Absolute legend and I always wonder, how good would he have been in the modern game?
He used to take the piss out of defenders when they were kicking him all game, so imagine in todays game where the slightest contact is a foul, he’d run riot with any defence.
Imagine him playing on the perfect pitches of today with a modern ball.
Also, I’d like to think in today’s world he’d get a little bit more protection from the media and the spotlight, we may have seen a longer career.
It’s all ifs and buts, but one things certain. George is a legend.
Maradona good, Pele better George Best. RIP
that Polish song is weird for that compilation
Too true Willie mate, to true!! The only statement that fully describes the legend!!
Simply the best. Can’t believe it’s been 5 years without him. He missed so much from our recent success.
I never saw him play and my heart aches at never having done so, Pele, Maradonna, Zidane you where all truly wonderful players but I wouldn’t have swapped GB for any of you.
RIP Georgie. Red Legend.
if only he had born in a football powerhouse nation, he would have got far more plaudits than maradona and pele
I remember Paddy Crerand giving an interview, back in the late 80′s early 90′s and he was asked about John Barnes, who was a great player at the time. John Barnes he said, great player, no comparison to George Best lol.
Simply the BEST
nice one scott…
RIP George Best..You will never be forgotten..I envy those who had the chance to see this Legend play..
Will we ever come to reminisce about a current or recent United player in the same way again? Giggs possibly? Certainly not that guy up front with Berbatov last night. He’s blown his chances of a United sainthood forever in my view. But who knows?
Best = one of a kind.
As of course is Sir Bobby – who incidentally I discovered with immense pride was delivered by my wife’s grandmother, up in the Northumberland back in 1937.
old trafford manchester united goal scored by number 7 georrrrrrrge best i wish i could hear it
Simply The Greatest
R.I.P Georgie the Belfast Boy
Gone but never forgotten, his memory lives on in the hearts and mind of every Man Utd fan around the world.
Simply the Best. R.I.P Georgie Best.
Just thinking to myself how fantastic it is to hear a tribute from another land and language than we are used to, and how it shows the great love and affection that Besty and Manchester United have enjoyed for many, many years.
Then I read Chep’s offering and think…”f*cking Hell, I hope Chep is not Irish or a Brit because that would be just f*cking typical’.
simply the best, undisputed !
I’ll never forgive myself for losing an autograph I got from him.
And it wasn’t even that I met him up close. I got it from a mutual friend.
put norn iron on the map, proud 2 be irish
Great compilation..I love the way he stays up even after those tackles..And I love the way he raises his right hand after scoring..
Will always top the list of my all time favourite United players…R.I.P George
@ Costas
I have a portrait of him which is also signed by the great man…..
“Legend” is bandied about a lot nowadays and – as, Gresham’s Law suggests, the bad money devalues the good.
Being a fan of UTD is an incredible privilege because the club has had more than its fair share of truly legendary players – from Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law, Georgie Best down through the more recent generation of Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.
There’s no question in my mind that Bobby Charlton was the most “iconic” UTD player – skill, desire, and a will to win combined with sportsmanship and an understanding that it was his privilege to play before the adoring crowds at Old Trafford.
Georgie Best was a better player than Bobby – more athletic and more skilful – but his lack of personal discipline meant that he flamed out and never really achieved his full potential. We all know about his self-destructive tendencies which seem to have been kept at arm’s length as long at UTD were a top team but as the older players of the 1968 generation began to lose their edge it seemed that Georgie lost his, too. It was a “tragedy” – played out in full public view.
He might have been a better player than Maradona or even Pele but his Northern Irish nationality meant that he never got to perform on the world stage. In his prime, Ingerland were a soccer power and his inclusion into a British eleven would have been a huge boon – to him and to the team. But, it was not to be. Tht too was tragic since it meant that the generation of players who had been born in the wake of WWII were deprived of the best and the brightest of the lot. With Georgie Best in an all-British team, it is hardly inconceivable that a re-peat in 1970 would have been farfetched and a three-peat in 1974 would also have been a possibility.
Beyond his footballing prowess, Georgie Best was a charming man. Georgie was well-spoken and always had a wicked sense of humour – often self-deprecating but always given with a twinkle in his eyes. And he had charisma – star power – as was evidenced by the amazing response to his death and burial five years ago.. Why he touched so many people so deeply is a matter of conjecture but there was no question that he did. Perhaps it was a matter of “lost youth” – I still remember the way in which his stunning goal against Sheffield United was celebrated on MatchOfTheDay. Check it out on YouTube. It was a Wordsworth moment – to be alive was joyful but to be a young UTD fan was utter bliss.
Georgie Best a true Legend – and it besmirches his stature to use that term for chavs, yobs, and wayne-come-latelys.
I saw him score the first time i watched United.
On the day Denis law got a hat trick but Bestie was the one that made me love United.
In the Nineties i got to spend 25 mins alone talking to him when he was at a friend of mines shop in the Royal Exchange Manchester, where he was waiting to be filmed for the Clothes Show.
The warmth of his handshake, the time he gave me will live in my memory forever.
Bless you George.
Everybody needs a human touch,
Everybody, everybody needs love,
I’M no different,
I am just the same———> no your not Georgie boy.
A player in the game.
La Vraie affaire………..Simplement le meilleur.
Blessed, God bless……….Take care of him.
denton davey
Excellent post mate, I was only old enough to watch him play in his last 2 seasons or so for United…
By the way, do you have a link to the video you mentioned on youtube?
Cheers
CedarsDevil – sorry, I don’t have any link to that Sheffield United match or the MatchOfTheDay foofrah – hell, I’m so electronically-challenged that I’m always surprised that the machine does something (anythng !) when I issue a command. In truth, no one else does something (or anythng) when I issue a command – even my late dog, Duffy, looked at me with veiled contempt when I tried to command him to do something (or anything) unless it involved getting food, THEN he was my slave for the 47 seconds that he needed to inhale his breakfast/dinner.
the best player to ever grace a football pitch. Simple as that.
graced

Hahahaha, you cracked me up mate, guess I am in the same boat as you are here!
Thanks for that Scott … your back in my good books!
Oh and BTW … how many of us can say they stood on the Stretford End and watched Georgie Best play?
(I’m privledged to say ……..My hands up!!)
what sums best up, great player shame we dont have him in the united team these days
My mum used to call me Georgie Best superstar as a kid
All grown up and United in my blood I asked my mum after Best passed away why did she used to call me George Best
She told me of a wonderful story of her friend who used to go to OT from Wolverhampton just to watch George Best play. Whenever she used to see me she just called me Georgie Best superstar because that’s what made her happy.
I am no George Best – but I am proud of the player that made United great. I am proud that alongside many that have graced this beautiful shirt – George Best was one of those players that wore it.
I wish it had turned out all so different for him and us in those years of loneliness. Thank-you George Best you really were a superstar…
Well, it’s a song by Myslovitz, a Polish rock band. That song is about Best. Georgie Best.
“Odurzony Piotruś Pan
Książe życia umiera sam
Spadając z krzesła mówił mi tak:
“Nie umierajcie tak jak ja”
‘Groggy Peter Pan
The prince of life dies alone
Falling from chair he said
Don’t die like me’
Too young to have seen him in the flesh, but you only have to listen to anyone who seen him, or played with, or against, him, to know just how good he was.
I remember watching ‘Your on Sky Sports’ a few years back and Rodney Marsh was on, some silly little City fan called up and was telling Marsh how he was one of the best players he’s seen, as good as anyone in that era, as good as Best. Marsh, not exactly small headed, was smilling and loving the adulation, but turned when he heard that last part.
“Thanks, but not George son, no one was as good as George” was all he said, and you could see in his demeanour that he meant it.
Brings goosebumps hearing players who should know talk like that.
Yeah, Marshy loved Bestie, as does Harry Redknapp, Alan Mullery and a host of other people. You know you’re special when your peers wax lyrical about you, one in a kind George Best.
EVERYBODY……………………………………… NUMBER 1 WAS GEORGIE BEST NUMBER 2 WAS GEORGIE BEST NUMBER 3………………………………………………………….
@Dave Mack
Yeah mate, but how many can say that they share the same birthday as Georgie? I can, lol.
I share the same nationality, beat that suckers!
Yeah but that’s more commonplace willie, lol. You know you are destined for greatness when you are born on the same day as George Best.
Actually Naomi Campbell was also born on the same day, so there goes my theory…
Costas – I am great though lol.
@willie
I won’t dispute that, lol.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1333124/Wayne-Rooney-finally-apologises-Manchester-United-fans.html?ito=feeds-newsxml
on this great holiday of Thanksgiving, i am thankful for BEST
Costas … if that’s the case you also share it with my Mum!!
I’ve been critical of Scott continually bringing up the Rooney issue so this may appear a bit hypocritical but if you go Rooney’s statement on MUTV ices everything for me and really should allow us all to move on.
Amongst other things he makes a complete apology to the fans.
ROONEY….ROONEY …. ROONEY….
Makes me proud to be Northern Irish.
I hope we don’t get a “What should I do” video from Wayne ala Lebron James.
Not sure if everything’s healed right now, but time to concentrate on football.
@Dave Mack
May 22nd? I told you that day was special, lol.
“I’d give all the champagne I’ve ever drunk to have played alongside Eric Cantona in a big European match at Old Trafford.” – George Best
Cool……………..
Best=LEGEND!!!
Off topic, please guys enough of the Rooney circuse. I know we are all still hurting in one too many ways from the incident and might to not even feel like we used to towards him, but since he still wears the Red shirt and has finally made that apology isn’t it best for us fans to get behind him as this can only to the team, and give us the fans so much more victories to cheer about.
I believe he definitely owes us loads of goals, as that’s all that should matter to us fans for now, and we also, although volunteerily, have to give him at least a second chance.
After all we are UNITED!
UNITED WE STAND!!
Well Never Die!!!
Great post Denton Davey.
Thanks for the memories George, never, ever to be forgotten. The thing that brings a lump to the throat now, looking at the brilliant footage, was how HAPPY George looked when he scored, a kind of joy that engulfed and took possession of him. He gave us all so much, but it’s sad to think how it all fell apart, and however much he might publicly deny it, he never found the same happiness again. And nor did we.
Paul H, your grandmother’s connection to the birth of Sir Bobby, well that’s like being one of the Three Wise man, or at least one of the sheperds! What a brilliant thing to be able to tell your grandchildren.
*…can only add to the team…*
well well. what about that he finally apologizes, wonder what the OT faithful will make of this, this is going to be interesting. Anyone think he’s still going to be flogged off in the summer ?
Love and respect always for George Best.
slim – I have been one of the fans defending him. Many say defending him to much which is true at times, but many wil pick apart his apoligy many will say this and that and say it was a half assed apoligy, many should forgive him many will never. But he will be here for many years to come and he is still is and going to be uniteds most dangerous and important attacking player.
Certainly our best player by miles..
a true legend..look at his composure in those goals!!..truly unbelievable..
the way he cuts the defenders in all those pretty goals is simply sublime..
i havent seen him play but i have realised that hez the best player we have had..
Georgy loves the beard
Long Live Georgy u are the best!!
GGMU
In other news Wayne Rooney has apologized
A true legend.
I have a framed picture of him hanging on my wall, i made it myself. its a black and white photo of the man himself with on of my favorite quotes underneath. “I spent alot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest i just squandered”- george best. then beside the quote is a george best fiver. Its one of my most prized possessions.
Just wondering- does anybody else have a george best fiver?
I wish I could say I saw him play. A case of being born way too late. It’s unbelievable how he established himself as the best player in the world considering the awful playing conditions in his playing days.. there were tougher defenders, muddy pitches all the time and the quality of the sponge-like football used was absolutely shite. It makes you wonder how he would fare in the modern game.Nontheless he shined. RIP Georgie Best.
@ fergie is the boss
True that. To be honest all i’m looking forward too is seeing some good football from the lads. The league is there for the taking. FFS Redknapp and his goons reckon they can lift the trophy this year. They’ve been telling every man and dog who cares to listen that they can win everything in sight. Jeez
has for best greatest player ever, na he is close but sir bobby is by a distance uniteds greatest player. The greatest player of my generation 15 years watching united the top 3 are? cantona scholes and giggs
When I was seven and growing up in a sleepy neighbourhood in India, Maradona happened in the worldcup. He was all the rage, and growing up in a soccer crazy city, you could see the young people garlanding huge cardboard cutouts of Diego and some even placing incense sticks in front of his picture. Naturally, I joined in the craze, trying to be part of the senior boys’ lot. Only my father and some of his cronies would shake their heads, smile knowingly at each other and say, “Maradona, he is great. But he is not better than Best”. I used to get puzzled at this comment – who the hell was this guy who my father would have me believe was better than Maradona and even Pele? It’s like saying that someone’s better than Bradman! In those days we had no Internet, and the only international football we could watch on TV was the world cup and footage from previous world cups, so no Best. I grew up and went about my life like any other lad, but somewhere deep in my mind, the mystery of Best remained. It was when I was about fifteen, that I managed to see Best on TV and ohh my gaawd…did my jaw drop! watching him was better than hanging out in front of the girls’ school, better than sneaking ciggies butts from dad’s ashtray and (marginally) better than The Doors and Led Zep. Scott’s post takes me back to those idyllic childhood moments – there doesnt seem to be so much joy in life, or football anymore. George Best – may you live for ever, and thanks for all the joy you have given us.
After watching this video the player who reminds me most of Best is Messi….and if Messi is this good now you can just imagine how brilliant Best must have been then….the absolute BEST
OFF TOPIC…
So Scott…Rooney finally publicaly apologized. Happy?
http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/clubfootball/news/newsid=1341525.html?cid=rssfeed&att=
@BabyFaceAssassin: Exactly…I had the same feeling…the only player today who comes remotely close to this is Messi. And mind you, he has a much lower center of gravity than Best…how can you do that with a lanky sort of build?
Rooney apologised by just saying I apologise to the fans. I’m expecting something better – maybe scoring against Arsenal and Chelsea then pulling up his shirt and his vest has a message reading, ‘ Please, forgive me’ something along those lines. Anyway, I certainly cannot forgive him that easily. Might forgive him if works his ass off on the field till the season ends and helps us win the league. But nothing can be forgotten. I will never feel the same for him.
My view: http://www.unitedarmy.info/rooney-apologises-so-should-we-forgive-him/
George Best………………….no one better.
still the best I have ever seen.
I remember a testimonial game back in the 80′s, cant quite recall who for (Kevin Moran????) and George was supposed to be coming on for a 10 min cameo. Ground was packed, then over the tanoy, a statement that because of press goings on (cannot remember what it was) he was not going to play.
You could feel the disappointment poor down the terrace (United Road).
It would have been my chance to see him in the flesh. But alas no.
imo best player whoever lived and its not even close
WELL DONE SCOTT ITS DAYS LIKE TODAY WE THINK OF THE BIGGER PICTURE WHEN IT COMES TO “OUR CLUB” SENT SHIVERS UP MY SPINE

I true football legion
R.I.P. – L E G E N D
George is and will always be my personal alltime heroe …………
This comment probably too late for any one to read but I wa at his last game V QPR for United. He was dropped for the following week agains Plymouth in the FA Cup by the Doc and never played again in a Red shirt. What a loss!!
This is a George best thread lads, why bring the Rooney thing into it?? -Show the legend that is George Best a bit more respect
