@ D, if you are a Chelsea fan mate, I salute you for being honest. You see the patently bloody obvious about your club throwing it's money about, to satify the NEVER satisfied greed of players like Lampard etc. And it's not just the players from your club that are greedy. The trouble is, once the floodgates open, like they have at Chelsea, then all players at other clubs start to jump aboard the greed gravy train. A lot of the blame comes from the crooks, the agents, who just greedily are out to stuff their own pockets, and it's the fans who have to pay through their noses for this shit. Get rid of the agents, or cut their arms off, by wage CAPPING.

@Wippy, and you are being extremely naive if you think we can't keep him, when he is under contract. Ronaldo has already said, in the last two days, that no matter where he plays, he will never let his performances drop. This is after United told him they were not going to sell him, and NOT going to increase his present contracted, and agreed salary. So let's wait and see before you crow.

bluto - is the article self righteous simply because it's written by a red? Because like it or not, its true. Chelsea shot themselves in the foot playing 'Billy Big Wad' and it was always going to bite them on the arse. If a club doesnt appear to have a limit financially, not only does it attract mercenaries, it also creates them - as we've found to our cost with Lampard.

This is a naive article - as Wiggy wrote a bit earlier.

Weekly wages are only a small component of CR7's income - he's on every billboard in Lisbon and his "image rights" are going to skyrocket.

Those who are listening have heard the rumblings about the new line of CR7 clothing and accessories from Nike - this is going to be the crux of negotiations if the money bandied about is anything close to reality. We can get an insight into this new financial reality by asking a simple question: How much do Nike pay Tiger Woods (and Michael Jordan before him) ? My sense is that behind the scenes there are on-going negotiations for some sort of package deal in which his wages might be "kept in line" but he will be compensated lavishly by the UTD/Nike consortium.

Like Beckham before him, Ronaldo's appeal is much wider than just the UTD hard-core. The kid is on his way to being "the face of football". That alone makes him quite unlike, say, Rio or Rooney or any other player on UTD's books. But, of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that his wages have to be double or triple what Rio or Rooney are paid. What it does mean is that his wages AND image rights have to reflect this difference in quality.

The difference with Chelsea is that the RentBoyz don't have a player with the charisma and magnetism and international appeal of CR7. How charismatic is John Terry ? How magnetic is Frank Lampard's "personality" ? How appealing is Michael Ballack to an international audience ? In contrast, Ronaldo has it all - he is the complete package.

He's also a cagey,clever interview - but that's another subject.

I think the lack of responses Rob comes from the fact that everyone is too busy stiching up their sides from that hilarious gut buster you just gave us. Everyone except for Scott of course, who is no doubt cowering in a corner somewhere from the shame and embarassment of it all. I just hope he can somehow pull himself together to regain the courage to dare show his face again in public.

Seriously, a dick joke? Are you ten years old?

The tiny, tiny problem with all of this is that Chelsea don't reveal fees, salaries, or any of the other financial workings of the club. No shareholders, you see.

So when you say "highest-paid player in blah blah blah" and "Lampard / Terry compared to Shevchenko and Ballack", there's a problem.

As I said, it's just a tiny one.

These figures are made up by a journalist slightly brighter than you, and you've copied them from his newspaper.

Not to worry, though. I've no doubt you've had tiny problems for much of your adult life. I hear your girlfriend's the understanding sort, though.

You are being very naive if you really think Utd wouldn't negotiate with Ronaldo if they thought they could keep him.
