The comparisons are Nick Powell at 18 vs Gibson at 18, or Danny at 18.
Except for the odd game for Pogba (19) or Tunni(19) you really don’t expect our youngsters to be first teamer regulars until they are pushing 21.

The famous Community Shield team of last year still averaged 22yo. Only looked that young because of
DeGea 19, Cleaverley 21, and Phil Jones 19, Danny 20.

Nick should be viewed as someone who will be developed. Just as all our 18-22yo signings. 2-3 years is huge for this age. This view even puts Chicharito in the frame of a developing player.

Powell is 18, he has played for England juniors, he can play at pace with both feet, he only cost 2M as the initial fee, that is not bad. Lets not come in with the hype that Phil Jones (future england captain) has been saddled with. Bit much and not fair to the lads involved.

Fergie himself said that Powell is under development. And even if he didn’t have to adapt to a new position, I couldn’t see him breaking into the first team during the 12-13 season. Parry is right that you can’t expect someone who joined us from Crewe to make an immediate impact. He needs time. So that being said, we still don’t know how our midfield has improved this summer. Scholes and Giggs will be a year older, Fletcher unfortunately is on the verge of retirement and we’ve lost Pogba. Taking a gamble on Carrick avoiding any injuries again the way I look at it.

My last comment was in reference to your Greece comment.

As for our midfielders, the numbers alone aren’t my problem. Technically, we are covered. But when you start analyzing each player, you can’t help but worry. Some players are in the twilight of their career, others have cast doubts over their ability to stay injury free for an extended period of time and others (Tunni and Powell) are too young to be depended on. And then we have Carrick. but how much longer can we depend on him. He had an exhausting season in 11-12 and even though he didn’t go to the Euros, you have to wonder if he can do it all over again. Jones is someone that could offer a breath of fresh air there (especially in games where we will need a midfield destroyer), but that will also depend on Rafael staying fit, so that Jones doesn’t have to cover for him. A lot of fragile balance as I like to say in this squad..

It’s already a success mate, but if they manage to lift the trophy, that will be awesome. Greece have a tendency to do well in these younger categories.

Yeah, there are some talented youngsters coming through. And the senior side is also getting renewed over the last 2 years. The problem with young Greek players is that it doesn’t take a lot for their heads to reach the clouds. That’s why they fail to repeat their successes with the senior team. From what I’ve seen there are 1-2 potential Karagounis’ replacements. In terms of ability anyway. You can’t replace his expressions though.

Lets be real about Powell.

He’s 18, he won’t even play Carling Cup. He might come on a sub in those games against Huddersfield but not in a slightly hard carling cup tie against Middlesbrough. Did Pogba play all of them? Nope.

Powell needs gym work, fitness work and needs reserve football to educate him. He has to get used to the quality of being surrounded by players 100x better and experienced than him in reserve/ 1st squad. He has to catch up with others his age. Look at Aaron Ramsey and Oxlade down at Arsenal, they’ve been eased in the best way possible, even then it’s been fast tracked because of the hype.

Nick Powell will be luck to get 90 minutes next season. He should consider it a bonus getting cameo appearances in the FA cup, Carling Cup and on Tour he’ll play the odd game…but only for us and SAF to get some inside info on the boy.

I don’t want to see no Pogba vs Powell bullshit….utter crap, both very different players. Pogba is a very talented guy, was tipped to be the next Scholes for us before he left, now that he’s gone doesn’t mean his football brain is thrown out the window. He’s still big and promising. Tbh we know nothing of Powell,lets not sing and dance about him yet.

Powell’s one for the future probably, I look forward to seeing him in action.

United come knocking, present an offer and these agents tap up other richer (by means of higher transfer and wage packages) clubs saying, this is what United are offering. A City (in Silvas case) comes back with twice the fee there goes our decisiveness out the window. I truly believe Kagawa could have gone elsewhere for more money. But he wanted to wear the shirt. It’s been confirmed Jones had higher bids ahead of us, but he wanted to wear the shirt. I think we all can agree (well, no, fucking of course not, what a shit blog that’d be) that De Gea was a nice coup but once again, the player, wanted to wear the shirt. Undecisive? No not for me. Times have changed with players and their agents wanting a cut of the big money on offer at Shitty, chelsea and now PSG. I’m sorry to say it but we can’t compete in our present finacial position. If these said players like Silva, Villa, Hazard etc had really wanted to come to Utd because we are Manchester Utd then they’d be here now weather we offered less money or not. David Villa was always going to Barca, he’s Spanish so you can’t blame him wanting to stay in his home country. In the end it all comes down to agents demands.

Lucas has the technical, physical, and mental assets to make him a danger for any opposition. Interesting line-ups. I can’t see us going 4-3-2-1 though in any game. That removes the key attribute that differentiates Untied from the rest which is width. I cannot imagine Sir Alex going into a match without two proper wingers. He may add an extra mid-fielder and remove the extra striker or vice-versa but the two wingers are going to be ever-present.

From what we’ve been discussing so far, 4-2-3-1 seems to be the way to go. Though that would make Rooney a guaranteed starter in every game. But I think that would give us a lot of flexibility. The front 4 which can be made up of Valencia, Kagawa, Rooney, Nani, Young, or Welbeck all can play in multiple positions (except Tony V). It would be great to see us go back to the days of Ronaldo-Tevez-Rooney with players switching about. And with Chicharito, we can always use him to do the job he does best, score goals. If he can work out the timing of beating the offside trap better (Mental Note: Watch a lot of RVN and Inzaghi), then together with Kagawa he could really forge a potent partnership.

I think we really can’t help but be excited about what we’ve got so far. Really, the only person we’re lacking is the terrier in mid-field. I would love for us to sign someone from outside. But maybe Sir Alex is looking for Jones to completely take over that role or maybe even give Tunnicliffe a go.

But for now, bring on pre-season.

2 things about those linesups. Smalling at right back should be a last resort. Young instead of Nani, I can see happening. However, in a 4-5-1 formation we will need both Valencia and Nani starting if we don’t want to struggle to create openings.

Logic will say powell needs time to adjust, of course he does but with ability and belief which powell seems to possess in abundance, we can’t rule him out showcasing his potential as soon as possible. I think he’ll get opportunities, it’s important for his growth and development.

Looking at kagawa and powell, we can see two measured and intelligent young players. They both know taking the leap from their previous clubs is one thing but performing for united is another giant step. They’re grounded and are ready to put in the work required. I hope they become huge stars for the club.

Reading anderson’s interview last night, i’m really not sure what to think. Personally, after 5years, he’s had more than enough time to prove himself but FERGIE seems to have that crucial trust in him and perhaps a good player is hidden in him willing to be unlocked.

Another season dawns and another chance beckons. I have no problems with that but he needs to avoid injuries, he requires fortune on that part. In terms of fitness however, the papa johns pizzas need to be eradicated, he needs to know that becoming a quality player at united is more important than getting his belly blown up and turning into a hula hoop belly dancer. I want to see hunger, drive and improvements in several aspects of his game. He can fight for a place and judging by his comments, he badly wants to prove point. Doing that on the pitch is what most fans want to see. Again, i hope it goes well for him but he needs to remember that as much as matters beyond the realms of his powers can be detrimental, his own choices can and will be crucial.

We have players in the squad acknowledging the privilege of having a new season and an opportunity to construct their flailing potential. Macheda and anderson are players that would give me the most joy if they could step and be top players. They have it within their reach.

It really is surprising how skint we are on the fullback side. And unless we get Baines or someone else, things are going to get really tough for us on that side. The thing is we have people to cover at FB positions – Jones, Smalling, Evans, Valencia, maybe even Giggs – but again this forces people playing out of position and we lose those people where they are best played. It really is like losing two players. And that is what happened to us a lot last season. One injury led to two shifts of position and we were left wanting sometimes. I really don’t want to see that happen again.

Spot on. I’m pretty sure Sir Alex said that Powell will stay in and around the first team, training etc. I think this tells us all we need to know about what Sir Alex thinks of the lad and how he’s going to progress.

I’ve got to hold my hands up, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this Lucas lad play, just heard the usual plaudits that you get from every brazilian youngster with talent! So can’t say I’m excited by the Daily Fails article. In fact, I think I’d sooner we didn’t get this lad. He’s already said he’s not bothered where he plays, he just wants to play football so even if he did come and was a success, he’d be packing his bags in a year or two…. steer clear in my view.

Personally I prefer Jones at right back mate. He has better forward runs compared to Smalling. Same goes for his crossing (like we saw at Sunderland and Bolton last season). Other than the Blackpool OG at the end of the 10-11 season, I don’t remember any decent Smalling crosses. On the other hand, Smalling at right back helps us in a different manner. We have more of an aerial presence at set pieces.

Quite frankly, I don’t want to see either player at full back, but we can’t avoid it I am afraid. Rafael won’t be fit all season. Plus, as we saw at the end of last season, Rafael could lose his spot if he makes crucial errors again.

Costas, Yup, I prefer Smalling on the defensive end and Jones when it comes to his offense. But both have flaws which make them not preferable for the rightback position. But if we look at it that way, Tony V is arguably our best option at RB. Going forward, he will have great chemistry with our attacking players, and his immense upper body strength allows him to stop almost any offensive winger, barring someone who is really good like maybe Ronaldo. However, again that leaves a major gap in our wing department.

Unfortunately, relying on Rafael to complete a season uninjured is always going to leave us in these situations.

Big season for rafael. I’m hoping he steers clear off injuries because he’s a class act and a little battling terrier. His all action marauding runs forward typifies the brazilian in him. I hope he has and will continue to improve defensively, he can be prone to a lapse in concentration and can be too eager with his challenges but that happens to younger players. Rafael has gathere crucial experience both in the league and europe and i hope he’ll use that to his advantage and become a top player for united. I think he’ll be the nailed on first choice in that position this season. The fact mano menezes will pick him as his first choice for brazil in the olympics says it all.

MikeKelly – exactly, united need to continue to do everything to improve younger players. Training, learning and playing in matches with first team players will help the likes of nick powell.
