Wenger: Fergie’s Achievements Are Exceptional

Arsene Wenger has joined in with praising Sir Alex Ferguson after his statue was unveiled at Old Trafford earlier today.

“I don’t remember anybody else being at the top, top level for such a long time,” he said. “His commitment is always there, you never feel that his commitment is weakened. What I admire most is his forward-thinking. He is always ready to move with the times and never speaks about what he has done. He knows when to renew the team, when to make changes, and that is exceptional because you can sometimes be lazy when you have so much success. He’s never been like that, he’s always on his toes and he can renew what is needed, when it is needed. It is a job where you need to dedicate your life to football and Ferguson has done that and that deserves massive respect. He has won absolutely everything and, of course, that is something exceptional.”

Anyone get the feeling SAF is about to retire at the end of this season?
Having a stand named after you and a statue is usually reserved for people who have retired from the game?

  5. SHINJI THE NINJA says:

It has to be his last season and to be fair………………………..it is time now when you compare with the energy and modern thinking in the game. He is definitely in decline and I would hate to see him overstay his tenure.
They may be big boots to fill but there are people out there who definitely have big enough feet.
Watching Madrid they looked like the Manchester Unite of old, fast, exciting breaking football.
As usual I will be in the Stretford End on Saturday and I am already dreading what weird and unfathomable team he will play. I am sure there will be at least two over-the-hill players on the field
and I wouldnt be surprised if we win comfortably enough but end up leaving the ground feeling deflated at the boring football I just paid a LOT of money to watch.
The whole team and management and style of play really needs shaking up. I want to be excited again and it is seldom that any more.
It needs saying, its not just about winning, if we dont win it in style I would rather not win it at all as it creates a culture of boring mechanical football and not the poetic flamboyant passion of Best and Cantona etc – THAT is Manchester United and that is becoming a distant memory.
We sooooooo need new blood at the top.

  6. Adam says:

My conspiracy theory is that the arrangement’s have already been made prior to Pep leaving Barca to take over for SAF. I think that SAF is going to pull the plug end of this season, and I think Pep is coming to replace him, but before he does, he needed to regroup. The immediate transition from Barca to United would have been pretty massive.

I’ve got the utmost respect for Wenger. I used to despise Wenger with a passion but he’s grown on me over the years and he’s actually pretty funny. The game will be a sad place without these two great managers.

Loving that theory. Would be the final masterstroke from SAF.

  11. The Left Bank says:

Kudos to Wenger for praising SAF.

I always had the highest respect for Wenger and admired what he has done at Arsenal – albeit grudgingly. But there is not doubt he and Ferguson have put the Premiership where it is today when they duelled in epic games. I think as a United fan I miss those highly charged Arsenal-United games because it was a titanic rivalry between great managers and great players playing beautiful football.

That all changed with Chelsea and now Man City trying to buy titles instead of building from the ground up and knowing when to blend youth with experience.

Say what you will about Wenger but he did build his Arsenal teams without too much cash but spoted talent. SAF was much more pragmatic to Wenger who seemed more purist when it came to giving youth a chance. SAF has the better record of blending new youth with experience. On top of which SAF had a greater desire to win at any costs.

SAF will always be the greatest manager the game has produced – it’s hard to see anyone else come close. But arguably he got there by being pushed by other good managers like Wenger to keep raising their game and never looking back.

Muhammad Ali needed his Frazier or Liston. Ferguson needed a Wenger.

It is slowly dawning on me what a privilege it has been to see one of the great managers of the game for the past 25 years. We fans have sometimes taken SAF for granted but oh how we will miss him when he does go out on his own terms.

I have every confidence he and the board have a plan in place because no one wants a repeat of the post-Busby episode of appointing a weak manager.

  12. Adam says:

    @AlphaRS says:
Thanks. .. I think the conversation in NY few months ago went something like this:

SAF: So.. you’re still on for September?
    PEP: Yep, will be ready
SAF: Great, see you in June.
    PEP: You betcha.

  14. Mike says:

Wenger is being diplomatic. With the money Ferguson has had at his disposal he’s heavily underachieved. How can the richest club in the world for many decades have won the European cup so few times. Fergie would never have hacked it in a club without shed loads of money. Wenger knows that but is too much of a gentleman to say so. If it hadn’t have been for the constant support of the FA and the media, Fergie would have been toast years ago.

  15. Adam says:

@Mike, how do you explain the amount of Money City have at their disposal, and the “superstars” purchased being eliminated at a group stage twice now.

That wasn’t the first time that happened to us and it won’t be the last. Chelsea knocked out Barca and then beat a far superior Munich. That is Europe. It’s notoriously difficult to win for a reason.

He won it twice, lost twice in the final to a superior Barcelona outfit that could beat anyone on their night. Underachieved? Jesus Christ. Either you are completely deluded or a troll looking for a reaction… I’m thinking the latter… maybe a bit of both.

We pushed shitty all the way last season and if the team didnt switch off against Everton we would have 20 titles. I dnt even want to think about the void when he goes. Sorry to sound over the top but it will be like a death. Ive supported united all my life and only 2 managers have been there. Ron Atkinson and Sir Alex so ive been so lucky. I havnt known anythng else. And imo i hope he stays 4 another 5years.

  27. WeAreUnited says:

Cmon, we won in 2008, Lost the final 2009 and then again 2011.
He’s not underachieved, but with better tactics we could be on 4 wins, but then again Barca was so superior that maybe only in 2009 we could have won it. NEVER in 2011.

    Final 2009
GK 1 Netherlands Edwin van der Sar
RB 22 Republic of Ireland John O’Shea
    CB 5 England Rio Ferdinand
    CB 15 Serbia Nemanja Vidić
    LB 3 France Patrice Evra
    CM 8 Brazil Anderson
    CM 16 England Michael Carrick
CM 11 Wales Ryan Giggs (c)
RW 13 South Korea Park Ji-Sung
    LW 10 England Wayne Rooney
    CF 7 Portugal Cristiano Ronaldo
    Substitutes:
Tomasz Kuszczak Rafael, Jonny Evans, Nani, Paul Scholes, Dimitar Berbatov , Carlos Tévez

BAD tactics, Tevez should have been on instead of Giggsy and Scholes at that time 35-36 instead of Park. We had no Valencia, no Fletcher in the team. We know that Giggsy, Park and carrick were a bad combination.

2011. We know the mistakes, Giggs and Park in the midfield, like wtf? and Nani left out on the bench and Berbatov, top-scorer wasn’t even on the bench, but Michael Owen was??? I get that the magnificent Chicharito the man, played but a big tactical error.
Again, Giggs, Park and Carrick together.

2009 was possible, but the tactical errors made us lose, 2011 was a dream.
This time we had Fletcher, but he was on the bench. And we put Scholes in, who was run-over.

  30. WeAreUnited says:

It was this that led to both the appointment of Carlos Queiroz and, in many games, a conservatism and defensiveness never previously associated with Ferguson. As Patrice Evra has stated, “tactically, Quieroz brought something important to Man United.”

this stroek for me from that article.

  31. Chicalole says:

God, Allah there are so many deities but without a doubt Sir Alex Ferguson is God!

  32. WeAreUnited says:

semi-final (2007), victory (2008) and final (2009), 2010 quarter-finals against Bayern, fuck I never will forget Nani’s two goals and how we were leading 3-1, then ribery got Rafael sent off and Robben’s stupid volley goal got us off. We were really strong in 2010. Bayern then got Lyon in the semifinals, imagine. WOW.
Then another final again in 2011.

  33. dave says:

knew wenger was in fergie’s class SAF wanted him and vieria at man utd in 1999 when fergie was planning to retire. Arsenal fans should avoid the media slack and acknowledge they still have a great
manager. Its the yanks at both clubs who are the problem

  34. Dela says:

@WeAreUnited –> Fergie’s tactics got us to the final in both 2009 and 2011. Barca were incredible in 2009, they won a treble afterall. I don’t need to defend Fergie’s line-up but have to say with Ronaldo and Rooney in the team, where did you expect Tevez to fit in, considering Barca’s midfielders had been snatching the headlines all season and Fergie had to pack it. He came on at half time anyway and made no difference. Ronaldo was in the team too all game and made no difference. They were better. It wasn’t tactics, they were simply a better team. As for Park, he also played Park against Arsenal in the knock out stages and he tore them apart, combining with Rooney for one of Ronaldo’s most memorable goals for us on the counter attack, and getting on the score sheet himself. Barca actually did show a slight weakness to counter attacking football for a time, it’s how Arsenal beat them 2-1 at the Emirates, despite barely touching the ball, and Chelsea even managed to hurt them on the counter, and FFS even CELTIC showed that if you can absorb the pressure and accept you will be overrun, you might actually get a break and score and then go on to win. So I think Fergie might have been hoping that we’d hit them too, it would explain why three-lungs park got into the starting 11.

In 2011, I was very shocked at Berbatov’s omission from the team too and still can’t really explain it. I suspect it might have been that Berba couldn’t score for some time before that. I think his last goal that season was against Bolton at OT? I remember him playing against Blackpool last game of the season and missing chance after chance to go clear of Tevez in race for golden boot but couldn’t do it. Maybe that had something to do with it or maybe Fergie genuinely thought Michael Owen could come on and be an impact sub if required, I have no idea. All I know is we got raped regardless. Since he has been the target of a lot of criticism.. I have to point out that if we weren’t playing Giggs in 2011 we never would have made the final. He assisted all three goals that sent Chelsea packing, for example. I remember him assisting a goal for two for Chicho in other games too.

To be fair, Fergie has said himself his biggest disappointment is we didn’t win more European trophies. We had some really harsh years in Europe, as I’m sure you remember. The Knockout stages are just bloody relentless… bloody away goals, penalty shoot outs etc. anything can happen. Different countries, different styles of play, different (often hostile) atmospheres… one country is like playing in the heat of hell, the next is frozen over etc. Europe is only for the most hardened of squads. It can take years to gain the experience and patience to tame it. It also makes a big difference to a team that is fighting for the top spot in their domestic league… where would the priority for fitness lie, for example, if there was no points difference between us and City in April 2013?

  35. Dela says:

@WeAreUnited —> Oh yeah! I still get a chill of anger when I see Ribery or Robben! What’s even more messed up is Barca didn’t make the final that year.. Inter put them out (helped by the Icelandic volcano disrupting Barca’s travel for the away leg, to be fair). So ye, we had a very real prospect of going all the way in 2010, and that Robben volley went right where you’d expect a right-back to be covering for a corner… it still haunts me!

As Fergie said.. “It’s an absolute travesty of a result!”

  36. SHINJI THE NINJA says:

I will give Pep a chance – Like him as a man and liked the football Barca played………………….. BUT
He was blessed with some incredible talent at Barcelona and has nothing else against his name to suggest he will be a success at United.

The only man guaranteed to step up to the size of the challenge is Mourinho.
I would like Pep to get the job but you have to be realistic about what he achieved at Barcelona.
Jose`s CV reads of success in Portugal, England,Italy, Spain……….. its just more substantial and achieved with varied resources and different circumstances but he has always achieved.

I still think Pep will be up to it though as he has brains and often that is good enough to set you apart from a lot of other managers.

  37. blink says:

Arsenal fan here, Used to despise fergie years ago, Great manager but just seemed like a bully. Upmost respect for his commitment , achievements & longevity he has mellowed somewhat in old age possibly wenger has a bit too? Took em long enough lol maybe easier for fergie tho as we arent a threat to you anymore – Chelski/City Billions stopped that! :( Miss the old rivalry but have a lot of time for fergie nowadays, he is a TRUE LEGEND not just for you but to all of football (I dont use that word lightly) & he will be sorely missed when hes gone – doubtful we will ever see his like again & certainly deserves his statue.

  38. parryheid says:

But seriously, I don’t think that SAF’s replacement situaation is going to be left untidy, as if when he actually does go we’ll then start looking for people and be reviewing their CV’s to see who can carry the United legacy.

  40. andromeda says:

I always respect Wenger as a United fan, he is never hesitating to say the truth even if its for the sake of his greatest rival Fergie…two exceptional manager but Fergie has the upper hand.

  41. Dela says:

@blink –> Fergie’s mind-games can really get under people’s skin, and he does it to anyone we’re fighting for the league with. He drove Liverpool fans insane repeatedly but none like his mental destruction of Rafa Benitez a few years back, when Rafa just lost his mind completely and Liverpool collapsed. Keegan never really recovered from his spat with Fergie. He also injected himself right into the Clattenberg case recently and pissed off Di Matteo a lot. He’s had a few swipes at Mancini and City too in his own way and people pick up on that, but that’s all tactics to Fergie, it’s just part of the game. Outside of that, he seems to get on very well with anyone.

He said himself that Wenger is the manager he holds in then highest regard, probably because both of them are so proven at this point that neither can be fired… oh the clubs could do it but the fans would revolt. Meanwhile, other premier league clubs are scrapping and hiring managers in a desperate attempt to keep up. Wenger deserves a lot of respect for how he has kept Arsenal among the top clubs even as he lost some of his best players and seemingly hasn’t been given much to spend (probably due to the stadium costs?) for several years now, and he keeps Arsenal in the knock out stages of Europe too. If Wenger is given money, Arsenal will come back swinging. If UEFA stop being so irrelevant and actually sanction Chelsea, City and other welfare clubs, then Arsenal will come back big time. Take a look at City the past two years…. why the fuck didn’t the Abu Dhabi dudes just buy Arsenal in the first place? I’d say Wenger is pretty frustrated but like Fergie, he defines himself now by what he does at his club. He’ll die on the bench.

When Wenger came over I despised the flash multi lingual toss pot BUT I actually believe this man may be a rare breed. Yes he displays all the stomach churning frustrations and arm wavings of our lessers from across the pond but to have stuck in England so long and learned that the past is something to respect (The french hate history, unless its their own looked through rose tinted glasses), he has learned to grow up with dignoty and humility (not French traits). I must admit I kind of have a respect for him now, and I do feel sorry for him when the fans and the press get on his back because he has done a mighty fine job at Arsenal. In fact and this will go on to shock a few, he is my first choice as Sir Alexs replacement when Sir Alex retires as he is the only manager other than Sir Alex who has actually built successfull teams one after the other.

The nerve of those bastards. They refuse to apologize for nearly ruining a man’s career. BAN Mikel and Ramires for at least 8 games because what they did was FAR WORSE than Suarez. 50. Goat Peticoat says:

    SHINJI THE NINJA
Cantona was as French as they come BUT he was also provincial. Let me explain as provincial is usually a term given to narrow minded dumb fucks.
There is two Frances as no doubt there are two Englands and two of any country. Cockneys are fucking scum bags, Scousers are degenerat shit for brains (any group I havent alienated today after my blood, lol) but they are the majority and thus it could be argued the English are a bit chavy and cultureless scabby loudmouths. The French, as in my generalisation, are of this creed. The majority that make your stomach turn. The parisians, the Lyonites, those from the riviera. Then you have the provincial folk that the majority of the french despise and see as pessants, its actually these I prefer. The ones that play Rugby, they are patriots but are not those stenchy pretend philosopher types (a bit like the scousers or cockney pub chatters). These provincial folk, hunt, have ancient traditions, are not loud and brash but measured and quietly sophisticated. Cantona fits into this group. He is a Rugby man who turned his skills to football rather than a street wise smart arse who plays football, shags his best mates girl then buys a manbag so he looks the part when he goes out clubbing and doing lines.
I think you get my drift.

  51. Adam says:

Under pre Glazer model: United paid share holders the equivalent of about £8m annually.
Under Glazer model: United pay around £87m annually in interest/service of debt.

So £80m/year of club funds is flying out the window that could have been invested.

Imagine us buying even one of the players that put city up on points last year.
That’s the noisy neighbors with nothing then.

  53. pablo says:

no doubt ferguson and wenger the two greatest managers in the last 15-20 years.both know what their

  54. Goat Peticoat says:

    Adam
You are a twat mate. And I will explain. Hitler was against a gene pool, the jews. The jews are a closed society where it is impossible for a man of any other religion or non religion to take th ejewish faith and be excepted. Genetically they are quite closed. I have no problem with this. Hitler did.
When I said it was genetic it was a “joke”. Its a common turn of phrase in English. It has nothing to do with anhihilating a group of peoples rather a deep seated hatred. And like I said I offer no fucking appologies. The french opposed our entry into the common market for years, despite millions of our boys dying in their country to liberate them or pin th eGermans back. We also have been waring with them for the past 500 plus years. Im not prepared to forgive and forget when every political decision is challenged by them even if they previously agree with our point of view but rather make a profit than a stand on principle. The French are scum bags, simple as. If you have forgiven them, or never read a history book or generally to busy man bagging and sucking of a parkour hero then thats your perogative. My perogative is hatred. Swings and roundabouts. Where there is a pile of dog shit on the pavement there has to be a new pair of slush puppies to step into it.

  55. Goat Peticoat says:

Not living in England Im not privy to all the goosip. What ever happened to that poor black steward that got his bell rung by the Chelsea faithfull. You know the same group of front row thugs that were doing monkey chants at Wellbeck.

    @Goat
Yeah – I get it mate and I am not taking you to task.
As De Gaulle put it “There is Paris, and then there is the wilderness” I lived in Paris for 5 years and studied at Montpellier Uni for two. Fought a few Frenchmen, fucked a few french women and made some good friends and met some proper cunts too.
I guess the thing I learnt is, like everywhere else there are some Cantonas and some Mikels. You just have to keep an open mind til you find out which one you are sat next to in a bar.

  60. Goat Peticoat says:

I havent read the full statement released by Chelsea as I dont know of a reputable source of information on what is actually said. But was there ever an apology to Mark Clattenburg from Chelsea FC

  61. Goat Peticoat says:

    SHINJI THE NINJA
If I sounded like I was telling you off then I appologise my friend. When talking about the French passions boil and the red mist sets in. It goes to show how much I respect Wenger doesnt it. As for DeGaulle dont get me started, oh my fucking god. He is my very own personal Ayatollah, the things I would do to that cunt would make every piglet in Europe wince.
But you are absolutely right, each man is different, some governed by the head and others governed by the heart.

  62. Rai says:

How do you get the mobile version for this blog? The web based version on iPhone is shit

  63. barcelona-red says:

Goat peticoat and his ilk should be banned from this site. You are as bad, if not worse, than those you abuse. Any United fan who engages with such low-life should be ashamed. Having a “red mist” is no excuse for juvenile, racist bile. Regards, ashamed to be a part of it x

  64. Mike says:

So the defence seems to be ‘oh look what we won and what we nearly won. Blindness. Nobody using that argument has said and by the way we should have lost to Munich when we were 1-0 down with minutes to go when they hit the post. Red nosed tinted spectacles I’m afraid.

And to some of the less intelligent people who claim that I am gay or suffering mental illness, I think you need to accept that other people are allowed to have an opinion and being deliberately offensive merely renders your own less credible.

  65. Goat Peticoat says:

    barcelona-red
    racist bile? where?
Please understand the difference between racism and a belief system before answering. If you call a frenchman an arsehole it has nothing to do with race. “French” is a prefix to an individual that is of a particular clan of his chosing. A coloured individual has no choice but a person of a certain nationality, religious bent, political bias or anything with choice involved is free for biggotry without having the race card played.
Please understand the language before attacking me with it.

  66. Goat Peticoat says:

    Mike
Your absolutely correct. Bobby Charlton said as much before the final in 99. You can only be prepared and put yourself in a possition where luck can play a part in winning a certain trophy. We were incredibly lucky to win the final in 99 and to be fair Bayern Munich played the better football for most the game.
I dont know in what respect you answered and to whom but I welcome your opinions without prejudice, gay or not.

  67. barcelona-red says:

    Goat

You just come across as a bit of a twonk. Just saying. Maybe you are a nice guy… Just rein it in a bit. Show some love. Life’s too short.

  68. Goat Peticoat says:

    barcelona-red
My wife was saying just that. If she didnt know me then shed think that maybe some of the things I say are funny but shes not sure she would like me. Of course I rebutted by saying that if she was forming opinions of men that were not her husband then she was either a slag and mentally cheating on her husband or scrapping the barrel a bit in search of a mate. Each to their own my friend. Im an over opinionated twonk as you put it but you come across a bit of a moralfag. Swings, roundabouts, dogshit and slush puppies. Your right life is too short thats why I live it to its fullest, pushing the boundaries as far as they will go, making as many friends as possible and enemies too.

  69. Jay says:

    Goat Peticoat says:

…….I say throw that fucking black bastard out of the game. This isnt racist as it was Mikel who said he was in his imagination. Im not racist and I have no biggotry towards colour or ethnicity but Mikel has shamed everyone.

You call Mikel a black bastard and then at the same time you say you are not racist, you must have been cut from the same cloth of John Terry.

  70. Goat Peticoat says:

    Jay
No actually Mikel called himself that. In his imaginationa and then blamed Clattenburg for it. I am calling him the name he called himself. Your name is jay, Ill call you jay then.

  71. Adam says:

@Goat, one can see by your comments what you really are. I

  72. Arthur "Two Cheds-ito" Jackson says:

    @Goat

It’s pretty obvious to me that you write your posts tongue-in-cheek style to get a rise out of people. But posting statements about race is really pushing it. Why don’t you tone it down a bit? This is a football site, after all.

  73. WeAreUnited says:

    @Dela

MAN!! you made some very good and valid points, huge respect for you, cause I didn’t think that deep!

2009, Park indeed deserved his plave in the starting line-up, and this was a mistake by me, cause he was in form in that year!!! But playing Giggsy for me was the mistake.
You asked about Tevez and said he did nothing, but then, SAF shoulda woulda :P played,
Ronaldo LW for Giggsy, Tevez upfront for Ronaldo and Rooney as a AMF.
Easy to say, but this is how he could have done something and used that counter-attack system Park included. Carrick as always as a DMF. For me SAF made this mistake and tried to be smart, never worked out with Giggsy on. (all due respect to our legend)

    As for 2011.

Man, you enlightened me, really, it’s true that Giggsy put us threw with those passes in 2011, so basically he deserved his place, though
STILL I would NEVER play him in the middle of the field against Barca.
That’s the tactical error SAF did, no matter how good Giggsy had played. But based on his last game against Chelski, he deserved his starting place. Was it a good solution? Well.
We know the answer. But all credits to superBarca.

As for Berba not playing, well that elightened me, cause it’s true that he didn’t score in a while, this was all Chichas “fault” for playing so damn WELL. haha.
So basically, Chicha won it and deservely played in the final. But Owen in the bench instead of Berba? NEVER.
The other part was Nani, our best player that season and played well consistenly, ullike many suggests that he never does, he was on the bench. When he came on, he played ok, but let’s be honest, he’s not the supersub-player kinda type.

“It’s an absolute travesty of a result!”
It definetily was, they never deserved that spot, and I think we lost it when Olic scored in Munich, when Evra and somebody else messed up in the last minute and they scored.
Same when Carrick messed up for Olic to score Munichs first goal at OT.
    The rest is unfortunately history.

BTW. Dela, I have made a conlusion that if you want to be CL champions, you have to beat Barca. After 2007.

2007 Liverpool won them in the first knock-out stage -> went to the finals -> lost to Milan
2008 we won them in the semifinals -> champions
2009 lost to them in the finals
2010 Inter won them in the semi-finals -> champions
2011 we lost to them in the finals
2012 Celski won them in the semifinals -> champions

    AMAZING. #IAMUNITED

  74. Dan-young says:

@barcelona-red .. Leave goat alone, hes sometimes a bit of an arsehole, but hes OUR arsehole :) and you’ve got to have an arsehole to sort shit out (by shit im refering to the victims of his comments, which majority of the time deserve it!)

Goat.. No insults intended for use of the word ‘arsehole’

  75. TheRadLegion says:

    @WeAreUnited
“For me SAF made this mistake and tried to be smart, never worked out with Giggsy on. (all due respect to our legend)”

I don’t think he was trying to be smart. He is SMART!

  76. Red Robin says:

    Goat Peticoat

You are a racist! You can disguise your words nicely, but you can not hide the racist tone on them.

  77. barcelona-red says:

    Goat..

If you think that posting racist comments on a message board is “living life to its fullest” and “pushing boundries” you really need to get out more.

    Dan-Young…

An arsehole’s an arsehole, whoever they support.

  79. parryheid says:

Benitez lucky to get a job.I hope he’s lucky on Sunday too.Hah nice one Fergie.

  80. Marq says:

“Everyone feels for Roberto Di Matteo. Quite rightly too. It’s amazing when you consider he’s won the Champions League. You would have thought they would have waited to let the guy try and win a Club World Cup. A few weeks ago we were thinking it would be a three-horse title race. That’s not out of the question. Chelsea have a big squad and lots of experience and they’ve brought in a couple of young players in Hazard and Oscar. They have a sprinkling of youth coming through too. You can’t dismiss them. Benitez has been trying to get a job for a long time – I hope he’s lucky on Sunday too!”

    Good one Sir Alex

  81. FletchTHEMAN says:

    SAF Presser:

    Fit: Rooney, Smalling, De Gea
    To be assessed: Evans
    Still out: Nani, Kagawa, Vidic

ON Benitez: “Of course, Rafa Benitez is very lucky because on his CV in two weeks’ time he could have two world club titles to his name [he won one with Inter] and had nothing to do with the teams. Jose Mourinho won the Treble at Inter; Rafa took over and they won the world title without having to do anything. He had nothing to do with the construction of the teams – that’s why I really feel disappointment for Roberto – he could have an FA Cup, Champions League and Club World Cup on his CV. It’s a pity for him.”

    Sir Alex Love Rafa! ;)

  82. Gandalf says:

ha ha, too right Fergie. I’m sure the reporters won’t waste any time to ask FSW to respond to this.
Let the war of words begin – I can’t wait to see how Benitez will lose the plot this time.

@fergie is the boss – sorry man, I saw your response to my post on the earlier thread just now. I believe Dalgliesh appointment for Liverpool was more sentiment, had tremendous connection to the scouse fans when the owners were losing their support etc… as opposed to rafa who the chelsea fans hate and plays boring football which roman hates. So even though they have been out for sometime, benitez to chelsea just is a bad decision from russian owner IMO. I think they made the decision to get rid of di matteo and for interim no own except waiter was available! Interesting to see if Pep will arrive in the summer.

  83. parryheid says:

Maybe they got rid of Di Matteo because United were sniffing around Benitez to replace Sir Alec but then again maybe not.

  84. Red Robin says:

After all he has done to United and all the achievement, Fergie has his right to call his day anytime he wants. Shameful that some posters here call themselves “fans” but ask for Fergie early retirement.

I guess he won’t call his day this summer, I can see that he is still have the hunger to win more trophies. At least another UCL trophy. Basically, Fergie is great in man management and he has great skill in encouraging people. We know that in many times he can turn a lose lose situation into a win. But he needs is a great tactician like Carlos Queiroz. However, even without great tactician in his team, United had already came back from behind for many matches this year.

I also guess that Pep will not replace him. I even think that Pep will not fit into United. He needs big players to win things, like he did previously with Barca. Perhaps He will go to Milan or Inter or City but not Chelsea. The risk of being sacked is very high in Chelsea. I won’t think that Pep will even bother to look at Chelsea offer. He had already became their manager (not FSW), if he really wanted the job. Sabbatical until next summer is not the real reason for his rejection.

I guess Solskjaer will replace Fergie. But it won’t be a direct replacement as Ole needs more experience. In my crystal ball, I can see few names to become United managers and failed (I do not hope this but it happened before in the period between Matt Busby and Fergie), then Ole can step in and we have our glory back for some period of times. So be ready for gloomy period in darkness my fellow red devils. This is the period where our faith will be tested. So be ready. :) :)

  85. parryheid says:

    Red Robin.

What are you wittering about? Shameful fan’s may call on him to retire. For your information I happen to think if he doesn’t step down in January were fucked as he wont make the necessary changes, his winning anything days are over imo. and as he proved last season he can turn a win win situation into lose lose.I also totally disagree with all your points re our next manager as well.Get real it’s time for change and the quicker the less paifull it will be.

  86. SHINJI THE NINJA says:

    @Red Robin
Fergie is neither bigger than the Club nor bigger than us fans.

If he feels, like you, that he is beyond criticism and writes his own contracts then that is bound to lead to complacency.
Every manager should rightly be judged on his previous season. There is no room for sentimentality at the top – otherwise you end up with Dalgleish like Liverpool.

This cult of “Kim Jong Ill” blind devotion to the Great One is disturbing and with all the Stand Namings and statues and glorification posters it is starting to look a bit too self-congratulatory and dare I say it “Yank” marketing bullshit.

  87. United Till I Die says:

Lest this all be some two-faced wank fest dressed up as United support, Mikel didn’t accuse Clatternberg of racism once. Ramires repeated what he *believed* he heard to Mikel, and the white blokes who own and run Chelsea FC made the decision to publicly accuse the ref of racism.

If Mikel caused a scene in the tunnels then obviously ban him for the normal amount of matches. But twisting the truth to accuse him of playing the race card is not on. Joking or not, that makes you no better then the scum who did the same thing to Evra.

@Scott, in all seriousness mate you should be mindful those pesky LFC and CFC supporters don’t take screen shots of this page and start accusing you of providing a haven for racist sympathisers. Fair enough you’re not the one writing about the holocaust and “black bastards” on this thread, but most professional Journo’s rightly named and shamed on RoM wouldn’t tolerate some weird cunt telling offensive jokes/having a breakdown in their comment section. They wouldn’t give them a platform, instead you’d see a little box saying “comment removed” by moderator. And its got precisely fuck all to do with Morals – its just good Business practice in a global market to protect your brand from being associated with scum. But hey what do I know, its your brand.

  88. Red Robin says:

    Shinji

Of course he is not beyond critism. He has to deliver something this year, league or european. And I believe he will, like I said before that he is still hungry for achievements.

I said that he can call his day anytime he wants, because of what he’s done is exceptional. It would be a different case if he didn’t deliver anything for years like for example Wenger. Of course I will critisize him and ask him to retire, if that’s the case. But fake plastic fans like you and parry will not understand this and will demand streak wins every year.

  89. parryheid says:

    Red Robin.

do you have difficulty reading the sign that say’s Shit Creek you are here. Can you seriously not comprehend how lacking we are over the whole of our midfield and have been for some time.Absolute power breeds a backroom of people frightened to tell the omnipotent one he needs to make changes for fear of being binned, wake up man

  90. parryheid says:

    Red Robin.

As far as you are concerned we should just go Bob Bob Bobbing along

  91. Red Robin says:

    Parry

I’m one of them who think that Fergie is still capable to run the team. Of course he will do something to sort out the weakness of the team. He is not foolish. What do you expect from him? Telling us that he is chasing a central midfielder? Wait until the end of the season before you jump into conclusion that his winning years are over. We are second in the league and still running for UCL. Pay some respect to Fergie mate!

Like I said, fans like you and shinji will be tested on the period pasca Fergie. His shoes are too big for anyone to fit in, even for Pep or Mourinho. They will come and fail. Mark my words. If you think that the sooner Fergie gone the better, THINK again!

  92. parryheid says:

    Red Robin

You are happy with the status quo good on you but I aint and am fully aware of our position in both comp’s.Problem is we are not good enough to progress from this point.

  93. Red Robin says:

    Parry

Simple mate. Fergie is a proven manager, he is our asset and plus he is still.hungry for glory. Status quo or not, I think it is for our benefit that he is still be around as long as he think he can. We dumped Liverpool and Chelsea at their turfs with a team that you said are not good enough to progress.

Btw, I see our team differently than how you see it. I think we have enough to progress, we only need to sort out our midfield. Other departments (I.e.: gk, def, winger & fw) are in good shape and improving. Fergie is great in man management as we know. I think he is keeping Ando, Tom C, Fletcher and Powell for the second half of the year. But, I guess he will still bring in a midfielder in January. Someone who is already in his pocket by now. Time will tell, he is a winner.

  94. parryheid says:

    Red Robin.

He’s proven that he has lost his bite or we would not have surrendered a possible title at Etihaad with a spineless second half performance, but you will disagree. And you are correct we have Only to sort out our midfield, but of course he would have to take advice from within the backroom staff who it appears are terrified to tell him about his eyesight or he would see for himself. And as for the egg on legs Anderson six years?Christ he really is a late developer don’t you think, fucking waste of rations. As for January incomers Pray he resigns.
