In the first half of Manchester United U-21s game against Middlesbrough U-21, Joe Rothwell was the victim of a nasty challenge on the edge of the box by Jonathan Burn. While the foul was clear to the fans who filled the Sir Alex Ferguson stand at Old Trafford, the referee somehow missed it, waving play on.

Five minutes later, and just before half-time, Rothwell limped off down the tunnel, replaced by Andreas Pereira.

A foul that should have been a straight red card wasn’t even deemed worthy of a freekick. Thankfully, United went on to win 1-0 regardless, and we can hope that that Rothwell isn’t too badly injured. He can be grateful that he was able to walk off the pitch though, and didn’t suffer a broken leg.
