Valencia: I Humbly Accept Historic Shirt

Antonio Valencia has given his reaction to being given the #7 shirt for next season, following on in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona and George Best.

“I take the shirt with pride, but also with humility,” said Valencia. “The number 7 is very special. In recent years, few players have worn it. When I received the call [to wear #7] I did not hesitate to say yes, I wanted the shirt. I just want to keep playing and keep giving joy to the people of Ecuador and Manchester.”

He also tweeted: “I humbly accept the historic #7. Will do my best. Thanks to God, my family, ManUtd and all the fans for believing in me!”

Off topic, but reading on some other forums about the proposed partial IPO:

    1. Apparently, the prospectus says that the money will be used to invest in the squad (purchase/salary) and infrastructure? If that’s true, then it is a pretty clear admission, and the first of its kind, that we were being constrained, as opposed to the official line being trotted out so far.

    2. Also, there is speculation that one of the major reasons for the issue is to test the waters and see what the market really values United at, i.e. to dispel any risk of undervaluation during an eventual, larger IPO or private sale. Is this likely/plausible?

I haven’t gone through the documents myself, so would welcome an informed, unbiased opinion.

OFF TOPIC, but just read this comment on F365 regarding United’s proposed floatation.

Some great points I’ve always thought to myself, but never been able to write as succinctly as this fella has managed:

“No doubt I’ll be thoroughly censured for my bias/naivete/congenital lunacy for suggesting this, but the Glazer’s mooted flotation of $100m of United shares in NY, foundation of a Cayman Islands new company, and admission of the operational dangers of debt (I recall something about a “…road to ruin.” many years ago Mr. Gill) illustrates beautifully the flaws in regulation surrounding ownership of football clubs.

Admittedly, public flotation brings inherent risks of buy-out and takeover, and exploitation as a profit vehicle for investors, but there is something eminently unfair about the current state of play. United achieve success in the 1990′s with a combination of judicious spending and investment in youth, exploit and sustain it commercially through aggressive commercial and geographical expansion (thereby exponentially increasing television revenues, of which we still receive disproportionately and unjustifiably little), and find themselves subject to entirely benign interest by a multinational media company. Which is then thrown out as being monopolistic and contrary to the inherent competition required by sport. All well and good then, precedent set.

That Sheikh Mansour was allowed to buy City in the first place strikes me, therefore, as eminently unfair, given that the Monopolies and Mergers commission prohibited BSkyB from purchasing United in the late ’90′s. How one of the wealthiest people on the planet, with a diverse portfolio of companies that allow him to circumvent FFP (were the naming rights for the City of Manchester stadium really worth £400m to Etihad?), and sufficient money to sustain losses that would cripple any other club is allowed to purchase a club, but a publically listed company with similar ambitions, were not, is beyond me.

Whereas United were denied the opportunity for transcendental buy-out by BSkyB, City, a car-crash of a football club with no previous international fan-base, commercial presence or capital reserves (and a stadium built with taxpayers money), can be financially doped into a position they had no prospect of achieving organically. And that’s considered equitable and non-monopolistic. Right.

So whereas metaphorical self-made man United are deprived of the opportunity for continued growth, and then exploited and impoverished, City are cheap and easy enough to attract a sugar-daddy, and then strut in the public eye with a new wardrobe, fake tan, false pair of tits (surely Balotelli?), and peroxide hair-do. And this deserves our approbation and applause.

Either football should be an entirely unregulated, competitive and market driven environment, or a fully regulated one equivalent to the NFL. Both have their advantages. But the current state of play disadvantages the prudent (United, Arsenal etc.) and rewards those cheap enough to attract sugar-daddies with billions to spend and no gold Rolls-Royce to spend it on.”

  19. james21 says:

Thank god I haven’t already bought the Tablecloth. I can now put no 7 and Valencia on the back. Sorry WR 10 I still love you.
    Congrats Tony V.

    Good post stinkfly.

  20. Jeet says:

Bravo to whoever wrote that on F365.

Wayne is a poster on here whose views on the Glazer regime differ dramatically from mine, but he has a very pertinent point when he says that the popular media is all about “United is doomed because it cannot keep up with competition’s investment”, and too few shine a spotlight on the fundamentally unfair nature of such investment – unfair not just to United, but by and large every other club bar, hold it and let me count on my fingers, that’s right 5 European clubs with access to “helicopter-dropped” cash.

  21. King Eruc says:

His demeanour can’t be more different when compared to those that have previously worn it. Valencia is humble and will stamp his personality on it. Maybe it will give him more determination to want to impose himself on the big stage, could be the push and responsibility he needs. I’m not big on numbers but congratulation antonio, hoping to witness big things from him next season.

  31. kanchelskis says:

In mildly entertaining/interesting transfer news, Gylfi Sigurdsson has gone to Tottenham instead of Liverpool.

    1. LOL @ Liverpool who thought they would get him through the Rodgers connection.

    2. Does this free up Modric to a transfer? If yes, presumably to Real. If yes, can we get Sahin, Diarra or Khedira? Surely not all three of those would be guaranteed a decent amount of 1st-team football next season?

Apparently all the Spanish press suggest Real have cooled their interest in Modric. If he is to move only Chelsea and PSG could really afford and require such a player. Whether money has been put aside for signings, with the prospect of securing a windfall from the IPO, is another question? If so then I’m sure he will be wanted and afforded by us. Moutinho would interest me more, however, tht is just a personal oppinion and no contact has been made by us to Porto or his agent.

Each has aspects of their came that is better than the other.

Young: Workrate/tracking, crossing, set pieces, decision-making

Nani: Pace, touch/control/general skill, shooting, versatility

    On balance, I prefer Nani.

I promised all the South American lads that I would keep them informed when the big clubs came in. I did the same with Wilson Palacios. Real Madrid offered us more money but I advised him to go to United because I knew Sir Alex would look after him.’

Piss take of the highest order mate……..Cunt must be over his head!

  61. Mikekelly12 says:

Unfortunately Nani plays much better on the right than the left which is occupied by our new number 7!! Kudos to the fact that Nani can play left and right and on his day I would suggest Nani is world class. Has the ability to do whatever the fuck he wants (his goal at Arsenal 2 years ago) Unfortunately his lack of consistency is infuriating and takes away a bit of the shine from the player. Personally though I’d have him ahead of Young.

  62. Costas says:

    @King Eric

HI mate. I am good, thanks. How are you? Ah, thanks for clarifying. I was messing around though anyway! :P

  63. CedarsDevil says:

    Mike

His goal at Arsenal? You mean the own goal by Almunia?

  64. Jeet says:

… it’s a difficult one, and I suspect there are some myths out there, waiting to be destroyed. For instance, I recall reading somewhere (backed by stats), that Nani had one of the highest track-back, tackle and interception rates amongst wingers.

Nani can do things which Young cannot – no doubt about it.

Young can consistently do the things he does very well, and this season has popped up with some very important goals.

For my money, I would bet on Nani to start even ahead of TonyV when we are up against classy defenders, say, if we had to face Maldini all over again, or let’s say Lahm, my vote would go to Nani every time. Also when the tempo is is going to be high.

Against the more run of the mill, or slower sides, it’s very much up in the air.

Fact is, we are blessed to have 3 superbly talented wingers, and I have no doubt there will be ample opportunities for all three during the course of the season.

  65. CedarsDevil says:

Young any day for me……..Calling Nani world class is an exaggeration. Messi and Ronaldo are world class, Nani is no where near their talent or class

  66. james21 says:

  71. Mikekelly12 says:

    Cedars
He has the ability to be world class is what I’m saying. He can do things Tony and Young can only dream about just doesn’t do it often enough. Jeet – I wouldn’t say Young was particularly consistent this year either and if we were looking at who had the best Euro 2012 I think we’d all agree it was Nani.

  72. Jeet says:

@cedars: Not to re-ignite the world class debate, but Messi and Ronnie are on a different planet.

To me the definition of worldclass is “a player that would walk into the first XI of most top European clubs” – by that definition I would think Nani is pretty close, no? Apart from Bayern (Nani vs. Ribery very much debatable though) and Barca (because they hardly play with typical wingers), I can’t think of any top European club where Nani wouldn’t start.

  73. Jeet says:

    Mike – true that

Tony V is one of those great sporting stories. From hunger to the heights of the sporting world. So glad he is a Man Utd player.

Debt has hurt some big transfers, no shit. Well read RoM regs with banking backgrounds laid it out for me 18 months ago. Debt meant moderate spending till 2016 then with FFP even at 1/2 strength Man Utd to compete for the best again. That is why SAF new he could not lose his next best player to CR7 so he made the Glazzers pay the lad a going rate. And stayed the course with a plan put in play after the banking fall out.

A sheikh Pimp Daddy VS Glazzers????????????

    Robot Chicken shit!

  84. Jeet says:

Last post of the day – Nasri and the Camel…as promised. Zibbie and NRD are barred from reading this, for footballing reasons, of course… :)

Nasri is invited by the Sheikh for a luxury cum adventure vacation. On a sightseeing trip deep in the desert, a severe snowstorm blows up. Nasri is lost, can’t find his guide, sand in his GPS and is generally fucked. Roams around for 3 days and realizes that a) he is about to die of thirst and b) he is still a virgin.

His last wish is to get laid, but there’s nobody to oblige in the fucking desert. In his desperation, he thinks, “Damn it, it’s all about friction, just skin on skin, so I might as well try the damn camel. Beggars cannot be chosers.”

The camel however, is having none of it, and leaves our hero bruised, battered and bloodied. He’s just about to give up, curl up and die, when in the distance he sees the vision of the hottest, most angelic female form, dragging herself towards him, on the verge of collapsing, and with her clothes torn and frayed. He thinks his mind is playing tricks, it’s a mirage, but it turns out to be real.

On seeing Nasri, she begs him to guide her to the nearest village. Now Nasri being the right cunt that he is, thinks, “What the fuck, we’re both gonna die, but I’ll never get a better chance than this.”

Nasri: “I’ll guide you out of the desert, but what are you going to give me in return?”
Angel in Human Shape: “Ohh, anything, absolutely anything you want!”
    Nasri: “Sure about that?”
AiHS: “Absolutely, you have my word – please, just get me out of here!!”
Nasri, eyes glowing with self-fulfilment: “Well then, just hold that damn camel, will you?”

    Night, lads!

  85. samuel - united WE stand says:

I don’t agree with this inconsistency tag attached to nani either. He’s a player willing to gamble and do unusual things with the ball. The basics can be taught and will only get you to a certain stage, courage, skill and belief will take a player beyond the normal horizons. Nani might fail with his attempts at times but keeps trying and gets rewarded for it. I will always say it, he’s far more talented than any winger united currently have, he learnt all his craft on the streets of lisbon, this is where technical skills are born and i know some hate the word ‘technique’ but that’s exactly england continue to struggle on the international stage. Ability with the ball has got to be paramount, nani has it in abundance and has to be encouraged for wanting to try something unpredictable.

What is world class? well that’s open to opinion but for me, it’s a player blessed with all the ability and the mentality to impose it, it’s a player capable of match winning contributions and nani is amongst that category. He’s not messi or Ronaldo but no one across europe can match the contributions of these two but stepping down from their unbelievable level, you always get the likes of nani, Rooney e.t.c who aspire to such levels, who have the necessary skill to reach it but may or may never do, time will tell. Nani is world class for me, young, despite being a very good winger has proven nothing to get such a tag and i’m not putting him down here but i doubt he’d reach such world class levels simply because he doesn’t possess the gift of these players.

    @Samuel

Understand where you are coming from regards to talent. Its just that Valencia, a player who only got his basics right, is performing at a higher level than Nani most of the time.

Like I said, no point comparing our wingers, they all have their strength. And if you just think about it, their strengths are all different, which gives us options. Whoever can perform at a higher level at that point of time, will get the start, period.

Lately and specially last season, I miss someone like Robbo or Keane or Ince. Some bravehearts who play our central midfield like a wounded fighter who fight for his ground til last breath. I saw this quality in brief apppearance of Tom Cleverley early last season. After Tom got injured, the teams seemed to play without guts in midfield. After Scholes came, we have that guts again. But we could not play Scholes week in week out. So, I hope nothing happen to Tom C in Olympic. Then, we can have a proper team with guts to fight in midfield.

I’m salivating to see combo of Carrick, Tom C, Kagawa in the middle. Plus Scholes as Yoda to them. And maybe Tunni and Petruci as their back up.

August seems very long way to go. Grrr…

  101. samuel - united WE stand says:

Marq – Valencia is a determined player and i’m not suprised he performs more. Players like antonio are crucial to the team because as much as you can have the dazzlers, the players capable of brilliance at any moment (nani), you also need to balance it with valencia who is pretty formidable going forward in his own style.

All i’m trying to say is, if success is to accumulated then you want the great talents in the team, it’s easy to call them “Luxurious” players, it’s easy to lambast them for not running around like chickens on ecstasy, they need to be appreciated and encouraged. Their skill should be marveled at not ignored or shunned.

I think united have a batch of quality wingers. Nani, valencia, young all bring different style and All will be crucial to the Team’s success.

  102. LexxytheRed says:

Are you an Englishman. Welcome to the club at last.

Can’t agree Nani is world class sam. His decision making is consistantly poor, he’s selfish and ball greedy.
He has the whole ingredients to be World class but until he changes his attitude he’ll just be very good on his day. How many times will he sky a shot over the bar when other players are in fantastic positions or run a ball out of play when he should have passed it long before.
Great to watch on his day and glad he’s at Utd but he’s a very frustrating player indeed.

Sir Alex is a football manager, not an accountant. I don’t recall him lying? David Gill however did come out and say that United were financially sound and could continue to be competetive with such a huge debt as it was sustainable. The IPO report suggests how glaringly innaccurate those statements from Gill were. Either he Gill and the Glazers are not financially astute, they horribly misjudged what Sir Alex was able to achieve with little little financies or they were pulling the wool over our eyes. I think everyone on here realises that the last few seasons that saw us challenge for trophies was purely and simply down to Sir Alex. I think the Glazers thought he could continue to work miracles but last season has made them realise that even HE is human.

It’s all over Sky Sports. RVP has decided not to extend his contract at Arsenal.
Looks like he is on the way to Citeh then…!

  108. samuel - united WE stand says:

The days of the dynamic gung ho midfielders like the controversial but legendary roy keane are long gone. You get midfielders with definite fixated positions (deep lying playmaker, defensive midfielder, attacking playmakers). Football has moved on and fans better evolve with it. Box to box midfielders are diminishing across europe, teams flood the centre now. FERGIE knows that hence the purchase of attacking playmaking midfielders like kagawa and powell, they both may well be a start to a shift in formation from the gum chewing master tactician. Next season will be interesting, we shall see how he fits in players and how they play. A more flexible formation will see united play more free flowing attacking football but with balance and authority.

    BREAKING NEWS:

A naked drunk high on a peg of schnapps has been seen dancing around a fire made of cedars in the land of cedars. Policemen found him screaming loudly to the gods to ensure his long-lost son reaches the place of their spiritual ancestors. Someplace called the theater of dreams in a town near the sea.

You guys heard anything about this? Any sources?

  116. samuel - united WE stand says:

James21 – yes i understand he can be infuriating at times but most attacking players are, he’ll try do difficult things rather than lay a simple pass but i think his positives beats the negatives. Decision makings will come with maturity and i think nani has improved massively Since he joined united. I think he’s world class and a player i would not want to lose, you’ll never get a flawless player (messi?). His contributions of nani in the euro tournament shows he’s ready to step up another, we should get him signing the new deal, he’ll be winning united matches regularly.

If RVP is leaving, then he’s doing it for the money imo. So there’s only one club that has a chance at getting him?

  120. james21 says:

I don’t think he is world class. He’s come on leaps and bounds at Utd and like I said he has all the ingredients to be world class. I actually like him and he’s great to watch but theres so many times where I want to strangle him. I think he craves the attention that Ronaldo got at Utd and maybe that effects his jugement.

    Cedars
Next you’ll be swapping alcohol for cream tea’s and football for croquet. You English Oak You.

  121. FletchTHEMAN says:

RE IPO. One of the things that I really relished when the Glazers moved to a US release was the amount of detail we would get about the workings of the business.

One thing I expected as well was a rash of articles by idiots who don’t know much about US investment prospectuses.

A Prospectus is meant to reveal all the worse case scenarios with the express intention that when your wee gran decides to invest her last shilling she can’t go back and say she was duped if she looses it all.

A prospectus is like the small print on your bottle of medications. If you read them you will find statements that may include death and stomach ulcers, even on aspirin.

IF we do have a thread on the IPO, I TRUELY PRAY that it is introduced by someone who doesn’t have an anti Glazer agenda and immediately focus on the clearly apocalyptical elements of the IPO.

The news release by MUST and the articles in the guardian and the times were just that, fear mongering. We don’t need that.

What we need to hear is what we have learned from this wealth of data that will be usefull going forward.

Things like the actual number of the Debt where the funds will go.
    1) @ £423.3M (down considerably from 4 years ago?)
    2) The purpose for raising the funds: they intend to use the proceeds to pay down the debt and invest in the club.
    3) Where previous funds have gone: loans to family aside, there have not been big payments to the glazers which were forcaste by some.

Things that are not useful are uninformed statements about Class A and Class B shares. All major corporations use elements such as this. Making an issue of this reveals more about the agenda of the writer than it does about the Glazers.

I am not a Glazer apologist. We would be better without leveraged ownership. But to continually shout about things you don’t understand is just not useful.

The IPO is an opportunity to measure where we are.
If this is successful, we may see future releases of shares. I expect each release will be accompanied by additional releases of information about the financial footing of the club.

Hopefully, debt continues to decrease, and investments in the squad rebound. Information is what we have gained. Let’s learn from it.

  122. Costas says:

Forgot Nasri. 4 players in 4 years.

  123. mattbw7 says:

well fletchtheman, in the new prospectus they finally admit the debt is screwing us, I’d post a link but you’ll find it on most “broadsheet” websites and read David Conns article in The Gaurdian for a balanced view, it isn’t good reading.

How about the payment of 10m to the Glazers that was then used to pay off bonds they had purchased against us in the last refinance, you couldn’t make it up.

  126. Pratyush says:

    Poor Cedars.

His son is gone, possibly to City. He did say that he would lose all respect for RVP if he did though…

And they’ve finally proved it, Arsenal really are City’s feeder club…

  132. FletchTHEMAN says:

Matt, My point exactly. Every owner takes funds out of the club. It is an investment after all.

The crippling aspect of this ownership model is the 500M the club have paid to service and buy back debt. Not the smallish (relativley) sums paid to the Glazers. Not by my and your budget obviously, but relative to a club worry over 1 billion?

Sadly, we can’t go back. But we can learn and hold the family to the fire to use the funds we have to invest in the club.

I don’t know why people are putting a negative spin on this IPO. No, we can’t opporate effectiveley with crippling debt, but at least they’ve now admitted that and are making plans to put it right. The only sad point is that it has cost us £500m to find that out!! But now an IPO is in place that pays ZERO dividends and whose SOLE purpose is to pay down the debt and invest in the team. How is that a bad thing???

RVP sucks dick… if you catch my drift….just saying!

This is probably not going to be popular, but I think Valencia is not suited to be the number 7 and Nani was the obvious and superior choice. Nani is the more creative and more brave player between teh two and is a better fit with the heritage of the no7 than mr effective Valencia.

I really hope this doesn’t mean we’re going to lose Nani. Posters on this blog who by in large never seemed quite happy wtih Cristiano will have the same reaction once they appreciate the imagination and spark Nani brings us.

The club have been working to reduce the debt and this is the next phase. Late in the day, but never too late surely.

Does anyone think that Magnier and McManus, or previous owners, didn’t take profits?

The history of the number 7 shirt at United was that it always went to out and out right wingers! So in that sense Tony V7 is a perfect fit. The first none winger to wear it was Bryan van Robson (for cedars) and that was only because Coppell was out.

Does anyone know Ian McGarry from the BBC? Is he a blagger or is he well informed? He says RVP will complete his move to city within 2 weeks for a fee of around £22m. Contract of £225k per week already agreed.

good choice giving the number 7 shirt to united’s best wide player. I have always had mixed feelings with valencia, that some games he can be a little one dimensional, once a fullback stops him using his left foot to go out wide on the right he can be stopped. But valencia is still united’s best wide player by quiet a distance, if the boss give valencia the number 7 shirt just after ronaldo had left, the pressure and expectations would have and could have been the undoing of valencia’s united career. I am delighted the number 7 shirt ihas been given to one of united’s first team players, and not wasted on a squad player

New keeper would be expected to move right into the Reserves as he is a year younger than Sam Johnston who is the only reserve keeper on our books. Rumors that we were in for the england U19keeper Butland, but the deal for Alvarez puts an end to that if true.

Anyway, the lads Twitter account now lists him as a United player. Let’s see when/if the club confirm it.

    Bienvenido a United hijo!

  211. samuel - united WE stand says:

One area where united are really strong is the goalkeeping department. De gea, lindegaard, amos, sam johnstone. Why on earth are united signing another fucking keeper? This transfer will be one i have no answer for.

  212. Brigadier19 says:

I can honestly say we are well and truly ”Fucked”

    :) :) :) :)

  213. samuel - united WE stand says:

The biggest joke today has been the rumours linking andy fucking hairy biker carroll to Ac milan. How low will have the standards of the illustrious club dropped if they sign him? gotta be a joke surely?.

Anyone feel van persie is all but ready to join city? if he has any respect for arsenal, he’d leave the premier league.

  214. destiny says:

    Keep the # flying.

  215. Mikekelly12 says:

    Samuel
Got a funnier one. Tomorrows headline in the Daily Mail is Robin the Red. Says were ready to gazump city and sign RVP….. Haha!!

  216. WillieRedNut says:

United have sent a delegation to Brazil to sign Lucas Moura. Daily Mirror exclusive. Say no more….

  217. samuel - united WE stand says:

MikeKelly – the papers are really running out of ideas. Van persie to united? Never going to happen and no thanks. what next? milner to replace messi as the new king of camp nou?. Goodness me!

  218. NBI Red Onion says:

Where is the news on the fact Glazers going bust and financially in trouble re their whole empire. The Chavs. Milked United for 500mn and loaded 400mn of debt now they want to float the club on the NY exchange. It’s a fucking game to them. Morons.

  219. Costas says:

WTF. We needed another goalkeeper as much as I need the new Bieber album. I really hope this isn’t the “1-2 things” Fergie was looking into.

  220. WeAreUnited says:

is this true about cantona -> Cantona received an eight-month worldwide ban and various fines, while he attempted to leave the club on a number of occasions, but he remained and went on to claim four Premier League titles, two FA Cup wins and three triumphs in the Charity Shield, while he also came third in the 1993 Ballon d’Or.

    did he try to leave+?

  221. Wakey says:

    @mikekelly12
You need to remember its a financial document that has many legal consequences if investors even think something the information was slightly oversold. It was the same situation with Bond’s documentation where there was a lot of worst case scenarios raised because they had to be to cover themselves.

i’m pretty sure if you get hold of the Facebook documenting for their float it posts far from the rosy situation that they really are in. I certainly know Zynga’s (creator of Social Networking games such as FarmVille) wasn’t despite the vast revenues and low operational costs of the company.

This is just the Glazers next step in the plan they had since day 1 (not the floating per say but the refinancing of the debt). The Bonds mature in 5 years so they were always going to be partially refinanced, I’ve been saying all along I expected there to be some sort of debt still attached to the club after 2017 but reduced as while the debt figures were in an acceptable range it was at the higher end.

Now it’s happened earlier than I expected but we have seen repeatedly the Glazers don’t hesitate in pulling the trigger. When a chance to refinance and reduce the principle of the debt and also reduce the interest payment they have taken it (it’s where Liverpool got into trouble because they continually hesitated and missed the boat) so while it’s early it’s no surprise they have done it, especially when they are being advised they can get rid of a chunk or even all of it without having to pay dividends to the new shareholders.

When it comes to the lack of interest  entitlements that is surprising, however despite what people seem to be thinking it doesn’t mean the club suddenly has a windfall. That extra £40mill a season DOESN’T help.

The issue on signing players hasn’t been the transfer fees as the spending plus the offers submitted where they player has either gone chasing the money or just had a preference for another club. That money’s been there and the problem lies in wages and it wouldn’t matter if costs were reduced to ZERO the wage budget wouldn’t rise.

The wage budget has since before the Glazers been 50% of revenue as wages are what get clubs in trouble and that’s the only sensible option. Costs don’t pay a part with revenue, they could magically get costs down to Zero and the wage budget wouldn’t shift up. All that will happen is the club will have between £7 and £44mill a year extra in cash without really helping.

All that extra money can really do is either sit in the bank doing nothing or it will go on schemes aimed to raise the revenue further (for example expanding the stadium but personally as its the SAF stand that needs upgraded which past estimates suggest would costs over £120mill to increase the ground by 20k I doubt that will happen as its not costs effective. To get 20k more into OT ticket prices would need reduced across the board so you would the new 20k to generate enough income over a reasonable period of time to hsxc £120mill plus the gate receipt reduction on the other 75k )

  222. Wakey says:

    @WeAreUnited

He made one attempt to leave a he felt he was being treated unfairly.Fergie made a mad dash to speak to him and talked him out of it

  223. Ash says:

I have read many news and articles of IPO to understand its working and have to say its not bad. Firstly we need not pay 40 millions each season for the debt and secondly Its quite possible that IPO could wipe out the debt. I also read the risk factor and it is very unlikely that Manchester united would miss out on champions league. I will not even talk of getting relegated. So the risk factor are not that much.

Now even the glazer’s will be under pressure as they know if we don’t perform well in the pitch it will affect them. The success of IPO depends in our performance. If we are successful and keep on winning trophies our debt will be over.

  224. Ash says:

I am very happy that Tony V gets the number 7 to wear. He is a class player and will give his 100% in every match.

  225. Zino says:

  227. FletchTHEMAN says:

  228. Jeet says:

Apparently, Le Arse are adamant that they would rather let Cedars’ lovechild leave on a free than sell him this year. Yeah, right…

Had a hilarious conversation with a gooner yesterday, he kept blabbing “Don’t worry, RvP is nothing special, we are getting Podolski, in Monsieur we trust, we will be back…”, till I had to scream at him, “You fucking tit, I dont give a shiny fart whether you guys are back or not, I just don’t want to see that dutch bastard at shitty!”

Shut him up and gave him a hurt, “jeez, I thought you loved me” look on his face :)

  229. Panderi says:

    Morning Reds!

So Robin van Pussy has decided to fuck off. Seen a couple of gooner friends go on about how he’ll sign a new deal and how he’ll want to end his career as an Arsenal legend. Also how with their new signings and Mvilla they’ll challenge for the league. Well there goes your legend admitting your club are not good enough to win trophies anymore :D If he wants to stay in England can’t see anyone other that City signing him. Don’t think he’ll go to Juve or any Italian club. Barca maybe if they decide they won’t play with 3 midgets upfront next season..

  230. lordrt says:

A few days not been here and No.7 shirt is already allocated
Fergie give me my shirt back

On a serious note, Valencia deserves this shirt given his performance last season and if he stays injury free he will create chaos on the opposition once again. But does this also mean we are shutting down the shop and no more transfers???

  231. CedarsDevil says:

Now now folks, behave, no need to be calling my son all sorts on here…….It hurts you know!

“I love United more than I hate the Glazers” – great quote!

On that, how many on ROM would buy a share or 2 to help United rid the debt but knowing the $$$’s are going to the Glazers.

I would! because as quoted, I love United more than I hate the Glazers.

  238. MarkoWire says:

Valencia hs been immense for united since he arrived. The critics slammed Fergie for signing him as replacement for Ronnie. United would never be able to replace Ronaldo but Valencia has been fantastic and gets on with the job at hand. He may be a different player to Ronaldo but hes been very affective. He suffered that horrific injury and again critic thought he wouldn’t come back the same. But again credit to him, from the momment he step back on that pitch he was supurb. Lets hope knighting him with the legendary No 7 makes him better. Now thats a scary thought. Rise AV7

  239. Robbo says:

    Ash

The $100m is a ‘placeholder’. It is like a minimum amount. I have read some where that they are looking to raise $1b.

    http://thepeoplesperson.com/2012/07/04/manchester-united-to-float-on-the-new-york-stock-exchange-within-90-days/

Another interesting take on the whole IPO thing.

I am no financial expert but I am going to be going through the entire Prospectus to see what it says. I’d like to read first hand what all the fuss is about. It’s amazingly huge but there’s a lot to be gleaned from reading it, that’s for sure.

Wakey made certain things a bit clear yesterday, so that’s good. I’d also love to read what Stateside has to say about all this if he is around. And I am still waiting for Anders’ perspective on the IPO, since he is the be-all and end-all of football/United finance for me.

Overall, I will always be against public listing of a football club. When the Singapore listing was initially announced, I had a discussion with Stateside over the adverse effects it can have. Anything and everything can trigger a steep drop in the share prices. Market volatility is another factor as well. I personally wouldn’t want United to be listed at all.

However, we are in a situation where the club’s finances are in total disarray. Capital is needed and the least risky method in general public is listing on a stock exchange. So, there you have it. I am still against the whole idea but I’ve made my peace with it and do support the move to a large extent since a large, if not the whole, percentage of our debt stands to be cleared from the proceedings.

The biggest problem for United will be selling the IPO. The shares have no dividend and 10 times less voting rights over the shares held by the Glazers. That is not the best proposition for prospective buyers. However, this is Manchester United we are talking about. The biggest brand in world sport. There are still numerous markets we haven’t tapped and the potential for our growth is enormous. Nearly every major brand wants to be associated with United for marketing reasons. That has to be reason enough to buy into United. The value for increase in the share price is great. Whether that alone will be enough to make up for reduced voting rights and no dividends remains to be seen?

Personally, I’d like the Glazers to be in-charge of a debt-free United. They’ve proven themselves to be efficient businessmen (apart from the whole debt thing). I am not a Glazer defendant but anybody who cannot see that they’re better than being open to takeovers from sugar-daddys is living in denial. They don’t disrupt the functioning of the club in general and their aggressive marketing (needed in their position) is exactly what we’ll need to push the prices up even after the IPO.

  245. CedarsDevil says:

    Soy Sauce

What are you on about pal? RvP at United would be a match made in heaven

  246. AlphaRS says:

I think The Glazers have proven themselves to be shrewd businessmen. Off the back of the global fan base they have incresed the revenue coming in to the club through marketing and consistantly tried to reduce the interest payments by borrowing money at a reduced rate or paying down the debt.
What I was never happy about was the leveraged buy out of Manchester United.
No matter how much of an expert anyone is their is always a possibility of it all going wrong and if it did Manchester United would have been no more. Everything top to bottom would have been broken up and sold off starting with the players, the training ground, the stadium. It is that risk that made me dislike The Glazers.
In an ideal world we would have perhaps wanted a fan based ownership where we had more of a say in the running of the club, but would we be bringing in the kind of money in to the club we are now? Looking at the amount of money spent on interest looks eye watering and on the face of it we could say that this money could have been spent on other things such as transfers or increasing the stadium capacity. But if it were not for The Glazers that money wouldn’t be there in the first place.
I used to dislike The Glazers alot. But as time has gone on my opinion has slowly changed.

  247. Chris says:

With a possible move to 4 2 3 1 this season it will be interesting to see how they adapt but with his new found confidence I think it could be a huge season for the Ecuadorian. Excited!

  248. Jeet says:

@Balaji: That’s a good read – even if the ipo raises 200 mil (I doubt it will hit the 1bn mark), that’s the debt down by half

  249. Bobby Charlton's combover says:

A friend of mine did a thesis on floating football clubs and his conclusion conveyed one fairly simple message which was to say that it is a bad idea. They are not conventional businesses and are not run nor are subject to ‘normal’ market forces. Personally I haven’t bought United shares and I won’t in the future.

  250. Ash says:

That was well written by Paul Bienkowski. Thanks for the link balaji. I really hope we manage to eradicate considerable amount of debt if not the full debt. I just hope glazers don’t take some amount out of the money raised by IPO.

  251. Marq says:

A club that is owned and has decisions made by fans is not a good idea at all. It is far from ideal. Even on this forum itself, you can see how silly and stupid fans can be. Hate the Glazers all you want, but if you look away from the debt, they have been the perfect owners, leaving all football matters to Sir Alex. Compare that to Liverpool and the likes Chelsea & City, you will see that we should be glad with who we got.

On a side note, another day, we get linked to another player, Lucas Moura

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRuTap8MBxg

He looks good, but I’ll say the defence are all shit as well, lol

  252. Jeet says:

@Bobby Charlton’s combover: There are some industries for which going public is generally a bad idea – professional services, e.g. management consulting or audit firms, is one that comes to mind. Typical exit path is in the form of a sale, or if enough cash is being generated – a partnership. There’s a very good reason why so few, if any, of the large football clubs are publicly listed. I wouldn’t bet against the Glazers buying back the shares at some future date.

  253. Bobby Charlton's combover says:

@Jeet – you mean they want to raise money to float the club then hope the shares tank – buy them back for a pittance and de-list the club after more than halving the debt?

  254. Jeet says:

Depends on the time horizon, and the investment appetite. From what I’ve seen, the glazers seem to think they are onto a good thing, and are loathe to relinquish 100% control over the club. Of course they won’t buy back the shares at their peak value, but not necessarily “hope for them to tank”.

  255. parryheid says:

Investors typcally hate being prejudiced against. I work at a bank in London and typically have to convince clients that want to keep a tight leash over voting control that it is a bad idea. I mean, i have a portfolio of companies that I invest in personally but I would never enter into a position like that even if i am only owning 0.0000001% of a company and my vote would matter little anyway.

Nevertheless, the dual share structure has worked for some companies. The Murdoch run News International as a good example. If you ignore the battering their share price has taken post the failed Bskyb bid and post the phone hacking scandal, it was a very successful media company despite its obviously flawed share structure.

I would point out a few things in case people are wondering, I have only skimmed over the short-form prospectus atm so can’t be too thorough. Sorry if you knew this already, I don’t mean to patronise.

The actual amount raised will be more than US$100. I phoned my mate at Jefferies in London and he said he would ask around as he knows a few people @ the NY office. Initial thoughts were this could be over US$500m, and anywhere up to US$1bn. It all depends on investor demand. If they can get the price they want (i will come onto this in a minute) then I can definitely see them flogging US$1bn. This is for 2 reasons. The first is that share sales are expensive. (genius) Let me elaborate. The cost of MUFC listing in NY without any sale of shares will still be high. Listing fees, acc fees, legal fees. That whole document of 283 pages would have been prepared even if they weren’t selling any shares at all. That is required just to list as a public company. Therefore it is cost effective to split your fixed costs (those mentioned above) over as large a transaction size as possible. The only cost that will increase is the listing fees (negligably) and underwriting fees (massively). They also do not have the problem of losing control of the company (as outlined above). Basically, if demand is there, they will make the most of it. We won’t know the banking fees until the underwriting agreement is finalised. Typically in the US legal fees are lower than the UK but banking fees are higher.

Markets are picking up nicely at the moment. The IPO market is still pretty lethargic after a really promising start to the year. Still a lot of anger about following the Facebook debacle so there is some weariness that may detract from our valuation. Morgan stanley off the syndicate was a good move; they were one of the main protagonists for the Facebook valuation and so are keeping their head down at the moment. Could be other reasons like they didn’t agree with the Glazer’s valuation though – proven by the existence of Jefferies as the lead bookrunner (unusual to say the least) as smaller banks like Jefferies suggest higher valuations to get onto syndicates they wouldn’t otherwise have got anywhere near. I have absolutely no idea baout valuations at this point, but the banks must be nearing the Glazer’s estimation for this to be proceeding now – 90 days to get it done.

The risk factors. Whilst it might look all doom and gloom, the factors listed in this section as ‘threats’ to the business is just complete legal bollocks that covers the companys backs should a doomsday scenario occur. They are just used to inform potential investors of the absolute worst case scenario so that they can’t be sued should that 0.000001% chance of it occurring actually happen. Things like the Premier League/Sky may fold, we might lose all our sponsors etc. Nothing whatsoever to get worried about.

Dividend policy. Very good bit of news. No dividends will be payable to holders of A Shares for the foreseeable future. Whilst this is not ‘binding’ in the sense that dividends may be paid in the future at least it shows that the Glazers see the need to retain any profits in the near future for investment in players, and to pay down any debt (if there is any left) after the IPO. However, hidden away in the doc is a sneaky little £10m dividend paid to the Glazers in April of this year.

Use of proceeds. ALL OF THE PROCEEDS WILL BE USED TO PAY DOWN DEBT. WOOP!

Over-allotment option. Once the size of the offering has been clarified and the bookbuild is finished (the order book), the banks may sell additional shares on top of the total amount to be raised to satisfy demand in the secondary market. Essentially -the Glazers will only get any cash after all of the new shares have been sold, and it will be their existing shares that they are selling.

Management/consultancy fees. We paid c.£10m in total to the Glazers for these ‘services’ in the last 12 months. Again not great but not the end of the world. This kind of thing does not go down well at all with investors when the existing principal shareholder pays himself through the premise of ‘consulting’. It certainly wouldn’t be very attractive were it to remain in place but thankfully the plc will dispense with these ‘services’ prior to listing so no more hidden payments made to them.

Cayman Islands incorporation. Means absolutely nothing. No doubt newspaper boards will be full of “they don’t even pay tax in this country, the robbing bastards” and we will ge the Jimmy Carr treatment. Fact of the matter is that we will be paying tax in the US (lower than the UK, but not Jersey low) so we will still be paying tax, just not in this country. Purely for capital gains tax reasons I believe although I am no where near knowledgable enough to confirm (lawyer in our team deals with all that nonsense).

Sorry for the long post. My dad rang me up to ask what was going on with it so assumed there might be others who are curious.

Ronnie is a big game bottler anyway when it comes to penalties.
    Ronnie has missed v Barcelona 2008, v Chelsea 2008, v Bayern 2012.

Valencia is great however, i dont feel he is up to it yet but still i support him for having the history number 7. I not sure whether he requested for it or given to him by the boss. I read on the news it say he requested for it. I hope he will improve more and suit his shirt and be proud for everthing.

I hope Nani do stay. I dont believe he is going for the money as mention by some people. I believe he and Anderson have a big say in our future. I do hope both staying if not i will be pissed by everything!

As for the jersey number, nani has spoken times without number as to how he views 17 as his lucky number and YES tony asked for it. Read that somewhere, i think at manutd.com
Tony asked for it and he was called cos his ‘demand’ was met. *Winks*

    Carrick Jones/New Midefielder/Tunni

    AV7 Kagawa Nani

    Danny/Berba

…Basically, I would like us to try the 4-2-3-1 with Kagawa playing in his best position, and see what we get. I’m sure there will be some interesting observations. Rooney,Welbz,Young,Jones ( played a little) all had a summer tournament so I don’t expect to see them.
Ando’s broken, Fletch is still ill, Evra + Nani also on a break….so we are really short on players.

I expect to see the above 11 plus Ando(?), Macheda,Berbatov, Jones(?) and around 5-7 young kids.

  270. Jeet says:

@daemondada: Do you follow Serie A? I ask because I am curious as to what exactly Juve are up to -they seem to be investing big time in their squad, and don’t seem to mind being a bit of a cunt about it…

  271. Jeet says:

Clint – the only question is “what could we possibly learn in pre-season by playing Scholes-Carrick?”

…or Hernandez as the lone striker…

  272. Udhala says:

Don’t want Jones in the midfield,he’s a CB.Bring someone from the reserves to play there if we aren’t going to buy but please not Jones. Give them a chance.

  273. Panderi says:

    Jeet,

I’ve been asking that “can we find a Fletch replacement from within the current bunch” question myself. I’ve only seen Tunni play once, and he didn’t give me the impression that he’s ready yet. Maybe people who have seen more of him would disagree but I think it would be best for him to go on loan to somewhere like Wigan. Jones on the other hand I believe can do that job fairly well but that said I don’t want to see him shuttled around and converted into another utility player. Plus you can’t expect him to perform consistently well in that role week in week out like Fletch would. So, with Fletch’s situation still as unclear as ever its imperative we sign someone. I would also like us to sort out Jones’ best position out as soon as possible.

  274. Panderi says:

Oh and thanks people for the links/posts about the IPO. Hope some good comes out of it..

  275. markynorbs says:

Bring back, wing backs like the dippers in the 90s. :-) Tony on the right Ashley on the left. Rio Vidia smalling at the back with Carrick sitting in front of them. Kagawa Rooney Nani and Welbeck mixing it up in ATTACK!!
    Now that’s entertainment :-)

  276. Clint-Iamyourpapii says:

    Jeet -

“what could we possibly learn in pre-season by playing Scholes-Carrick?”

    - Not much apart from whether they can play another year together with the same effect.
    - Plus Is Anderson even fit? Is Powell a central midfielder? We’ll find out in his cameo appearances.
    - Doubt SAF will test out a 3-man midfield in pre-season….Jones is centre midfield? Can’t see happening regularly ….plus isn’t he joining up at a later date?

    - Chicha might play the lone striker role, to best show off the ability of Kagawa who loves playing in behind so, perhaps thats the option we’ll opt for.

  277. WeAreUnited says:

    @Wakey

thanks!! I was young when I started supporting United.

It was 98 and after the world cup. I saw beckham playing and I started realizing ManUtd and thought if a player like him plays that good, what about his team, the probably play even better.

so Cantona issues were before me. Now I know about that too. King Eric.

    So thank you!

  278. daemondada says:

@jeet.As I said yesterday Jones CAN deputise for Fletch until his return. It wasn’t that long ago that we were fawning over the lad and calling him the next Duncan Edwards.Remember Big Dunc was also used as a utility player all over the park tho being less than 21.That didn’t stop him being effective.Lets not act like plastics rather let’s prove him worthy by giving him the minutes he so desperately needs in that most energy sapping of positions. He’s bound to make the occasional mistake yet with older heads like Scholesy(last lap probably),Carrick,Giggsy et al to steer him aright, those teething problems should be dey and das between. He sure provides more than just a screen for the back 4 with his ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck and bomb forward quite unlike Henderson.Just ask Rio.And as to what Juve are planning with all those seniors on their roster-European domination on the back of their domestic dominance of course! No substitute for experience.Just ask Pirlo.

  282. Jeet says:

@Ash: For once, I’m delighted that we play on Monday, Aug 20. Most likely I’ll be on vacation with family on the weekend :)

@Clint: Agree about Jones’s role being up in the air – I believe that he could do the Fletch role, but of course I could be wrong.

Disagree about Hernandez as lone frontman. I don’t think he’s much good in that role (and I absolutely adore that kid), and Rooney’s always going to start, and Kagawa so far being the star signing, that can’t be Hernandez’s steady role.

Disagree about the need to find out the longevity of the Carrick_Scholes partnership. In my mind, and assuming Scholes is handled properly, there’s no doubt at all about his ability to turn it on for another season.

The thing is, all of us pretty much agree that 4-2-3-1 is the way to go in Europe. We lacked players who could do a long term job in 2 key roles in that formation – one of the middle 2, and the central figure of the 3. The latter is sorted with Kagawa, or so we’d like to believe. The BIG question we need to figure out is Carrick_’X'? If we don’t buy, who’s X? That, IMO is what we should try and figure out before anything else.

  283. Jeet says:

Good for you then mate. In india the monday night matches starts at 1 am so it becomes very difficult to watch as next day I have to go to college. Anyways I will try my best to watch. Last time when the first match of the season was on monday midnight we won the league . 2 years ago against new castle.

  289. Jeet says:

Ash – I know when the matches start in India, I wonder how?! ;)

…but don’t recall the geordies-at-OT match starting at midnight? I remember that match pretty well – Scholesy put in a masterclass and we won by 3, right?

  290. Legend22 says:

dont worry about him.. chelsea failed with a 32million bid for him, so clearly we have no chance

  291. Legend22 says:

The flyers are advertising 5 pounds for a peep and 10 poundsif you want to go in and join the fun. CLLC being a man of action, a true leader, goes in. Gill says he’s too old for that kinda stuff and peeps. CLLC waits and waits, but there’s nothing in there, except a bleating goat. He waits some more, but he’s getting a boner with the anticipation, and he’s really angry, so he brutally shags the goat. He comes out in a rage, and says, “Come on, we gotta complain! These guys are just conning us!”

David Gill says, “What the fuck are you on about? I just saw you shag a goat for a fiver – that’s what I call value in the market!”

Happy for Antonio Valencia, I also hope we sort out Nani’s contract, if Ferguson played Nani how Bento plays him for Portugal we would be seeing the best out of him. He is more talented than Young and Valencia although Valencia is more consistent. Play Nani in his right position and he can be devastating. I don’t believe that it’s about money when it comes to Nani, its about being able to express himself on the field compared to his Portugal performances.

As for Ronaldo being a big game bottler that is bullshit, scores against Porto and Arsenal in the Champions League for the teams progression. Scores in the final against Chelsea, scores in the copa final to win Real Madrid’s first trophy, has scored in his four games against Barcelona, scored in the Euros to allow Portugal to progress out of the group stages and semi final so much for big game bottler. As for Robin Van Persie saying his club lack ambition it wasn’t long ago Rooney said the very same thimg in fact his was worse as it was only after one season of not winning a single trophy. Robin hasn’t won a trophy in 7 years so I can understand his frustration but I won’t be gloating over Arsenal’s problems because we have our own players who have done the same.

  295. Ash says:

    Jeet

Yeah. And we also saw a berba goal. Great performance by our team. I hope to see the same stuff against everton. Eagerly waiting for the season to start.

Good point about Jones. I think people forget how bad Fletch was when he first started playing. I wouldnt mind seeing Jones in that CMF role next to Carrick. He is a year older and wiser.
Obviously a Martinez or Strootman would be the ideal but as a ‘cheap’ option or even as an option it wouldnt hurt to give him a go.

  299. lordrt says:

how about that lad (sry forgot his name) who we signed from shitty to join the tour? If Berba is not sold then surely he’s on as well

30-35M for Lucas Moura??? SAF is losing the plot or what? for an unknown Brazilian player who pays such money? I would have instead pay about 25M for Martinez or 50M+ and get Neymar :-D

RVP hasn’t done the Arse any favors by going public, reduces his value, can only be doing it because he wants out before the season starts. My guess to City for 20mill and 200k a week

  302. daemondada says:

Robbo,I don’t think we’ll be seeing much of Jones in the CMF cos the pressure on SAF to buy a ‘ready made’ fit is overwhelming.Yet,I’m positive if given the opportunity,Jones will sparkle.

  303. CedarsDevil says:

    wayne

Cheers pal, you just made my day with that post……….The mere thought disgusts the living day lights out of me

  304. Costas says:

One paper said that RVP would join City for as much as 225k per week. That’s why he’s leaving the Arse for City. And that’s why we can’t get him.

  305. Jeet says:

Costas – do we NEED RvP? Given that we aren’t exacly flush with funds, I’d rather we focus…never a fan of the “too good to miss” arguement – a CR7, by definition comes up only once a generation….

  306. wayne says:

Cedars sorry mate just seems the logical outcome probably been tapped up already hence the no ambition line.I always put no ambition and big wages as the same thing. If we believe reports Arse offered 130k per week RVP probably looking for Rooney type of money.Always thought him saying he’ll never go to another prem club was bollocks and by his actions clearly has no loyalty whatsoever to the Arse

  307. CedarsDevil says:

Do we NEED RvP? Is that even a question for debate? Dear God almighty the world has gone bonkers

  308. Ancha says:

Why not we cannot have….someone better than CR7

  309. Costas says:

    @Jeet

No, a striker is not a priority even if Berbatov leaves. There are 2 areas we are still weak at. Full back berths and central midfield. I was just making a point about RVP because it seems like some tabloids want to drag us into a tussle with City for his services. I don’t think we will even bother to be honest. It’s a losing battle.

  310. jeet says:

    Costas – I agree

  313. Jeet says:

A question for you – do you think that signing a strong DM would greatly boost Evra’s return to form?

Let me explain, Evra’s biggest folly has been that he is too narrow, or he isn’t tracking back. Now, an enregetic defensive midfielder knows that its his job to cover the bombing fullback should a counter happen. I’ve seen Evra time and again being sucked in to cover the vacant space between midfield and defence, leaving the winger free. Just wondering, is it a mere coincidence that Evra’s drop in form has synced with Fletch’s drop in form, and subsequent absence?

  314. kanchelskis says:

    @Jeet

I kind of see your point. But Evra’s problems run deeper than those described. The last couple of seasons have also seen him get skinned countless times, even when in a perfectly good position, and also demonstrate poor defensive decision-making, againt even when in a good position.

For me Fletcher’s absence would be only a kind way of explaining half the problem.

  315. Jeet says:

Kanchelskis – and here I was trying to be charitable to our captain…

…you are probably right too, more’s the pity

  316. wayne says:

Just have to say one thing and its not to piss Zibbie off but Utd gave Rooney extra holidays and he’s spending it partying every night, first it was the vodka party with the rappers, then getting drunk with Piers Morgan now last night partying at a nightclub with Chris Brown without his wife.So the first week of his holiday has been a drunk, just doesn’t show him or the club in a good light imo

    Manchester United: own goal

The Glazer family wants your cash, but the owners of Manchester United have a curious way of showing their gratitude. Investors in the latest iteration of the football club’s initial public offering will receive shares that have only a tenth of the voting power of family-held shares. The IPO is headed for the New York Stock Exchange, after the family spurned London and called off a listing in Singapore. A preliminary prospectus with a nominal $100m offer size has been filed.
    More video

The family’s desperation to raise cash and keep control can be seen in the contortions imposed on Manchester United to get the IPO away. There is the ownership in the Cayman Islands (twinned with Salford, not). There is the rebranding as an “emerging growth company”, which will amuse fans of a club founded in 1878 (and allows for limited financial reporting for up to five years). And there is the voting structure. Still, none of that should deter what the prospectus calls the club’s “global community of 659m followers” (hello the Stretford End).

Operationally, Manchester United looks in reasonable shape: revenue in the nine months to the end of March was 6 per cent up on a year ago at £245m, and operating profit nearly trebled to £38m. But the finances of English Premier League clubs are precarious, including a wage-to-revenue ratio of 70 per cent against 53 per cent in the German Bundesliga, according to Deloitte. And it is as well to be sceptical about celebrity IPOs. Formula One and Graff Diamonds cancelled theirs in the last few weeks.

Even allowing for its £425m of net debt – 3.9 times 2011 earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation – there is value in Manchester United. It is one of the world’s most successful sports clubs. Its proposed listing conditions suggest, though, that the Glazers intend to keep it all for themselves.

  324. mattbw7 says:

I wasn’t talking to you but hey don’t let facts get in the way of what you want to believe.

  325. Balaji Sivaraman says:

Jeet, I think you are definitely highlighting part of Evra’s problem as kanchelskis pointed out. I think one of my biggest complaints against him last season was that he was caught inside far too often which allowed the opposition wingers free rein on the flanks. This problem is definitely explained by the absence of a Fletch-type of player. If we had somebody doing all the dirty work inside, then Evra wouldn’t have to overcompensate by coming inside.

I think a bigger problem has been that he has certainly been overplayed in the past couple of seasons. Despite being a professional footballer, the fatigue must be wearing him thin physically. The biggest problem has been the mental one. First the France fiasco at the world cup. Then the loss of a family member. Then the whole issue with the fucking bucktoothed asshole racist (*placeholder for imaginative synonyms for the word cunt*). I mean, we can say all we want, but it must be wearing a player thin both physically and mentally.

That still doesn’t explain him going missing positionally as Kanchelskis pointed out, but we got to cut him some slack here. Life has certainly fucked him over in footballing terms in the past year. I think he’ll be back to the best he can be at this age next season.

  326. daemondada says:

Well for my take on Evra,I’ll say he suffers frm ‘overconfidence’ if there be such a term. Most times he just doesn’t demonstrate that ‘professional panic’ required of an astute defender that keeps him on his toes.A great defender has to be aware at the back of his mind that no matter how good he is,he can be ‘skinned’ by even the lowliest of opponents on occasion.Evra’s bragadaccio, tho one of his greatest strengths offensively,is his Achilles heel constituency-wise.I like my defenders putting on that ‘Oh my God I’m in deep shit with the mouth agape’ look so akin to Evans whenever they have attackers charging at them.Makes me feel so comfy as they show appreciation for the seriousness of the situation. If you can’t score then don’t give away is the rule in my book.

  327. Zibbie says:

    Hello RoM
@Perry thanks man. Before the banking melt down some 3 months. Lads on Fox Soccer spoke of the melt down. I pulled my stock’s out and bought gold. This is what has saved my ass during all this surgery’s and shit.

  328. samuel - united WE stand says:

Couple of swashbuckling runs through the middle does not make jones a central midfielder. He did a job there last season because of the astronomical injuries united had, time he returns to the area he supposedly is equipped for.

One of Fergie’s challenges will be to find a definite position for jones. For phil’s sake, he needs to excel in one position and fight for that position. He was bought as a centre back and yet has only played a couple of games there, he’s still admittedly raw and needs to continuously improve. Jack of all trades may garner enough appearances (O’shea) but they’ll never be certain first team starters. I hope jones fulfills his potential, at centre back because you simply require a whole different skill to play in central midfield. charging around with no tactical awareness, no passing ability e.t.c will see a player exposed in that position. FERGIE should promote younger midfielders and buy, enough with sticking players in unnatural positions on the pitch.

  329. Zibbie says:

Nice Sean Goss, SAF signs young one’s all the time.

  339. kanchelskis says:

    @Balaji

Yeh. Sounds to me like it’s a very small step in the right direction.

Interesting hypothesis that it’s the first steps for preparing for life after Fergie. But frustrating implication that we have to wait for him to retire to get a war chest! If we could get the big transfer kitty while he was still here, we’d be in a position to hunt another treble, or at least a double.

My big buddie a fellow defensive tackle said I did not understand they were ranked 1st in the state we were 8th, and they were so good and blah blah I yelled fuck that they should worry about me and you Joe and Thunder and Lighting our great running backs, and Lash busting their heads open and in 2 mints on the ride to the field we levitated off the buss and beat them bad something like 35-14. Belief is earned through preparing ourselves to be successful. We that day understood we EARNED the right to succeed. Working out in the off season, playing the same system as freshmen to senior year. Film work, game plans, ect.. SAF and Man Unt expect success and have earned it through time.

  350. Zibbie says:

way off I never said or ment RVP to Man Utd just made a comparison.

  351. Zibbie says:

No next year Dan is 20, slow down

  352. Zibbie says:

All Youngstown a year older and bolder.

  353. kanchelskis says:

    @Zibbie

Sorry – my bad. Thought you were envisioning a situation in which RVP and Rooney were both playing for us.

  354. Zibbie says:

@kanchelskis sometimes my glass is half filled of Gin… hehe

  355. Zibbie says:

Understood, my typing/ English writing skills are way behind many here. I type in concepts and thought and ideas. Well the RVP to Man Utd talk, just that talk. SAF can pull a monkey out the ass though. Sounds like one close 2-3 in the mist. He always gets good kids imo. The young Spanish keeper duel purpose a friend for DDG and he is good. Sean Goss no clue, he will grow in the Academy if not into 1st team MUFC type as good as he can be and win a chance else where.

  356. Joffrey Baratheon says:

Why no mention of Becks wearing it as well Scott? You’ve always had a bit of resentment towards him I remember like some United fans do and personally I don’t understand it. No one can underestimate Beckham’s huge contribution to our success and sadly a lot of people seem to forget how good he was because of the media circus that surrounds him. I’m happy for Valencia, hopefully it will inspire him to contiue the great form he’s shown through out pretty much his whole United career.

  357. Wakey says:

    @Costas

That daily mail article is an awful read. Even by their standards the journalism is awful. Most of the other media outlets are atleast trying to hide the fact they  are being sensationalist but the Daily Mail actually quotes the document which actually says the debt ‘Could’ rather than ‘Does’  damage yet still write an article around it which isn’t far from  painting a picture that the clubs about to go the way of way of Rangers

    @Robbo
The 1bn was the amount they were looking for from the Asian float. It’s possible they may go nfor that amount but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a smaller scale float to tide them over while they wait for the Asian markets to stabilise as that market is probably better for floating this kind of business. What they won’t want to be doing is what Hicks/Gillette at Liverpool where they left each ‘refinancing’ deal so late it left them with no options so even a partial reduction in the debt now will give them 5 years before the bonds mature for the Asian markets to rebound or if they don’t I will make refinancing the remaining debt easier and at much better terms.

    @Ash
We will know when it formally launches which will be within 90 days.

    @Marq
People always seem to hold Barca and Real up as examples of fan ownership but they actually highlight the problems of fan ownership. Everything becomes about winning over the fans and the easiest way to do this is spending silly money on players. Every presidential election at these clubs becomes about promising as many star names as they can to win and then financially they have to drive the club int he ground to fulfil the promises.

    @Jeet
I will tell you what Juve are upto. They are trying to take the piss out of FFP regulations more that City are.  None of the Italian clubs are anywhere near meeting the regulations and Juve are one of the worst offenders yet while they should be cutting back they are spending more and more

    @lordrt
Lucas Moura is hardly an unknown Brazilian. He is one of the Brightest prospects in Brazilian football who has been being raved about for a couple of years now. He has already made his full international debut and if Brazil were playing more international games at the moment would no doubt have played more (as they don’t have to qualify for the next world cup they haven’t been playing many games, hence their slide down the FIFA rankings)

Admittedly it’s hard to judge Brazilians as they get hyped up while in Brazil but often the hype turns out to be unwarranted when they move to europe.

    @wayne
So what if he is partying. It’s his time off and mental fatigue is as much a killer as physical fatigue so having some fun and enjoying himself is perfectly fine.

    @mattbw7
Was that really from the FT and its not some piss take? Surprised the FT would publish such a sarcastic article or one that belittles a company based on the bad management of its ‘competitiveness’ (They use the 70% figure for wage/revenue ratio of the PL while using Germany’s figure to suggest United is badly run when infact United figure is not only below the German average but better than all the German clubs)

  358. kanchelskis says:

    @Zibbie

I mentioned this earlier … the young Spanish keeper was an elaborate hoax. The guy doesn’t exist!

  359. Zibbie says:

I see a real good team for Man Utd next season, I love Kagawa. Him TC23 with 12 Giggs games and Powell getting a look Rooney wont be depended on to be a mf link not a strength of his. Along with the other lads he can rotate back and link with his 40 cross field pass opening virgin defensive ass. Along with 1,2 touch fast break rippen dfence open!!!!!!!!!

  360. Zibbie says:

    Thanks I luv RoM.

  361. Zibbie says:

I love the self imposed wage % of MUFC . As revs grow so do the players wages. Perfect.

  362. fergie is the boss says:

Zibbie – the team is still missing that one piece in midfield to bring it all together. Powell cannot be rushed into the team. Carrick I still feel does suffer from wear and tear, and I do not want scholes and giggs playing 40 games this season. I do believe now the boss will invest in a midfielder, modric is out of united’s price range, a moutinho would be a smart bit of business. His experience, he is stronger, great at keeping the ball. Our current options are still not enough

  363. wayne says:

Wakey Chris Brown is a x felon a woman beater and a trouble causer only a few weeks ago him and his crew got into bother with another Rap crew and trashed a night club
Not reading about any other Utd player on a weeks bender don’t agree with it,you think its ok fine didn’t I put IMO

  364. Zibbie says:

Have over the years my disgust at Man Utd for not getting TOP TOP players when available, puzzeled, frustrated, freak me the fuck out, from Robben on, then education set in. A true look at SAF past 25 years in looking at the facts posted by people here. All good in the MUFC transfer hood. A big Star every 4 to 6 years and many made stars along the way. Academy or developed like CR7 and Rooney. Last year 50 million and could have been 70 million. He spends bigger every 3 to 5 years and maintains in the tween years. In 25 years is this his 5th team to compete with a family toy who have assets of almost ONE TRILLION DOLLARS!!! Great fun for me, and UUUUUUU 222222!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  365. Zibbie says:

FITB I get that, Fletch was / is him. Hard to find guys like Fletch, SAF is looking, can’t always get what U want. SAF seems to get what he needs. 19!

    19 be well man.

  366. daemondada says:

@matt7bw.No need to get uptight with Cedars. He was only pulling ur legs. Why is there so much abrasiveness on RoM nowadays.I know we ended the season potless still…Anyways, methinks that any second guessing of the clubs purposes in it’s dealings financial or otherwise is a DIRECT AFFRONT on SAF’s untouchableness and integrity. If there is any shady/conspiratorial goings on at the club,I’m of the firm belief that our knight would not keep us in the dark.Of course once its business as usual,he is not obliged to open up the innards of our club for public perusal. No big club does this.Unless,of course,SAF has ‘lost it’ as so many doomsday prophets on here claim.

  367. Wakey says:

    @Balaji & kanchelskis

Personally I don’t see why people hold Andy Green in such high regard on these issues. Yes he knows his stuff but when it comes to United his judgement is skewed.

After all it was his data that formed the core of the BBC program on the Glazers, you all know the one I’m talking about. The one that had so little to sensationalise about the Glazers that they had to resort to childish segments involving gnomes and even then the facts they presented largely left out half the story to make things seem worse. It was a hack piece funded by MUST and the Red Knights as part of the propaganda at the times yet people seem to forget that.

Even in todays blog he rolls out the typical MUST propaganda line about Fan Ownership such as that in Spain when anyone who looks at Spain’s setup properly can see its a hindrance rather than a help and only ends up working because of help from the Spanish Royal Family, The National government, the local government and the Spanish Banks (who the other 3 parties pretty much force them to do)

  368. Zibbie says:

Wayne is so spot on and is one of many MUFC sens i here. Sir Gile, KE ect.
A good teammate / pro modern player.
    Obvious example TV7 vs Bollitelli
Humbled by poverty, thankful for Man Utd and SAF VS petulant child muti-millionaire panty waste. Cunt discharge.

  369. fergie is the boss says:

Zibbie – and it cost united big time last year during the last month of the season, my worry is? like Costas said, if carrick gets injured I would be worried, on who will fill his role, because anderson fletcher and cleverly do not seem to be fully fit for the season ahead. And Kagwa I think is better suited playing off rooney

  370. Zibbie says:

Does my but pucker at the fuckers at $hity, sure. In a way the last Lio team that raised the bar tuned into a team with 4 PL titles 1 CL title and 2 more simis. So his last team excite’s me to no end. And if he buys a big star every 4-6 years that means Berba was the last one…. WHO IS THE NEXT!!!!!!

  371. Marq says:

The only reason RvP is linked to us is because we fit the bill of his excuse by being above Arsenal in the table, and by doing so, they can squeeze another £5-10m out of City

  372. Zibbie says:

If I had $hity $ and a magic wound, the next Vida, The Next Robbo, The next Messi The next Schmikle and a cloned Maldini

  373. Zibbie says:

A Hybreed Of Cafu and Carlos.

  374. Zibbie says:

Kagawa imo will make half of a classic combo with Wazza. Wazza is the Bruce Lee of the PL. CR7 he played on the left in a 4-3-3 or 4-6 rotating with ease. Before that at 17-18 speed and fury running the left side.. Post CR& lone striker to last year floating. Now he is entering his prime a new adventure for SAF to find where Wazza fits the best to get the best from the rest. TC23 to play 30+ games add Kagawa and Giggs 12 – 15 games Young has now played not just a PL season with Welbeck and Rooney in a different set up with England. I get Carrick has been a stable factor, so Carrick, Scholes, Andy, TC23,Jones and Tunni for a good look. And Perucci, Cole, Powell and Lingard to get a good look as well. Window open till Sept 1st. a long long long time.

  375. Balaji Sivaraman says:

Wakey, In terms of financial issues and breaking out the IPO, I think Andy Green does a great job. But that doesn’t necessarily mean I agree with all of his points.

I definitely don’t think a fan-owned model is the way to go. In fact, I completely disagree with him on that. A fan-owned model is basically dooming yourself to disaster. People think fans can do a great job. But fans will always think as fans and not as businessmen. Believe it or not, football is a business and fans will completely fuck up United faster than the Glazers ever could.

I also am not completely anti-Glazer and pro-MUST like Andy. While I obviously don’t like the Glazers using United’s resources to clear their debt, I think they are the best people to be in-charge of a debt free United. I’d rather have us in the hands of those Yanks than a sugar-daddy Arab. I like their aggressive marketing style even though people say that they’ve had to do it because they need the cash. I like the fact that they haven’t interfered with football. Again, people say it is because we’ve been under Sir Alex, which is partly true. But I don’t think they’re really bothered about our on-field activities as long as we keep on winning. I think those are definite positives.

I think he can explains in clear and concise points all the financial jargon which some people find really difficult to comprehend. And I like his breakdown of the quarterly results as well. Basically, I read wherever I can and take my own call on what to make of the whole issue.

  376. parryheid says:

What I don’t want is that never ending fucking rotation it really gets on my tits.

  378. Zibbie says:

Balaji, Man Utd’s growth in India is awesome and a big key with China and all of Asia. 200,000,000 million more middle class consumers filling Idle time and rooting for Man Utd. and all that comes with it. Man Utd will be the first or one of the first sporting clubs to call themselves a media company. Big Big Entertainment business. That clip of Wazza with his AON kit bike shin kick to beat $hity is worth $200 mill in advertising. NASCAR has broken it down to add time when seen on TV and see hot babe with Sprint car suits in background shots!
Man Utd has an awesome future as a company. More then doubling in worth in some 7 years. What is next the 1st 5 billion club, the 1st 10 billion club……….

  379. Clint-Iamyourpapii says:

Gylfi Sigurdsson rejected Liverpool….club with a huge history, a good manager that had managed him before and a club with has some of the best fans in the world  In favour of Spurs, a team with Ambition looking to break into the Top 4 again.

 This was not a financial move but

Oh Liverpool….how they dropped off since the “Facts” rant is astonishing. They wanted the man (Benitez) responsible for their demise back aswell in an official vote .
    What Idiots !

  380. Zibbie says:

  381. Zibbie says:

  382. Zibbie says:

Balaji, when I see your name I think of Baja Mexico in the 80′s now after Old Traford Ireland and Italy, India calls to me.

  383. Cyril Sneer says:

Zibbie – thanks very much :) If Nascar is really abotu hot babes in Sprint suits I might have to start watching. All i know about it comes from Talladega Nights. If ya ain’t first, you’re last.

  384. TonyBee says:

there must be a part three……..

  385. Zibbie says:

I grew up an open wheel fan, they fucked up Indy Car. NASCAR well promoted and well done. I guess here in the US racing is the largest attended sporting event. Every county has a race track 99 counties in Iowa. In the US the car Rules, In Europe Liverpool and Manchester 30 miles apart. Here Chicago hundred’s of miles to St. Louis. The a sexual revolution was kicked of by the Model T then Birth Control and Bikinis.

  386. Cyril Sneer says:

    TonyBee – Thanks mate. I don’t get first look, there’s competition :)
I thought we agreed you get first chance with Cheryl (cuz yu’re werth it)? Definitely a part 3, probably part 4 and most likely a part 5…

  387. Balaji Sivaraman says:

Zibster, You’re always welcome in India mate. :D

And yeah, the Asian markets are ripe for United to tap into. We’ll see but they’ve already set up a lot of stores all over India in all major cities. It’s definitely a start and there’s surely more to come.

  388. Zibbie says:

I see the gang here on RoM of true Reds

  389. FletchTHEMAN says:

Anyone want to discuss Goal line technology GLT?

FIFA has just announced the approval of a chip and approved a system. THis is about time, I am sure. But it is amazing the number of lads who think it will destroy their beautiful game. B*lls says I. They also need video refs at all EPL and major competition matches in my view:

‪GLT‬ will only help with Ball Over Goal decisions. And it might eliminate that pathetic figure of the goal line 5th official.

But GLT will not solve a host of common everyday ills that would benefit from a video ref system. These include well recognized issues with:
Diving, handball, penalties, offsides, GoalKicks, corners, last-man-rule, abusive language, the list is long.

I hope I live to see the day when we get something don’t in this area. For instance, each coach, could be allowed to question 1 calls per game, and the video ref could be allowed the same same power if he catches something that every TV viewer also sees. If they added that these reviews could only take place in deadball situations, then very little would arrise to unduly delay our “beautiful” game.

  390. Zibbie says:

I take that imagery with me though this day, thanks.

  391. Zibbie says:

    Go GLT!

The Trafford Centre sucks huge fucking COCK!!!!!

  399. TonyBee says:

Mike…. got her number …. this Miss Trafford Centre….might have a job for her….

  400. Balaji Sivaraman says:

FletchTheMan, I completely agree mate. This game has been living in the dark ages for far too long and a change is needed. It is clear that with dunces like Blatter and Platini at the head, two people who couldn’t be more out-of-touch with technology and advancements in the world, we’re going to head nowhere.

This is definitely a start. I think the NHL has an amazing system where a buzzer automatically buzzes when the puck crosses the line for the goal. Football requires something like that. I read up on the two technologies and GoalRef is similar to the NHL system whereas Hawk-Eye is something like what’s used in Cricket and Tennis. Both are fine for the purpose. GLT is a must. Those kinds of decisions are going to happen once in a season or something like that but they’re going to be championship deciding like the Liverpool-Chelsea fiasco in 2005. It is not going to stop the match longer than a discussion with the fifth official would.

In fact, it was Annie Eaves who said a long time ago that the time it takes the on-field referee to walk over and discuss with the linesman about what happened and make a decision is much longer than what it would take the fourth official to arrive at a similar decision. And the technological decision is going to more precise than another human eye ever could be.

I also second Fletch’s suggestion of referrals. I’ve been discussing the same with my mates for a long time. Tennis has a referral system. Since you’re not guaranteed to use it, it is not going to stop play all the time. But in situations like the Drogba offside which decided the course of the title, we could’ve referred and that’s it, one more title for us and 4 on the trot. And it is not going to stop a lot of play as well.

And these stoppages aren’t going to stop the play any more than some dickhead rolling on the floor like he’s been shot through the heart. The latter event has become commonplace in football and every other match has multiple stoppages because of that. So, how’s stopping play for a game/title changing decision any different?

I believe the same problem is happening in Cricket right now with the Indian Board’s staunch refusal to approve the Referral system. These people are so used to living in the dark ages that they don’t want to open their eyes and see how useful technology can be in mitigating a lot of the common mistakes that occur in sport. Of course, referees/umpires are still going to have complete control over the technology but they’re too fucking backward minded to realize that and it is ruining the sports we love at the moment.

  401. TonyBee says:

looking at theM pics Cyril…even our Cheryl is feeling the ravages of time….starting to look her REAL age……

  402. TonyBee says:

Balaji Sivaraman ….. Perhaps it could be used to differentiate between a foul and a dive….. bringing more honesty back into the game….saw so much blatant diving in this years euro champs….. players were even going down feigning being hurt…..

  403. TonyBee says:

    fucking doubt it though

    Self-esteem issues….

  412. ididnotzeeit says:

matt and lukes younger brother or jeremy’s son whos heard of the young lad we signed from exeter today

  414. FletchTHEMAN says:

@Balaji Cheers son. Fully agree. I can understand the resistance as the cost is high and will instantaniously make lower leagues look “unprofessional” since they won’t have access. But that will add the ambiance of the lower league matches as well, with dads able to take their kids to both types of game.

There is just to much at stack in the higher levels of the game. Things like Henry’s hand ball v Ireland can’t stand, just as the decisions that ultimately send one team down to a lower league.

  415. Cyril Sneer says:

Cedars can have Beyonce-lite on the far right. She looks like she knows how to give orders…

Say it ain’t so Ji! :(

  417. CedarsDevil says:

  419. keano99 says:

Qpr said today they are talking to park they have offered 2 million?

  436. Denton Davey says:

Balaji @ 19:09: “And these stoppages aren’t going to stop the play any more than some dickhead rolling on the floor like he’s been shot through the heart. ”

Not to mention all the time-wasting for goal “celebrations”, pass-backs to the keeper, throw-ins, and TheRentBoyz’ special-trick of surrounding/nattering with the ref. I’d guess that there’s something on the order of fifteen minutes of game-time that are “wasted” because the ball is not in play.

Somehow, these “stoppages” are considered to be normal whereas checking a key referee’s decision is not. Amazing, eh ?

  437. Mikekelly12 says:

Back from the hell whole that is the Trafford Centre!! Tony Bee, I couldn’t find her but Mr Trafford Centre shafted me right up the ass!! Charged me for the pleasure too!!
Cedars – got my punt down me! A bat in your gaff?? Some strange shit happens to you pal…haha!

Alright, I’m not trying to start any shit here and lord knows it pains me to slag our own players off BUT someone needs to call them out when they do shit like this. So we know we have Cleverley and his ridiculous “brand” and then there’s Rooney out on the piss with his wanker friends in America – I can just about stomach that. It saddens me to report that another of our own seems to have acquired a taste for the showbiz life. That player is none other than Antonio Valencia. It seems that inheriting the famed #7 shirt has gone straight to Tony’s head, judging by this pic he just posted on his Twitter…

    @FletchTHEMAN

I’m not that in favour of Technology in sport tbh as it often destroys the flow. Even in Tennis with Hawk Eye it causes a disruption and changes the flow at times (especially if it’s a serve in question) and tennis is a sport that atleast has natural breaks where as Football often doesn’t. TBH with tennis many of the players seem to challenge not because they think the calls wrong but as a tactical thing to disrupt their opponents play. At the Aussie open this year the Men only got 29% of challenges right and the women 37%  which are awful figures. In the men’s game Federer who hates Hawk eye had the best with 38% but many were in the low teens

GLT if the almost Instant notification silently to the ref is correct is perhaps acceptable but anything more would just be wrong. Sure at times some of these decisions do lead to a break in play but just as often they don’t. Also just look at how long pundits spend looking at a million replays of many incidents from man angles at many speeds and they still can’t decide between them.

As for the Officials behind the goals I do think at times they get a bad rep, the linesmen have viable flags which show them doing their job but the ones behind the goal don’t have that and many of their decisions go unnoticed. Mind you they do seem to bottle it on big decisions but I have read that apparently they often feel under pressure not to make the ref look bad and sometimes are even instructed by the ref on when they should get involved so perhaps it’s not all their fault. Perhaps we need match officials just to be less protected and willing to own up to mistakes (personally I think the ref should have to do an interview after every game to explain himself. If he has made a mistake then they should be allowed to hold their hands up and say so. Everyone would respect them more then) and also willing to work as a unit more rather than the linesmen and officials behind the goal being ‘yes men’ to the ref as often happens.

My next bet, 200 quid that some daft ref error can be credited for incorrect postion of one of the EPL teams in final table. Whatcha bet I don’t get better than even odds.

Anyway, there must be some way to improve things.

I am all for goal line technology. Imagine the title being decided on the final day of the season and one team being awarded a crucial goal when the ball never crossed the line. People talk about the human error element being taken out of the equation. Well referees will still be allowed to make mistake, but when you have a 5th official and a linesman turning a blind eye on a perfectly legal goal Ukraine scored against England, that’s not just a human error. That’s borderline conspiracy. We will see how long it will disrupt each game for. Hopefully the 4th official will be next to a monitor at all times.

No problem with players having a social life as long as their performance isn’t effected. Its not like Wazza’s out drinking Old English in Yonkers with the Ruff Ryders, he’s with his wife and those R&B artists are all sweet hearts anyway. As long as he’s not wearing pink hot pants like Andy Carroll he’s all right in my book haha. For what its worth at least Rooney ain’t hanging around anyone called Aubrey as that would be worrying.

RVP has a cheek talking about ambition when his greatest ambition at Arsenal has been getting off the op table. Wenger 100% made him who he is so by rights he should be ensuring Wenger gets a decent price. Guess thats too much to ask for a lot of players these days.

Valencia sounds like he means business this season. He’s hard as nails on the pitch but you can’t put a price on his humble attitude. All the talent in the world really doesn’t matter if your a self centred twat.

  462. The team that wouldn't die says:

I’m a bit scared SAF will get RVP just to piss off Juventus (Pogba) and City (no explanation needed).
IMHO he’s not that good and will proably never have a season like that again. I think Berba, if played would be as good and score 20 + every season.
His statement was arrogant to say the least. We’ve had too much glass and porcelain in the team. Maybe it’s a smoke screen while we complete the deal of a proper midfielder? TC23 or not. We need that now that Fletch is not back for the start of the season.

Better still, imagine Busquets starts rolling on the floor again during the El Classico, only to get hauled up by the ref of all people and booked! That would be a funny sight, and dare anyone go down like a worm after that!

    ###

    NBI red onion,

Nope i dont think its time to yell at Glazers again..

Paul fucking pogba is demanding a salary of established youth players such as welbeck and tom c..

do u think he deserves it? not in my book, not any young player who hasnt played enough, thats why they are called as academy players, right from school days we take care of them and if they are willing to join other clubs irrespective of Sir Alex asking them to stay, tells me a different story..

    ###

a player who has played less than 5 PL games demands 25 to 30 k a week? not possible in our pay structure..

and regarding Fryers, i dont know why we let him run the transfer…may be we thinking he aint good enough? i doubt that as well coz 6 months ago he was in first team..

so i m confused about Zeki..

    cheers

  491. dela says:

    @Sandeep, NBI

Pogba’s deal at Juventus pays him 20k a week. The source is goal.com, so there is every possibility some bored guy just made that figure up, but even so, if it is true and we aren’t willing to pay a player who oozes potential even 20k, there is something seriously wrong withthe club.

That said, I still think Pogba is a mercenary twunt.

  495. Marq says:

    @NBI & Dela

It is not about not giving them the money, it is about them earning it. I don’t think the club has an issue giving them that amount, what it shows is that they want the money before proving it, that is the kind of mentality that we don’t want. Like Sir Alex said before, the money will come once you prove yourself. Just ask Hernandez. I don’t remember Ronaldo asking for more too.

Morning my love, err I mean my friend!! ha ha Seriously though, I cannot see Sir Alex going for another striker,…..In fact I cannot see us making any more signings

  499. Costas says:

To dela’s point, I remember reading that Fryers will also get around 20k per week at Tottenham. That sounds like a lot of money. If we were still in 1992. But a club with United’s financial means shouldn’t be losing talented youngsters because we can’t pay them that much. If that’s the reason of course. Another explanation could be that these 2 players wanted to play more football. In the last couple of years, CM and LB are the 2 positions in our team where youth has very rarely gotten a chance…

    @Zibbie

Regarding Rafael, I just hope he makes it back in one piece. I don’t like how he, Tom and DDG are starting off their season so early.

Another youth player leaving. Not at all a good sign. I don’t know what are they thinking by leaving united and joining Spurs and west ham(No direspect to both club but they are no match to manchester united)

  501. Utd4life says:

RVP to Utd?? It ain’t gonna happen and I don’t want it to happen because we are well covered in the striker department. We would have been better off if Will Keane had not been injured. On the other hand, it would have been a different story if the Gaffer was on the verge of buying another midfielder.

  502. CedarsDevil says:

People make too much of an issue about young players leaving………..It happens all the time, we are a frigging production line for fucks sake……..Only the elite get to make it at senior level, just like getting your wife pregnant, only the top sperm hits the spot

    Costas,

    Morning buddy,

yup hope the lads will not suffer any injury..

    ###

    Harish,

i think many of us fans are going over the board in losing the youth players..

    kind of,

Pogba was and is a twat,

Morisson – rebel, Sir Alex even went to release him from Jail, if he had even one bit of respect he would have been a different lad after that, but that is not the story..

Zeki – yup kinda surprised if he left us because he along with 3 or 4 players are with us from schoold days..

2 out of 3 youth who left are not our mistake, one was wanted more money in the name of fake playing time and the other had behaviour problems..

so i m not going to lose any sleep on this..

    good day mate..

Not really, just puzzles me how some fans get all anxious when we lose or sell a young player……Fryers?? How many times have we seen him in a senior shirt, once against leeds in the Carling cup? Any more?? If he wants to piss off than good luck to the lad I could not give a flying fuck

  506. Panderi says:

    Morning Reds,

So Zeki Fryers is most likely leaving then? Which now surely means we’ll sign Baines ? I can understand the Ravel and Pogba departures but can’t really make anythig of this, unless the club think he’s not good enough.. Spurs ready to pay him 20k a week so the 1.5k a week offer that we supposedly made surely can’t be true ?

  507. samuel - united WE stand says:

Fryers has done nothing to suggest he should be demanding such ridiculous wages. 20,000?, who on earth does he think he is? roberto carlos?. He’s no where near starting for the first team, couple of sporadic appearances don’t suddenly shoot him towards stardom. He’s clearly believed his own hype even though i’m baffled as to where it came from as he has only looked alright in the few appearances, not prepared to prove he’s capable of producing at a club like united. If he joins spurs then it would be for stupid money to jeopardise his career.

On another note, goal.com is about as reliable as a cow’s dung being used as a form of petrol in a car, the daily-fail editors eyes must be lit as they have the opportunity print negativity. The usual “Fryers leaving, major blow to united’s aspirations” will be rolled out.

  508. Sandeep1878 says:

    Cedars and Panderi,

    right pals,

if he wants a move on, let him..

fact that we have made him run his contract means we dont think he is gonna make it big with us..

  509. samuel - united WE stand says:

If it was up to me, i would pay the younger players far lesser wages. 20,000? what’s he going to do with that? buy some bling ching a ling? squander it on ‘partays’?. Players not prepared to knuckle down anymore, badly advised by their agents that they’re diamonds when in reality hey’re no where near. Morrison, pogba.. Who’d have thought united harbored some true cunts in the youth system. future was supposedly bright, they apparently were gonna take over but it shows that mentality is a huge part of football and without a good one, potential will probably fail to materialise. A lot of players lack a good mentality. Irrelevant nonsense is the forefront of football these days.

  510. Costas says:

    @Sandeep

Hi mate. There’s always going to be an excuse why a youngster left. Morrison was a troublemaker but we only figured that one out in the last year of his contract. Pogba had no respect for us but we only figured that out in the last year of his contract. Norwood and Fryers? They didn’t want to stay at the club and wait until Scholes and Evra turned 50 and retired. Fuck them.

Sorry but I can’t buy the logic that young players started thinking with their pockets in 2012. The last class of youngsters that probably put the privilege of playing for United first and foremost graduated 20 years ago. Ever since, in order for a young player to commit long term to United, wages as well as opportunity play a role. And that’s how we got Pogba from Le Havre. But when the shoe is on the other foot, it’s somehow the player’s fault…

  511. parryheid says:

20k a week is a lot of money for an unproven player but what they are afraid of is
breaking into the first team and playing alongside the best played players and only
earning a fraction of their wages. They should be happy with 5k-10k a week but
have an annual review to bring their wages inline with their role in the team.

  517. samuel - united WE stand says:

Wages for what?. What have pogba, fryers, morrison proven to even demand such salaries?. They’re potential and with potential, it harbors between fulfilling it and abject failure due to poor mentalit, these players willing to throw all the efforts put into them in order to be gradually eased into the team.

Norwood went to coventry and looked decent, nothing more. I’d have ate a house if he would ever had made it here. The club offered him a year deal, willing to take that little gamble but he lacked the belief in his ability and had no patience like many.

We snatched pogba from Le havre. Maybe united are tasting their very own medicine regarding that one but you’d think he valued his career. Moving to juventus with perhaps a higher wages but with no chance for a first team place (pirlo, marchisio, mauricio isla, kwadwo asamoah e.t.c). Badly advised by an agent.

Morrison was always a thug, never truly blessed with the intelligence that his talent needed.

If players are willing to leave for the quick bucks then there’s nothing FERGIE or the club can do. They shall not be held to ransom by unproven fuckers.

Yes younger players should be given opportunities and FERGIE does give it. A younger player simply has to bide time and wait to grasp it and then prove to have the hunger to play. If FERGIE doesn’t see anything in you to show you’d offer more than a veteran scholes then get your fucking ass to training and show it, nothing comes easy. Primadonnas, pathetic!

As for youngsters leaving, I am not going to break up my head over it. There’s a structure at the club that I believe in. For whatever reason, these guys are leaving, more money, more playing time or whatever they choose to spin on it. Now if somebody like Tunnicliffe leaves, then I might start to look up and see that there’s a real problem. But I know I won’t have to worry about that stuff for now.

For those that want to leave, united also burgeoning talent in the youth willing to do anything to play for united (Larnell cole, tunnicliffe, lingard, will and michael keane and many more) also add davide petrucci whom i feel has the talent to step up this season, i hope he’ll amongst the pre-season squad in order to showcase his capabilities. United can’t keep them all, well.. can’t keep the morons that can’t visualise what’s in front of them anyway. The club has a policy of not laying down for unproven players demanding ridiculous wages per week and rightly so. It’s a different ball game when it comes to a proven top players asking for salaries to match their contributions.

  524. Costas says:

A similar developing situation will be Welbeck’s contract extension. He’s into the last 12 months of his current contract now and I have a feeling it will be another rollercoaster until he puts pen to paper. I still don’t understand why we don’t tie down these players sooner. As time will go on, Welbeck will have more bargaining power in his hands. But hey, if he doesn’t appreciate playing for United, fuck him too. ;)

  525. prasan_UTDfan4life says:

As for the topic, absolutely love our Tony V or AV7, so to put it. Perfect for the no. 7 shirt and lets hope this season he up’s his game even more and gives his best season till date in a United shirt. Apart from his footballing ability, love the way he has responded. His humble and no nonsense approach adds another reason for him to be adored by the United faithful. All the best Antonio!

  526. Sandeep1878 says:

    Lol at Prasan, :)

    ##

    Costas,

you make point mate, but what i mean if they say they want playing time so want a move, then even if we offered high wages, they will still turn us down..

    that’s how i take it..

as for Zeki, as i told, i dont know why we let him run the contract..i cant comment whethere he is good enough or bad, but Carrigton thinks we are ready to let him off the hooks..

    ##

and yeah as for your comment last geneartion of youth to PLAY FOR THE CLUB was 20 years back..

we have the likes of danny, Tom C, Tunni and Petrucci staying put and i m sure they are the next..

    ###

how many youth players have moved on because of lower wages? just one – POGBA..

that means others left for more game time, so the point of high wages is not a question there apart from Pogba case..

  527. Costas says:

    @Sandeep

Yeah, but for all we know, the Fryers situation might also be about money. It’s not that Fergie didn’t think he was good enough. That’s why he made an offer to him and his agent as he admitted this week. And since Fryers never got back to him, one can only assume that he’s leaving because he found a better one elsewhere. Imo a young player might turn down an offer due to financial reasons as well as the amount of opportunities he might get in the immediate future. But out of the two, money comes first I feel.

Anyway, speaking of those staying, not sure if it’s accurate but I read somewhere that Tunnicliffe’s deal expires next summer. So watch this space as they say…

  528. Sandeep1878 says:

    Costas,

    I got your point pal,

lets hope we keep them lads at home..

Maybe a change of philosophy is on the way:

    About time too.

So, it looks like not all the youngsters are leaving. :P

There’s also a rumor floating about in the Twitterverse that Sir Alex didn’t know what was happening with the Fryers situation and is mightily pissed that he’s about to leave.

  531. Sandeep1878 says:

    Costas,

    Just posting that on FB,

thanks pal and its a good change ;)

all those 3 players didn’t cost a pot!!
    now answer that!

One word amortisation, try it and apply it.

This has been posted before but it is worth watching again. If even half of those players make it, we’re guaranteed a lot of goodness in the years to come.

  534. Jeet says:

@Balaji: “Now if somebody like Tunnicliffe leaves, then I might start to look up and see that there’s a real problem. ”

Are you sure? You know me – I don’t intend to cause offense, but many might just turn around and say “He doesn’t want to play for United, well fuck him too!”

    “Revsionism” as Denton would say.

I’m not losing sleep over some unproven youngsters leaving the club, but I do think it can be prevented – I’m a wee bit on Costas’ side of the debate on this one!

Are you sure? You know me – I don’t intend to cause offense, but many might just turn around and say “She doesn’t want to play with Balaji but only with Jeet, well okay, fuck them both!”

    “Revsionism” as Denton would say.

I’m not losing sleep over some unproven brunettes leaving the pub, but I do think it can be prevented – I’m a wee bit on Casanova side of the debate on this one!

  536. Zino says:

Prasan, what goes on in your head is anyone’s guess. How do you come up with these ‘pieces’ of yours???!!!! Brilliant!!

  537. Sandeep1878 says:

    on this young players debate,

as i recall, we have signed 3 to 4 under 19 players since Jan this year..

Its not that we are not bothered about the young players, but agree that we should try to keep them..

but there is a real intent with signings of Andreas, Nick, Sean etc..

The reasons for Pogba and Ravel leaving are non football IMO..

and it looks like we have given up on Zeki,

    that’s what i feel..

nothing to worry, we are bringing in young players just like i mentioned above..

Manchester United moves on and always!!

  538. Utd4life says:

Money, Agents, impatience, lack of playing time- any or all of these factors may be responsible for causing Pogba and Fryers to leave us. It is unfortunate and sad that some of our brightest prospects are leaving the club but there are youngsters who will step up and occupy their places so I am not that worried.
However, the club should finalize a player’s contract before he enters into his final year. The club should not be foolish and naive to think that every player will blindly sign a new contract just because he plays for SAF and the biggest club in the world. Not everyone is like Scholes, Giggs, Fletcher or Valencia. In a lot of ways, the club is misusing a player’s loyalty towards the club by assuming that a player will sign a new contract without blinking an eye and so they let it run till their final year. Some genuinely want to play for Utd while some don’t. It is high time the club reviews it’s contract policy.

  539. Balaji Sivaraman says:

Jeet, LOL! A lot of people might say that. But not me.There’s always going to be a difference between the Reds and the rest. I wouldn’t expect players like Cole, Tunnicliffe, Keane brothers etc. to create a huge fuss over their contracts. Now, if someone like Welbeck put up some demands, I’ve got no problem with that. He’s played and scored some nice goals for the first team and he can be aggressive with his contract negotiations, and he most probably deserves it as well. But a youngster has no right to think that he’s entitled to a certain figure from the club. It is the same in all walks of life. Once you’re a proven performer in your firm, then you say to your boss, “Look, this is what I’ve achieved this year and I deserve this figure.” But would you even think about asking that to your boss when you’re new at a firm and haven’t achieved anything. Therein lies the difference for me.

  540. prasan_UTDfan4life says:

    @ Zino

Thank you my friend. It’s not that difficult my friend. You only need to take inspiration from absolute top class posters we have on here. You are only as good as your company. Hope, everyone gets entertained, that’s the only motive mate!

Talking of my head, a ‘head’ from Nigella would be welcome I guess! :P

Jeet, LOL! A lot of people might say that. But not me.There’s always going to be a difference between the Redheads and the rest. I wouldn’t expect chicks like Cheryl Cole, Meg Ryan, lezbo sisters etc. to create a huge fuss over their ‘contact regions’. Now, if someone like Sharapova put up some skirts, I’ve got no problem with that. She’s played and shown some nice holes on the tennis ground and she can be aggressive with her ‘contact’ positions, and she most probably deserves it as well. But a young chick has no right to think that she’s entitled to a certain ‘figure’ like the Kournikova club. It is the same in all walks of life. Once you’re a “proven performer” and have “firm” balls, then you say to your hot boss, “Look, this is what I’ve achieved this year and I deserve this ‘figure’.” But would you even think about asking that to your boss when you’re a new chick at a firm and haven’t achieved anything. Therein lies the difference for me.

Oh, I love the quotes and add-ons! :D

  542. Balaji Sivaraman says:

Prasan, You fucker! I am at a workplace and you’re making me all horny. Fuck you man! Stop doing this.

  543. Utd4life says:

Balaji. Very well said mate. If someone like leaves (touchwood, I hope that never says) over contract issues then I wouldn’t be too angry because the lad has proven himself and deserves a nice, healthy contract. You can only demand something when you have achieved something. And if lads like Pogba, Morrison and Fryers feel that they have arrived by making a couple of appearances for the first team then they are mistaken. Anyways, like you said, lads like Cole, Lingard, Tunni, the Keane brothers should not cause the club any such problems. I am hoping they don’t.

  544. Utd4life says:

*if someone like Welbeck leaves. Sheesh!!!

  552. Fibes says:

I personally rate Fryers as quite a bit better than ‘average’. Class both in the reserves and his limited first team experience last term. For me was MOM in the Leeds game, absolutely solid.

Think it would be a mistake for the lad to leave, and a mistake for us to lose him.
