Welbeck: England? I’m Like Any Manc Concentrating On United

After scoring a brilliant goal in his debut during our 5-0 battering of Stoke last season, Sir Alex Ferguson tipped Danny Welbeck for a big International future, as well as with United.

Welbeck scored our only goal in a 1-0 win over Wolves this week, where we played with ten men for an hour of the match, and says he’s more concerned with his United career than with England.

“I didn’t know Sir Alex had said that about England but it doesn’t drive me on,” said Welbeck. “It’s a great plus to hear it but I’m really just concentrating on Manchester United at the moment. I suppose I’m just like any other normal Manc boy, really. To be given the chance to play for United is a dream. I am always willing to go when asked. I need to carry on training hard and get more first-team chances. But that’s the aim of all the young boys here. We’re just looking forward to the next round now, so just play as many youngsters as possible, Fergie!”

LOL. The last line; did Welbeck say it or is it you Scott?

What the hell, is this real? haha excellent if true!

    Welbeck> in ger land
I couldnt believe that he is only a full united player 1 year cause the guy has alot to come from him. He’s a player who can play up front as well as out wide. Sir Alex Ferguson has said he’s like Nwankwo Kanu in style.
I think he has a bright future in football thou im not fully sure if it will be at united. but i hope it will be.
better than kaka and tevez http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8tcqaksiho

I think it might have been Scott’s conscience speaking because it is in our blood. United > England no doubt

  5. Marley says:

I can see where the Kanu comparisons come from, because his running style is a little awkward, but I think it is also fair to compare his playing style to none other than Thierry Henry. Watch his goal against Derby (i think) and you’ll see what I mean.

  6. Scott the Red says:

    Dozer – it’s all Welbeck.

  7. aig alex is god says:

    good morning everyone

the lad looks top drawer and has a bright future at United.lets not put too much pressure on him or get carried away.Everyone is not a Wayne Rooney.we should give him atleast 2-3 years.tillthat time Owen Berba can hold fort and then macheda and welbeck will hopefully be mature enough to take over.

ghtt. How are you? still in the hospital?

  8. aig alex is god says:

also from Danny’s comments it looks as if there is healthy competition between the young lads.thats always good to see. and with ole in charge of these young lads i am not at all worried

  9. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    A.i.g. Im home thank you
I remember Sir Alex saying that Danny Welbeck could well be in the England squad for the 2010 World Cup. If thats the case, he must be going to play him quite a lot to get him a call up and i think its not gonna be in a striker position I can see Sir Alex playing him alot on the left wing in carling cup / fa cup games to try get him noticed as a left winger because thats the really doggy part of the Ingerland team in the left wing

  10. Chadwick says:

    Welbeck wouldnt call SAF ‘Fergie’

  11. sir_ryangiggs says:

i know this is off topic but does anyone has any idea what happened to rafael? fergie said in his programme notes he will play but he didnt even get on the bench?

  12. aig alex is god says:

    ghtt

well he is just 18 so i think next years world cup is a long shot.maybe the European Championship 2012 could be a target if england Qualify(?)

No point in just taking him like Walcott in 2006 and not using him at all.rather give him time and i am sure he will become a big future star.

  15. gnuh says:

Its just the answer that I expect, really. Because if he says otherwise, Fergie will take note on him and we probably will not see him for a while. lol

  16. aig alex is god says:

    ghtt

correct but i dont want him to jsut be in the squad.let him stay back at Carrington and develop more because as the seasons go by he will play a more important role.so that would be better i guess.no point just going and returning without playing a single game.

  17. Tufty says:

To be honest, I dont think the lads good enough for Utd, never mind international level. He has pace and thats about his main atribute to his game. Yes, he scored a good goal the other night, but hundreds of people have done that in a utd sirt at an early age.
He has played a lot of game sout wide due to his pace, rather than through the middle as a goal threat.
He lacks the physical presence that Macheda brings (Who again doesnt quite look the real deal). He’s almost in the same vein as Campbell, who pace apart doesnt offer muvh more.
These to would benefit more from a decent loan spell in the championship.

Josh King and John Cofie look a lot more promising and are ones definately to keep an eye out for.

Fabian Brandy is superbly skillful, but lacks any presence and strength whih is needed at the top level.

  18. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    @Tufty
If what you wrote was wrote by anyone else i would get into a football chat about it
but it was wrote by yourself who just writes stupid negative things to get a reply
so you’ve got my reply now and if you ever get on this site with something smart to say then you may get further replys
    nice talking to you

  19. aig alex is god says:

    @Tufty

Why do you always like to say opp\osite of what has been said? you always make such negative statements.have some faith in fergie.you think he is a fool to make these comments after having watched lakhs of players over last 30 years. plus welbeck is just 18.give him some time.same things were being said about ronaldo when he was 18 and look what happened after that.

why do you have to be so negative every time?

  20. Tufty says:

Negative or experessing a view based on seeing all of Wellbecks first team appearances in the flesh and a hell of a lot of his reserve games.

The reserve standard is very low, so its easy to shine at that level and easy to score goals. With Utd first team chances are limited and in todays world, when a lad reaches 18 years old, they need a level of constant first team games.

As stated, I dont think either Wellbeck or Macheda have looked the part in any of the first team games they have played to date. Yes they are only young and will benefit from experience, hence me saying they could do with a year in the Championship.
Wellbeck at times has looked quite scared. He gets knocked off the ball very easily and his main asset is pace.
When Rooney was 16, he came onto the pitch and people knew he was there, he put himself about, I cant think of many other 16 year olds who have done that. Jack Wiltshire at Arsenal looks decent an Walcott had a lot of pace at Southampton, but also had a goal and attacking threat.

Its early days for both Macheda and Wellbeck and chances with Utd will be very limited. I hope we go all the way in the Carling Cup playing reserve team players, as last years final impacted quite a lot on those first teamers who played after the 120 mins on a heavy Wembley pitch.

Heres to a nice tie against a lower league side in the next round to test the likes of Wellbeck.

  21. jandsdad says:

I reckon welbeck will get a clip round the ear from the boss for calling him Fergie.

  22. Scott the Red says:

Chadwick – according to the Evening News and every other paper running it, he did call him Fergie.

  23. aig alex is god says:

    Scott

no ‘view from the enemy’ ahead of tomorrows match? Usually you do it a day before the match and tomorrows match is a tricky one.

  24. Tony Starks says:

England? The guy has just played one game this year! Is the England team that crap?

  25. King Eric says:

Heard his interview and thought “thats the way lad”!. United > Ingerlund.

I must admit I wasn’t too keen on Danny as a player at first but has shown when given the chance what he is all about. Just wait till he fills out he will be a real handful. Class finisher.

    Morning by the way.

  26. aig alex is god says:

    king eric

    hi.good morning

agree there.but SAF still uses him on the wings and prefers Kiko upfront.dunno why? even though i dont feel Macheda is a superior finisher compared to Welbeck.

  27. King Eric says:

Tufty – ” Heres to a nice tie against a lower league side in the next round to test the likes of Wellbeck”.

Fuck that mate unless an away tie. I certainly don’t want to have to spend forty five fucking quid to watch a third tier side. Bring on the dippers or bitters I say.

  28. Park's Dog says:

    Tufty
Wellbeck & Kiko will always look crap compared to a 16yr old Rooney!! Every striker at that age would!

Rooney was a boxer before… these lads are still filling out!

Whether you have seen ALL their games since they were 5yrs old or even trained with the lads every other day, you can’t underestimate the impact they have made on their senior debuts/games and their future contribution! As Fergie has a better viewpoint than all of us!

And wellbeck’s main attributes are his footwork & finishing!
Every 18yr old striker has bloody pace!..

I have to agree with AIG & GHTT that you are an opportunistic cynic on this topic.

The lads are young and have scored in most competitions. They proved too good for reserves and Fergie promoted them to the first team for what they can produce. Have faith! They are the 6ft+ strikers that we will need in a couple of years & we will have them for virtually nothing! :O)

  29. onemanunited.wordpress.com says:

You can’t compare any1 with Rooney! He use to volley the ball when he was 2 years old!- According to his father!

Tufty, you’re making me lose every respect I had for SEF!

And Tufty you have no right to judge him! I’m pretty sure he plays 10x better than u. So get a life, stop slating the players & learn to respect the team!

  30. Callum says:

On the contrary. There are a lot of ‘pace and bugger all else’ young English players at the moment (Aston Villa are by far the worst offenders) but Welbeck isn’t one of them. As we saw, he can finish, and he has the close control that goes with the pace. Remember when he skinned the Spurs defence?

  31. Muggaz says:

interesting. I am still sitting on the fence as far as Welbeck is concerned, and Kiko as well… I simply haven’t seen enough of them, but if I am honest with myself, neither has done anything to really excite me about the prospects of this team, aside of course from Kiko’s goal against the Villa last season – that was the only game Kiko has played with the first team that he has truely looked like scoring… the Sunderland goal was defo more ass than class.

I can only hope these guys develop into world class players- which is what they need to do to remain at United. It’s hard to judge them whilst they are so youmg, but I don’t see them becoming anything other than also rans, probably at second rate clubs like Everton or Spurs…

I really hope they proove me wrong.

  32. exiledred says:

The thing that impresses me most about Welbeck so far is his ability to adapt to any position along the front line. He’s not a winger but he’s made 2-3 appearances out on the flanks and done really well. Add to that his obvious knack of scoring goals, his positional play and deceptive pace and we could have a winner here. I do think the “Fergie” reference will earn him a cuff round the ear though :-)

  33. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    exiledred
he plays on the left flank alot in the reserves and he does a great job
Get gibson into the first team first

  34. exiledred says:

GHTT – I like what I’ve seen of Gibson but, like all players, he would benefit from a regular place in the team. I presume you’d stick him alongside Fletch?

  35. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

i think himself a fletcher would play amazing together in ascholes keane type way as in each can attack and each can defend and when one is attacking the other is defending, thou anderson seems to have lost what ever had him in first gear last season and is back to been the player we all know he is and can be
carrick is lost at united at the moment for reasons i cant understand
and our curly headed ladys man will be back in 4 weeks sir alex is saying so there is stiff compitution for Gibson , and there in lies the real measure of a man and a football

  36. King Eric says:

Spot on about Gibbo gotta hate. For 21 years old the lad looks quality. Its not just the way he gets stuck in, passes and shoots but his positional sense. Whenever our full backs get forward he is the one slotting into their positions to cover them. Gonna be great this lad.

Hargo back playing in 4 weeks! To think the amount of clueless bastards all summer demanding we sign Van der Vaart and the like as our midfield is “shit” and “weak”.

  37. theboogeyman says:

Yeah,Gibbo’s a quality young player.Hargo’s back in 4 weeks. Ando,Scholes,Giggs, and Fletcher are in brilliant form.
Carrick is quality as well, but seems to have lost his confidence.Hopefully he’ll get it back soon.

And to think people were calling our midfield weak.

  38. Gudjohnsen says:

    Welbeck has the right spirit.

    United > England

Can’t wait to see Hargo again!

  39. Tufty says:

He probably plays 100 timesbetter than me, not 10 times!!!!!
As a paying fan, Im entitled to judge players, isnt that what Utd fans forums etc are for?

As for SEF, i make these comments under my name, not that fo SEF.
SEF has 6 other people who help run the group, not just myself.

I have a funny feeling Carrick might be off in Jan. Very string rumours in the summer he was being offloaded, with a return to Spurs on the cards.
If Hargreaves stays fit and with Llarjic (Spelling) coming over in Jan, we will have quite a few midfield options, with strong rumours on Silva signing in Jan as well.

  40. King Eric says:

Tufty – You may well be right about Carrick. Although like they say form is temporary class is permanent. He will regain his form.

  41. Welbz19 says:

Carrick is a class player just in a bad run of form! He will get back to his his best soon enough!!
As for welbeck I think he’s a class player sometimes his touch is a bit heavy but I think that’s maybe cos he’s not filled out fully yet! He’s got everything pace, skill, finishing and he works really hard for the team unlike kiko!

  42. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    i think
    NOW ONCE AGAIN I THINK
so dont start blahing about how im wrong there no fact of it but
I think Sir Alex laid into the midfield before the start of the season
Last seasons champions league final the midfield where outplayed big time
i think he would have said we have 4 players who can do it
    Scholes Giggs Ronaldo and Fletcher
ronaldos gone and Scholes and Giggs are not 90 minuite twice a week players
so whos gonna play with fletcher
is it An-der-son-son-son who had 1 to many below performances last season
nani – who had 1 or 2 good performances last seasons
carrick – who ,althou a broken toe, was lost
They needed to pick up there game
I think Anderson took the message and after already fighting with sir alex got on with it
i think nani took the message and started pre season well but has quickly dropped in to the rut
    Gibson-hopfully was listen
And now Hargreeves is coming back
its all about attitude in the eyes of Sir Alex Ferguson

  43. denton davey says:

King Eric – Carrick’s best form was good in a terrific team; he is not the kind of guy to raise the level of team play. He does his job – but nothing more. And, when he does his job, he doesn’t do it in a breathtaking fashion. He’s a solid pro – nothing more, despite the hype.

For Carrick, the worrying thing has to be that he’s competing for a position with Fletcherinho, who is 25 and just now coming into his own as the top-notch player SAF envisioned, as well as Anderson who isn’t even 21 and Gibson who is under 22, both of whom are looking to become consistently excellent at the level expected of a UTD midfielder. That’s seriously difficult competition – not to mention the renascent Ginger Ninja, the marvel that is Ryan Giggs, ThreeLungPark and – ?????? – the Canadian-born ManchesterTerrier, Owen Hargreaves.

IF Carrick can’t raise his game waaaaaaaaay above what he showed on Wednesday then he’s going out the door for about half of what SAF paid for him – not a bad deal, though, considering that he did a job for a team that won an EPL trifecta.

  44. denton davey says:

About Welbeck – the jury has to be out. He’s just a kid.

He has pace, ball control, and vision/anticipation; but does he have the consistency and physical presence to raise his game because those three attributes only make him a “prospect”.

The optimist will say that he will “grow into” that consistency as his body/strength increases and he matures into a solid professional warrior; the pessimist would say that we’ve heard this song before.

He’s a very different proposition from Wayne Rooney who was a man-child and about as good a player at 16/17 as one is EVER likely to see. What separates Wayne Rooney from other prospects is his incredible “fire in the belly”. For Danny Welbeck to raise his game he needs some of that passion, too. And – like KikoTheKid – he needs to stay away from Facebook and those bottled-blonde spice girls !

  45. Tony Starks says:

No one is leaving in January people that is for sure – Carrick still has a lot to offer, it’s unfair to write him off so soon. Very much doubt anyone will be arriving either, apart from the confirmed ones..

We have this Obertan guy waiting in the ‘wings’ (hehe), i wonder how he will do

  46. Park's Dog says:

“To think the amount of clueless bastards all summer demanding we sign Van der Vaart and the like as our midfield is “shit” and “weak”.”

    lol! Well said King Eric!
I remember the likes of manutdchampions2009 comin on here and saying we should buy Van der Vart, Silva, Aguero and Doogie Costa (and any1 with a youtube compilation video!?) because our mid is ‘weak’.
Tufty, I wouldn’t pay too much attention to rumours! & Lladjic is a winger so no threat to Carrick at all. The only threat to Carrick is himself…
    “Offloading”?? You’re a joker mate!

Off topic, I’d love to see us play 4-3-3 with Gibbo/Hargo & fletcher holding, Ando/Scholes attacking Mid, Rooney left cutting in, Valencia on the right and Berba holding fort up top! I murda my mates on ISS for fun with that formation!!!

  47. bigphil2003 says:

“When Rooney was 16, he came onto the pitch and people knew he was there, he put himself about, I cant think of many other 16 year olds who have done that. ”

Daft comment to make, surely that’s the point – not everyone (anyone?) is like Rooney so why make the comparison? Obviously it’s too early to judge Welbeck (or Macheda) properly but from what I’ve seen of him he looks to be a good prospect, finding good positions, good touch and great finisher.

long live welbeck…quality player…he will make it here easy

  51. wazza (Bezi) says:

@King Eric, Park’s Dog : yeah some of them here started the shite about our midfield and it was after the Burnley game i remember. one was keanesmagichat who wanted to …. Carrick. so immature fans some of them are.

  52. RedDeviled Egg says:

Off topic. But why in the hell is Fergie insisting on playing Foster??? I think it’s to cover his own ass for claiming how great Foster is.
Kuszack desrves the spot…..3 weeks til VDS returns…hopefully that’s just a conservative estimate and he’s back in between the posts. I’m tired of seeing Foster make a total joke of himself every game

  53. John Ferry says:

As stated earlier by someone, Welbeck reminds me a little of Thierry Henry. The future for United looks bright, we have a plethora of young talent up front and in the middle. The only concern is right now is Rio. Is he getting up there in age ? or does he just need more games ?

  54. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    RedDeviled Egg
you seen the P.I.G. on wednesday
his confidence is high and can be called on if needed anytime
if foster is dropped now that will shatter his confidence

  55. Tufty says:

Foster is a superb keeper and cant understand how anyone in the right mind would want Kuszack ahead of him.
Kuszack is terrible at crosses, causes panic in the defence and has much worse kicking than Fosters, the only attribute he has, is that hes a decent shot stopper.
Could you imagine Kuszack in amongst Stokes long balls and long throw ins, it would be disaster.
Fosters performed decent in the games he has played and as for the goals he’s conceded, most of them have been the result of poor defending.
Rio had a hand in all 3 City goals last week.

  56. RedDeviled Egg says:

    Tufty,
Could you imagine Foster against City???
He’s a hack. He’s been it all season. Kuszack deserves a start.
If Foster’s constant mistakes and fuck ups don’t cause panic and uneasiness for his defenders i don’t know what would.

I guess gifting every team you play is a ‘decent’ set of performances for you.
I don’t give a shit if it breaks his confidence. Live in the now. If you want to play you have to be the best. End of story. He’s screwed up so he needs to live with it.

  57. Tufty says:

As stated, Fosters a decent keeper.
Look at the gaos conceded against City and you can only partially blame Foster for the 1st one, which was poor defending by Rio. If you look at Ferdinands performane he played a part in all 3 goals we conceded.

    I take it either -
A – You know nothing about football
B- You have attended very few Utd games.
C- You form your opinion from the gutter press

  58. RedDeviled Egg says:

    Tufty,
I regret to inform you that you may fall under all options that you have provided. I watch every single United game. Don’t question my football knowledge. You know nothing of me. I know Foster screws up big time.
I take in all press that I can find that has to do with United. I think you’d agree that The Sun provides the most in depth and knowledgable articles that are written based solely on documented facts.(I hope you understand sarcasm) You obviously take this blog too seriously if you’re throwing personal insults at me within your second response to my posts
I know Rio was definitely primarily to blame for for the 3rd goal. I haven’t denied that.
If you blame anyone other than Foster for the first one you are completely blind. That mistake was nobody’s fault but his. Admit it. He’s prone to mistakes.
Kuszack is a decent keeper too. Why can’t he get a chance to prove himself??

  59. Drew Vader says:

Egg — PIG has had his chances, and he hasn’t exactly been Buffon either. Fergie is still pissed at him for gifting Blackburn a goal and ending our scoreless record.

Fuck me I agree with Tufty…. Please forgive me lads!

  60. King Eric says:

Got to agree with Tufty about the keeper situation. If people think Ben will flap at crosses and long throws at the Brittania what do they think PIG will do? Awful at crosses. Roll on Edwin’s return!

    it just gets boring
if scott did a post that simply said Giggs is great
some people would just slate him cause he’s old
or when was the last time he scored a goal like he did against coventry

  64. King Eric says:

Tufty – Not sure Rio was at fault for the first goal. Contrary to what has been written on here it wasn’t a pass back but a wayward ball from Lescott and Foster should have just banged it in to row z. Still think Foster should start tomorrow though.

  65. Tufty says:

So Rio played no part in Fosters error for Citys first?
Of all the goals we have conceded this season, thats about the only one you can partly blame Foster for.
3 seasons back, end of 2006/2007 and at the start of the 2007/2008 season, there were enough people calling for VDS to be dropped or step down based on a few errors.
