VIDEO: Excellent Rio Tackle Which Resulted In A Pen

szólj hozzá: Ma1-1Ne[Matchhighlight.com]

Rio Ferdinand put in a brilliant challenge on Ben Arfa in the box only for the linesman John Flynn to flag for a penalty. Mike Jones, who was filling in for Phil Dowd, had initially rightly indicated that a corner should be awarded, before a discussion with Flynn saw him award a penalty, denying United the three points.

Who said that the opposition never get the call at OT ?

Burnstien pays them Burnstien briefs them. Now looks like Burnstiem dresses them in his beloved Man Shitty Blue. Thank god the ref defied him against Sunderland.

  5. mufc m41 says:

Just got back from the game. No one in the ground thought it was a penalty except the linesman. I could see it wasn’t a penalty even from where I was. Terrible decision and hopefully one which doesn’t prove costly at the end of the season. Gutted!

  6. kanchelskis says:

First time I’ve seen it. Fuck me sideways.

With the amount of money in the game, is it too much to ask the PL to pay for full-time linos, as opposed to these no-mark clowns?

What a disaster……. The lads did put in a good showing which is positive even though we didn’t get the rub of the green today

  9. Fred says:

    We wuz robbed, guv.

  10. StatesideAussie says:

Even that scouse cunt McManaman in the TV commentary was stunned by this decision, and he isn’t exactly our biggest fan. One of the worst decisions I have ever seen. I am quite capable of supporting a controversial decision against us when I think it was right. But this was a stone-cold shocker.

  11. RedHarry4Life says:

So United ALWAYS get the decesions at OT?

Bit like the offside goal, Bit like the Distain tackle, bit like webb disallowing the giggs/rooney corner.

Refs alway give United the decesions don’t we!

  12. slim says:

A taste of F.A referees finest. Fuck this, how about Hernandez’s offside?

  13. NotoriousRedDevil says:

Doesn’t look any better when you see it again? They say these things balance themselves out over a season. Well lets hope we get a penalty like that at the bridge or better still wastelands in the last minute.

  14. HV says:

i don’t usually rant, but im fking pissed off at this. Watching this video makes me even more angrier, bcus United put in a good performance today, despite only getting 1 point in the bag. We were jus clearly unlucky today, but to be fair, Newcastle defended well today as well..agreed?

  15. Balaji Sivaraman says:

@Fred, LOL! For some reason, you never fail to put a smile on my face. :)

@Stateside, Ex-fucking-actly! I am one of those who constantly veers away from criticizing referees. They have a really tough job to do and every decision from them is going to be scrutinized. I can forgive the countless offsides because they really were tight calls. I absolutely cannot forgive a decision like that. Anyone with two eyes can clearly see that the ball has moved tangentially to the direction in which the player’s natural momentum would’ve taken it. That should make it pretty clear that the defender got a touch on the ball. Pathetic decision.

The worst part is that the F.A. wraps a cotton wool over its officials. If players can be criticized and dropped or sold, managers can be criticized and sacked, why the fuck should referees not be criticized, held accountable for their decisions and sacked for a few games at least. Fuck me, I know we have these debates many times but until the authorities are keen on taking action, we are going to be left with mediocre referees making game and championship changing decisions.

  16. Zibbie says:

Have not passed out yet, trying to.
    Fuck.

  17. Costas says:

Never thought I’d miss Phil “Fuckface” Dowd so much.

  18. denton davey says:

    Slim @ 18:30: “how about Hernandez’s offside?”

Another bad decision – but, at least, it was adjudged according to the rules. Well, almost – the attacking is supposed to get the benefit of the doubt and there was no way all of Chicharito’s body was ahead of the last defender.

FWIW, the offsides rule is patently anachronistic which, nowadays, allows for too much arbitrariness and poor decision-making by officials.

My “solution” would be something like the ice hockey off-side rule whereby the field would be organized into zones and once the ball is in the attacking zone there would be no off-side calls. The objection to this is that it would allow for “goal-hanging” but, surely, that’s a small price to pay for getting a clearer, less arbitrary system – isn’t it ?

Of course, when the powers-that-be can’t even bring the game out of the 19th century and create some sort of goal-line technology then there’s bugger-all chance of adapting the off-sides rule to a 21st century game played by bigger, faster, stronger, and more athletic guys.

  19. It's in my blood says:

Now is the time to put your money on United for the title.
We won’t get another game like that in which we fail to get the winner late on.
At least we looked more like the real United in those last 20 mins or so.
As for that twat of a linesman, i hope he gets home to find his Mrs is pregnant with a Mancs baby.
    Cunt.

  20. slim says:

Le’Arse game similar to ours – well sort of. Till that went in

  21. StatesideAussie says:

Denton … the offside rule isn problematic mostly because there’s too much happening, too quickly, in too many different places all at the same time for one person to monitor. This is one area where they could use a video referee. They already have the ability to quickly and accurately superimpose a line across the field on a freezeframe and it doesn’t take long. That goal today could have been reviewed in a few seconds. As for the rule itself, it doesn’t require the entire body to be offside. All it requires is any part of the body that can be used to play the ball — leg, body, head, ass, basically everything except the hand or arm. And in this case, it looked to me like it was Hernandez’s arm that was offending.

I don’t like the hockey idea. I like it for hockey, but not for football. It would change the game too much. I think it would lead to a massive increase in penalties, since once the ball is in the zone, teams would simply crowd the goal area and goal mouth, which would create a melee there. Like what happens at a corner, except that could and probably happen fairly constantly while the ball is in play. Then, when the ball comes out of the zone (as in hockey), everyone from the attacking team would have to pile out again. I just can’t see it working. Though those who know their football history will know there was a time when it was illegal to pass the ball forward, no matter where you were on the field. Passing the ball forward was not only against the rules (as it remains to this day, in rugby) but according to contemporary accounts, was even considered “unmanly”!

  22. Lorena says:

I despise Chelsea FC and their Asta la Vista Baby coach.

  23. Mikekelly12 says:

It was a shocker no doubt. I don’t understand why the fuck the ref didn’t overrule it. The ref was on the side where you could see rio make contact with the ball, the liner was on the side where the ball was obscured by the player. The ref was also closer. For the ref to change his mind the liner must have said RIO DEFINATELY did not touch the ball. This is obviously a lie as he blatantly did! Just dont get it. Of course the cunt won’t have to justify himself!!

  24. andymufc says:

Lets have a bet. Fergie gets banned and the linesmen aren’t asked to do extra training sessions. The FA priorities from the top, looking big doing fuck all.

  25. izzy says:

I am betting my money for Man City to be this season’s champions. As much as i hate that happening, but it looks more and more likely……7 points are massive points to catch, esp with the way modern football is played now…. fuk…

  26. lordrt says:

Lineman got it all wrong, but lets hope the bitters lose at the scousers so we can still stay close behind them

  27. Mikekelly12 says:

We’re 4 points behind them! Granted, 2 would have been better but 4 none the less.

  28. RedHound says:

@HV , nah, no team would have deserved anything at Old Trafford today, the way we played

  29. Jeet says:

That was some fucking tackle from Rio. He’s still got it. MOTHERFUCKING REF – HOPE HE GETS THE CLAP FROM THE SHEIKH

Slim it was me buddy, utter crap that I regret, sound like a fucking twat I did, i always keep my cool, but that one time Young’s form and stupidity on the day got the better of me.

However I stick by my comment SAF was Stoned on the Bench ! Too much fun with Mike Phelan

Anyone see Rene Muelensteen when the Camera was near him, he was out of it, off his nut, fella struggled to keep his eyes open, them 3 was lighting up in the tunnel, half time, full time.

    - The team is always set out to represent the managers characteristics –
On This day our Manager was High & Fly as a Bird, explains why Chicha ,Nani and Young struggled to stand up on their feet without wobbling.

Did Fergie give any explanation why Fletcher, Jones and Berbatov weren’t even on the bench?

  37. StretfordEnd Ole says:

when I saw it live at the game I knew it was a mistake but presumed that the lino and the ref must have been unsighted and that Rio may have caught Ben Arfa as he made the tackle but that was the most clean tackle i’ve seen in ages.

I guess Sir Alex will be expecting an apology from the ref in his in-box on Monday morn and an explanation from the FA?

  38. Sandeep1878 says:

Good Evening lovely Red Devils around the world,

    Poor decision by linesman..

i think we were very good defensively, yes i mean that, carrick-Vidic-Rio were superb..

on the other hand we missed many chances, Chicharito was not at his best today for sure, Rooney is off color ever since he was moved to midfield..

well, we shud have killed the game, we were unlucky, credit to Magpies, they defended well..

as i have been telling, i m getting used to this style and tempo of our play..

i dont see it improving anytime soon..

its a transition..and i m ready to wait, for i know we will come back banging all over again,

but until then i have to accept we are not at our powerhouse best, nothing wrong in accepting when we arent the best according to our standards..

Long way to go, lot of weak links to be addressed and addressed they will be as the season goes on or may be next season,

it doesnt mean i have given up hope, but i just feel we need big time to get back to the glorious best, i mean it…

    Manchester United

  39. Mikekelly12 says:

No offence but so the fuck what?! Have I got the wrong Callander up in my gaff or is it already may?! Jesus wept!!

  40. WillieRedNut says:

Love to how the linesman came to that decision? Common sense is lost on the plan old logic. As Cedars would say, dumb fuck!

  41. Fred says:

Costas – we can only assume: Fletcher isn’t strong enough to play so many games in succession anymore; Jones had a salon appointment to get his highlights re-done, then he was going to take his new Aston Martin for a spin; our Carling Cup man was rested ahead of Wednesday’s crunch game against Crystal Palace (we need Berba fit now that Carling Cup legend Michael Owen is injured.)

  42. WillieRedNut says:

  44. Jeet says:

@MIkekelly: Ohh, read my posts, I’m not saying “we are fucked” yet. Just pointing out something that’s not quite exhilarating news. We still have a chance, no doubt. But you must admit it’s not looking easy. Here’s a tissue for Jesus, but then he needs something handsfree I guess (no offence to any religious sentiments) :)

  45. slim says:

    Sandeep1878

thats one way of looking at it. its a bit frustrating. Lots of niggly things to look out for like you pointed out. Time will unravel all. Its the wait that maddening.

  46. Cantona7 says:

Fucking disgrace. Even Mark Lawrenson said it wasn’t a pen. For once I hope the scousers do us a favour tomorrow otherwise I’m getting worried. By the way – does Fergie still believe that our midfield is good enough ?

  47. Costas says:

Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of things. When did Welbeck get injured? While he was with England?

    @Fred

Lol, Jones and his highlights. So your heel turn is legit then. You and I will be the new Legion of Doom since we are so positive. 8)

  48. slim says:

Oh and we have more than a chance to win the league, I’m surprised by you result oriented crew giving in so easily. For someone who tends to look a bit too deeply at performances than results, its very surprising. But i guess thats the problem, we aren’t even looking at our selves, bothering ourselves with cittay ain’t gonna do much. I guess we’ll find out how serious they are about winning the title on Sunday

  49. avishek says:

by looking at the ball which was going away from the attacking player one can come to the conclusion that it wasnt a penalty.maybe the linesman blinked his eyes while rio got the foot in and opened to see the player down so he came to the decision.it may be termed as a short nap.

  50. Moses says:

We are 5 points ahead of last season after 13 games and City’s start has just been unbelievable and they could have had maximum points had they not dropped that two goal lead at Fulham. They might be on a historic run or they will run into trouble when all the other sides treat the games against them like a cup final.

Question is if we can continue doing well and capitalise on any mistakes they make. We cannot afford to fail like we did today but the feeling from the game is that our play clicked into gear today and that it was some kind of turning point in our season.

We had 25 points after 13 games last season and were 3rd.

  51. Red Simmo says:

I seriously cannot believe everyone is bleating on about the bad penalty decision!

Yes, a wrong decison – yes, it got them back in the game. But let’s get serious here, we had 25 minutes to score again and about 10 of those with them down to 10 men.

Why were key players not even on the bench? saving them for the mighty Palace perchance?
Why did we not see Valencia? Why did we bring Macheda on with just 3 mins to go when they had given up all efforts to enter our half once they went down to 10 men – he should have come on as soon as they made their change and put lovenkrands in midfield than up top.

We simply didnt take our chances and found a team in either fine defensive form or with remarkabe luck.

We have now scored just one goal in each of the last 6 PL games – on paper, simply not good enough.

however, to my mind – at least our attacking prowess in midweek and today has improved over recent dismal performances.

Dont give up just yet – I can see the bitters losing tomorrow and at the Arse in the cup – that will fuck up their ‘we are as good as barca’ bollocks!

Imagine all the CTID mercenaries in the Europa cup?
Pay them what you want, stick them in a mansion in Alderley Edge with a fucking helicopter pad and a bright yellow Ferrari – that will hurt!

    We will prevail!
As Fergie said in ’99 after an appalling decison by David ‘fucking’ Elleray when we were robbed at anfield – “we want this title and we will not allow cunts like elleray to fuck up our chances, faggot cunt”
(or at least, something similar to this but possibly with different words)

  52. Mikekelly12 says:

Maybe the linesman was re-reading the cheque he was handed at half time by some mysterious Arab ?!!

  53. Gora says:

Gotta say i was disappointed by our 2midfielders on the penalty incident.i mean, why the hell did carrick or giggs not put in a tackle.they literally escorted ben afa to rio.we need a ball winner and fast

  54. Devil310 says:

I hear all this blame put on the lines man, and Yes it was a shitty decision, however, Missed chances cost us the game….and I’m not talking about the last 15mins….I’m talking about the sitters both Hernandez and Young had. Both should have done better and put the game to sleep. We cannot and will not win the title if we can’t finish off clear chances like that.

  55. Balaji Sivaraman says:

@slim, For someone who I called a cynical bastard, you’ve maintained a positive outlook after these past two matches despite the majority of the general opinion being negative. :)

For me, it is still December. Unless people think City can win all their remaining games, they are going to drop points. Not two ways about it. And as I said our performances are improving, once we get that stable setup going – something which may never happen this season – we should start getting the results under our belt. It also has to be said that, overall, our results have been much better. City’s sparkling form is masking just how stable our overall start has been.

City cannot maintain this form over 38 games, it is just the law of nature. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean they “will” drop points when they have a dip in form, but it isn’t unfathomable. After that happens, we’ll see whether City are still on top and, if they aren’t, whether we are in a position to catch them. Until then, there is going to be no doom and gloom from me.

  56. Sandeep1878 says:

    Slim,

    Evening pal,

Yeah its that way i look at it,

by the way, it was watching the game with couple of my Liverpool friends,

them and commentator had a special mention on the importance of Carrick to our team,

glad that people are changing their views on Carrick..

but i know there will be many carrick ranters,

i still say, today we defended well, bad luck decisions like that cant justify it and even the score line,

but in the last few games, we are tight, not letting too many shots on to De Gea,

on another note, Young has step it up, he is back from injury and i hope he will settle in fast..

also i have no objection for Berba, Jones and Flecth not being on bench even,

it wasnt our day, poor finishing by strikers and lineman, excellent defending by Magpies, world class performance by Krul – it wasnt just our day even when we arent at our best..

  57. Costas says:

    @Moses

That’s one way to look at it. Another is to look at the points we gathered from the same 13 fixtures last season. We are 2 points behind that tally after today’s result. And if we beat Villa, we’ll have the same amount of points. Either way, we are still on course for approximately 80-85 points and I don’t believe they will be enough this season.

  58. Moses says:

Still not seen any comments about Chicharito offside at the end and if it was a correct decision cause that incident was far more important than the penalty cause we had loads of chances and should have won anyway.

  59. WillieRedNut says:

It was Krul on us? ;) On the title race: People should refrain until tomorrow. It could be 4 points. Not the expected 2, but still a little ground made. Our home form has been remarkable. I would never write United, or Fergie off. Sadly, some have chosen that direction already.

  60. Moses says:

Yes Costas, so in that sense it is looking good. It was after the first 13 games last season we really started going and got to the top of the table and stayed there all season.

  61. Fred says:

    Red Simmo – great post!

    Costas –

  62. WillieRedNut says:

Moses – Tough luck today? Leeds look a beaten docket!

  63. Fred says:

Sir Alex on the offside goal: “We kept making chances and that’s the normal pattern of these last 15-minute surges,” he added. “We do get chances and usually do okay. We were unlucky with the offside as, if Michael doesn’t touch it, Chicharito is onside.”

Carrick is the scapegoat YET again.  Surprised he didn’t try to put the blame on Berba. ;)

  64. Moses says:

Since some of you keep mentioning Leeds I remember when we won there and Bosnich had a fantastic game in goal for us. I think it was the same game when Fergie put Beckham in the stands.

  65. Fred says:

I’m feeling a lot more philosophical about it now. Let’s wait and see what happens tomorrow. 8)

    YNWA

  66. Moses says:

Thanks Fred, that made it feel a bit better cause I missed Carrick getting a touch on the ball so that naturally made Chicharito end up offside. Imagine if they had got that wrong as well.

  67. avishek says:

maybe the linesman was scratching his balls with his whistle in mouth and then suddenly he went in too aggressively and smashed…

  68. WillieRedNut says:

Carrick is a bona fide scapegoat!

Nice one Moses. Leeds are stinking the place out.

  69. Red Simmo says:

I still cannot believe how naive Johnny Evans was giving that penalty away today.

  70. slim says:

    Fred

really? its only taken a few hrs

  71. Gudjohnsen says:

    This is never offside: http://i43.tinypic.com/21n4478.jpg

  72. Fred says:

Gudjohnsen – that arsebandit Carrick touched it on to Cheech when he had moved offside. :(

Gordon Strachan was saying on TV that the lino couldn’t possibly have seen that though, so the lino probably was (incorrectly) flagging Cheech.

  73. Sandeep1878 says:

    Gora,

    dont get me wrong,

it was a ball won by Rio,

lets not put blame this fucking incident on midfielders,

midfielders cant and need not win the balls all the time, if they do that then why do we need centerbacks?

in my opinion, Carrick was our best player today, in last 2 games in fact…

i m happy with our defense in the last 4 games in the league,

as i said, fucking linesman and scoreline point out the blame at wrong at direction, not fair, they dont deserve it

  74. GoatinaUnitedShirt says:

Referee this lines man that. We can blame someone else untill we’re blue in the face but its the players that allowed the play to get into the box and its the players that fail to put balls on the net. With ref decissions we win some and we lose some and over an entire season we get our fair share.
Generally i thought the defence was allright except fabio at times. Carrick was brilliant and great to have him back. Young and Nani were ok but against very mobile full backs and tackling back wingers. Giggs showed some nice touches and Hernandez was putting himself about a bit but his touch let him down. Id like to see Rooney be more of a threat only the effort that turned into a goal was worth talking about despite the fact he sat in midweek and that bad freekick resulted in a very good left foot volley. A volley non the less that cost the club £200000, and you lot complain about the hike in season ticket prices. I think the expensive Arsenal tickets get a damn sight better value from their star striker.
Midweek was really good against Benfica with a beautiful display by a striker who can pass. Today we didnt feel the need to pass because we were happy making cunts like Ben Arfa, Guitarez and Obertan look world class. So we went with fat Gerrard instead.

  75. Costas says:

I remember us getting away with a call like this when we won at Analfield with O’Shea’s goal. Someone crossed the ball in our box and Bellamy was onside. Cissoko (remember him) got a slight touch on the ball before it reached Bellamy, who then scored. The goal was disallowed because Bellamy was offside when Cissoko touched the ball. Unfortunately that’s how it goes and the show was on the other foot today. Carrick was too overzealous, but it’s nothing to blame him about. The problem with grinding out results is that you depend heavily on the refs getting it spot on all the time.

  76. united.george says:

    from Rio’s twitter….

    @rioferdy5
Yeah…p***** off with the result today…nutting my steering wheel was contemplated on my way home from the game earlier…wtf

  77. MG says:

    Let me say this:

Was the linesman 100% sure of the penalty from that angle? Because the fucking ass of a ref had given a corner since he was closer to play so therefore why the fuck would he want to take advice on a non event since he was quite clearly more appropriate to judge the incident than the assistant? He clearly should have over ruled the incident and booked Ass-Fa for fucking diving.

Because I tell you what the goal is more of a goal than the penalty being given which smacks of ignorance then from the officials.

I’ll leave it there – right there because I’m happy the Gaffer didn’t throw the fucking kitchen sink at the officials hence opening up the pussy box at the FA

Well done Gaffer. We shall move on – in fact after today I think we’ll be just fine.

  78. Little Red Ant says:

So what is going to happen to this fucker -no more running the line at Prem games big deal . How can you get this so wrong – lets hope he is big enought to say he got it wrong and not hide behind his association

    WANKER

  79. Fred says:

When was the last time StR did a “quick reactions” post? City game? :?

  80. WillieRedNut says:

My 10 reactions/observations from todays travesty of justice:

1.How the fuck did we loose the toss?
    2.I prefer Rafael to Fabio
3.Rio and Vida equal more stability
4.Rooney? Stop with the Hollywood passes!
    5.Park should start more games
6.Still not fully clicking in the attacking department
    7.Give Young a break
8.Carrick has looked like his old self last 2 games
    9.Hernandez was born offside
10.We’re not down and out of this title race. Keep the faith people!

    I love Manchester United. 8)

  81. Alom says:

First time I saw that.. what a tackle.. what a terrible decision..

Arrrgghhhh!!! That shit is so annoying.. I thought Berba should have started this upfront with Rooney… surely he would’ve had a better first half that Hernandez…

  82. MIDDYRED says:

As the game unfolded today i just knew it was going to be ‘one of those’ when the ball would just NOT go in the net and we would get caught on the break or concede a penalty, dubious or not. The trouble is that when you start to get more than one of those kind of games then you have to stop and think. Are we getting away with it far too often? Ageing players, inexperienced players, wrong decisions etc along with a poor buying policy combined with BAD team selection adding up to a ‘make do and mend’ team. If we are not careful the blip will become a slide and we will be at the end of the queue for titles /jtrophies. The solution? It has to start at the top with our ageing manager losing the plot. I was watching him today after the penalty incident and i am afraid he is showing all the symptoms of schizophrenia/Alchohol dependency/dementia plus all the usual signs of old age. Acting like a spoiled brat when asked by a hack at a press conference if his CL run was in trouble by standing up and walking out muttering to himself leaving everyone else open jawed in disbelief.
He is becoming an embarrassment to the Club. He should be asked to retire gracefully anytime soon.
Just my humble opinion, but at least i have the guts to come out with it.

  83. denton davey says:

StateSideAussie @ 19:11: “once the ball is in the zone, teams would simply crowd the goal area and goal mouth, which would create a melee there. Like what happens at a corner, except that could and probably happen fairly constantly while the ball is in play. ”

That’s certainly a possibility but there should be some testing of rule changes to the present definition of off-sides. In ice hockey, for example, lower-tier professional leagues will sometimes be “guinea pigs” and use a modified rule-change for a season to see how the game is affected; that seems sensible to me. Without a practical test of this kind, it’s going to be hard to see whether your suggestions are correct – or not.

My understanding of the current off-sides rule is that it is supposed to “favour” the attacking player insofar as he is NOT considered offsides unless there is daylight between him and the last defender. However, the application of this rule has never been consistent – except, of course, for the MartinAtkinsonMoment when Didier Drogba was two body-lengths beyond the last defender and “given on-side”, leading to the RentBoyz winner at OT in the spring of 2010 which then gave them the extra point to win the title.

While I recognize that my suggestion of some variant of the ice-hockey off-sides rule would be an improvement over the current situation, I’d be willing to go for something which applies the “daylight” principle and uses video replay to clarify problematic decisions. Of course, this would take a bit of extra time but considering how much time is “wasted” when players crowd the referree after a wrong (or unhappy) decision, I don’t think that that particular argument holds much water.

Perhaps the strongest argument for keeping things as they are concerns the massive difference in the availability of video evidence between high-profile matches and kick-abouts in the third/fourth divisions. But why can’t the “daylight rule” be applied without recourse to video replay in low-profile matches ?

He brought on Macheda to put height in the middle – KikoTheKid missed one header and then got in Vidic’s way with another misguided attempt. Playing Chris Smalling as the “NewDuncanFerguson” might have been a better idea !

Hope both of them are demoted to league ball for a couple of cycles. It was poor from the refs today.

Don’t know why NCFC is getting so many breaks, it is only down to ref decisions that they are top 4 right now.

Denton. I agree with you. But the difference between last year and this? There weren’t teams challenging all the way through. We also didn’t have an away win buy this point. But only thing that matters is the points total come end of the season. Cittay are worrying, but lets see what a billion dollars brings? RomanRule bought 2 titles for CSKALandon for alot less.

Think we were robbed today. And the Constabulary videotaped the proceedings. Not bitter. We played a hell of a game. Wasteful shots from us or it wouldn’t be an issue. Could have been 6-1, even with spotting them the undeserved pen.

Credit to Pardew and his team for his honesty about the pen and to NCFC who showed how to fit 10 men in the box and come out with some credit. Anyone needing a good review of the game should take a look at this summary of blocks:

As always the true measure of any fan quite simply boils down to:

    Do you still love United?

Carry on then – because no defeat no draw no miscarriage of justice nothing will stop you from standing by your team.

We may have needed an ass kicking from city we may have needed a freaky turn of events in Europe but today was one of those days that the players remember to forge a unity to come back and come back good.

The thing is I believe in my team and I know it.

28 years of supporting United tells me so.

    Never ever give in.

Willie, Fine, but Liverpool boss would have said it was deserved. Tip your hat if a man honors your side. That’s all I am saying. Pardew essentially said the refs handed them the point. I am just agreeing with him.

Just looked at the disallowed goal again as well. Thats another ref debacle. It was a good goal, never offside. Both Setanna commentators said the goal should have stood.

Still, credit where due. We could have stuck away our chances.
Right then, Bring on Crysal Palace at OT then away to Aston Villa. Can’t wait to get the bad taste out of my mouth.

@Cedars yeah mate i’m with you on Leeds used to get a super rush going there. The 3 i got my worst kickings at was Newcastle,Millwall and West ham

  111. Costas says:

    @Cedars

Fortunately (or maybe not I guess). I wasn’t following the club during those years. I’ll say this in all honesty. I wouldn’t mind going 2 or 3 seasons without winning the title as long as I saw my team play the United way. We don’t get that week in week out anymore. For example, I have fond memories of the 05-06 team even though it didn’t win the league and crashed out of Europe in the Ch.League group stages. However, it gave us a very very spirited performance against Chelsea at OT, a brilliant win against Liverpool in the 90th minute and some great football during the last 3 months of the season.

What pains me in this day and age isn’t that Sneijder or Ozil didn’t join us and we may lose the title. It’s that the team has no identity out there. Giggs wasn’t our best player today because at 38 he’s better than Nani, Young or Rooney. He was because he’s one of the few that gets it. City may win the title this season. Kudos. Can we at least say we got back to playing the United way? And by that I don’t necessarily mean 8-2 wins against Arsenal in basketball like games. I mean heart, desire and then free flowing football. Call this my letter to Santa for this holiday season. ;)

And when you get to that point then you cannot stop – people say United are like a drug, I just say we are born to support United for a reason.

At least some of us have that honesty within us

    @Cedars

Those are definitely elements that I do miss from the team right now. Gutsy players and a rocking atmosphere at OT. That’s not a knock on our current lads. I love them all. But I do miss the times when we weren’t so civilized. On the pitch and on the stands.

    @MG

It’s definitely a drug. This season I’ve had to miss a couple of games and I was grumpy the whole week. Out of curiosity, what was the game that turned you into a United fan? Mine was a 3-1 loss at IFK Gothenburg. I was on my way to become an Arsenal fan (wrong influences at school!) when I saw us claw our way back in a game we were struggling with, only to lose bravely. It was the fight that made me a United fan. Of course, if I had watched the Barcelona 4-0 hammering a few weeks earlier, I might have become a Barca fan.

Just feel so pissed off with 2 poor decisions that fucked us good and proper. Can’t fault the general game and our play but were just not getting that bit of luck.

  141. Giles Oakley says:

Just got back after a rare visit to Old Trafford, steaming enough at the penalty to drive Stephenson’s Rocket. It was a dreadful decision, as I could see very clearly from where I was sitting, or rather standing at that point.

It was a rank injustice, but there were some real positives to take from the game, especially the piling on of attacks at the beginning of the firtst half and after the pen in the second. I know we missed lots of chances, but we were making them time after time and on another day we’ll score six if we play like that. I’ve become very frustrated in recent weeks with the lack of attacking spirit, so it was great to see players giving it a right good go. Whether the dreadful pen decision will hand the title to City only time will tell, but I wouldn’t give up just yet. It’s still only November, and this is usually the time for us to start flexing our attacking muscles, as we did today.

One more thought, please don’t start knocking Chicha for his misses: all great strikers miss lots of chances, as Denis Law did, Jimmy Greaves did, and so on. It’s being in position to miss that counts. Let’s not start knocking him, he’s only a kid remember, and he’ll make mistakes, and he’s learning to expand his game, showing some great awareness at times with his link-up play and longer passing. And he never gives up, even when things go wrong – a lesson for those United fans who left before the end.

At first I didn’t get it – as a child we were only close to the odd FA Cups but even then United drew me closer for a reason.

Today as a father I know what that reason was.

  166. NotoriousRedDevil says:

Having slept on it not as pissed off as I thought I would be in regards to the penalty. Having read Cedars comment about the 80s I’m inclined to agree with him that a barren spell may weed out the deadwood fans who have been spolied the last 5 years.

In regards to losing some members of the squad I honestly believe Fergie wasn’t prepared for the Scholes retirement. He was hoping he would change his mind and this summer we chased players that had no realisitic chance of coming unless we altered our pay structure. Thats why everyone was buzzing about Cleverly because he came through the youth system. As Costas put it like Giggs he “gets it.” We’ve been used to having at least 2-3 players in any match day squad. That hasn’t happened so much this season with Scholesy’s retirement and the departures of O Shea and Brown.

I think our main problem is injuries which hasn’t allowed us to have a settled squad and this has been going on since 2009. Ever since we were forced to rotate centre back partnerships we don’t have a settled team. Does anyone know what the strongest XI is anymore? I know its a rotation game but we’ve fucked up a bit with the CL results so we have to rotate strong XI’s. I’d say we should play 6 or 7of the same players in each match but with the Christmas period coming up I only see this continuing. Frustrating time but its not doom and gloom like some are making out.

  167. WillieRedNut says:

Night Cedars, you mad SOB! :P

In terms of United, heavy is the head, that wears the crown.

This time tomorrow, things might be looking up.

    Night Reds. 19!

  168. Sparkz says:

Well and truly mugged off by the officials today. Not just the penalty, which was a shocker. But the Chicha goal which IMHO should have stood, benefit of the doubt and all that.

Was very pleased with the onslaught and the end, on another day we wouldve finished them off. Credit to Newcastle for some heroic defending and goalkeeping too.

However, after the first 10 minutes, and until the penalty….I thought we were sloppy. I’m loathe to criticise Sir Ryan but I thought he had a shocker. Ball retention is the key thing in the middle of the park, and he gave it away countless times. A few fancy flicks and dribbles doesn’t make up for that.

Carrick, as great as he’s been last 2 games, was below par in his distribution at times too (although he generally did well with the defensive side of things). Likewise Rooney constantly lost the ball as well. That central trio of players underperforming was a big part of why we struggled for practically half the game.

Nani was probably the only one of the midfield 4 that had a really good game….yet for the second game in a row, when we’ve been pushing for a winner in the last 20 minutes….we ignored him! Just like on Tuesday, we kept focusing on Young’s side. And just like on Tuesday, Young’s final ball was very poor.

As I said, was really pleased with the way we created so many chances (even before the penalty) and had luck been on our side, we would’ve won that game.

And I’m not holding out any hope of Liverpool getting something tomorrow….I still have very unpleasant memories of May 2010, when we needed a favour off them vs Chelsea. Started the game pretty well tbf..but once Gerrard gifted them the opener, the cunts as good as threw the game. Showed no intention of attacking in that second half whatsoever, I vividly remember how disgusted I was that afternoon.

  170. MG says:

I just think United need something else

And I think we are all barking up the wrong tree

I think Cleverly Pogba Tunni they will marshall the midfield just fine – I have no doubts about it so I believe and have done so for a player that and for now as daft as it sounds central midfield isn’t the issue.

I think the issue and it has been is replacing Giggs – He’s still got it in him but like everyone before him his sunset is coming up.

Where is that player that will take over from Giggs?

That is the question that bothers me – before we had Ronaldo and he was the one – but he went so now we have to find that extra special person that can do that extra special thing – and I’m talking about players like Giggs/Ronaldo because they are one offs,

I have no qualms about Ronaldo leaving he’s gone he’s not a United player – I know that Morrison is highly spoken off – if he could just put a calm head on that temper and attitude of his maybe everything will just slot into place.

Whatever happens it will always be interesting following the Theatre of Dreams OT Manchester United

    19 and out

  171. MG says:

    Sorry Rephrase:

I think Cleverly Pogba Tunni they will marshall the midfield just fine – I have no doubts about it so I believe and have done so for a while and as daft as it sounds central midfield isn’t the issue.

    19 and one more time – out…

  172. Sparkz says:

Giggsy gives us a natural left foot on the left wing, which is a bit rare.

And in the middle of the park, he gives us (in 20-30 minute bursts) the ability to provide some spark, dribbling and penetration down the CENTRE. If he was 10 years younger he’d be a dream.

As it is, he can’t last more than short bursts. But I genuinely believe Cleverley can give us a similar approach from the middle of the park, likewise Ravel.

  173. Moses says:

Seen the rerun of Chicharitos offside “goal” now and he was clearly offside already when the pass was played in and then Carrick looks like he might have touched it on the way which definitely made Chicharito stand offside.

I don’t know if the linesman would have raised his flag hadn’t Carrick touched it on but I suspect he would have because Chicharito clearly felt he was offside and the crowd seemed to notice the offside early on.

  174. RedKamer says:

Too many misses today. In the hope that this leads to improved performances in the games to come. But seriously, we should have won this game -with or without the officials’ mistake – if the players had taken the chances we had.

  175. Mikekelly12 says:

Just flicking through the latest posts. So glad some level headed fans have arrived and these fucking spoilt cunts who think if United don’t win we’re shit and the season is over have fucked off. Way past their bedtime I guess. United is more than a dodgy linesmans decision! Learn a bit of history and come back when you know what being a red is all about. Your life will be richer for the experience!!

  176. JC says:

Moses – I’ve watched the replay many times and in my eyes he appears even when the 1st ball is played. The touch by Carrick is what puts him offside IMO. That said that call along with plenty of fouls inside the box such as the ducking under/cutting out the feet of Vidic should have given the referee a clear opportunity to even the pens up and would have been much less controversial than that crap excuse for a pen on B’arf

  177. JC says:

OK enough pissing and moaning about the penalty and offsides, let’s try a different angle… I honestly can’t believe Fucking Danny Simpson cost us the game. If he sticks his left foot out on the line like that 100 times we score probably 99 of them. That should have won us the game, bad luck that and about 10 other times in the final 10 minutes.

  178. StatesideAussie says:

Denton … the issue of giving benefit of the doubt to the attacking team, re offside, is one of those murky little “details” that FIFA (or IFAB) ought to clarify. For the record, the official laws make no mention of this. However, during training (and subsequently, in technical advisories), referees (linesmen) are told not to raise their flags for offside unless they are certain the player is offside. In other words, they should not guess. (According to my son, who just completed his ref’s certificate, his instructor, who is a former international referee with world cup experience, told them, “if it’s close, you should favor the attacking team”.)

In practice, however, I very rarely see this, at any level of the sport. Indeed, based on actual observation of decisions, I would say benefit of the doubt nearly always goes to the defending team.

A few years ago, in a paper published in the British Medical Journal, a Spanish researcher proved that the physiology of the human eye makes it impossible to judge offside acurately, even under favorable conditions. For those who are interested:

This is the original BMJ article:

    There are some corrections/clarifications here:

The article’s findings are summarized in this Bloomberg story, which actually refers to our very own Paul Scholes as an example. As ROM readers may remember, in the 2004 CL, United were eliminated by the eventual winners, Porto, after a Scholes goal was incorrectly disallowed for offisde:

Shittay are struggling in Europe, there will be huge pressure on them to win at Anfield, I think they may well drop points, my bet is a draw. MARK MY WORDS RIGHT NOW, CITTAY WILL DROP POINTS.

CHINS UP. I was happier with this performance, Rio, Vida, Evra, Fabio and Carrick were great. Giggs some great runs. Our wing and forwards did not really get that into the game, Welbeck’s height and general link play may have worked better if he was fit.

We do need a Giggs replacement on the LW – Young needs back up in any event. With our first choice defence and Carrick on form we have a solid base but we struggled against their big tall defenders.

  180. KingOfStretfordEnd says:

Atrocious decision, plenty of bad luck. But i’d think we’re improving. And to think my happiness over the weekend lies in liverpool’s hands? Revolting.

I’d just like to say. How many games have passed? 13. How many games are there in total? That’s 1/3 into the season and i see some poor attitude amongst fans. Please, i’d think Blackburn fans would have more believe and support for their team at the moment compared to some United fans here. Why are we so spoilt?

sorry to say this but i haven’t seen rooney improving lately.know he is our proven player.i dont know if he was playing on midfield yesterday but it seemed so.he was poor in his distribution which was the main reason putting him at the center.his movement seemed casual to me.he was very frustrated at times.his qualities as a striker gets hindered by his new role.and in every game we seem to rely on fast interchanging play 1-2 passes which dont seem to work out at times as players often get their passes wrong and the receiver often get their position wrong.would it work good if we can alter the course of the game by holding on to the ball and finding spaces and stretching the play.i think berbatov and chicharito partnership can do well on that system.

    just a thought..

  183. Balaji Sivaraman says:

    Good Morning ROM!

Giles @ 23:45, Finally, the old guard shows up to make a lot of sense. Exactly what I was trying to say after the last two matches, not as articualtely of course. The results will start flowing sooner rather than later if we can keep up the performances we’ve shown in the past two games. In both games, we saw some really fluid, attacking football only let down by the quality of the final ball and the finishing. Once that gets going – again, it will happen sooner – we should start seeing the football flowing and the results popping up. Not surprisingly, this usually happens right from the holiday period.

I was also surprised to see so many people throwing in the towel. These people would not have probably done the same if the opposition were Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal. What about City convinces them that they won’t drop points I really don’t know? If all their predecessors haven’t been able to maintain the blistering form over 38 games, waht makes you think City will be able to do that. If, after 38 games, City do maintain their performances and win the title, then fair play to them. But they’re an unknown quantity over a complete season as of now and we’ve still have more than 20 games to go, so no point in handing them the title right now.

  184. NotoriousRedDevil says:

@ Balaji – What about City convinces them that they won’t drop points I really don’t know?

The answer to that is they are gutless cowards who want to demoralise the rest of us so we can keep them company in the doldrums. They can all kiss my arse.

Fully aware we can’t win the league every season but to throw in the towel and to go on a crusade to get everyone else on here to do the same just isn’t on. Take your negativity in that regard elsewhere. Plenty of time to go in all 4 competitions. If we don’t win the league this year I sincerely hope these miscreants can fuck off and go support someone else and leave us proper supporters to it.

  185. Giggs12Gerrard0 says:

Too many fans taking the moral high ground on here. Yes we are spoilt as we are Manchester united and rightly or not we want to see us improve. Yes we have looked aclot better this last week yet we have drawn to at home. We are a good side playing well but we have nit hit top gear yet and its the end of November. I have no defeatist attitude as the league is far from over but anyone honestly say our current side / form challenge in Europe? The answer is no. In losing Ronnie, scholes, hargreaves, Neville, even the cunt tevez from 2008 when we pissed on everyone what have we replaced with?

  186. Giggs12Gerrard0 says:

We play villa, wolves, qpr, Wigan, Blackburn so great opportunity to turn it around. As Giles said I have been impressed by our attacking threat the last two games but I want to see tony v providing for roo and the pea again like last year. A major positive is Carrick and I hope the return of clev will resolve the midfield situation. Giggs played well yesterday and is a class act but we need more in the centre Giggs can’t own games week in week out.

  187. RedHound says:

To add to my long list of positives form the Obertan thread, it was also great to see Chica attempting to score from range and almost pulling it off, he also keeps possession better nowadays. granted he missed a truckload of chances yesterday, but anyone mentioning second season syndrome is utterly deluded. Chicharito will infact score more goals this season. I actually think Chica can be a 20 goals-or-more striker each season,he’s that good.

  188. TonyBee says:

Fergie could face censure over linesman blast

THIS. FUCKING THIS. It highlights everything you need to know about the dictatorial nature of the mother-freaking Football Association. Any kid should tell you that the decision was beyond a joke. Everybody has a right to question whether the linesman’s eyesight was fine and the right to question why the referee did not over-rule him after having first given a corner. Instead of investigating the quality of their officiating, they are looking to further impose bans on Sir Alex for his outburst. The Football Association – and other football organizations – are proving to be as bad as the Nazis and the Fascists ever were. Fuck me, this kind of idiocy and hypocrisy pisses me off even more than the actual decisions. Somebody should bomb the F.A., FIFA and UEFA offices for us to be rid of this madness.

  198. CedarsDevil says:

    Balaji

No need to bomb them buddy (Love the idea though) Just put me in a room with Bernstein, Blatter and Platini……

  199. James21 says:

    Morning Reds
Got to say I’m also over the dropped points and the costly ref/linesman decisions now. There was alot of good football played yesterday from Utd and we kept Newcastle out. De Gea made some fantastic saves and is showing that he is Top class without a doubt. I always remember Cassilas at Madrid being slated for his mistakes when he first broke into the team but you only have to look at his progression over the years to see he’s become a top keeper.

Rooney was a little quiet yesterday and we need him to again become our Match winner. We looked well organised and Carrick again had a good game. It showed SAF was happy how the team was performing as he never really looked like he had to change it till late on. We had good chances to win it throughout the game but for a good goalkeeping performance from Krull and good defending, most other teams would have crumbled under that pressure.

Chicharito played very well and caused Newcastle alot of problems, should have had 2 goals but for Burnstiens whores and anyone who slates him is a Pratt . There is not alot wrong with the team we have and if not for Monsoons Billions Shitty would be Mid Table and Utd would be top at this stage. I have to agree that Utd can not compete with Shitty in the transfer market but no team can, not even Chelscum. If Shitty want a player they’ll get him, whatever the cost.

I don’t like the fans being slated and this isn’t aimed at everyone on here but its easy to sit behind a TV or Computor and slag the fans off. I personally never come back from a game without a dry Horse throat and the fans around me are superb so 10/10. I do agree however that some fans are daytrippers and they do sit there quiet but again they’re doing no harm. The fans that do piss me off are the ones who shout ‘Sit Down’ at those fans who want to jump up and sing, these so called fans should just pack in and watch it at home. We’re lucky in East stand, most of the seats are season tickets so we rarely get it, and if we do we just sing ‘Stand up for the Champions’. The term Prawn sandwiches was aimed at the Corporate section and the corporate section only and as Utd fans we shouldn’t aim it at our fans.

There are some fantastic posters on here and you know who you are, it certainly makes me want to keep popping in. There are some blikered dicks as well who have only seen Utd win year after year. I’m lucky to have supported Utd for 38 years (From Birth) and have seen the bad years this club has gone through. I’m amongst those fans who can really apreciate how far this club has come on and feel honoured to watch the likes of Rooney and the rest of the team. FFS I’ve seen Paddy Roach and Ashley Grimes play :( . The 90′s fans are spoilt so count yourselves very lucky at what you’ve seen and what you have.
Keep the Faith in SAF and our Team. He/They will deliver the goods.

How can they slag the fans at the ground with the shit they come out with on here?!

  207. Balaji Sivaraman says:

@Cedars, Now here’s an image for you: Cedars and TonyBee rounding up the usual suspects of Blatter, Platini and Bernstein and doing the Good Cop/Bad Cop routine. You’re the good cop and Tony’s the bad one. Fuck, that would be some interrogation. The trio would probably soil their pants.

  208. NotoriousRedDevil says:

@ james21 – Cracking post mate, my sentiments exactly. Its usually a decent atmosphere behind either goal. I just wish that could be transferred to the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand (gives me goosebumps typing that). The further back you go in Tier 3 the better the atmosphere, from my few experiences in Tier 1 or 2 its a morgue often with away fans which the stewards do fuck all about. If that stand could find their voices it would be frightening. Even on electric atmospheres such as chelski at home last season I felt it was the usual sections making the noise with the rest of it filled by smatterings scattered every where else.

@ Giggs12Gerrard0 – Agree with you about centre mid. What can we do? I was positive Fergie would sign someone there this summer and made the statement over a year ago saying if he doesn’t I’d be seriously pissed off. When transfer window shut, I sulked for ages despite Cleverly still being fit then. We allwant improvement but we’re stuck with what we have until next season.

@Balaji -as soon as Fergie mentioned the linesman and being involved in another game I feared the worst. Lets just hope its The Telegraph stirring the pot without any foundation. Read some of the comments on there and opposition fans still feel thats the first penalty we’ve conceded at home in years. The vermin have had more penalties than us at OT in the last 10 years for fucks sake.

  209. CedarsDevil says:

Just sent a good luck text to me nephew who lives and works in Sheffield, he is a Liverpool die hard, I cannot believe I did that! hahaha

  210. mikekelly12 says:

If the linesmen yesterday had been given their roles on the opposite sides of the pitch yesterday, we’d be 2 points behind City right now. How can an off the field decision like that impact on points?! Joke!! We did everything we needed to do yesterday to get the 3 points but because someone didn’t do their job right we are deducted 2 points. Why has this cunt not come out and appologised? I know it wouldn’t make any difference but I just picture him at home flicking through his sunday papers with a smirk on his face thinking “Give a fuck!”

    Sorry…having a Linesman meltdown!

    Mike

    Hahaha great rant

  212. James21 says:

Yes mate decisions like that really hurt. I didn’t have the luxury of seeing the replays and being in East Tier 2 the view was from afar. All the fans round me went apeshit but I can honestly say I didn’t see it, was probably in Rendition and not paying attention. Only when I saw it on MOTD did the pain hit home. As for the Chicarito disallowed goal again I could at the time only take the decision of the linesman to be true. I can’t dwell on the poor decisions as I get too emotional and tend to loose it a bit. Not obviousely over it as such maybe just living with it.

    Soren/ Cedars
I watched the link and now feel more emotional. I was never blessed to actually see Goerge Best play and feel for those who did witness his blessing more than those that didn’t. I have spoken to my Dad about Utd through the years about certain players and teams and the thing that really hits home is the Babes, he still feels the loss. He told me he cried for days and said to me just imagine Beckham, Scholes ,The Nevilles, Butt ,Giggs, Bruce, Irwin and Pallister etc all of a sudden tradgically gone. I couldn’t imagine it as it never happened. But I could still see the pain in his eyes. He told me Goerge Best was nothing like you’ve ever seen on a football pitch. He was totally amazing and rival fans turned up just to see him play football.

    Cedars/ MikeKelly
I have done work for Mick Quinn as he ownes/rents a stable in Newmarket nr to where I live. He’s alright really a little bit miserable tho and certainly doesn’t know how to brew up for his tradesmen. His wife is so down to earth and his daughter is adorable who likes to pull stanley knives out of my tool box at every opportunity. :) I can pass on your regards if I go back there. :D I always thought he was Everton but he’s not. He gave me a dirty look when I told him I was UTD. :D Fat scouse Cunt. :)

  213. Giles Oakley says:

Thanks for kind comments folks but remember when discussing paternity, we’re all God’s chillen.

As someone said, I shouted myself ‘horse’ yesterday, delighted that I can still pitch a decent boo at a ref from 150 meters and hit the target, despite my TB / asthma-ravaged lungs (Paul Scholes and I have SO much in common – apart from the ginger pubes of course).

On a serious point, I thought Giggsy was magnificent at times yesterday. In the second half I’m sure he inspired Young to ‘man up’ a bit, showing how to run at defenders and beat them, not just stop and lay the ball off every time he gets it under pressure. Giggs in full flow is a truly magnificent sight and we’re all privileged to have seen him for so many trophy-laden years and we should treasure his presence while we can. It’s not going to last much longer. One bad tackle could bring the end of his magnificent career in an instant, so make the most of it now, and store up the memories to bore your grandchillen with in 50 years time.

I agree I’m going to get East stand to chant ‘SAF stand give us a song’ at the Wolves game.
I hated sitting in North SAF Stand. The noise would be amazing. I’ve sat in Tier 3 twice and that was pretty good. There is a problem with the way the sound carries at OT and it only becomes apparent when your at the ground.
Down in the Quadrent Below right to us sits/stands Pete Boyle. He’s amazing and we do try and join in with him at every oppotunity but again sometimes we can’t pick out what he’s singing/ chanting.
The Stewards have been off our case of late so weather they have been told to lay off or tone it down I’m not sure.

  215. Dandivine7 says:

Goodafternoon, Yes the linesman gave the wrong call like the one two years ago, however, We have to start converting chances too. Even Real and Barca do get dodgy offside decisions against them too but it goes unnoticed due to the fact that They take their chances. Remember beating Arsenal despite a very soft penalty being awarded against United? That is what should have happened yesterday.

  216. RedHound says:

Some interesting ways Clubs influence referees as revealed by Graham Poll.

    -Mourinho at Chelsea.
Jose Mourinho, after joining Chelsea, invited me to the training ground to speak to his team. He introduced me as ‘the No 1 referee, not just in England but in Europe’ (I had refereed his Porto team twice and they had won both home games). The next weekend I refereed his first league match, at home to Manchester United. Chelsea won 1-0 and he asked me if there was anything I needed. I said, tongue in cheek, that the referees’ dressing room was not up to much. When I returned in the October it had been fully refurbished, flat-screen TV, freshly tiled new showers and complimentary expensive toiletries.

    -Know the ref’s family
At one major European club they provide replica shirts in the correct sizes for all of the match officials’ children — just a friendly, hospitable gesture, of course.

    -Watch out for Real…
Real Madrid always present their referee with a beautiful watch after every game — a memento with a discreet Real Madrid crest on it, so you remember where it came from. The Spanish federation do the same after an international game, where a lady waits for the officials to change before making the presentation.

    - Don’t mess with the biggest teams.
One referee was officiating in Turin and sent two Juventus players off. Not just any players but Edgar Davids and Zinedine Zidane! As he went up the tunnel the club president approached him and told him that not only would he never referee his club again but that he would never referee in Italy again.

    -Dinner is served
We were once promised a lavish post-match feast, until the home team lost and we were taken to a grubby taverna, instead.

    -Take the museum tour
The most successful club in European club history (Real Madrid) always invite you to take the museum tour. A nice gesture which leaves you in no doubt as to how big and powerful they are

Rare insight to Fergie’s 11 for Crystal Palace, i think he’s had this one in mind for a while now. As usual its ifs, maybe’s with the youngsters and from an interview perspective i get it, but i do hop we get to see the more promising youngsters having a go at it.. Much rather see Pogba and Morrison than Diouf and Macheda. Heck no reason all 4 can’t start anyway. With slightly more experience players albeit “the crazy pair” – Da Silva twins and Smalling, it’d be interesting to see who he goes with. I accused Fergie of giving in to fans service with a couple of transfers, i pray he does give in and fits in our young hopefuls to give them a real taste. Well at least a taste of what their contemporaries are getting

  219. James21 says:

    @Dandevine7
I think yesterday showed why Utd are on the up again. If not for Krull it would have been 4- 5. Shitty beat them with 2 pens lets not forget. They look a fair side and SAF only had praise for pardew in his programme notes. Even if shitty beat Liverepool today I will not concede the league title. I think their overconfidence will undo them. As for Real and Barca theres not much else in that league to worry them. Put them in the Premier league and see what happens to them.

My God Giles, Giggs put it on yesterday with those runs between defenders. Surprised there’s little gushing about it especially from outspoken crew about creativity from midfield. I thought he was amazing. If Roo’s head had been in the game more.I found my self saying to Young “watch and learn” never a better player to ply your trade with. Hell Rooney should pay a bit more attention himself

James21 Hi! I agree, our team is on the up, just applying the finishing touch is just what I’m after. My mention of Real and Barca has nothing to do with being in “awe” of them, just pointing out that They put their chances away.

    Gary Speed dead. wtf ???

  225. Dandivine7 says:

Gary Speed dead? Terrible news. May GOD Strengthen His Family!

  226. SINGH7 says:

Tragic news indeed he may have been a Leeds player but he was a good pro and not too older than our gIGGSY..

  227. NotoriousRedDevil says:

The thing about Ashley Young is that he has the ability but is lacking in the brain department which will come.

@ james21. I live in hope that when people purchase their tickets and see that they are sitting in the Sir Alex Ferguson stand it will inspire them to use their vocal chords. If that stand was in full voice it would not only scare the shit out of the opposition but would shut up most of the opposition fans as well. Have to agree about how the sound carries many a time we’ve finished a chant and another part of the ground is only half way through it. One day this will happen,

tragic news about gary speed…on the point of fans and being quiet did anyone else hear a thing from the emirates yesterday?
it may be quiet at old trafford sometimes but at least we’re not as bad as that lot

  232. Balaji Sivaraman says:

WTF???? Gary Speed. Absolutely shocked. May his soul rest in peace. :(

slim and Giles, Absolutely agree regarding Giggsy. I was screaming at my TV set for Young to learn from him. Fuck, the man is 38 and is beating players almost half his age with ease. It was absolutely awesome to watch. I think the injury and the layoff has been a huge confidence knock on Young. He isn’t playing like he was in the early part of the season and the same goes for the rest of the team. He should soon find it back though.

  233. RedHound says:

    yep, apparently hung himself.

Keep the Faith in SAF and our Team. He/They will deliver the goods”

Well said. Last time I looked the calendar said November not May. Not being complacent it’s just that there’s a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season . We’ve been there before. City haven’t. I’m not convinced City have got the staying power. On paper they do have a seriously good squad but, as their exploits in Europe illustrate, having strength on paper isn’t always enough. Experience counts.

I don’t like slagging ex-United players much but yes Paddy Roche was seriously duff. Ashley G just seemed, well, pretty ordinary. Duff players tend to fade from memory, which is fair do’s all round. However, in addition to Roche, the worst players I can remember seeing in a United shirt are Ian Ure and ironically Mike Phelan…

Anyway, RIP Gary Speed. Sad news.

RIP Georgie Best. Your legend lives on.

Like Mike said, such incidents do put things in perspective

Condolences to his family especially his kids.

  252. denton davey says:

GilesOakley @ 11:58: “Giggsy was magnificent at times yesterday.”

He might be lacking killer-pace but his close control and vision are still astonishing. Of course, he’s inconsistent – he always was “magnificent at times”.

No player is “magnificent” all the time – even Messi was contained/coralled yesterday and he’s the best I’ve seen since Georgie Best was in his pomp.

  253. Fred says:

Wayne – you can’t help the way your feel but you can show a bit of class and keep your distasteful comments to yourself, can’t you?

  254. CedarsDevil says:

    wayne

As I said you make a good point my friend, personally I do not like to judge people under such circumstances…… My thoughts are with his family

  255. NotoriousRedDevil says:

@ denton – I don’t have it backwards at all. His decision making is bad a times, but he’s clearly capable of beating players, putting excellent crosses in and scoring goals as well. He’s demonstrated all three in his time here albeit not so consistently after he picked up his knock. He’s already got himself a pretty important goal, because without that we would be in the Europa League right now. He isn’t used to getting all those chances when he was playing for that shit team in Birmingham.

Jumping on a players back 3 months into his United career is really going to work wonders isn’t it? Not everyone can hit the ground running like Tony V who can do all that Young can do except use his left peg which makes him largely ineffectual against top sides (See Barcelona in May or from what I’ve been told by my pals Benfica midweek).

  256. Redbilly says:

It’s a glitch and goes to prove- though we didn’t need additional proof- that decisions do go against united at OT. If they played the whole of the second half like the last 20 minutes the mistake would not be a problem as a second or even third goal would have secured it. After the wastelands goal fest it’s important to remember how well lads have performed. They will bounce back as usual. It’s worrying for all teams such decisions can stand.

  257. CedarsDevil says:

Let’s not turn this tragic bit of news into an argument here, please

  261. wayne says:

@Cedars nothing to do with feeling sorry for his family mate, anyway won’t bring it up again.

  262. MG says:

    Robert Enke too

If we go back our very own George Best – Sir Booby Charlton now always recounts why he or the club didn’t do so more to help him beat his drinking problem – because ultimately it’s a mental affliction why one cannot stop feeling a certain way to carry on doing a certain thing.

Who knows what was in Gary Speeds head and why it was there – Gary Neville has just said that football isn’t important you know – and he’s right – I know that it is very emotional and yesterday proved it – but our definition of loss through the Babes should ultimately teach us better that life is more important than a game – all be it a game we love dearly and a club we love with a lot more than just heart.

    19

  263. bobbycharlie1968 says:

I ranted on the previous thread yesterday about this decision at length, but the news this morning puts it all in perspective. Nev said on Sky “we think football is important, but it’s not really”. I never seriously liked or disliked Gary Speed, but you have to acknowledge someone who was universally respected by his fellow professionals and seemed a genuinely nice family man. It shows depression shouldn’t be underestimated, on the surface he had everything he wanted or needed, but clearly there were some deeper lying issues. Still fuming about the decision and the result yesterday, football is probably the biggest facet of my life, but moments like this help me realise it’s still just a game. R.I.P Gary Speed.

  264. Gorse Hill Red says:

Shocking news. You would think the man had everything. Will be interesting the hear the reasons for his suicide.

  265. Dandivine7 says:

The ‘privileged life’ is not about the money, fame and wealth one enjoys. It is a life free from the travail of the soul. Just like CEDARS said no one knows what He was going through privately. Remember “WHAT SHALL IT PROFIT A MAN TO GAIN THE WHOLE WORLD BUT LOSES HIS OWN SOUL”

I can’t speculate what he was going through or whether he suffered from depression but if you do, it’s a serious, mental illness that you don’t just turn off like a fucking tap. People can get so messed up they think everyone would better off without them.

I’m not saying that applied to Speed but your comment suggests you lack compassion and understanding. Some people live a life where the only light is death. That’s the opposite to normal life and can’t be judged in such black and white terms like “have no respect for people who commit suicide, compared to most he had a privileged life it’s the cowards way out”.

  271. Gary says:

    @Wayne

You really should keep such inappropriate comments to yourself. I for one found it extremely insulting and distasteful. I just heard Clayton Blackmore on SSN and when he broke down it genuinely brought tears to my eyes. It’s incredibly sad, it’s not the first example of someone who seems on the outside to have everything in place but deep down they’re still a human being at the end of the day and can suffer from loneliness. Gary Speed in no way a coward in my eyes, it’s just incredibly sad.

Im not going to hop on your back or chastise you for your comments, nor call you an arsehole. You have to be careful with comments on here because it has turned from a light hearted football fan blog to a culture leeching candy arse moral fag roody poo forum for a handfull of continual drival posters in love with each other and the sound of their own voices whilst reading others crap posts.
If indeed it is suicide, as I have not seen any confirmation or press release stating the fact, it is extremely sad. . I presume wayne you havent many people close to you (that you know about) that suffer from severe depression. When I was younger I couldnt for the life of me believe that people could just be upset for no good reason and that those that moped about were just attention seekers and sados. That was untill I became a depressive, not formely diagnosed but with Schizoid and Paranoid tendencies I just thought I was cautious and anti social (or should I say – not that bothered about others feelings). I dont have thoughts of suicide but I have thoughts of commiting mass genocide or atleast plans of small scale slaughters as I certaininly believe that if its my time to go out then Im going to take as many of the fucking irrelevants from this world with me as I can. And I suppose I have little fear of dying or ending up in gaol so there is a “suicide” element in that. As I said I wont criticise you for your opinion as I strongly believe in free speech but would just like to alert you of the fact that mental illness or “mental strangeness” is certainly prevelent. Suicide to these people isnt neccessarily the will or desire to end their lives rather than the lack of desire to stay alive and keep going. They ammount to the same thing but are from the different perspective.

  287. Redbilly says:

Just Heard the News….my heart sank, Gary Speed was a respected man. He may not have been a superstar like Giggs but many acknowledged how good he was at what he did. Terrible news, he seemed like a honest fella, he was taking Wales up and changing their losing mentality. He is a welsh legend and a genuine gentlemen according to his peers. One of the most brightest talents in welsh and british football, tragic. Wales had the right man in Speed, I hope Wales qualify for the World Cup in his memory and continue the Speed brand of football which was certainly different compared to past welsh managers.

His death has shocked many, may his family find peace. A true proffesional and a great role model to anybody in football.

Getting 3 points with boring football and now 1 point with Fergie being satisfied with the level and entertainment. From my side i will only give credit to Newcastle and of course bad bad luck with the pen which shouldn’t have prevented us from getting all 3 points anyway.

  300. StatesideAussie says:

I tried to add a post with some very interesting links to medical/scientific research that proves that the physiology of the human eye makes it impossible, in most cases, for an official to judge a close offside correctly. The post included some links which might be of interest to anyone who cares about this issue (and they include references to a disallowed goal by Scoles) but, due to the links, the post is “awaiting moderation”.

  301. Gary says:

Well this will be my last post on the subject of Gary Speed. I obviously didn’t know Gary Speed on a personal level or too much about his life which is why I find my own reaction to it a little strange. I feel so saddened by it, because like I said on the surface it appears he’s a man who had a lot to live for and feel proud of but ulitmately it would seem he suffered with depression. I have absoulutely no idea why I should share such information over a blog with strangers but having a family member who commited suicide makes this news all the more painful for me which is why I’m genuinely upset by it. Gary Speed never cried out for help publicly or went of the rails so it would lead one to think he was hiding his inner demons as best he could but so sadly they have got the better of him. It really does just put everything into prespective in terms of a football match. Life will go on but today I really couldn’t care less about the outcome of the Lpool and City match.

  302. Balaji Sivaraman says:

@Cedars, LOL! That is exactly what I thought when I read slim’s post.

@Stateside, I am sure you know that you can trick WordPress by adding some junk characters with the link or by removing certain key elements from the link. If you could do that and oblige so that we can read the links, I would appreciated it. God knows when Scott will find the free time to approve the comments and I hate to be kept waiting. :P

No Bellamy for the Scouse today, presumably he’s grieving for Gary Speed. Bellamy represented Liverpool’s best chance of getting anything from this game imho. Can’t see anything other than a City win now.

  308. Clint-iamyourpapii says:

    Former Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell said;

“Gary was developing a plan [at Wales]. The first few games they weren’t very good but he knew that. He was very excited about the players he had with Wales. He knew he could turn it around. They were playing some terrific stuff under Gary. He was a great raconteur. He was a first-class man and leaves behind such a legacy.”

That is all. Today we should celebrate the lives of those we have lost in sports and in our own lives.

  309. Redbilly says:

Cedars-, exactly. When you see these spirited underdogs playing the big league iit makes me happy knowing how excited their loyal fans must be. Beyond expectations. Must be a magical period not be a fan of a club

  310. MG says:

Well I think Gary has summed it up quite perfectly

The rest is just human emotion but if you are there in the heart of the storm reliving something that you understand then it comes to the rest of us to respect things that are out of our control.

At the end what matters as Gary said is that life goes on – you know we go on from yesterday and no matter what happens today we will still go on

  312. MG says:

As we carry on we’ll leave others behind that will go away from us. What will set us apart is remembering those that came before us and teaching those in front of us that this is a life to be celebrated.

It certainly does put things in perspective and its a sad fact that suicides amongst sports men seem to be on the increase. 3 very good NHL hockey men commited suicide during the off season all it seems due to depression. Outwardly keeping their “Inner demonds” to themselves whilst projecting a happy and contented face to the outside. The thing to acchieve here is breaking down the stigma of asking for help and making it known that even to those that feel they have it under control that the control can be only temporary.

Denton/Balaji, and anyone else interested in the offside rule… I tried to post these yesterday and they are “awaiting modification”, so trying to repost now with slightly modified links…

A few years ago, in a paper published in the British Medical Journal, a Spanish researcher proved that the physiology of the human eye makes it impossible to judge a close offside acurately, even under favorable conditions. For those who are interested:

This is the original BMJ article:

The article’s findings are summarized in this Bloomberg story, which actually refers to our very own Paul Scholes as an example. As ROM readers may remember, in the 2004 CL, United were eliminated by the eventual winners, Porto, after a Scholes goal was incorrectly disallowed for offisde:

Gary Speed was taking Wales in the right direction with 3 wins in a row for God knows how long. A young manager who could have been the Wales boss for quite sometime. RIP Gary Speed.

Anyhow on to the topic of this post. That clearly wasn’t a penalty but this is what happends with sitting on a 1-0 lead. All is takes is a deflected shot, a slip by a defender or goal keeper, or in this case a refereeing decision to go against you and you’re up against it trying to take the lead again.

In all honesty United should be smashing most teams by 2 or 3 goals and not being content with just a 1 goal lead otherwise their is a possibility of becoming unstuck as was the case yesterday. So it’s easy to blame the referee but I think sitting on a 1 goal lead also contributes to problems.

Curbishley ‘When Liverpool play the big boys they raise their game’

Ha? How can the bitters even be compared to Liverpool! What a joke

  328. Balaji Sivaraman says:

“Im not going to hop on your back or chastise you for your comments, nor call you an arsehole. You have to be careful with comments on here because it has turned from a light hearted football fan blog to a culture leeching candy arse moral fag roody poo forum for a handfull of continual drival posters in love with each other and the sound of their own voices whilst reading others crap posts.”

You know what pisses me off – lack of sensitivity. I personally have many antagonizing opinions against many of the cultures in this world including my own. As I am sure everybody does. They are all anybody has and you build your opinions on your likes and dislikes. Nobody can hold a grudge against anybody for thinking in some way. However, anybody can get pissed off when you choose to say it out loud. Freedom of Speech is a right only when the person in question uses his own discretionary powers to choose what to say and what not to say. If he/she doesn’t do it, then you are going to invariably offend people’s sensibilities. From what I’ve read, you don’t have a problem with offending people as long as you get to say anything. That is fine and I completely respect your opinion but don’t expect everyone to agree with you.

I go out of my way to make sure my posts don’t offend anybody in question. There are few times when I do get pissed off and go on a rant but it mostly has to do with United and football which, in my opinion, are the most trivial of things when compared to religion, politics, suicide, death, war and all other worldly things. For me, football is a hobby, one that I hold dearly above everything else, but still a hobby and arguing over it isn’t going to offend anybody. But arguing over those other topics and not using discretion is going to personally hurt some people, so I stay away from it.

And I also have to say this even if it is going to feel like poster-love to you: One of the reasons I personally admire Costas is his demeanor. He rarely says anything offensive against anybody. The trolls he usually ignores, the WUMs he laughs off and even when he argues, he does so by giving respect to the person on the other end of the screen. I just hope if everybody behaved like that, we’ll have great and respectful debates instead of people getting to say whatever they wish without respecting other people’s sensibilities.

Over and out and this will be my last post in this regard. Even this one I posted only because I couldn’t suppress it.

I do have a lack of sensitivity, thats always been my way. I dont mean to go out my way to offend but I also dont go out my way to repress my true thoughts. (which I must add probably differ from those that you actually feel I have). I believe in freedom of speech to its maximum as I believe only speech and talking things out can ever truely educate people and consol people of their differences. Quieting up or dumming down of an issue has, as history will tell us over and over again, only caused trouble.

Someone like Balotelli has no place on a football field, he would be more at home at a mental institution and I honestly mean that. I have not hated a player in my entire life more than I hate this sad excuse of a footballer.

  423. Fred DiBiase says:

  425. dannysoya says:

Aah, back to hating Scousers again. Henderson’s fucking shite.

  427. AlphaRS says:

    2 points dropped yesterday then…!

  428. orez says:

That was desk book game to stop forwards. Great game from dippers even though they had cunting passegners like downing and henderson. We are lucky we didn’t loose any ground but we should have gained some. Hopefully it will provide more confidence to other teams to get something out of shity.

P.S. I saw a very interesting statistic. Real has 34 and Barca has 28 with shity on 35 and us on 30. I just thought it was funny that after playing 13 games we acctually have more points then mighty barca.

  429. Jayesh says:

City are going down soon, don’t see them getting a result at the Bridge in 2 weeks if they continue this way.

  430. Fred DiBiase says:

It always was 2 points dropped, Alpha! It could have been two points gained on City though. :x

  431. Jayesh says:

Why do rivals only lose points when we do? :(

  432. FletchTHEMAN says:

That will do. 1-1 LFC v Cittay. Says it all that Cittays last sub Kolo Toure. Sums up “No Ambition” from them. But what a look from city when Balotelli gets straight red minutes after coming on. An what was that they he goes down the tunnel to get before coming on? Steroid Injections?

    Why always Me?!

  433. Costas says:

If City lost today, then we could say that this weekend worked to our advantage. However, they escaped with a draw from Anfield and maintained their 5 point lead. Linesman or not, we should have closed the gap to 3 this weekend. Now hopefully we will win at Villa (we seem to be more reliant on the road this season anyway) and put the ball back in their court.

Anyway, I won’t thank their scousers for doing their job. They are scum.

  434. slim says:

The only thing this match showed is that Anfield is a tough place to get a win

  435. Balaji Sivaraman says:

If anybody mentions Henderson in the same breadth as Cleverley, I am going to strangle them. This guys is a fucking joke. How he is so highly rated by many I will never know? Carroll = 35 million. I cannot stop myself from going like  each time I think about that.

On the other hand, full credit goes to Lucas. I was one of many who laughed at him a lot but he has become Liverpool’s key player and does the same job Carrick does for us. I am actually amazed at how much he has gotten better, so fair play to him. Right, that is enough scouse-praise for now.

  436. Fred DiBiase says:

orez – good point, especially when you consider that joke of a league they’re in. I think Real will win it this year.

Jayesh – I’ll be cheering on the mighty Blues from Stamford Bridge in that one. 8) Come on JT!

  437. Paul Parker says:

Well that was a festival of football, and I am a better person for watching it

Only caught second half tbf, but im convinced Suarez has been diving all game.

How many times does he need to throw himself down to get a card anyway?

Lol @ PC Plod escorting Balotelli off the pitch after the red card.
I feel so much safer now.

Carrol and Henderson – 50 odd million quid world beaters. Money well spent then hahaha.

No mention of Skirtel going down like a eager bitch, then? He’s a Golem looking fellow.

More importantly, a draw between these heavyweights of the game is fine, although even if City won all 3 points it means fuck all in November.

Wait till the Christmas fixtures kick in, we’ll see what the pretenders are made of.

Giles, your post after the draw yesterday was bang on. Finishing aside, we created chance after chance and really went for it. Like Rio said we could’ve been 5-6 up based on the opportunities we missed. Well said about Hernandez as well. As our target man he did miss a few, but that doesn’t take away from the points he’s already won us this season alone – It also doesn’t jade his next appearance.

If anything, our performance shows we’re improving. Vidic, Rio, Evra, Carrick and Giggs were all class, and Nani and Young created loads of chances as well. We can only get better.

  438. Clint-iamyourpapii says:

Thanks Lads, heard Henderspn & Carrol had a stinker !
Lionel Messi was quite bad to, got replaced by Eden Djeko….I saw the Bibotelli slip

After the equaliser I knew it was going to be a bore draw didn’t bother with the 2nd half, switched channels during ads but still couldn’t give a fuck….we dropped 2 important points at home POOR.

Ando to me is the same guy we bought all those years back  Nani on the other hand is in another league to the guy he was when he first joined.

I would say Cmon Ando – prove us wrong…but we’ll probably have to wait till next August to see him kick ball again. It is time to reinvest….one good signing and one rash decision buy should satisfy everybody ;) Lets Cabaye us a Martinez…not Roberto or Xavi but Javi 8)

  449. Balaji Sivaraman says:

@MG, That is great. Of course, Shay Given is one of those few good men left in the sport nowadays, but still fair play to him. People like him are what keep football from being over-run by cunts, divers, moaners and the rest of the filth.

  450. Fred DiBiase says:

Jayesh – indeed. :D If he’d kept that chump on the bench, Liverpool might have won. :(

  451. Paul Parker says:

Jesus Christ – just heard about Gary Speed.

Its really really fucking sad that he couldn’t see a way out of whatever he was going through. He doesn’t strike me as a man lacking family and friends so those around him must be distraught.

Im not the biggest Stan Collymore fan as some may know, but he was spot on for talking recently about depression in general and depression in the game in particular. You have to push through it.

Rest In Peace Gary Speed, only 42. Damn.

  452. Costas says:

    @MG

I was talking about our OT Santas, but once again you put things in perspective. :)

  453. Fred DiBiase says:

Given and Speed were teammates for five years – we are aware of this, yes?

  454. Jayesh says:

@Fred DiBiase: True, then again for that, Kenny would need some sense and if he had any, he wouldn’t have ended up at that dump in the first place, right? :P

  455. Sandeep1878 says:

Good evening Red Devils around the world..

  456. Fred DiBiase says:

One thing you can say about Kenny is that he gets his players fired up for these big games. I hope Liverpool can repeat that performance when they go to the Etihad Stadium.

I’ve read that Balotelli kicked the dressing room door in. What a retard he is. It’s about time other teams started getting in the faces of these bigheaded blues. We’ll see what they’re made of when the pressure is on, as it was at Anfield and in Naples.

  457. Fred DiBiase says:

    Good evening Sandeep. :)

Kenny Dalglish was quoted saying ‘Haha they wish!’.

  467. Fred DiBiase says:

    Why thank you, Balaji. ;)

  470. Costas says:

When we last won at Villa Park (in the league), Pique was still playing for us. Puts things in perspective doesn’t it? What a game that was though. Beat them 4-1 and Ronaldo wasn’t even playing. 8)

Fletcher said: “We’ve got quality midfield players and I don’t see what all the fuss is about.
“We have been successful with the midfield and the squad we’ve got.
“I’m not going to say it’s an insult for people to suggest we don’t have enough flair or creativity in midfield because they are entitled to their opinion and are going to say whatever they wish. We can’t control that.
“If we start thinking about that then it’s obviously going to affect us on the pitch.
“We’ve been at Manchester United long enough to realise that criticism is always going to be there. It’s part and parcel of the job.
“But we have got players who create in wide areas, in forward ones and in midfield as well.
“We’re fully confident in our abilities and what we bring to the team and what we’ve been doing at United for many years.”
He added: “You can’t replace Paul Scholes, no matter who you sign because he was that good.
“But there were times last season when Scholesy didn’t play and we still won the league and reached the Champions League final.
“People should look at that as well.”

    @Fred

The most nostalgic mention I can come up with is that Rio was the best defender in the world at the time. :(

City at the time where still the gift that kept on giving. They beat us twice, but they disgraced themselves as usual on the final day by losing 8-1 or something at Boro. Good times. :)

  476. Fred DiBiase says:

Very good times. :) Afonso Alves scored a hat-trick that day, adding to the two goals he scored against us. It was known at the time that Sven was going to be sacked. After the 8-1 defeat, City fans went nuts and started tearing up seats at the Riverside and throwing them onto the pitch. Little did any of us know that their despot owner, Dr. Toxin, was soon to sell the club to a Sheikh. :(

That Giggsy goal against Wigan is one of my favourite ever United moments. You just couldn’t have scripted it any better. 8)

It’s annoying how bad the commentary is in US. Those morons at FSC just said that it was United fault the newcastle result, cause ready “We gave them too many chances and DDG had too many saves” :) . I can’t fucking believe that none of the morons watched the game but they dare to make comments like this. I only remember DDG saving from Colochini shot and that’s it. I would have been fine if they said we wasted too many chances, but not such misinformed comments. Absolute disgrace. MOTM can be biased, but I had never heard such a drivel from them. Absolute disgrace.

  479. Fred DiBiase says:

So yeah, we haven’t won the league game at Villa Park for the past three seasons. We’d better put that right on Saturday, and in style! :)

  480. Fred DiBiase says:

RIP Gary lad. Decent bloke and top pro.

Well done the vermin. Battered them second half. That nutjob Balotelli is a digrace. Kicking doors. No respect for the manager or fuck all. Yet madeley defends him. Always playing with his hair the fucking ponce. Good to see that greedy cunt Nasri owned by Lucas who is a decent fucking player. Silva will be burnt out come feb. How arrogant are city. I detest them. Fuck off sky and souness licking their arses. Said they controlled game. Did they fuck. Tough games for them coming up. Aguero did fuck all again. Looks overweight. What are they feeding them in stockport. Chickens and steroids. Toure is a funny one. Only performs when he feels like it. Slobby bastard. They really have become the media darlings.

Funny fuck all mention of the appaling decision yesterday. Hhmm. Wonder why. Oh its because it was United and things even themselves out. Fuck off. If it were us that won the pen it would be on 24 hour loop on sky. Good save by Hart at end I forgot to say but bit of a camera save imo. Got his full hands to it not fingertips.

We will reel City in. Just a matter of time. They are an accident waiting to happen with cunt like Mario.

Was gobsmacked at sky sports news last night. “Crisis at Chelsea. What crisis? SUPER JOHN TERRY on the score sheet as Chelsea beat Wolves three nil“. Super John Terry. You couldn’t make it up.

  482. Costas says:

Lol, that comeback against Pool was awesome. And out of the 3 scorers, Owen is the only one playing for us now.

Thanks Balaji. Just one nitpick with the video. I know we ripped Spurs apart in that 2nd half, but we weren’t playing with an extra man (4-4-3 said the video)

    @Fred

Loved that Giggsy goal too. Good thing I wasn’t around ROM at the time, because I was convinced we would blow it. I was too afraid of Grant’s Chelsea.

  483. Costas says:

Plus, look at those fans invading the Villa Park pitch and hugging every red in sight. I wonder if Schmeichel got a hug. :P

  484. Fred DiBiase says:

Superb post from King Eric! Spot on about everything. :)

Wouldn’t surprise me if those cunts actually were on steroids tbh. I thought the same about Ancelotti’s Chelsea (who used to regularly run up 8-0 scorelines) and Benitez’s Liverpool of 08/09. No-one believes that it goes on in football though.

  487. Moses says:

Amazing that it feels like a relief to be “just” the same 5 points behind Siddy but it really does. I studied Adam during the Liverpool-City game and the man is overrated and afraid to go into tackles so I am glad we never signed him.

Our lads really must kick on now and stop giving points away in order to put pressure on Siddy and when you play first and fucks up it feels like you’ve won something when the side you chase fail to capitalise on it the day after.

Today though belonged to things outside of football after the death of Gary Speed who to me reminded me of a period in the league that was always fascinating and pulsating and full of glory for us United fans.

  488. Costas says:

Theres a new top 4 ,Utd are on their way down god they really are full of shit. I asked who the new top 4 are but got no reply. Funnily Enough.
We played well yesterday and I really think Utd are turning it on now ,Love De Gea he made some fantastic saves yesterday. As did Krull who kept them in the game.

  493. Moses says:

I happened to watch “The damned United” last night for the second time cause it was on some channel and so the news about Gary Speed today just felt weird. I know this will only make the bully boys on here go on about me being a Leeds fan which I am not and never will be but I do respect all footballers and people that work within the game.

Gary Speed never played for Man United but he was still part of an era that was a thrill to watch and that now feels like a time when real values were still in the game that are sadly gone now. I just wish we are told why he did what he did because otherwise the shock and speculation will linger on for all of us.

    Thanks for the memories Gary!

  494. Fred DiBiase says:

Costas – interesting. I never suspected that Arsenal team, but that’s only because the idea of a football team using performance-enhancing substances hadn’t occurred to me in those days. There was someone on here who used to suggest that Barca players are doped (I can’t recall who) and there have been allegations of that nature made elsewhere. Someone made a thread about it here: http://europeanboard.ephpbb.com/t23100-the-barcelona-doping-scandal

  495. Jeet says:

At the start of the match today, the commentator said, “There’s a real buzz today at Anfield. For my money the noise if even bigger than what it was for the Manchester United match, which has traditionally been the biggest rivalry.” WTF? What sort of comment is that? I couldn’t make out whether that was a dipper arse licker or a B3 (blue bum boy). In the end, I decided he was quite literally, just a fucking ABU…

  496. Moses says:

Even if doping is in football it does not affect the game as much as it affects other sports cause of the fact it is a team game and you cannot dope yourself into becoming a better technical player even though a player that uses it will get more muscles and can run more.

What makes football unique is that there are so many other things that decide the outcome so even if a player here and there use doping then the effect on the overall game is very much reduced.

Barca have had heath issues with players and one got cancer and that is why some believe they have used doping.

  497. Moses says:

Jeet// I heard that as well and the sad fact is that he was right because United-Liverpool is not the big game it used to be which is because most of us United fans treat it as just another game on the way to glory (hopefully).

Always been the case that the leading club in the land treats all games as important and that the other poor sides treat the big games like cup finals. I wish the cup final games never come back with regards to us United fans.

  498. James21 says:

Not bully boys Moses. You bring it onto yourself with your WUM posts. No red I know would even say half the things you come out with. If you don’t like it then don’t try and wind Utd fans up. Simples.

I liked the damned Utd and Cloughie was a Legend.
Theres only been nice words on here about the untimely death of Gary Speed. Pity those shitty fans couldn’t keep it shut

  499. Fred DiBiase says:

Jeet – what a ridiculous comment by that commentator. ABU indeed.

  500. Zibbie says:

Wow, still 5 point back. Cool.
So much MF talk, SAF attacks with width and forwards and late runners in the box. To win the CL he adapted to a 4-6 or some shit.
I was a Man Utd fan for 3 years with no PL title, since 4 of 5 and a off side call from 5 straight. He started retooling last year and still won the PL and runner-up in the CL. SAF will fight on all fronts and in the next 18 months, 3 windows 3 to 5 new players in 3 to 4 promoted to 1st team, two becoming regulars. In the next 6 months to 2 1/2 years these players are gone. Giggs, Berba, Owen, Rio, Evra, Park ect.

  501. Fred DiBiase says:

Moses – you can’t improve technical ability through doping but you can make your team superhumanly fitter, stronger and faster than the opposition and that’s a massive advantage.

  502. Moses says:

    James21//

So in short you admit that you bully boys cannot handle other views and opinions so I wonder what you vote for and what your political views are. I will speak my mind and I know what I talk about whenever I do discuss something, If that is too much for some then they must have some problems in life.

I heard City fans shouting as well at Anfailed today and I wonder what it was.

  503. James21 says:

Barry must inject his Fat Arse with steroids Daily. :)

  504. Jeet says:

@Moses: Yeah, I guess City are the leading club in the country by virtue of having won a record breaking 19th title last year…
I’m not saying that the Anfield crowd was not as loud as it was for the United match – could have been, as if I care a fiddler’s fuck. But to actually compare the noise level between 2 big games, and to allude causality to it, is in itself the calling card of a fuckwit commentator…

  505. Moses says:

    Fred DiBiase//

Yes, but if you think about it and the punishments that they risk when getting paid millions I very much doubt it is wide spread. I do however believe that Barca uses it and that UEFA backs it and knows full well cause there is one rule for them and another for the rest of us.

At the end of the day Barca have south american players that are no way spanish when you check the history and these are the people that Pinochet did not have enough time to deal with so they should count themselves lucky the little bastards.

Madrid people are white and Barcelona people are shite, simple as.

  506. James21 says:

You bully boys? I’m the least bully you’ll ever meet. I like banter and will stick up for Utd and Utd fans. You were trying to wind people up during Shittys game last week. I have an Uncle who tries exactly what you were doing so pls don’t act all innocent mate. I do like some of your posts but you really should reel it in a bit. Up to you tho.

  507. Costas says:

    @Fred

Thanks for the link. The guy certainly raises some interesting points. I’ve also wondered how come their players play so many games. Messi for example has been averaging 60+ games for the last 4 years. I don’t want to point fingers at anyone, but the way sports work today, there are very few athletes that would surprise me if I heard they used steroids or other substances. But we won’t know anytime soon. Lets see what kind of shape these players will be in 15-20 years from now. Doping tends to cause plenty of health issues down the road.

  508. Fred DiBiase says:

Let’s be honest guys, that offside call in the Chelsea game would have been irrelevant if we’d beaten stinkin’ Blackburn Rovers. :x :(

  509. Moses says:

Jeet// I like that commentator cause he has commented the majority of our games this season and espeically at OT and has always been doing it with style unlike others. If you wanna find ABU’s there are plenty others out there and none more so than that cunt Andy Townsend who managed to say that it was somehow a good day for City today but they didn’t take the chance to really pull away.

  510. Zibbie says:

Moses?????? WTF????? Madrid people are white and Barcelona people are shite, simple as.????????

  511. Fred DiBiase says:

Costas – no problem. Glad you found the link interesting. :)

  512. Moses says:

Saying what other people don’t wanna hear is part of life and those that cannot take it are weak people and I happen to know that most of our local fans are commies and I hate commies cause they are very narrow in their opinion and hate modern solutions and wanna crawl into the caves again with the muslims they defend.

Football is politics and kids and women should be barred from the games.

  513. Zibbie says:

Fred oh I agree still could or should have won it. BUT!!!!

  514. Moses says:

Barcelona should get their own country as they hate Spain and the king and yes they are short people from south american whose fathers and mothers slipped away from Pinochet and his lads.

  515. James21 says:

Moses. Lots of breaking news in spain that Barca lads received an unscheduled round of drugs controls.
    Somethings afoot there. Interesting.

Disagree that it dosen’t affect the game. Drugs in sport lead to faster recovery times on and off the pitch. The real evil is that youngsters feel presured to use as they see it is the only way to “keep up”. 6 foot lads with tiny feet just one clue. Lads coming back from injury in half the expected time as well. The real damage is at the kids level.

Balotelli could use some “anti” androgens though. Lad is a bit over the top. Just personal opinion.

  527. Fred DiBiase says:

I didn’t realise there had been any new evidence. While looking, I found out that former tennis champ Yannick Noah has upset a more than a few Spaniards with his comments on the subject this week:

    http://straightsets.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/11/22/nadal-is-angered-by-noah-comments-on-performance-enhancing-drugs/

“Noah, a Frenchman, wrote in France’s Le Monde newspaper that he believed Spanish athletes were cheating. “Today if you don’t have the magic potion, it’s hard to win. How can a nation dominate sport virtually overnight like this?””

    Pep was especially defensive:

“Pep Guardiola, coach of defending Spanish and European champions Barcelona, also sounded off about the 51-year-old Noah’s comments.

“This man can either show some proof or he can shut up,” Guardiola said Saturday.”

Woke up today to the news about Gary Speed- genuinely shocked me. He’s been part of the furniture for me, ever since I started watching football, he was always there (didn’t he clatter Keano in the 99 cup final lol?)….Newcastle, Bolton, Sheffield United….and then onto management, was doing a really good job with Wales recently as well.

Not only was he a top player, but seemed like a top bloke as well. RIP and condolences to his family.

As for today’s game…I said before I had no expectations from the Scousers, I remember how they didn’t turn up when we needed a favour vs Chelsea in 2010. Was pleasantly surprised I have to say (although there was still a Gerrard style back pass from Enrique in the first half!). Really wish we didn’t get mugged off by the linesman yesterday…but we need to keep winning our matches, City will slip up.

  533. CedarsDevil says:

Hello all, did you miss me? I know I missed you….muah

  534. Costas says:

Not only he clattered Keane in that cup final, but he was also the player that caused Neville the calf injury that set him back for well over a year in 2007. But despite all that, I could never be too mad at him. That was Speed’s style. Hard but fair. Unlike that twat De Jong. Still can’t wrap my head around this whole thing.

Fred james and slim. Cheers lads.

I mentioned Barca being on enhancing drugs a while back. No offence to Abidal but how can you be on your near death bed then twelve weeks later play in a fucking European Cup Final? Very odd. Talking of Barca was great seeing them get turned over last night. Messi is cuttng a tired and frustrated figure. Teams are finding them out. Keeping their shape and keeping it tight in the middle. They resorted to the wings and putting crosses in to five feet four players. The tide is turning. The fascists will turn them over next month. Messi has ONE goal away from home. I have a theory about him. Everyone says he will getbetter and better. Not so sure. With his growth injections and continual playing he could be fucked by his mid twenties. I mean for fuck sake does Pep EVER rest him? Talk about over reliance on one player. Gerry Armstrong must have been gutted last night the arse licking cunt. Ronnie gets fuck all praise despite him outshining that little prick at present. Oh and a shameless dive by Busquets late on. Best club side ever my arse. Never mind the Milan and Juve sides our 94 and 99 teams would beat these cunts through sheer skill, guts power and never say die attitude. As Fergie said teams have 4 year cycles and theirs could be ending. Not saying they are shit but two year ago they would have battered fifteenth place Getafe. They look drained and it isn’t going to get any easier. Oh and that Sanchez that some were clamouring for is fucking gash. Fuck off Barca.

Moses. What a ludicrous question. I would take Madrid win the league all day long and hope they do. Why would them winning La Liga be of any concern to United? Another thing. Assuming we get through fuck it. Bring Barca on over two legs.

  541. CedarsDevil says:

  547. Fred DiBiase says:

Here is Gary Speed on Football Focus yesterday, seemingly fine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OIg_rIj_vM

Lawrenson said on MotD2 that Speed seemed absolutely fine and there was no indication that anything was troubling him. The Football Focus presenter said similar things when he was on the news today.

Police say there were no suspicious circumstances but I’d call it very suspicious that a man is absolutely fine one day and then takes his own life the next. :?

You don’t just suddenly decide to kill yourself on a whim. If Speed was depressed to the point of being suicidal, how could he have been doing such a good job with Wales, and how could he bring himself to show up on some poxy little show like Football Focus if he seriously depressed and considering suicide? It just doesn’t add up.

    Anyway, RIP Gary Speed :(

  548. CedarsDevil says:

Cedars how are you buddy? Had a bit of a ROM break to be honest pal – just with the posting anyway. I still read the posts and comments…good to see KE contributing again the place was quiet without him. How’s the meds

I suffer from depression mate. Its an odd thing and personally I kind of like it in a weird way. It can just sweep across you. A bit like the nicotin rush from your first smoke in the morning. You can actually feel meloncoly rush over you like getting a cold rush walking through a haunted house. Ive been in situations where Im on top of the world only to turn and feel indifferent like someone flicked a switch. Its odd. Im a social cheerful person and successful with what I do, doesnt stop me from being a downer, loner and general bitchy individual. Im also the light at the party and have hundreds of friends.

  552. Rai says:

Hope they’re not taking it outta you too much

It was to do with Terry being on 4 yellow cards and didnt want to miss next weeks trip to Newcastle so he went up to take a throw in by their corner flag and took a good minute pretending to want to take it and got carded for time wasting. So instead he misses the carling cup clash instead freeing him for next weekend. After he got carded he dropped the ball for someone else to take it and you could see in his shifty fucking eyes what he was doing the cheeting chav.

  555. CedarsDevil says:

    Rai

A true blessing they are indeed, really chuffed for you……. As for my meds, they’re totally fucking me over, not complaining mind you… They keep the pain away and give me a high that no illegal drug can! hahaha

  559. CedarsDevil says:

And to think that Robbo was one day captain of England, how can you put a racist, hateful, idiot cunt of all cunts like Terry in the same bracket is a disaster for the history books

  564. James21 says:

John Terry is Captain Leader Legend. The British bulldog. A true Proffesional. A piller of the community. I get really offended tho when they say Chelsea Defender Terry in Race storm. The Cunt hasn’t defended for two years.

  565. Paul Parker says:

Watching Sky and shock fucking horror, Balotelli has kicked an innocent door.

Talk about BOLLOCKS, so I guess our lads walked off at 6-1 smiling & singing hymns then? I mean, its not like Alex has been throwing water bottles and kicking boots for years is it?

BUT STOP THE FUCKING PRESS !!!! BALOTELLI KICKED A DOOR LADIES AND GENTS !!!!

Whats got my goat is, why is he making the headlines along with Gary Speed? I’ll tell you why – because dumb fucks will buy newspapers just to read and vent about him. Call the ABU’s what you want but they ain’t fucking stupid are they? Even the softest Balotelli red card will splash the back pages because theres a big healthy market for bashing him. He sells papers and advertising space, bottomline. Those cards weren’t the biggest controversy of the weekend or even today FFS, but it will still be reported Monday morning as another chapter in the “troubled” player’s “chequered history”.

What fucking history? He’s hardly under investigation like your Super England Captain is he?

Cunts. How can the press harass him for 2 minor fouls and a kicked door, but in the next breath talk about Gary Speed and “the pressures of the modern game”. Oh, do you mean like you bent copper paying, phone tapping Cunts following players everywhere to make a profit off them? When there are serious allegations and so forth, fair enough the media will swarm, but pretending that Balotelli is the only player kicking doors when he’s sent off, fuck off will ya? Its boring.

I’ve seen the ABU’s do it too many times to our OWN lads and manager for no good reason, so I can’t stomach when they scapegoat other players either, even the bitters. Guess im not that interested in mainstream tittle-tattle carefully crafted for Hoi Palloi.

The beautiful game on the pitch is interesting enough, ta very much.

  571. Paul Parker says:

Random unrelated rant I know – but watching these cunts report Balotelli and Speed back to back is a joke. The hypocrisy is pissing me off, and its not even monday morning yet! Surely, in footballing terms, the biggest controversy on the pitch over the weekend was the Penalty that never was? Where the fuck is the media outcry that part time joe public can call for multi million pound penalties when there isn’t one? Smart money says that linesman won’t be investigated for bet fixing like the Pakistanis, even though his decision HAS to be more suspect than the ball scratching or whatever them cricketers were doing. I bet some of these lilly white EPL refs make a fucking fortune with their random, arbitrary decisions. Meanwhile, managers and players get fined for even questioning them!!!

[but theres zero corruption in the English game, they cry...] Yeah fucking right.

Off to finish mulling over that draw. Laters RoM.

    Gary Speed RIP

Far too fucking young. Depression(if that’s why he done it) is a serious illness. So much stigma surrounds it. Men are too fucking proud, to talk about their problems. This is the end result, when you bottle shit up. Why die for your pride? My uncle killed himself. I was only a kid at the time. I didn’t know why he done it. Shit happens, I suppose. I seen with my own eyes what it done to my family members. They say time heals? That’s BS. You just learn to deal with it better over time. The pains never leaves, though. I feel for Speed’s family. His kids and wife will going through hell. Today, football lost one it’s sons. Some might find it hard to understand why he done this. My heart goes out to his family and close friends. Sleep tight Gary. RIP

Thank you for the welcome though. :)

  581. smartalex says:

    Good evening WillieRedNut!

RIP Gary Speed! A tragic loss.

    I wonder:
    - ‘An assistant referee tried to commit suicide in the dressing room less than an hour before a match in Belgium on Saturday. The official, Chris Schelstraete, is recovering in hospital after being found with his wrists slashed ahead of a second division match between Tubize and FC Brussels.’
    -http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2066957/Belgian-linesman-Chris-Schelstraete-suicide-attempt.html?ito=feeds-newsxml
    - Referee Mike Jones was a late replacement for a suddenly ill Phil Dowd in Saturday’s game against Newcastle, where the linesman’s behaviour was compatible with match-fixing.

Did Phil Dowd refuse the coercion of a betting syndicate, or was he less likely to blindly follow a deceitful linesman? Did Chris Schelstraete fear retaliation against his family, threatened by Belgian organised crime?

There will always be corruption, and it follows the money. The EPL has a massive betting pot.
Of course there is attempted match-fixing going on all the time.

  582. CedarsDevil says:

Should have known with them smiley faces! hahahaha So whats the deal with the new nick?

  583. WillieRedNut says:

    Cedars – Thanks pal.

  584. smartalex says:

In one day, an international manager “hangs himself”, a linesman tries to slash his wrists in the change rooms, and a referee is substituted by an impressionable jellyfish, who is puppeteered into contriving a result.

    What are the odds?

  585. Sparkz says:

@Cedars- Haha I would have, but I’m just a tad too young to remember his Leeds days! Gotta say though, for an ex Leeds player, he was a really decent guy.

  588. NBI Red Onion says:

HEY HEY! Predicted a draw, bet on a draw and Citteh drew at Anfield!

Good news for us 5 points in it still though it would taste sweeter if it were 3 and we had not been robbed by that stupid penalty call. Citteh will drop at least 5-10 point between now and season end.

Citteh will drop points, we just need to stay consistent and as ever our defence is critical to that. plus we should have Cleverly back in second half so lets see what he brings to the table.

ALSO COMMENTS PREDICTING CITTEH WINNING THE TITLE HAVE BEEN GREATLY EXAGGERATED AND ENORMOUSLY PREMATURE. BELIEVE.

With our defence back and Rio and Vidic fit plus Carrick in form we just need a but of consistency to win the title and that is exactly what SAF is building now.

We will win the league. It won’t be easy but we will do it.

  589. smartalex says:

Compared to the millions of other ‘tragedies’ occurring daily, these incidents are paled.
An example is the 6 Togolese players killed yesterday in a bus crash.

However, I am drawing match-fixing conclusions from the events I referenced at 0:09.

We wuz robbed by a gang of gamblers!

    Top post on Barca shit..

    Hey Zibbie,

    what up pal

  612. samuel - united WE stand says:

Wouldn’t be Suprised if barca players were taking drugs, i don’t trust those bastards one single bit.

60+ games every season without injuries is definitely suspicious, you can’t deny they have the technical skills but you need incredible fitness and energy to play like they do, i want some investigation done on them, i bet platini won’t do fuck all though, practically licks barca’s ass.

Messi is usually injury prone, now he has become superman, same goes for iniesta despite not getting rest at all, very suspicious indeed.

we all know they’ll do anything to win, even taking performance enhancing drugs, they dive every match like fucking dogs with fleas, would be sweet if all their champions league titles got taken, SWEET. i honestly don’t give a damn about them.

  613. Clint-iamyourpapii says:

Papiilion  Thanks for those NBI

  614. Balaji Sivaraman says:

    Good Morning ROM!

@Stateside, Thanks for the links on the offside. Wonderful scientific insight on the anatomy of the human eye which everyone should read if it strikes their fancy.

It is something I have wondered about for some time as well. Each time a linesman gets a marginal offside call right, I always think it is due to random chance than him “actually” getting it right. For that same reason, I always forgive close calls whether for or against us. A good example would be Berbatov’s offside goal against Benfica during the CL match. A nice example of a decision which is unforgivable would be the Drogba offside from a couple of years ago.

Annie Eaves had a nice thing to say on Twitter about the penalty. The officials took more than a minute to arrive at a decision – when counting the time it actually took them to talk it over as well as the time it took them to shoo away all the United players it would probably be more than that – which ultimately was the wrong one. Not only would it have taken far less time for the fourth official to view the replay on a small screen and radio the message to the on-field official but it would have also been infinitely more accurate and on the spot.

The football organizations’ persistence on keeping football in the dark ages is making the game practically unwatchable. The sooner Sepp Blatter is replaced by someone who is actually from this millenium, the better for football.

  615. YS says:

@ Samuel : Well I always suspected that ………………..the Hormone thing with Messi………..who knows wat drugs Docs have come with that are not caught in drug tests

  616. Mikekelly12 says:

    Balaji
Spot on regarding the 4th official. Regarding max fixings, that decision was so appauling that one would have to question the hobesty of the hard up squaddy. Ridiculous how Barca remain virtually injury free the whole season. Similar scenario happening at Wastelands!!
Smartalex – good to see you back. You are a true lyrical wizard and linguistic impresario.

  617. Mr C says:

The EPL needs video technology to aid decisions and needs it fast. At this level referees’ decisions need to be got right. Anything else is a side show and invites incompetence and corruption.

    Ha ha ha,

well i think we need this human touch for off side rule, may be for goal line, technology should be used..

Once you take off side into technology, then why not penalty decisions? that would be what the world will be asking..

  621. sandeep1878 says:

YS – i’m not sure what they gave messi but he has turned into a football freak. don’t get me wrong he has the talent as no sort of drug can and will ever give you this but to keep playing at a ridiculous level and never suffering injuries despite him having a history of hamstring injuries and shit, he plays every game and never seems to lose energy for the next one’s, the whole barca team are like that.

They may keep the ball but they so chase and close down opponents which trust me isn’t easy, they have a small squad compared to other big teams and that should be a magnet for injuries but they all stay fit.

All i’m saying is, barcelona is a team that will do anything and i mean ANYTHING to win or stay ahead of everyone else. they dive, masters of conning the ref, they burst out into brawls for this so called team that is ‘more than a football club’ (mourinho doesn’t help matters but still).

I think if someone offered them illegal stuff to take to have supreme fitness then they’d take it, i have NO doubt about it, this could be a can of worms opened up and people will be sceptical about barca but then again it could mount to fuck all. Well said, in summary the Barca players are Platini’s bastard children and hence as a club they are untouchable ………….

Read some where the other day that some were calling for Blatter to step down after his idiotic remarks and were calling for Platini to take over! God help us all

  628. CedarsDevil says:

    Platini

A decent player you were no doubt however to me you are the true definition of a cunt. Was sat in the East Stand and being a Stretty old timer I was singing and shouting my lungs out, kept getting strange looks from some tourists….ha? What are you looking at? Its United and its a football match not an opera for fucks sake

platini is a disrespectful arrogant fool you know, how he got such a big job is beyond me, could have given it to a more level headed person, why isn’t there a proper election in which all football fans make a vote for who actually gets the job, why is it a formality that platini the barca ass licking prick gets it?

Nice to see Fergie saying he’ll blood more youngsters against crystal palace, i think the team needs fresh energy and i hope they all play well and stake a claim to be regularly choosen for the first team.

Pogba looks likely to start, morrison (probably come off the bench), zeki fryers, rafael&fabio, smalling, diouf will all play in my view.

What do people think of macheda? still not sure about him. since his goal against villa, he hasn’t progressed as well as you’d imagine, Fergie clearly rates him highly and he is talented but jury is out on him still but overall i’m glad Fergie will play more young players, if they all break through and become quality then we may not even venture into the transfer market for a long while but then again they may not all come through but i’m more optimistic for sure, you always need to improve and Fergie ain’t one to rest on his laurels or feel complacent.

  640. Balaji Sivaraman says:

Samuel, Great rants against Barca. It really seems you have a deep hatred for them and I like you for that. :)

IMO, City are destroying football with their money and Barca are doing the same with their on-field monopoly and their iron-grip over the governing organizations. If people still think that FIFA, UEFA don’t favor Barca, then they should come out of their bunkers. Messi player of the year when Sneijder led Inter to CL glory and Holland to the WC final?? Yeah right. And don’t even get me started on the loopholes that allowed them to survive financial disaster after declaring insolvency while still being able to pay the highest wages of any club in the world. I completely agree with Samuel in that any fight against Barca is going to have the odds stacked against your favor.

For me, the only club that is absolutely loathed within all circles of football except by their own fans is ours – Manchester United. Media absolutely hate us and would rather hand over the title to the Sheikh and his oil money than our hard-earned success under Sir Alex. Their only aim is to constantly disrupt our well-being by publishing absurd, non-essential and untrue stories about our players. The F.A. overlooks the fact that United players have practically carried the International team on their shoulders for nearly half a century. Their only aim is to use their corrupt bureaucracy to impose fines and bans on us in an illegal effort to stop us from further glory. The opposition fans loathe us because we’ve remained competitve and have been winning all and sundry for a quarter of a century and they wonder why their clubs are not in the same position. The larger wide world’s opinion is largely built on those of the aforementioned. So, it is no surprise that they also hate us. As a result, the only people who like Manchester United are those concerned with the club and of course the die-hard followers.

This is in stark contrast to Barcelona, Real Madrid, and even the present Manchester City. All of them are media darlings with everybody wanking over them and singing their praises. Since most of the aforementioned are competing with Manchester United in one way or the other – BPL, UEFA CL or world-wide popularity – they are able to consistenly garner support from anybody who hates us, which usually comprises of anybody why isn’t a Manchester United fan. Every football organization would rather one of these clubs win than other clubs – our presence here also should not be ignored. As a result, these clubs invariably get everything going for them.

I have no idea why I posted that diatribe. The only point I can think of is that, despite the hate of the entire world being against us, we still remain successful both on and off the pitch and are the Supreme Football Club in the world. Their hate invariably always makes us stronger.

You beauty, pretty much summed it up……… Rival fans think we are paranoid but in actual fact we are realistic…. Every sick fuck in the game hate us, its a fact, from the FA, to UEFA and FIFA

Similarly to us with message after message of condolences? No would they fuck. They would mock it I reckon. Just wondering. What do you think lads?

  649. King Eric says:

samuel – Spot on pal. Summat is afoot with fucking Barca and I have been saying it for 2 years. Nevermind Messi, Abidal was dying with a fucking tumour. 12 WEEKS later is he playing in a fucking European Cup final. Fucking hate the arrogant cunts. Messi plays EVERY SINGLE BASTARD GAME. That shit is impossible, Also their president I notice was telling everyone that would listen that the Prem and other leagues should be cut to 16 teams. Err sorry but what the fuck has it to do with you? Fucking arrogant cunts. Hate Madrid but hope they turn them over next mobth which they will at the Bernabeu.

NBI Red Onion @ 0:22: “Citteh will drop at least 5-10 point between now and season end.”

I hope that you are wrong – that would give them about 100 points and 100 points should guarantee a clear margin of victory of about ten points. Right now, UTD are “on pace” to get around 85 points for the whole season.

  655. denton davey says:

Balaji @ 7:51: ” The officials took more than a minute to arrive at a decision – when counting the time it actually took them to talk it over as well as the time it took them to shoo away all the United players it would probably be more than that – which ultimately was the wrong one. Not only would it have taken far less time for the fourth official to view the replay on a small screen and radio the message to the on-field official but it would have also been infinitely more accurate and on the spot.”

Do you think that that extra time was actually added to the official extra time ? There’s always a lot of time-wasting and the argument that video replay would create “breaks in the action” is just a half-truth – of course it would BUT time is wasted in lots of other ways in the current system.

  656. denton davey says:

Samuel @ 10:59: “What do people think of macheda? still not sure about him. since his goal against villa, he hasn’t progressed as well as you’d imagine”

He’s had some leg injuries and a completely-wasted loan move to Sampdoria. So, it’s hard to know what to make of him .

Like a lot of players he might be what’s called “4A” (a term used by the baseball analyst Gregg Zaun for a guy who tears up TripleA (i.e., the senior minor league) but is always found wanting in the major league). In KikoTheKid’s random appearances, he’s not looked like a “likely lad”. But, like a lot of young players, you just don’t know until/unless he’s given the chance to play with some regularity in the first-team.

Apparently, a lot of these promising youngsters are going to get a run-out against Crystal Palace. Big chance to impress although some players – and I have a sneaking suspicion that Ravel Morrison is one of this lot – do better when they play with better players, at a higher level of competition. So, playing against Crystal Palace isn’t really a good yardstick – didn’t TheArse field a team of under-21s that tore a new one out of the second-division competition ? but almost all of those guys never made it into the first-team.

  657. StatesideAussie says:

Samuel/Denton …. I’m not sure about Kiko either. Still, it’s easy to forget that the lad only turned 20 at the start of this season (in fact, he was still 19, didn’t turn 20 until a few weeks into it). He is 3 years younger than Hernandez and almost a year younger than Welbeck. I am sure he’ll have a fine career, just not sure if it will be with us. Pity about that loan spell in Sampdoria, worse than a waste of time.

  658. Zibbie says:

Kiko will have until next summer to improve, in the summer Owen and Berba will go, at least Owen. Then Rooney, Lil Pea and Welbeck. Kiko and Diuof are big questions.
Lets look at the continuing turn over of the club. In the summer 6 months to 2 1/2 years who will leave?
    1) Owen
    2) Berba
    3) Rio
    4) Evra
    5) Park
    60 Giggs
    All for age
    1) PIG
    2) Gibbo
    3) ??
    4)???
    5)???

With 3 to 5 promotions with 2 or 3 making the 1st team the others will be sold.
3 to 5 new player bought 1st team types with 4 to 8 prospects purchased as well.

Rooney will be 27 1/2 leading the 2013/2014 for the next 5 years.

  659. Zibbie says:

The whole time SAF will compete on all fronts for silverware. The 2013 team will be the best team in the world. FFP to help.

  660. StatesideAussie says:

Interesting to read SAF’s comments about how we bring young players through into the first team, as reported on the official site. I especially liked the last comment: “I don’t think we’ve ever been off the mark and given a boy his chance too early. That can be very damaging. If he’s not up to the standards we require at United, then we don’t venture there. The last thing we’d want is to humiliate a player. I’m not saying every player I’ve ever given a debut to has gone on to be a fantastic player at this club, but most of them have at least forged successful careers.”

Notice how sensitive he is to the players — the downside of bringing a player through befoire he’s ready is not expressed as a negative for the club, but in terms of what it means to the player. He could have said, “A club as big as us can’t afford to play someone who’s not ready.” Instead, he says, “The last thing we’d want is to humiliate a player.” I find that an interesting insight.

  661. StatesideAussie says:

Zibbie … unless the boss is foxing, it doesn’t sound like Berba will leave next summer, since he says he intends to invoke the club’s one-way option to extend. But I agree that Old Man Time won’t be denied. All those players you listed are entering the twilight of their careers, plus you forgot Carrick, who will be 31 during the next off season. So most of those will not be at OT 3 years from now, or if they are, they will be in greatly reduced roles.

I wouldn’t place too much faith in the FFP rules, though.
    (a) They will be full of loopholes, and for every loophole they contain, they’ll be at least one attorney + one accountant trying to slither through it.
    (b) it will take an eternity to submit the books and then review them, and the whole thing is on a time delay of 2-3 years (I think they will review this year’s books two years from now). Clubs will have plenty of scope to say the accounts are out of date and no ponger reflect the true picture (while also maintaining that it would be unfair and impractical to require them to supply up-to-date books).
    (c) The review will be handled by a committee, which will be rampant with vested interests and subject to relentless lobbying.
    (d) The only significant punishment that can be imposed is temporary explusion from the CL and already Platini and his yes-men are muttering that this would only be done as an absolute last resort, so we all know which way that’s going. Let’s not even talk about Shitty. Everyone on Planet Football knows that Barcelona are insolvent. But does anyone seriously believe they would ever be banned from the CL? Or The Virus?
Call me a cynical old fool, but in my view, the FFP rules are no more than a political showboat.

  662. King Eric says:

Stateside – Hello mate. Fascinating insight by Fergie, What a great way of looking at things. Regards Carrick I think he could be at United into his mid thirties in a sort of Scholes role. Deep lying midfielder. He has never relied on pace but his positional sense and awareness are second to none. A top pro too and will be great for the young ones.

  663. denton davey says:

King Eric @ 19:14: “Regards Carrick I think he could be at United into his mid thirties in a sort of Scholes role. Deep lying midfielder. He has never relied on pace but his positional sense and awareness are second to none. A top pro too and will be great for the young ones.”

I’d agree with you on Michael Carrick. As long as he can remain healthy, I’d reckon that he has about 4/5 more years of first-team football ahead of him – much to the “disgust” of those idiots who don’t see what he offers !

The one thing I’d like to see from Michael Carrick is a bit more willingness to drive forward, out of defence, carrying the ball. We’ve seen from Phil Jones’ forward charges that the whole “defensive scheme” is thrown into disarray when a nominal-defender charges forward with the ball. (I’ve always thought that Rio could have done this, too; but now, I suppose, that Rio’s movements are being monitored so that he doesn’t over-exert or over-extend himself.)

ONE OTHER THING – why is it that some of the most interesting and thoughtful discussion only occurs at the end of very, very long threads ?

  664. James21 says:

Leeds fans would be Leeds fans. We wouldn’t be any supprised to read about all the Beckham/ Giggs death celebration parties going on in Leeds.

  665. redbilly says:

Well stalemate. We gain a point bitters a point. To be fair to the scouse , the pressure they put on the arabian shites had them on the back foot, Hart to be fair saved their arse. I expect twice as much pressure on them when we take a trip to wastelands.

  666. StatesideAussie says:

King Eric … that insight to the way SAF thinks is a great clue to his success. I know we all like to hear stories about the hair dryer, and yes we all know he always puts the club first and can be utterly ruthless. But those stories only show one side of him, and so they distort the picture. The ABUs always like to paint him as some sort of playground bully boy, a tyrant in his own courtyard, but there’s so much more to it than that.

I agree about Carrick — I might have jumped the gun there, when I said he had only 2-3 years left. if he retires on his 36th birthday, that still gives him another 5 seasons after this one. Just think: by then, he will have been with us 11 years, and so far he is averaging 45+ games a season. Despite what some on here seem to think, that would would be a most impressive career. I have not been able to figure out why he is so underrated on a fan site like this.

  667. denton davey says:

StateSideAussie @ 22:08: ” I have not been able to figure out why he is so underrated on a fan site like this.”

I think he is “under-rated” because he plays a slow, “seemingly-lazy” game. MIchael Carrick’s job at UTD is to gum-up-the-works, foil opposition attacks, and start the ball rolling again with UTD in possession. This is NOT what was advertised – he was supposed to be a kind of Pirlo, playing alongside Hargreaves’ Gattuso.

What was expected was that Michael Carrick would be the “quarterback”, orchestrating the transition from defence to attack but he has played a different, quieter, less flamboyant role in shielding the central defence. He’s fit that job-description like a round peg in a round hole.

  668. StatesideAussie says:

Denton … oh, yeah, I get all that. I guess I am surprised there’s so many who don’t get it, though. Even if people don’t have the understanding and appreciation to “get it”, anyone with even a passing knowledge of the club and Sir Alex should realize that if Carrick wasn’t playing the way Sir Alex wanted, and/or wasn’t doing it well, then he would have been long gone by now. After all, Carrick is 30 years old, this is his sixth United season, and his average (over the first 5 seasons) was 46.4 games a season, which by our standards, is way up there. Whatever some people on here might think, he must be doing something right in SIr Alex’s eyes.
