England took on Bulgaria in a World Cup qualifying game on Monday. After seven minutes, Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford opened the scoring with a brilliant goal.

Ross Barkley scored twice to make it 3-0 before half-time but the first 45 minutes will sadly be better remembered for the racist abuse from the home supporters.

With 25 minutes on the clock, there was a break in play when the racist abuse was reported to the referee and a public announcement to ask the supporters to stop. Just before half-time, Gareth Southgate made another complaint to the referee, with the monkey chants still clearly audible. Plenty of Bulgarian fans were seen heading towards the exit shortly afterwards.
