Fernando Torres was guilty of two blatant dives in Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea last night. The referee booked him for the second and gave him a strong talking to after the first.
In what was yet another dismal night for Torres, following his £50m transfer fee from Liverpool, he was incredibly lucky to remain on the field. Luckily for Chelsea, the referee didn’t see him raising a hand to Rio Ferdinand’s face so didn’t give him the straight red he deserved.

I would like to ask for some support of the Ref who I think was strong in the face of withering intimidation and shocking behaviour from Chelsea for the entire match. In the end, he may only get media attention to a “possible” missed call. But let’s have some context. Chelsea were committing foul after foul that this ref was letting pass. Some have suggested that no less than 3 chelsea players could have been off well before the end. But lets just focus on the infamous non call in extra time. Chelsea had just had Torres booked for his second dive of the match. There was at least one other dive but I can recall who. Now the ref has a decision, His angle and the change in the path of the ball seemed to suggest that Evra got it right. This was confirmed by the non call of the 5th official. So I would like to send a shout out to this ref. I think he did a fine job in the end. Possibly missed a pen at the end, but surely missed several stone wall fouls that should have seen the Chavs well and truly humbled at home.
