VIDEO: Chris Smalling Scores Winner For England U-21

Chris Smalling scored the winner with just over 5 minutes to play for England U-21 against Romania U-21 tonight. Danny Welbeck started as a lone striker and should have been given a penalty after dribbling in to the box. England’s opening goal came from a cleared Tom Cleverley corner landing at the feet of Jordan Henderson.

This boy is starting to develop, at the moment he needs to work on his defending but he is only 20, i think we may have a prolific goal scoring defender here even though i’d always put defensive prowess over some sort of goal scoring defender.

  2. Costas says:

    Can’t stop scoring!

  3. FletchTHEMAN says:

Showed quick feet from the lad. You can say he couldn’t have missed, but then many have shown how how tough it can be. Isn’t this his second goal for the U21′s?
    Good looking lad.

Good to see Cleverly playing, I thought he was injured?! A goal and an assist to the United lads. Well done!

  4. fucktheglazers says:

i watched the whole game, cleverley was brilliant aswell.
him and smalling are our future!

  5. FletchTHEMAN says:

    @f**ktheGlazers,
Thanks for the report. Picked up a couple of positives in this game. Cleverly back from injury is number one for me.

  6. rooney the new king says:

I have always said this, he is a better all-round player and defender than evans, and he will become one of the all round centre greatest halfs in the game today

  7. united.george says:

Does anyone know how Fletcher, Evans or Vidic did? cant have been too much fun for Nemanja since Serbia lost 3-1 at home to Estonia….

  8. willierednut says:

United.George – Evans done ok, he played at left back against Italy.

  9. willierednut says:

Corry also came on, but it was late in the game.

  10. samuel - united WE stand says:

Looks like even the manager has lost faith in evans as a centre half at the moment, he needs to work on his strength and aerial ability, gets beaten far to easily in the air and if he a to play regularly for united in the premier league, he’d have sort out his issues, clearly a talented player but he is no way a finished article yet and who better to learn from than vidic & rio.

We certainly are building a very good young team though , in a few years after the transition, they could be great if they all fulfill there obvious potential.

  11. Doghouse says:

I see no evidence that faith has been lost in Evans. Rio got back to fitness, Rio returned to the starting eleven.

I’ve seen a few examples of Smalling having quick feet in attack, and he can find the goal with his head too, that’s a major asset for us in the long term if we can get somebody to take decent corners. While United flair and these elegant sweeping attacks that we all love will always be the weapon of choice, but there’s a lot to be said for chucking your big men forward on a set piece as a Plan B, and it’s something we’ve not seen anything of lately.

If this lad Cleverly can cross and can take corners then he ought to be back at Old Trafford fighting for a place in the team, not out on loan. We need artillery because as the Rangers games showed there are some teams against which you simply cannot score pretty goals.

  12. King Eric says:

Doghouse. Just to confirm young tom whips a decent corner in

  13. united.george says:

The latest smear campaign by the media against United is about Wes Brown supposedly having a shouting match with SAF during the american tour and that is the reason he has not played much……

It is going to be a very long 7 days until we play again!!

  14. Zulu-Malta says:

Lets hope he will score lots of goals for us in the future and defend them as well !

  15. Lovely.United says:

So Exactly how many of our young Reds feature in the U21′s for the Poms?

  16. obertanthenewstar says:

    @lovely.united

cleverly danny welbeck and chris smalling all featured yesterday

  17. Callum says:

Are you sure about Cleverley? I seem to recall him taking about 5-10 of the worst corners i’ve ever seen in pre-season.

Great prospect, i’m only talking about his corner-taking

  18. bigphil2003 says:

Samuel, evans has always played left back for northern ireland in case you’re implying he was played there due to lack of faith at CB. He did well but had a few dodgy passes here and there.

  19. Giles Oakley says:

I watched the England U-21 match on TV and I thought all the United lads did well. Smalling looks strong, assured on the ball, always looking for options when in possession, and generally improving in positional play. Sometimes he’s over-ambitious with his long balls out to the wings, but better that than just giving the easy ball sideways all the time.He does have silly lapses in concentration, but he’s only 20 and look how long it took for Rio to eradicate those. (We like to recall the ’4-3 mate’ Owen winner, but it would not have been necessary if Rio hadn’t gifted Mad Dog Bellamy an easy goal).

I also thought Cleverley did well, improving in penetration in the second half. I guess he was subbed as he’s coming back from injury.

By chance I met a Watford director yesterday and I asked for his assessment of Cleverley (on loan there for last season) and he says he’s ‘a brilliant footballer’, with everything it takes to get to the top, and he’s also a very impressive young man. He praised the way United not only produce good young players but also raise them ‘knowing how to behave’ and raised with ‘good values’ and it shows in the way Tom conducts himself as a person. He said he had been at a Rangers match the other night and bumped into Fergie’s brother and they talked about Tom, agreeing how well he’s doing and and what a fine young man he’s turning out to be.

Finally, let’s not forget Danny Welbeck, who worked his socks off all night as a lone striker, showing guts and determination with little support . His control under pressure is good and he never gives up, constantly harrassing defenders, forcing them into errors, fighting to get the ball back all the time. I’ve always liked him, so I’m biased, but I really hope he returns to United as when he’s filled out a bit, I think he’s going to be a top player.

  20. Callum says:

It’ll be a real shame if Welbeck doesn’t make it at United. Brought up right near the ground, wasn’t he? I don’t care about how many English players we have, because if you’re from Colchester or somewhere then you might as well be from Rio de Janeiro for all that matters to representing Manchester – but it’s great to see local lads on the pitch.

  21. Callum says:

Incidentally, I can’t remember if I mentioned this before, but I was at a house party in Sheffield once, it was getting towards the end of the night and there was only one attractive girl left, who was sitting on her own. My friend casually mentioned that she went to school with Danny Welbeck. She was talking to me, and, trying to think of something to say, I asked her.

“So, you went to school with Danny Welbeck? What was he like?”

    “Sporty.”

Astonishingly, I did not get laid that night.

  22. willierednut says:

Callum – You must be doing wrong mate, you’ve got to charm this women lol.

  23. Bebeto says:

Startling how a couple of solid defensive displays and a few goals can quickly silence the naysayers. Seeing as how I’ve been quite pessimistic in my outlook on Fergie’s tactics of late, I’ll cautiously praise him for bringing this lad to the club.

P.s. Callum, “sporty” strikes me as being the response of an idiot, although you should always account for the possibility that you’re engaging a gorgeous moron.

  24. Callum says:

She wasn’t that attractive, she was just the best available on the night. I don’t know if she was that thick, I think she was just off her tits on something to be fair.

  25. willierednut says:

Callum – Sounds like you dodged a bullet then lol.

  26. Callum says:

It was ‘that sort of party.’ First thing I saw when I got let in was a guy snorting a line of something off a bongo. Not drugs slang there, an actual bongo.

That was in my straight days though, it’s a lot easier to get laid with someone who knows who Danny Welbeck is now..

  27. Callum says:

anyway, that was a digression and a half. he looks like he’s going to be a really great defender, Smalling. I’m sure he’ll make one or two high-profile fuck-ups but what defenders don’t at that age. I’m sure he’ll be a big part of the new generation.

  28. King Eric says:

Callum – Ha top post’s mate. Snorting off an actual bongo? Why?

  29. Callum says:

Didn’t stop to ask to be honest! It was in a huge house, one of those they converted where about nine students were living there. It was in a terrible winter, on top of a hill, in Sheffield, and it was so big they couldn’t afford to heat it, so it was bitterly cold inside. It was my mate’s birthday and the entire ground floor had basically been taken over by loads of people he barely knew. Spent most of the night camped up in his room with about four guys, wearing coats and gloves and with a camping stove and whisky to keep the cold out. Good times.
