Shocker/mistake?
No place for Ritchie de Laet? According to the official Premier League website: “For the 2010/11 campaign Under 21 players will have been born on or after 1st January 1989.” De Laet’s birthday is November 1988. However, on the official site he is listed as a U-21 with the club today confirming that every player not out loan is eligible to play. Weird.

[edit] The squad list on the Premier League’s website includes De Laet in he named squad. I imagine the official United website will follow suit.

Great to see Hargreaves in there

  2. Dazbowski says:

    Uninspiring!

  3. Moscow is my heaven says:

    Not good enough for Europe.

  4. Kingabdullah says:

A real non story. We all knew this would be the squad. On the surface its a great squad though. Easy to see where we will be needing progression too. That’s a EPL winning squad though.

  5. Altonian says:

Hargreaves was always going to be included, we didn’t even have a 25th player so it wasn’t as if another player could have taken his place. Personally, I still don’t think will see him play again.

  6. Butlersrevenge says:

An injury free season, no probs, but cover is not inspiring. Some players are still improving though and could see some big performances for periphial players, we’ll see.

  7. Mic says:

Is anyone else gutted at £8m VDV slipping our grasp? Would make a good 25th player!

  8. Aaron says:

Come on guys a bit of optimism here.. The first xi is strong and the cover is decent, it’s goin to be another 2 or 3 years before we start making CL finals hopefully but the future looks bright and I’m pretty sure that squad listed above can take home number 19 if we stay clear of horrific injuries crises like last season

  9. Dave Mack says:

Anyone “uninspired” by that list of players needs to cross to the blue side. I suppose reading City’s list does inspire you.
Seriousily, how can you say that and still declare yourself a United supporter? Where’s your passion?

  10. clarhod16 says:

aah!! so dissapointed!! SAF should seal tha Rodwell transfer.tis is an added benefit to tha English game in general, a huge talent cud excel under tha OT hierachy…will wait and see what happens in Jan…window.

  11. Mozza79 says:

Correction Richie De Laet should be in the list of 24 and Amos should be in the under 21s.

  12. portugueseprincess says:

Everyone is entitled to their opinions. My opinion is that some fans opinions on here is crap :)
I’m very happy to see Hargreaves on the list. Come on United!

  13. Toms says:

Not happy with that midfield, especially with an 8 million pound van der vart wandering around. Carrick is going to have to prove me wrong, and Anderson is going to have to rediscover his first season form.

  14. alan says:

still think we are missing two players, we should of moved for 0zil or van der vaart way before the end of the world cup, if ozil said no we could of got van der vaart. we need a creative midfielder cause im worried over the legs of scholes, if he gets injured who can spread the play like him find that killer pass. i dont think carrick is the answer im sorry ive giving up on him after last year im just cant see why we paid 18.6m. fergie keeps going on about value in the market 12.5 million ozil well worth it for at 21 yr old he paid more than that for nani and we all now nani plays 1 great game then 10 bad 1s. van der vaart at 8.2million well im sorry for some1 who set up 23 goals last yr for real madrid is well worth it . fergie you are the best manager in our history but come on now the glazers have your hands tied up. im sorry to see that there was only 51,000 season tickets sold. but in away im thinking is this the start of the fans showing that they want them yanks out just as bad as i do. its our club not there club as they rob us and bring the debt up an up what will happen then cause we all now to stay at the top you have to spend aleast 40 to 50million each season. we have brought in two players what cost us 15million. smalling was bought last last season. we sold 2 players and made 15 million. i just think 1 or two players to cover giggs an scholes would of did us the world of good. i wish some1 in utd would say this is not good enough wishful thinking. we all now we need a keeper to . i love utd hate glazers

  15. sumzredarmy says:

    There’s 25 men

  16. sumzredarmy says:

    Wait 24 sorry

  17. Moscow is my heaven says:

    @Dave Mack

At United we strive for perfection, or at the least settle for excellence. That includes our actual quality in the squad. Fans see that squad and give their opinion, they do not slag the squad off (it wouldn’t even be their fault if they were bad), so how is that crossing to the blue side?

Things don’t look rosy, when Fletcher gets injured/burned out, our midfield is FINISHED. I hope Rooney hits some sort of form soon to ease the burden on the strikeforce, I am not swayed by Berba’s performances (YET), let’s see what we do against mid-table opposition without Rooney. Defence looks solid, and crucially, we still have a world-class goalkeeper.

Hernandez excites me more than anyone on that squad list.

  18. Clint The Red says:

Cn sum1 check how many over 21s we had playing last season? Also do the same 4 our main rivals. This should give us a better indication of how much ths new ruling would affect the top teams… I mean if we all still used less thn 25 players last season thn i dnt see much of a point other thn the 8 man ruling.
I see chelsea has 21 legible players ths season bt if they didnt use more then 21 last season thn wht difference does the new rules make?

  19. Devil310 says:

    @Dave Mack

We’re all passionate here. We all love United. Just because people are pointing out, what they believe, the shortcomings of our team are, it doesn’t mean they should become a City fan

No one can’t really say they would have liked to have a player like Ozil or VDV included on this list.

Either way, we’ll continue to support the club and this squad no matter what.

  20. alan says:

also dose any1 on here think the glazers are doing a great job. noooooooooooo dose anybody think that man utds future looks bright with the egg heads nooooooooooooooooooo. dose any1 see boycotts an protests getting bigger and better this year hell ye they will. love utd hate glazers

  21. mickjk says:

I don’t understand. Is Ritchie in or out? Feck these bullshit rules. What next, we’re only allowed to spend what we generate? Ridiculous.

  22. marsy the red says:

the rule is i think is that they have to name 3 goalkeepers so even though Amos is under 21 he has to be named

  23. willierednut says:

We lack a real genuine replacement for Fletch, that’s my main concern, but apart from that the squad looks good.

  24. Stretford End Flags says:

    De Laet is included.
The rule says you have to be 21 or under on the 1st January.
De Laet was 21 last November, so on the 1st January he is still 21.

  25. Scott the Red says:

Stretford End Flags: Not according to the official Premier League website.

“For the 2010/11 campaign Under 21 players will have been born on or after 1st January 1989.”

De Laet was born Nov 1988.

  26. dela says:

Soccernet says de Laet is still eligible. I really hope they’ve got that one right.

  27. Stretford End Flags says:

Well De Laets in the United squad list (As is Bebe) and it says on the official United site that a player has to be 21 or under on the 1st Jan to be classed as under 21.

  28. Scott the Red says:

SEF – Like I said in the article, I know he’s included as U-21 on United’s site. I’m just telling you what the Premier League rules are and the Premier League rules say he doesn’t count as U-21.

  29. ericthedog says:

People really need to keep the faith with SAF, his track record is pretty good! I never understand how peolple get so sucked in to the frenzy that follows an average player having a good WC such as Ozil. He’ll be kicked out by the virus this time next year. Also, if VDV was that good, he’d still be there and not scraping around for a club then ending up at also-rans Spurs.

  30. KJ says:

Anyone noticed that Amos (10 April 1990) is U-21? Is there a 3 keeper minimum to be registered? ‘Cause he really didn’t need to be.

  31. Scott the Red says:

KJ – Yeh, there’s a minimum of 3 goalies, which is why Amos is listed.

  32. StatesideAussie says:

Re De Laet: Scott the Red is correct. The PL site also says “In keeping with UEFA guidelines, an Under 21 player is defined as one who is under the age of 21 on 1st January in the year in which the season commences.” As of January 1 this year (the year when this new season commences), De Laet was already 21, not under 21. He has just been left out.

It can only be seen as a fairly damning judgment of him. I don’t rate him that highly, but this basically says to him, “Better look for another club, you’re not wanted here.” I mean, there is no other reason to leave him out: we have room under the squad rules. I was in favor of including Hargreaves, since we had no-one else who could use that place in the squad and it was a good vote of confidence. But there’s also no-one who needs De Laet’s place, and he’s not even injured. To leave him out can only be a vote of zero confidence.

It’s a wonder, then, that he wasn’t off-loaded in the transfer window.

  33. Fenwar says:

Seems like a cock-up that De Laet isn’t listed, especially as Amos doesn’t need to be. Unless someone has just asked to take him on loan?

The real question is whether Hargo/Anderson will be in the 25-man Champions’ League squad. Pretty sure Bebe will miss out as will De Laet and probably Obertan, as well as at least one of Fabio/Rafael/Neville/Smalling.

  34. EvilWacko says:

I suspect Bebe will not be involved with the first team. Too much competiton up front with Macheda, Chicha And Owen fighting for first team football.

  35. KJ says:

STR – Yeah, that makes sense then.

It is weird why De Laet isn’t in the squad. After last year’s 7-man injured defenders period (which De Laet played during), I would’ve thought they wouldn’t take any chances with our defense. Certainly having one spot vacant and unused ’til January is useless.

  36. Faizah says:

I think the only problem that we did not solved is the full-backs. We don’t have a good right back, and there’s no good sub. for Evra!. Otherwise, the squad in general is fantastic and I’m very optimistic about this season.

    GLORY GLORY MAN UNITED!

  37. Dave Mack says:

    @Moscow & Devil310

I’m not saying that it’s wrong to crtique the realtive strength of our squad but when someone writes and says it’s “uninspiring” to me that says they’ve lost their passion.

It speaks to a sort of glory hunter fan who wants to see big exciting names … much like City and Real Madrid.

To each his own I guess but I’m a 40 year veteran United supporter and I can honestly say that when I read those squad names I still get goose bumps.

And btw, don’t write us off in Europe this year. Team work, passion, youth, believe mixed with world class talent of Rooney, Berba, Nani, Vidic, Rio, Evra, VDS (+ a couple of old goggers like a certain PAUL SCHOLES and RYAN GIGGS!!) all lead by the greatest football manager on the planet …. says we can acheive anything.

  38. Moscow is my heaven says:

    Dave Mack

Fair enough. I just fucking hate getting associated with Man Shitty and the fascists, gives me goosebumps of hatred every time they’re mentioned.

  39. Fenwar says:

@Scott, where is the rule about 3 keepers? I’m looking at the rules here and can’t find any mention (although I haven’t read the whole thing you’d assume it would turn up on a search for “goalkeeper”)?

    http://www.premierleague.com/page/Handbook/0,,12306,00.html

I know Villa have only named 2 keepers, they haven’t named a youth keeper although I’m sure they must have one on the books, so we shouldn’t need to name Amos?

  40. Mozza79 says:

Fenwar Villa have only named 2 keepers but they’ve have to keep another squad place free in order to accommodate the signing of a new free agent keeper over the summer. In other words if you only name 2 keepers you can only name 24 players max. We have chosed to name our 3 keepers from the start.

  41. EvilWacko says:

Dunno about keepers, but Manutd.com reports that De Laet is in the under 21 list, let’s hope they got it right.

  42. Stretford End Flags says:

De Laet is confirmed in the 24 man squad, how he gets there is a different matter!!!!
Seems Amos doesnt need to be in the 25 or in our case 24 due to his age.

  43. Mozza79 says:

Evil Wacko they didn’t. De Laet turns 22 this November and this is ineligible.

  44. arijc says:

Ritchie De Laet is available as one of the under 21s. Its clearly stated on United’s official Facebook page.

  45. utd4life says:

no surprises in the squad..imo its good enough to win both PL and CL..as long as we dont get screwed up by injuries like we did last season..

Midfield does look a bit lightweight..that’s my only worry..hope hargo makes a full recovery..his availability would mean so much to us..and hopefully ando gets his priorities straightened out and plays to his full potential..

This is the season where we knock l’pool off their perch and show everyone who mocked us about our debt and everyone who wrote us off that we are still the best in the business..

    GGMU..

  46. Scott the Red says:

arijc – Clearly you couldn’t be bothered to read what it says about De Laet in the article?

  47. arijc says:

Sorry…he is in the official list of 25. Just got the link
    http://www.premierleague.com/page/Headlines/0,,12306~2142220,00.html

  48. willierednut says:

We’ve already knocked the dippers off the their fucking perch.

  49. Costas says:

Thanks arijc. So no real issue here then. I was beginning to get worried.

As for the squad itself, it’s fine in most areas.

  50. arijc says:

  52. Fenwar says:

So De Laet is in, the squad is 24 but Amos is named in the U21s.

(That PL list annoyingly includes U21 players who are out on loan, does this mean we could opt to recall Cleverley or Welbeck at any point and they’d be eligible?).

There’s nothing in the lists denoting who is a keeper, can anyone point me to where the 3 keeper rule is mentioned as I can’t find it? (Am I just being a dumbass here?)

  53. Costas says:

Journos keep saying about Chelsea’s squad, but I am only seeing 19 senior players. Apparently you can name less than 8 homegrown players if your squad tally is less than 25.

  54. Sindrinho says:

No surprises in the squad, think Sir Alex made the right decision, De Laet’s never impressed me..

  55. arijc says:

    Costas
Apparently if you don’t have 8 homegrown players, then you can’t name a squad of 25. This is the explanation that I found on the premierleague site -
“Similarly, clubs do not have to name eight home grown players if they do not have that many but that would mean operating with a reduced squad.”

  56. MG says:

    Hello

The list has been made by the one man that needs to make it

It’s over – enjoy the season – do not do a fucking 800 comments blog for apparently a non starter

    : )

  57. MG says:

    Sack Fergie

    Sell United

Let OT go the highest bidder

Small club mentality can have Carrington

Take us to America and make us the 51 state

    Put the Beckhams in charge

David the gaffer Posh number two – the kids the rest

No? Well everyone has a job here – get behind United and get on with it

    A date with destiny – a date with Costas – May 2011

  58. Slim says:

    @ MG

Ha,its gonna be a party in Greece. lol

  59. cantona7 says:

this is the article i am waiting for, Scott.. let me read first :)

  60. MG says:

    Slim

I’m so looking forward to it

After the birth of my son – destiny with Costas my dear friend beckons is the thing I’m looking forward to the most

    For United

For the kebabs – right Costas…

    : )

  61. cantona7 says:

Read the article and read the comments..

One thing that needs to be pointed out, and i hope for the last time; Ben Amos is registered in the main list because we have to register 3 GKs. No matter how old they are, we have to comply to the rules that says we have to register 3 (THREE) names for the GK. I hope people can understand that so no more “he’s under 21 he doesnt need to be registered”

and the other only glaring comment i noticed is from ericthedog.. SAF doesnt have a “pretty good track record” instead SAF has “THE BEST” track record in the world. =)

lastly, i think we can relax with De Laet’s issue now..

  62. Costas says:

    @MG, Slim

Yep. Kebabs for all of Rom. :D

  63. Fenwar says:

    @cantona7

“No matter how old they are, we have to comply to the rules that says we have to register 3 (THREE) names for the GK.”

Where in the rules does it say this though? :-|

    It doesn’t say it here:
    http://www.premierleague.com/page/Handbook/0,,12306,00.html
    or here:
    http://www.premierleague.com/page/Headlines/0,,12306~2142220,00.html

And that second page, which I am assuming is the official list submitted to the Premier League, lists Amos amongst the U21s, not in the main squad of 25.

I don’t think there is any rule to suggest that we couldn’t (for example) start with O’Shea in goal, or bring on Kuszczak as a striker. I know they had a 3 keeper rule at the World Cup (which North Korea had tried to get around and fell foul of) but I’ve never seen it mentioned in the Prem. Don’t know about Champions’ League either way.

I could be wrong here but I’ve yet to find this rule written down (or mentioned in the press) the only reason to believe it may still be the case is because we’ve only named 24 players (but I think that’s purely because we’ve only *got* 24 players over 21…???)

  64. zeemba says:

Are the inmates running the asylum?
Never mind the financial implications of the gnomes of Tampa
    - what is going on?
7.5 million for an unseen newborn – on the advice of Queiroz?
Nani taking (and missing) a penalty unbidden? (though he is
going to have a big year)
Worst of all Hargreaves (he’s paid loads for doing NOTHING)
taking the spot of a deserving younster….
    disturbing decisions at OT

  65. ajopaul says:

took a while to realize Almedia Da Cunha, Luis Carlos was infact NANI :)

  66. berba is magic says:

    @alan

wats your problem with van der vart mate???he said he wud join our team if he is guaranteed first team football nad i dun think sir alex really apreciated wat he said !!!! you have to earn the shirt !!!

  67. King Eric says:

Uninspiring??? How can a squad that contains Edwin, Rooney, Berba, Nani, Fletcher, Rio, Vidic , Evra, Valencia, Hernandez, Giggs, Scholes, Nev, Ando etc etc be fucking “uninspiring”? I think you are following the wrong team pal. Unbelievable.

  68. King Eric says:

Alan – Nani has one good game then ten bad???? No he doesn’t thats just made up. He is 22 mate. VDV is 28. Nani at 28 will be on a different planet to VDV. That good only Spurs wanted him.

  69. MG says:

    King Eric

We didn’t spend another 135 million on players and double again on the wages

    Uninspiring – : )

We did however buy the fastest footballer on the planet who scored more goals than Rooney Messi Kaka Ronaldo at the world cup (and the same combined before everyone starts : )

Now that was very inspiring : )

Funny how any United supporter can call there team uninspiring

This team does it all for me – maybe I like some of my fellow fans just know something other’s don’t

  70. Jemmie says:

Did anyone notice that some teams have their senior squad submitted without single English player? Arsenal have submitted their 25 man squad (20 exactly) and there’s no single English player in the list, also they’ve submitted the biggest under 21 squad in the EPL. This rule really sucks and will not help the National Team.

  71. Jemmie says:

This homegrown rule is stupid. Look, it says Hargreaves is foreign and Cesc Fabregas is British!

  72. BabyFaceAssassin says:

Was looking at the Chelsea and Arsenal squad they have named only 4 and 7 home grown players in their squad respectively. This means they will have to compensate it with other players and hence have like 19 and 20 players in their squad. Infact if you take a look at Chelsea with their defensive injuries right now, they may have Ferreira playing CB and Essien RB for their next game. So when people say United’s squad looks uninspiring it’s kind of silly. We definetly have more cover then our rivals.

  73. BabyFaceAssassin says:

I would have loved to add VDV to our squad at 8mill…but I can live without him not being there. What shocks me most is how the value of a player can fall by 10 mill within hours. It’s amazing how the mob does business over in Madrid. I for one won’t be suprised if VDV has a amazing season and bites then back in the ass like Snijder and Robben. Round of 16 Champions League Tottenham Hotspurs v Real Madrid 4-4. Spurs win on away goals.VDV scoring that important winning away goal at the Bernabeau. Read the headlines ” Vaart did you do, Jose?”

  74. punani says:

Just don’t see Hargreves ever playing in a United shirt again…

  75. Always Be Closing says:

@Jemmie – it doesn’t. It says Fabregas is homegrown because he was cultivated here – what it’s doing is trying to limit clubs like City from signing up all the foreign talent and calling it an English football club. This way, they are ‘investing’ in the league by buying players that have been raised here and promotes the other clubs raising more players to play and to sell.

  76. Ash says:

Overall a good squad. But the problem is midfield.Frankly i dont have faith in carrick.Hargo is injured ando has to do a nani ,Park is not a world class player he is just a squad player. So we have two left and they are scholes and fletcher(football genius).Scholes cant play every game.I just hope injuries dont hit us this season. But i won t be surprised if carrick is sold in january and we buy lass or annan or even rodwell.

  77. King Eric says:

Ash – You wouyld swap Carrick and get Lassana fucking Diara? Strange one. Cannot see Fergie doing this to be honest.

  78. mo says:

just loooked at the chelsea 25 and they only seem to have FOUR homegrown players but i thought the rule was they were meant to have at least EIGHT

  79. Costas says:

    @mo

They can name less than 8 homegrown, as long as they name less than 25 seniors. They had no problem trimming the fat since they only named 19 seniors!

  80. utdforever says:

    Ash what about Ando pal?

I think our midfield is sorted, I don’t know what all the whining’s about? Shoulda bought Ozil.. Shoulda bough VDV.. OZIL DIDN’T WANT TO FUCKING JOIN UTD SO FUCK HIM, LET HIM PLAY FOR THE VIRUS. VDV would only be a replacement for when Scholesy needs a rest so wouldn’t play many games and he’d most likely upset the dressing room, not to mention his sky high wages. FFS look at our midfield.. it’s stacked with talent! We’ve got players that can play in multiple positions so stop worrying! Sit back and enjoy our great club play some fantastic football instead of whining and whinging all the bloody time.
