At tonight’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards, our very own Sir Bobby Charlton was presented with a lifetime achievement award. He was visibly moved on the stage, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd, whistling and cheering the United legend.

His brother Jack presented him with the award, reflecting on Bobby as a child, always staying longer at the park to kick the ball about.

Bobby was modest in his acceptance, thanking the friends he played alongside in the 1966 and 1968 World Cup and European Cup finals, as well as his ‘lovely lady’ wife.

Congratulations, Sir Bobby.

Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United were both shortlisted for the Manager and Team of the Year awards, but unsurprisingly, were eclipsed by the Olympic winning teams.
