I agree that we will be better next year… I don’t see the dippers improving substantially. Rafa Beneathus will probably try to buy some new good players while getting rid of good players he already has. This has been his strategy thus far and it only makes their team harder to gel.

  22. Muggaz says:

    @ boku youna

I was exactly the same – as soon as that whistle went on Saturday, I was already thinking about how awesome it would be to win it again next year, and really show those dipper planks… equalling the record is an amazing feat, but who wants to be equal with those wankers? We need to keep on winning, and really put them in their place!

Glory Glory Man United! and the reds go marching on!!!

  23. hasmukh says:

I dont understand what is wrong with Benitez. He has just lost the title race
and he still keeps on trumpetting what he has achieved this season. Surely Liverfool fans deserve more. I think the manager has gone rooney. Sorry, I mean looney. And then he says, if only we had…if only we did this…if only we had managed to…Come on. Every team goes through if only patch…. . As long as Benitez is there, Man Utd need not worry.

  24. kshetrajna says:

    @mikeman
what you say is not obviously true….there are loads of teams with resources but not able to win anything…Example Manchester Shitty…even Chelsea for all their resources have been a failure if you consider the amount of money which has been pumped into their team…United is not winning because of the money…we are winning because of SAF!!!!

  25. YUD says:

    boku youna, GR8 article !!!!

  27. TS says:

Wow, that’s 20% more games than for Liverpool. For every five games Liverpool played, we played six. Thanks for the data!
