  1. Dani says:

Giggs is beast. Best player on the team, with 35 years. What a player.

And after tonight I hope people cut Berbatov some slack, he made the team play after entering the game, and was involved in every play of the team. Had a huge game today. But you don’t get to see him a lot.

  2. Dani says:

Oh, and Carrick really need this goal. Well done, man!

  3. edwin says:

Look at Anderson at 01:23 on Giggs’s goal!
    Classic!!

  4. Tony Starks says:

Wolfsberg are a very good side, and we looked comfortable against them for most of the game – so well done!

For once Rooney was not his usual self, but Berba was class, our fans should not fall for the anti-United media bias against some of our players..

  5. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

im not just saying this because of the video but
    BERBATOV IS MAGIC

  6. elblanco says:

carrick had a stormer i thought…finally having a good game, great finish!

  7. Ulster Red says:

did alrite at times..did enough for the 3 points which you take at this early stage..in the driving seat now.Carrick had a great game as did berba..evra still getting into great positions but final ball lacking.

  8. Dave says:

Carrick was absolutely SUPERB second half. Fair play to the lad.

  9. Pat says:

Why give Giggs credit for that goal?

  10. wazza (Bezi) says:

Ando is hilarious in that Giggs’s goal. well played Carrick. looked liked the old Carrick of last season. Valencia should start somewhere with his left peg. i can’t believe he never makes any attempt to use it. Lennon was very much similar a couple of years back but now he has improved his left peg a lot. Berba deserved a goal for his showing today. it was awesome.

  11. Jassim Al-Thani -- Qatar says:

    Fantastic stuff!!

Hopefully Carrick can return to his best… Sucks for Owen though, hope its not so serious

  12. Tony Starks says:

I’m just listening to BBC five live – it’s amazing – all that these experts seem to do is criticise United – come on, we just beat the Champions of Germany, we weren’t playing a mid-table Premiership side!

It’s like no one want’s to look at positive’s, they just pick negative’s, you’d think we are mid table, not top of the league and with max points in Europe!

  13. aig alex is god says:

owen out for 2 to 3 weeks.thats bad news.carrick played well today.hope this is a sign of things to come

  14. Doghouse says:

I think Berbatov was immense for us tonight, really worked the ball, made things happen, even won the ball back at times. A really great performance. I thought Carrick was great too, the goal was great for him but I hope he gets praised for his performance throughout. I thought Anderson and Valencia did really well as well, both had moments of sloppiness but they put in a lot of energy. Giggs was Giggs, what more needs to be said about him?

Have come away from watching this game with a huge amount of respect for Wolfsburg. Better sides will come to Old Trafford this season and not bring half as much fight. They had a lot of physical presence, they weren’t shy to play the ball around and their attackers were a handful. I was impressed by the keeper too, he couldn’t have done much better, the Giggs goal was unstoppable from the deflection and the Carrick shot he was unsighted. The Carrick shot he saved he made look comfortable. Where he could act he acted decisively and you could see he was communicating well with the defenders. One to keep an eye on I think.

Shame about Owen because I know he will have been trying to get back into the England squad. The silver lining I suppose is that it really enabled Berbatov to show how he can change the game.

  15. Doghouse says:

Just to add, didn’t know Owen was that badly hurt, that sucks. I thought he was just a bit wonky after missing training. :(

  16. aig alex is god says:

tony starks.jealous mate.had this been chelsea or dippers they would have praised them for being so resilient.dont pay attention to what these fools say.

  17. aig alex is god says:

think owen should not have started.he was having a tight groin and the wet surface made things difficult.hope he recovers soon.

  18. cantona7 says:

yeah i fell sorry for Owen too..

Berba was fantastic. Simply awesome. Giggs.. i have no words for him.

Wolfsburg are definitely a good side, to be able to score against us when we are performing like that.

I just hope Rooney and Berba could get on the score sheet. Rooney was trying too hard i think. So i guess he is far from a finished product. He just need a little something to get to Ronaldo, Kaka and Messi’s level.

  19. hurr says:

Great to see us on the homepage of Soccernet even though Ronnie scored 2 for Real! =D

  20. Jorgen says:

Really agreed with those commentators! Lots of good points:)
Didnt see the match but heard Berbatov was immense. I dont like that he is being put as second to Owen in Europe… And we can always do with his passing which tonight was very very good!

  21. Jack says:

Giggs again, his bassically winning us games on his own this season, 2 assists v Arsenal, 3 Assists v City, 2 Assists v Stoke, Goal & a Assist tonight, 8 assists and his only played like 2 and a half games, Long live Ryan Giggs!

  22. RedTilDead says:

    Berbatov interview:

You have now played 50 games for Manchester United. Do you think you have lived up to the 38 mio Euro fee on your head?

Man, who can live up to that sort of money? Nobody can. If I think about that money it is crazy to me. I can’t believe it.

OK then, do you think you have played like Dimitar Berbatov can play

In my first year I was disappointed in myself. I need to say that. My nerves were too much and that is my responsibility. I think I wanted so much to prove myself to these supporters. You must remember, they are used to Best, Charlton, Cantona. I am just Dimitar. It was a big pressure for me and maybe I failed myself. I got a number of assists, but I must score more goals.

I am more pleased with my overall game in this second season already. I feel that I have integrated myself better into the team. I am much stronger, much fitter. I still wish I could score more. I don’t know what I am doing wrong sometimes. Maybe it’s luck, maybe it’s me…who knows? At nights I have kept myself awake thinking ‘you could have done this instead’.

You sound like there is so much pressure. You no longer play with happiness, would that be fair?

What? How can you even ask that man?

I am a footballer playing for the best club in the world. I am playing with legends like Scholes, Giggs and Rooney. Being coached by a man like Sir Alex Ferguson. How can I not be happy?

And the supporters? I know some are angry with your performances

Then that is my fault, not theirs. It is me who must change. Manchester United is their club. They have treated me perfectly since I came.

Really? Some have called you lazy.

Yes, but this is my style of play. I don’t run for no reason. I am always alert and ready.

I will be honest. This criticism did affect me, but not in a negative way. I looked at our ProZone stats and saw that I was 9th in distance covered. I am kind of a nerd. I looked at them too much, maybe. By the end of the season I was 4th. Maybe this season I will be 1st (laughs).

  23. denton davey says:

“I’ve got to admit it’s getting better, it’s getting better all the time”

If UTD had their “shooting boots” on then this could have been a 7-1 demolition-job like the game against Roma a few years ago.

Once the first fifteen minutes were over, UTD had gained the measure of their opponents and were superb – especially Anderson and Evra. Everyone else played well but those two were awesome.

My early-season criticisms of Berbatov, Carrick and, to a certain extent, Valencia were answered; the first two stuffed them down my throat ! Valencia was excellent but imagine how good he’d be IF he could finish AND use his left foot.

Wolfsburg are a strong team but they were played off the park – too many offsides and some dodgy finishing meant that the final score-line flattered them.

What is most encouraging was the obvious evidence that this year’s team is – really and truly, getting better all the time. And, to imagine that such a comprehensive victory could be gained without Scholes and the almost-legendary Fletcherinho makes the result even more satisfying. (Oh, yeah, I know, UTD have the weakest midfield of the “Big 4″ – what can anyone say to that but “Yeah but… No but”.

  24. Ulster Red says:

great attitude from berba..did really well tonight

  25. Jessie says:

That’s a good interview with Berba, though the interviewer is a real dbag. Some fans are just too stupid to appreciate what Berbatov does because he doesn’t play in your face. He’s much more subtle and nuanced, but a great player nonetheless.

How can anyone criticize our performance (BBC)? Maybe I’m the dumb, but I thought we ran that game for most of the time. We could have scored 5 or 6.

And Anderson during Giggs’ goal- Amazing. I was wondering why he was turned around at first.

  26. cantona7 says:

lol 4th by the end of the season. 1st by the end of this season.

to all who called Berbatov is lazy, read that. Or maybe you are too lazy too read. If you can read that, but you didnt, somehow you are an idiot.

  27. Johnny from Sewanee says:

Berba’s control on the build-up was perfect, so was Rooney’s pass and Gigg’s lay-off! Great team/skill goal!

  28. Costas says:

Could be premature, but i think Carrick is on his way back. Even before the goal, i thought that he was doing himself justice today. I was more disappointed in Ando, but to be fair, both of them worked hard today

8 wins in a row. We have never done this so early in the season in the last 20 years. The team finds a way to win all the time. I hope this carries on until the end. Gutted for Owen though. You can sense the ABUs starting to laugh at him.

  29. Jessie says:

I forgot to say that the commentator over here in Canada on Sportsnet LOVED Berba. At one point he said “if you didn’t know any better, you would think Berbatov has the ball tied to his shoes.”

  30. the scottish wonder says:

People were worried who would score the goals this season. These are the goalscorers so far this season:

    Rooney 7
    Berba 2
    Fletch 2
    Giggs 2
    Nani 2
    Owen 2
    Anderson 1
    Carrick 1
    Welbeck 1
    Scholes 1
    O´Shea 1

Thats 11 players scoring in the first 10 games

  31. elbarillo says:

Great match tonight. Wolfsburg came and made a real game of it.

Giggs is awesome. A word that has lost it’s meaning in slack American parlance. Software apps are not awesome nor is any kind of chocolate bar. The Grand Canyon is awsome as is Giggs. A combination of superhuman fitness and a massive range of football experience makes him the ultimate footballer. If Messi or Torres or any of these other whippersnappers are still maintaining their form when they are 35 then i’ll shake their hand. In Torres’s case I will just of just scratched my arse.
Anderson still needs to find his place in the team. I would like to see him out wider running with the ball. True he has an eye for a great pass but I reckon Carrick and Fletcher in the middle then Giggs and Anderson out wide might be worth a punt.

  32. Sunny says:

This years team has the winning instinct, when Wolfsburg scored I just felt the would pay dearly. Being one up against us is nothing to celebrate for. They all get spanked.

Great to see Carrick back he has been a very important and reliable player for us for several years, many fans are quick to forget. In fact as a midfielder these are his prime years so he will always bounce back after dips in form.

  33. King Eric says:

aig and Tony Starks – On the way home tonight Five live or Talk sport WERE praising the Rentboys. They said we had a narrow victory but when a rentboy came on saying that Chelsea look fucking shit he was saying “but you won, you have a 100% record in Europe blah blah blah”. It is pure jealousy like you say. They couldn’t wait for us to fuck up without Ronnie but now they have been made to look foolish cunts ……………………again. The team spirit in this side is fantastic and for the first time in years I never panic when we are a goal down as I know the lads drive, spirit and class will see us right. 2 out of 2 and the others nearest only have three points. To be fair though they did say that Berba was superb. Even then though they had to be negative and say that United fans don’t like his “languid” style. I am getting fucking sick to the stomach of that phrase. The man is class.

EIGHT straight wins on the bounce. We’ll never die!

  34. Drew Vader says:

Really Costas?? I thought Ando had a good game, especially in the first half. He faded a bit in the second half, but fitness has never been his strong suit really. Which to be honest, is disappointing in a CM.

And Elbarillo — I don’t recall seeing you on here before, but that was a quality post.

  35. Drew Vader says:

And…. I hate to say it, but I was disappointed with Rooney today. Another player might have been pleased with that performance, but I know Wayne is better than what he showed today. I swear he lost the ball on his first five touches. But… I guess its good he has an off day and we still get a win. But come on Wayne, lets see what you can really do on saturday.

  36. King Eric says:

Drew – I personally thought Anderson was better second half mate, making those driving runs.

To think we are still without Rafael, Van Der Sar, HARGREAVES, Orbetan (who I am very excited to see) and Ljijac.

  37. Costas says:

@Drew Vader: Something seemed off about Ando at times. To me at least. Maybe it was his passing. Not that he didn’t have a good game though. But the midfield battle is really starting to heat up! Fletch and choles started the season well, but now Ando and Carrick are slowly rediscovering their form.

I agree with you about Rooney. COuld it be that the lad is starting to feel tired? I know it’s still October, but he has played the most games he has ever played this early into a season. He has gone a bit quiet in the last few games. I hope he is back to his best against Sunderland.

  38. Sam the kenyan red says:

The midfield will be the answer to our problem(of which i dont know) we just need to get carrick to his old best, make ando hit the top gear, get hargo fit, fletcherinho and scholes to maintain their form and not overwork giggs….We shall bag the prem by december…

  39. Doghouse says:

The thing with Rooney, like any attacking player, is that if he is closely and well marked there is really only so much he can do. As it was he worked hard, made his markers work hard, nearly scored one, created the chance for the second goal and was a big part of the attack. He didn’t do much beyond that but that’s because to give credit where it’s due Wolfsburg didn’t allow him to do much more.

I would be disappointed if I saw Rooney put less than 100% into a match but tonight he gave his all. You could see it, he was playing angry. End of the day the guys who were on him didn’t make the mistakes to give him the chances. I think the fact he tried that amazing shot to the top corner indicates just how pressured he felt. If that had gone in would anybody have anything but praise for his overall performance?

  40. Doghouse says:

    @Sam The Kenyan Red

I definitely agree about not overworking Giggs. He might be superhuman, but the season is only really just getting started and I wouldn’t expect even a young player to produce what Giggs has produced so far all the way through the campaign without some spells to regroup. I mean he is rewriting the rules on what experienced players can deliver physically to a team, but we’ve got to be realistic. It’s not such a big deal though, there is so much in the United midfield, not just right now but in the longer term too, that we’re going to be sitting pretty.

  41. blindkat says:

Elbarillo you have obviously never smoked weed before or you would know that a chocolate bar can be awesome in every sense of the word.

  42. manutdchampions2008 says:

it is at times how imbarrassing it is how giggs shows valenica what it takes to play has a top class winger. no need for pace just great football intelligence how he makes such a difference to the team. velenica just lacks the goal threat and spark needed to make it at united. berbatov I will give was good tonight but he just does not do it enough week in week out. still happy we won and how the over hyped liverpol are being exposed like I said they would. and maybe come monday united will have a 2 point gap at top of the table and a good gd.

  43. cantona7 says:

@Drew Vader i agree with, Rooney should have done better. I said he looked like he was trying too hard, maybe because of SAF’s “Will the real Wayne Rooney please stand up?” before the match?

@Costas the battle for a place in the midfield surely is an interesting thing. But the width of the options, i mean, SAF has so many options to choose from, is the greatest thing. Hopefully he will choose the correct combination for each game, because that’s the key point.

  44. Devilton says:

How good was Berbatov’s first touch last night. When he came on, our passing wasn’t quite clicking. The final ball was often overhit or sliding off the slick rainy surface. Berba came on and immediately showed his CLASS. Without a doubt that was his finest performance this season and a real display of what he brings to this side. His vison and ability to find that little bit of magic is unbelivable. Once he starts to find the net with consistency like he did with spurs he will become an even frightening prospect.

  45. KungFuKick says:

    Hohohoh..the return of Carrick!
Valencia is improving surely and steadily. He`s definitely getting better and better.
    Looks very promising.

  46. hurr says:

Valencia looked great that one time when he came on through the middle. Didn’t he play in the central role for Ecuador?

  47. rbr says:

Carrick was a class act last night and im not talking about his goal which was fantastic anyway. Im talking about his presence, superb passes, crucial interceptions and tackles. He was reading the game during the game. He brought stability to the midfield. Carri On Carra!!

  48. hurr says:

Carra? Don’t you dare call our Carrick’s name with that scum name! >_>

  49. Dakota says:

MUGGAZ-mate i know you not replied to this post but just remembered our previous conversation..about Ando..I take my words back for last night’s game atleast..he was very good i thought.. :)

  50. Dakota says:

berba’s lay off to ando with his head which ando didnt quite finish was fuckin brilliant..Berba was a brilliant yesterday..

  51. CROoney says:

berbatov was immense in the first half…you know i’m his greatest critic but i’m not irrational…when i see a good performance i always recognize it

he faded in the second half when wolfsburg spotted that our only danger comes from him – and they decided to attack him more aggressively unableing him to collect the ball and personally i think this is something he should work on it – now if he can produce these perfromances without fading away from matches , every other match i think he can ultimatelly be branded as value for money

the best performance in man united shirt ..at least as far as i’m concerned

had he scored , i would have gotten him a perfect 10

  52. Jack says:

cant believe im seeing other utd fans saying get owen back to liverpool

  53. Jack says:

you only notice how much you miss berba when his not playing.

  54. CROoney says:

    Jack -same with VDS mate

  55. wazza (Bezi) says:

@Dakota : hi mate. where did you see the match ?

  56. rbr says:

    @hurr

maybe you should have noticed i praised him in my comment, and as far as i know carra is his nickname

  57. aig alex is god says:

    @wazza (Bezi)

It was live on Ten Sports.i remember that incident where berba presented ando with the chance.i think the whole team can revolve around berbas tricks and flicks which make the opposition defence look silly when they come off like yesterday.

  58. wazza (Bezi) says:

@AIG : hi mate. ya but Dakota didn’t have Ten Sports to watch. thank goodness Carlton Palmer was not there yesterday.

  59. aig alex is god says:

    @wazza (Bezi)

    Hi.
Yup.Carlton Palmer irritates me.they need to find someone much better.the ones last night were not bad though.there were also many signal problems.ten Sports is shit.Espn and star are better inspite of Steve Mcmahon being there and most of the panel being Anti United

  60. livewia says:

Berbatov = orgasms during football :-D

  61. wazza (Bezi) says:

@AIG : ya Ten Sports signal was shite for the 2 rounds of CL matches so far. but the guys on ESPN-Star(except McMahon) are far better than those on MOTD as we hear King Eric and others telling on here. John Dykes is the best presenter and he is neutral. i think Richard Keys is also the same neutral for Sky Sports. i never miss First Edition. the chemistry between Dykes and Keys is real good.

  62. aig alex is god says:

    @wazza (Bezi)

spot on. John Dykes really is good.i still like Martin Tyler and Andy Gray.they are good together.but they do only the last matches on Sunday or Early matches on Saturday.shebbie Singh makes me laught though.and there is good banter between patrick king and steve mcmahon on football forecast

  63. ash says:

i really hate steve mcmahon.bloddy dipper.he always critises united.
anyways berba was a class yesterday.happy for carrick he is a great player.
valencia was frustrating in the first half but was better in second.feeling sorry for owen he would have been selected for england.hope he is fit against liverfools.

  64. wazza (Bezi) says:

@AIG : Patrick King Horn irritates McMahon so much. just love it. i think we get the same broadcast of Sky Sports commentators for all the league matches.

  65. Tufty says:

    Viva United,
    Viva United,
    Once more we’ll reign,
    This time in Spain,
    Winning in Madrid.

  66. exiledred says:

    Good game. Plus points:

Berba – absolute quality. Especially in the 1st half. Wolfsburg stuck a marker on him in the 2nd half which reduced his effectiveness but he finds acres of space. Utd’s midfield still need to learn how to look for him.

Carrick – grew as the game progressed and the goal would have done him the world of good.

Anderson – very impressive at time. Still a little wasteful but looking much stronger.

Evra – just love this guy.

Negatives: None really – apart from the Owen injury. This was still way short of Utd at full pelt but we still could have scored 6. Looking good…

  67. trevor says:

    Lads,

I have seen a drastic change in Berbatov this season, he loooks more at home playing for us.

He is starting to contribute and enabling himt o relax and play his normal game! The more goals and assists this guy gets the better he is going to play.

No on can deny that he has fantastic ability to Bring the Ball Undercontrol, Bring Others into play and Hold defenders off with ball at his feet…

  68. ZD Casuals says:

I feel the win was justified. We brought all the pressure (as we should, being the home team) and if only we weren’t too wasteful in front of goal, the scoreline would have better represented the game.

Personally, I was getting frustrated with the offside trap they were springing. It seemed to work every time. Pretty well disciplined. I do feel that one of the goals that was disallowed wasn’t offside and was pretty miffed.

Giggs brought us back with the goal, and I think it was his reaction to it that sums up his experience and class. No over celebration, and I think you can see it at the end of the video above – while Rooney is congratulating him, Giggs waves him away and gives a “Job not done, let’s get on with it…” look!

  69. Fze123 says:

frustrating game yesterday because of all the chances we missed. we should’ve won by 5-1. still a good win though, team played very well. to think that we’re missing hargo, vds etc.. and played like we did yesterday is really incredible. evra, giggs, carrick, ando, valencia were superb. rooney was unlucky to score, he had about 7 shots at goal.

feeling sorry for owen though. it was his chance to play infront of capello, imo fergie shouldn’t have started him. he should’ve been given a rest. hopefully he’ll recover quickly, an impact supersub is very vital especially in the PL games when we’re drawing/losing.

  70. Kings says:

Sir Ryan instrumental again. Great strike from Carrick, need to see more of that from him. I’ve always said he can hit a ball sweetly, just as good as Alonso in my opinion.
