Congratulations to Chris Smalling who has been called up to the England squad for the first time. After impressing for the U-21, Smalling is one of the eight defenders that Fabio Capello has named in his squad for a friendly against France on Wednesday.
Two years ago he was playing for the Isthmian League side Maidstone United.
Well done Chris.

Man Utd News 24/7

Good on ya lad! I was very skeptical about Smalling when he first signed. But I think he has come along in fine style and has been saying all the right things about his role as apprentice to Vidic and Rio. Seems very confident on the ball and going forward. Has 2 good headed goals for us this season as well. Could be a top player.
Congrats to the lad.
CLUB IN DECLINE! SMALLING IS RUBBISH! FERGIE IS WASHED UP FOR NOT SPENDING £30 MIL PER SIGNING!
Went to watch the match with My brother today and we seen Jonny Evans and my Brother said – Smalling has come out of nowhere and done a number on Evans career hasnt he.
He really has and thats all to do with Jonny showing his young age and smalling showing his real maturity.which could well come from not getting a trial with the biggest club in the world sign play for the reserves an buy a classic BMW to drive to reserve team training.
Evans is a clueless shitbag
@ Manchuchu Bet you anything you’ll be singing his name for the next 10 years. People tend to froget his age. It’s ridiculous the expectations that people push on him. His still learning, so give him time. Plus CB is a specially hard position to learn. Exp is crutial, and he can only get that with time, so be patient.
Can’t understand why anybody would say that about a United player.
As it is though I think Evans is a very promising young defender who perhaps got thrown into the deep end without enough support. When he’s been called in to play for us it’s almost always been because of other injuries and it’s very often been during quite unsettled times. By the normal run of things a player impresses in training, then gets his shot. That luxury was never afforded to Evans who had to step up at the highest level, for the greatest club in the world, when he was a long way from ready. And he did okay.
As for Smalling though, a great signing. He’s got good skills which I like to see on a defender, because that good first touch and short pass adds a whole new level of composure at the back. He has not yet had to do as much defending as Evans, under the same circumstances, but I really think he’s doing well.
Doghouse,
“Can’t understand why anybody would say that about a United player.”
Trolls I think.
Apart from that, Evans is young. And I remembered how he did well covering up when our normal back had an injury spree last season. Dip in form is normal and esp. forgivable when ur at his age. I think he’d be just fine.
”cant understand why anybody will say that about a united player”
Hypocrisy that is what its all about, when mr ambition lays into our squad its a big no no, while its common for fans to single out their own players and critisize them with derogatory terms its a shame though because players like evans and gibson seem like they are united through and through.
Here here.well done smalling
but he is yet to prove himself for united.he is not being tested because our defence is quite strong although we have conceeded after taking the lead in most of the games.save vidic for the big games.and give smalling and evans the chance.
What do you mean United through and through?! It is not just about the mentality, it is also about skill! Gibson definitely lacks it right now and Evans needs to sort his head out soon! Lot of us love the club and we want the best playing for us! Just because we think a player is shite does not mean we are hypocrites. Blind faith has no place in football!
Hate 2 say dis…bt i think gibson has that special place dat fergie has 4 o’shea bcuz i dnt knw why players like osh*t and gibson shuld be playing 4 man utd. I say loan gibson and bring back the talented cleverly… We nid talent and brain in our mid field not some nutmegs…and as 4 evans he nids 2 sort out his head…chris is nw our third choice centre half ahead of evans and behind rio and vida…..lastly owen and berbatov also hargreaves shuld b moved on in d summer along with gary nevile 2 create space 4 d young stars like rafa, cleverley, eikrem, josh king and anderson.
Great to hear! I hope he gets to play a bit. I heard that Carrick wasn’t called up and Barry was? Wtf?
@Doghouse
You don’t know Manchuchu well enough. One of the finest trolls out there.
Evans? You mean that bloke who held his own against Drogba and Fat Boy at the young age of 20?
Oh yes,the most clueless shitbag there ever was.
well done Fab. well done Cris. where are all the haters and pessimists now. anyone remember Rooney and his band of the mediocre signings fame. look at Cris and Bebe now. in SAF we believe
I’ll admit that I was sceptical about the Smalling signing at first, but I am glad that wasn’t the case. My main hope was that like Stam, his game would elevate once he wore the red. I just hope that he will continue improving the next few seasons. Evans is proof that first seasons aren’t always the toughest..
wellllllllll done lad
For those who are quick to jump on Evans’ back I say, do you remember that record breaking run of clean sheets? Rio was out of most those games and Evans was partnering Vidic and he was brilliant. With a little more experience and a good boost of confidence he will be great.
Well done to Smalling whom I think will have a bright future, he appears to be better than Evans technically speaking. I do see them both as eventual replacements from both Rio & Vidic
Off topic… a bit of trivia fun…
Did you guys know that Sir Alex actually played for United in a friendly whilst he was the boss? well yes he did, if anyone gives the right answer than I will ship you a nice lollipop! lol
I meant the details not answer…..
@dela ; nice, thats what is needed long term memory.
Evans did all that and more,he is the future of our defence, his game is like Vidic, while
Smalling is similiar to that of Rio.
For some reason Evans looked stressed out at the start of this season, did not do as well as he could, hope now that he is off the firing line,he can regain his levels, come back later this month in the Carling Cup and be brilliant.
Looks like Fergie is on the right road on this one. Chris and Jonny our future centrebacks.
There few others like Gill,Chester trying to get in as well, would be interesting to see how they do.
Craig Cathart who is also a N.irish youngster, took a similiar route as Evans ,quickly moved into the reserves /first team but the final evaluation he did not make the cut,he is now Blackpools new centreback.
Keep the faith.
I hope my comment didntcome across as ashot at jonny E it was that Smalling has come in and took that 3 choice role – but both are so young one is just Chris is ahead
man this dry spell is killing me,even the mention of a lolipop sounds erotic.
goin to have a cold shower.
@ Dave Malaysia
LOL…………..
Seriously though did you know that bit of trivia?
@CedarsDevil ; not funny, im staring at gemma atkinson pic on manutd.com and imagining her witha lolipop. see what uve done?
No mate, didnt know that trivia. What is about ?
And I didn’t even mention Jenna Jameson yet…
OMG
@ Dave Malaysia
(and others who will probably never know)
Sir Alex actually played for the team in the 88/89 season in a friendly against Somerset County Cricket Club (A football match NOT cricket) His one and only game as a player for us…….
Sorry about your current state though!
@CedarsDevil; He played as a striker? how did he do?score?
@ Dave M
He did player as a striker, did not score though….. All was all humour and fun
Bloody hell, so many typos in my last post! #he did play as a striker# It was all humour and fun#
I need me some strong coffee!
ok,goin to shower in ice ,will be back tomorow
I really think this lad has all the ability to be as good as Rio and maybe even better. When I see his name on the team sheet I have no fears what so ever!! Which is more than I can say for Evans this season!! Well done Chris lad, keep it up!!
He deserves a call-up, wasn’t impressed with his form at Fulham January – August but he’s done well in the United shirt!
Let’s not use Smalling’s welcome success become a stick to beat Jonny Evans. They are both young, both will have dips in form, both are needed for the future. Evans has lost confidence recently, making his decision-making fractionally out and making him look indecisive and much too easy to turn over. Even when he gets possession he looks uncertain what to do with the ball, often meekly turning it back to the goalkeeper. It may be that a spell at left back, where Evra has been very patchy defensively, would help Jonny get his game back. Our left flank is increasingly vulnerable and we are leaking far too many goals this season. Jonny’s usually done well at left back for N. Ireland.
But most of all, Well Done Chris!
I agee with Mr Oakley in regards to our left back berth. Yesterday was the latest example of Pat playing a part in us conceding a goal. If Fergie doesn’t want to use JOS or Evans there because they are too static, maybe Fabio could get a run out..
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has confirmed that Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken with him about Jordan Henderson.

Slightly off topic, but apparently the BBC are making a series about the Busby Babes, with David Tennant in it.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-11752437
Could be good, if only to remind the general public what cunts people who sing about Munich are.
@Costas – i’ve been saying it for months. Evra isn’t getting any sort of competition for the spot and it is not good. But i don’t believe Fabio will get his chance. At the end of the day Fergie knows best.
well done boy! keep up the good work!
And another thing. Please, Pat, stop talking in papers. Do the talking on the pitch.
http://www.tribalfootball.com/articles/hodgson-apologises-perceived-criticism-liverpool’s-johnson-1248611
too many of “sorry” these days from Roy. Good person and a manager but in a delicate situation.
Off topic….
I just arrived in Buenos Aires for a conference and saw TEVEZ at the airport
I felt a strong the urge to start screaming “WHO’S THAT TWAT FROM ARGENTIIIIINA…” but I honestly didn’t feel it was worth me getting arrested…
Does anybody know what he’s doing here???
Honestly feel our players are talking too much these days. Whats the use of those words if the performances are going to be poor. Yesterday was a great chance against a young, inexperienced and a very average Villa side but we were taken to the cleaners by them. An average player like Downing looked world class yesterday. Evra has been Poor all season. Made more mistakes this season than he made in all the seasons combined before.
Fans are happy with the comeback but i hope Fergie gives the players a kick on the backside. Even the average teams make us look poor at times. Worrying season ahead unless things are sorted out
Devil310 – He doesn’t want to be at shitty does he, any opportunity to get away. I would imagine he’ll be there for the internationals won’t he? So that means he’ll be moaning next week about playing too much.
http://www.people.co.uk/sport/football/news/2010/11/14/sir-alex-ferguson-set-to-advise-javier-hernandez-to-ditch-his-pre-match-catholic-prayer-at-ibrox-102039-22715104/
it was gonna happen sooner or later….
I think you should ditch it for good… no need to be too dramatic, my little pea
So if catholics must go to hell, can they return as red devils?
Manchuchu, you are the blackest of kettles.
It’s the headline, it’s the bottom line.
Well done Chris!
@WednesdayX
So an article without a single named source states that it believes Sir Alex might have to stop Hernandez from doing his prayer thing. In other news, I know a guy who knows a guy who said that Didier Drogba secretly dresses up like Dennis The Menace at midnight and burns a porcupine to his crazy yellow gods.
A news story that doesn’t quote a single named source isn’t a news story. It’s an opinion piece, and as such only has value if you value the opinion of the person presenting it.
Long story short, don’t believe what you read just because it’s in print/on a newspapers website. If nobody is willing to put their name to anything in the story it’s not a story.
And danny scored against Chelski! This could’ve been such a great weekend…
As ever the logical lads type the “most correct words. Fletch and Giles.
This call up is based partially on his fantastic performance in Turkey.
He looked total class.Everything you would wish of Rio at his age. Composure bringing the ball out beating a man with a forward pass.
I just dont understand people who knock youngsters, its hardly inspiring is it! Have you heard of motivation?
Jonny Evans is gonna be just fine.We will be singing his praises in years to come.
Nice one. He has looked good this season.
Devil310 – Probably gone for some more counselling mate. The fucking cunt.
@ Devil310, why would you comminicate with a internet site …..while on a conference? Amazing.
I suppose its people and the mind boggling nature of same! pmsl
Devil310 – Ill take a wild stab at this, he’s from there?
Aye outer space
Mars?
God there really are somer plastics cunts on here these days . “John O Shit” Yeah good one.
Manchuchu – Same Evans that has had Drogba and ladyboy in his pocket? Muppet.
