VDS: That Save In Moscow Was Special

After confirming he will be retiring at the end of the season, Edwin Van der Sar has reflected back on his brilliant career, singling out his penalty save against Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka, which won United the European Cup, as the best moment.

“That save in Moscow is a nice moment to look back on,” said Edwin. “It is easier for strikers to be the hero. A goalkeeper might make an excellent save but if a forward scores in the last minute, the headlines are all for him. That is fair. They are there to score the goals. But Moscow was a very special moment, which will stay with me for a long time.”

    Young side. Interesting to see how things go at the back without Vidic.

  2. willierednut says:

    Southampton will fancy an upset, looking at that team. Still, It’s another chance for one or, two, to impress the manager.

  3. Ash says:

    Good team.Hope gibson has a good game otherwise his days at united would be left numbered.
    I am feeling gutteg because here in india dont when the match began,I doubt whether they are showing the match live.Anyone from india or bangladesh pls tell about the time.

  4. Chicharito14 says:

    WHAT IS THE FORMATION? 433?

  5. Costas says:

    If Scholes and Ando play well, we could control the game. I just don’t get how the attacking system works. Owen or Chicharito on the left? That won’t work.

  6. Owen says:

    @ Costas :

    Brown is a different case as Fergie has some personal problems with the lad it seems.But give him a run of 10 games.He will not be world class but definitely PL class.Brown reminds me of Phil Nev but Phil was lucky enough he left at right time…

  7. Chicharito14 says:

    a couple of weeks ago SAF made it clear that Wes brown was not for sale. here is the link http://www.sportingo.com/football/a17885_ferguson-blocks-defenders-move-tottenham

    @Costas
    I remember Chico starting on the left once, though I also remember that it didn’t work out too well then.
    I’m guessing it will be a narrow 4-3-3, with Obertan alongside the two strikers- sort of like the position Nani played in against Everton.

    @ Ash :

    Check out TenSports at 10:45 but m not sure…

    These days life at Utd does not depend on performance.If you are loyal and respectful,then you are here otherwise…

    @Owen

    I know, but the bottom line is the same when you think about it. Neither one plays at the moment. And I am actually more upset about the Brown thing because he should be the alternative to Rafael. As for Nev, as I said above, he has one of those seasons where the veteran is on his way out. His form last spring deservingly got him a new contract. But now we have options there, so naturally he will fade out of the picture.

  11. Costas says:

    @dela

    Probably. And better that than playing 4-4-2 with Gibson on a wing. I was expecting an experimental attacking side to be honest. Nani and Giggs had to be rested and Obertan is the only winger left.

  12. Tony Starks says:

    If he doesn’t want Wes Brown why does he not let him leave?

  13. Owen says:

    @ Costas:

    That is exactly what is bad about Fergie.Brown is such a good lad and has 2-3 years left to play at the top.But he is not even considered a back up at this club.He is now 5th choice RB (Rafa,Oshea,Nev,Fletcher ahead) and 5 th choice CB.So tell him to got.He will start for almost all the mid table good teams…I really feel sorry for the las as he has always respected the club a lot and has never said a single word against it…

  14. Costas says:

    @Owen

    I feel the same. Apparently though, he had some words against the manager and that has cost him his spot. If you are going to believe gossip, of course… Why he is not letting Wes go? My guess is that he wants to keep him until the summer when he will use him as part of a package deal to get another player..

  15. King Eric says:

    Owen – Hhmm. Are you sure? Didn’t seem that way pre season when he told Fergie to get fucked or words to that effect. He has quite CLEARLY upset Fergie but it like you and Costas say it begs the question. Why not let him leave then?

    Against the aunt sallies of the league Four got rapped past us,and we wont mention Leeds last year.Teams play differently against us than say Fulham,I am not 100% confident with Thomaz in goal but come on a newcomer and there two or Three that concern me and think once again we have relegated the value of this competition to us.I don’t doubt the confidence you have that there is enough to carry the day but like I say draw imo.

  17. King Eric says:

    Oh bugger off Costas – Beat me to it as per usual!!!

  18. Costas says:

    Always one step ahead KIng Eric. ;)

    it is ridiculous that fans claim to have no understanding of the Wes Brown situation, and then, in the same breath, they accuse Sir Alex of unfair bias, and suggest remedies.

    Until you know the truth, don’t accuse or judge the gaffer.

  24. ahjs says:

    Great save. Almost as satisfying as John Terry’s miss. Liked his interview after the match. Fuckin’ hell! was hit Football..bloody hell moment.

    And I’m reminded of his save every time commentators pipe up with that annoying cliché that penalties are a lottery. This shootout was fascinating and Edwin was losing the psychological battle but in the end he out-thought Anelka.

    it really was…
