What Does Carrick’s Deal Mean?

Michael Carrick has today signed a new deal at United which will keep him at the club until 2014, the summer he will turn 34-years-old.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at this great club,” Carrick said. “There is fantastic team spirit within the squad and I’m pleased to have committed my future to United. We are in a very good position at the moment and I am confident this team will be successful for many years to come.”

What does this mean for our club?

Possibilities:

1. United won’t be bringing in a top central midfielder
By the summer, Carrick would have had just one year to run on his current deal, meaning we would need to sell him then to make any money back on him. A better option would have been using him in a part-exchange deal with money for a Premier League based central midfielder. Jack Rodwell? Luka Modric? Jordan Henderson? With just a few months until the transfer window opens, it’s highly unlikely we’ve got him to agree this deal just to bump up his market value, like we did with Cristiano Ronaldo (and Wayne Rooney? Just kidding. Kind of).

2. Paul Scholes is retiring
A few weeks ago, Sir Alex Ferguson hinted that discussions over Paul Scholes’ contract extension weren’t going as smoothly as hoped. Despite claiming to be “hopeful” over a new deal, he also said: “I think Paul feels he has to play all the games.” The following week he said: “I want Scholes to stay, but he is such a proud person,” said Ferguson. “He wants to play in every game and I fully understand that.” It’s not looking good, is it? Carrick turns 30 this summer so after the retirements of Gary Neville and Edwin Van der Sar too, Michael is one of the more experienced and settled players, used to influence our younger players coming through.

3. Owen Hargreaves is going and Carrick will play even deeper
Carrick has been playing a deeper role this season than in his earlier seasons and maybe that is a position he plans to make his own. Hargreaves doesn’t have a future at the club so maybe Carrick is permanently the holding midfielder and United, whether Scholes retires or not, will still bring in a more attacking central midfielder.

4. We’re broke and can’t afford anyone else
Giving Michael Carrick a new three-year-deal is a lot cheaper than paying the transfer fee and extortionate wages of a world class central midfielder. If we win the league this year, maybe the club will wrongly assume we have enough in midfield for next season too.

Rightly said Scott…Though Carrick is good enough to deserve this new deal.
Plus i think we WILL be buying in the summer One creative midfielder and we can kick anyone’s ass…including Barcelona.

  2. Ash says:

Maybe another possibility is that we may want to sell carrick for a bit more price.
Sorry ti say i cant see united winning european champions league with this mid field.Frankly speaking
We need atleast one or even two great mid fielders and if we dont buy anyone then even sir alex is fooling us and is involved with glazer.

  3. mk says:

I know it’s fashionable to criticise Carrick but we know what he can do, and it’s not all terrible. Is there any real reason to expect the likes of Rodwell/Henderson to play better than him in the next 3 years (if we signed them?). I don’t think so.

    Stats:

Michael Carrick has the most amount of interceptions for a MF in the #epl, averaging 4.38 a game (Ando 1.9, Scholes 1.82, Fletch 1.54)

Michael Carrick has completed 830 out of 959 attempted passes this season for #mufc for a success rate of 86.5%. This success rate is highest of the season for an #epl midfielder starting over 50% of his club’s games. Scholesy highest otherwise.

This success rate is highest of the season for an #epl midfielder starting over 50% of his club’s games. Scholesy highest otherwise. #mufc So when he starts in the league, #mufc have conceded 0.66 goals per game, and when he doesn’t, 1.15. MC starts: goals conceded almost halve.

In 4 out of his 5 Champions League group stage starts this season, Michael Carrick covered more distance than any other #mufc player

Looked better first half against Chelsea, worth having around, just wish he could return to old form, used to be one of my favourite players.

  5. Jeet says:

My guess is all 4…How’s that for optimism? :D

  6. Chep13 says:

I am trully affraid we will be looking at the same pooooooor midfield next season as we have been looking during this one and much of the last one too

  7. Doghouse says:

I think we have to keep Carrick. He’s highly underrated but the stats speak for themselves, he keeps possession for us. He’s been an important part of what by any measure is a highly successful squad and the players have said as much even if many of the fans don’t get it.

Past that, yes, we need to sign a new midfielder, but that’s not a reflection on Carrick. I would argue that while he has not set the world on fire this season he has been quietly effective in a midfield fraught with problems. We need new blood in midfield, that is a given, because Hargreaves ought to be replaced, but I don’t believe Carrick is in any way a weak link.

I hate to point the finger like this, but I’m going to. If there is one player who has flat out disappointed this season then it is Fletcher. And I mean he has really disappointed. For the last couple of seasons he was fantastic, a real midfield soldier, one of our best players and he provided real steel in our central midfield. This season he seems to have lost that steel, he’s back to where he was a few seasons ago. He used to be a man that Arsene Wenger feared, but this season he feels like a place holder. And I hate to say that about anybody at United. He needs to get his mojo back.

Despite all that there is another elephant in the room, which is the potential retirement of Scholes and yes, even the retirement of Giggs. We’re going to lose two of the greatest talents ever to play the sport. In a word, ouch. We’re going to need to be prepared to do more with less, because you don’t merely replace players of that calibre. There is no replacing them.

Honestly I don’t even know who we might sign for our midfield. Twenty million doesn’t go all that far, and if you spend more than that whoever you sign needs to be Jesus or the fans will break him.

  8. MG says:

    It’s official

We are signing Jesus for our midfield

    Expect miracles galore lol ;)

  9. gerkeo says:

@mk: nice post. although we do need strengthening in the centre. Carrick is a strong squad player , but as you say its fashionable to be down on him at the moment.

  10. Born an Bred a RED says:

People theirs a fantastic article in the sun by chief sports writer steven howard, on why sir Alex Ferguson IS INFACT RIGHT!! About his criticism on that wanker atkinson he details atkinsons incompetence PERFECTLY did you know that when de jong broke ben arfas leg in that hoffic tackle he didn’t even book de jong that’s incredible but still awarded city a penalty that won the game. United fans on here this morning seriously read this article, it absolutely exposes the fa and its bias towards us.

  11. eddieTheRed says:

Carrick hasn’t been as good this season or last as he was in the first 3 seasons; however people rightly point out that his pass completion rate is one of the best in English football. I don’t believe there is any point in criticicising individual players in isolation because they don’t play in isolation; they play as part of a team.

The fact is, that all the players which form United’s midfield have allowed their collective standard to fall since the heady days of 2008. I don’t think United’s midfielders are as bad as they are made out to be but they definitely need a new creative central midfielder to link up play in that area because it all looks shaky and disfunctional at the moment.

If and when that new player arrives, the existing players will respond by raising their game. Just look how much better Tottenham’s midfielders have played since Van-der-Vart came into their team; we shall enjoy the same lift but we must not put this important purchase off any longer!

  12. YorYor says:

Many slate him off for doing the easy side and back passes… how come nobody else can match his stats if it is so easy, coupled with the number of interceptions he makes?

Great stats mk… but there’ll be some who are “not into stats”.

  13. Costas says:

I hope it’s not the 1st choice. I’ve said it for a while now that I expect some sort of rebuilding work to happen in midfield over the summer. At first, I thought that Carrick, Hargo and probably Gibbo would leave, making way for Cleverley and a top signing. Carrick is staying at the club, but I still feel that Hargo will leave. I think Scholes will sign a new deal, but not so sure about Gibson’s future.

Will we bring a new midfielder (other than Cleverley)? I think we will. Will he be an a famous player or a bargain ala Hernandez? I am leaning towards the latter. Nonetheless, Carrick staying is a wise move imo. We need his experience as we move to the next generation.

  14. Sergio (Lyon) says:

Good news i say, but we’re being a little pessimistic here.
Trust in Fergie, he’ll bring in 3 players in the summer : Top class goalie, top class creative midfielder and some unknown talent.

  15. Costas says:

    @mk

Cheers. Interesting stats. Carrick has definitely evolved into a quiter presence on the pitch now. The goals conceded stat in particular says it all about his new role.

What are you on about – we are in a season not on holiday with the transfer window open

Come back at the beginning of the next season with that comment if we haven’t bought anyone fella.

  19. Costas says:

Fletcher signs a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2015. So now, that’s him, Ando and Carrick that have signed new contracts. Scholes has to be next.

  20. carryduff_red says:

Carrick has been awful this year. No amount of excuses can disguise this. Hope this is not a sign of a quiet summer in the transfer market. A flux capacitor and we could bring back Becks and Keano!

  21. kanchelskis says:

Of all the above, I almost hope it’s number 3. It will a devestating end to Hargreaves’ time with us, but I think Scholesy is more important. Carrick actually mops up relatively well in front of the back 4, and hopefully this leaves open the possibility of signing a top central/attacking midfielder who can spray good passes around, taking the pressure off Carrick to do this.

Surprised to see Henderson mentioned, Scott. He’s flattered to deceive, if you ask me. I’d much prefer Rodwell or, in our wildest dreams, Modric. He is the missing piece – no doubt.

  22. MG says:

Sir Alex was right with what he said

That’s a fair point – respect to the man – not enough around.

    nice stats
    Costas
with carrick/fletcher/Anderson/cleverly/Gibson, if we bring in a mid this summer, where would that leave Anderson/cleverly, I personally feel for both of them next season is very crucial for Anderson it should be his break out season like nani did this season and for cleverly he is too good to loan out again, it is going to be his maiden season in first team, apart from these two we have two very experienced mids in carrick/fletch, where will the new Signing fit in
and Anderson will have to be the creative spark, It’s time to perform to his potential, I will put more emphasis on him rather than an yet to be known new signing that may or may not happen

  26. thedubdemon says:

@mk interstin reading.. maybe once people get used to idea that hes never going to be a scholes and catch on to fact hes doing a solid job in the deeper role hell get less stick. its almost like hes being made a scapegoat for fact weve been lacking a bit of invention/drive in MF.

my guess is that if scholes does sign up for next year, fergie will give ando another year to try make the creative MF spot his own. after all thats the position he played before he joined us.. he was just unfortunate that his youth/energy has been used to fill the gap that hargreaves left. i reckon if we can get him on the pitch in a more advanced position on a regular basis he will come on leaps and bounds and all this talk of needing a creative MF will go away

  27. Mannings says:

Despite the huge debts the Glazers have put on the club, I still think we have money available. I fully trust Fergie when he says he could buy if he wanted. Lets face it, if the club was completely broke, would we spend £7.5m on Bebe and £10m on an unproven defender. (Smalling has been a great buy, but it was still a risk at the time.)

  28. kanchelskis says:

    redpete,

I’m not sure about Charlie Adam. It’s interesting to observe Blackpool without him recently. They’ve looked terrible. Yes, this may indicate that he’s a very good player, to be so instrumental to what they do, but it also indicates that he will be entirely accustomed to being top dog and the whole game revolving around him. To make the step up to a team of United’s quality, with that notion ingrained in you, I should imagine is very difficult, and I would be surprised if he’d play anywhere near as well if he wasn’t the best player on the pitch.

  29. MG says:

This is how it feels to be city – lost the number

Mancini admits that Balotelli ignores him and doesn’t talk to him

But as long as he is doing the job on the pitch it’s ok

  30. shebangsthedrums says:

Sky news – Darren Fletcher has signed a new four year contract.
I’m happy both Fletch and Carrick have signed new deals. They’ve been good value for us so far, neither is having their best season, but we know they can and will be better. I think Carrick is low on confidence at the moment, it’s no wonder the amount of stick he gets. I personally think Scholes may not sign for next season and fergie will bring in a top class replacement for him (if avaiable) and some younger signings ie Jack Rodwell. Fletch and Carrick will be the experience in the side that will help the younger players coming through.

  31. Dave Malaysia says:

    Interesting points by STR.

I think a GK is top of the list and have a sneaky feeling Ashley Young may be heading our way. I think Young is an awsome player and seeing his pace and skills from the stands in the Villa game was quite impressive.
He has pace, skill and can play right, left, attacking mid and even as a makeshift striker if needed. He would be ideal for the midfield slot, and with Tony V coming back to fitness i think with TonyV, Nani and Young you would have a nice interchangeable trio who could cause havoc by switching sides, or playing behind the front 2.

  39. ancha says:

I feel that SAF is banking on carrick/fletch/anderson and expecting cleverly/pogba/tunnicliffe to fit in first team in next 2 seasons, from the comments he.made regarding pogba/tunnicliffe I strongly think that’s the case

  40. Costas says:

    @ancha

Good point. If it’s just the 5 of them, or even if Gibson leaves this summer, then I can see Fergie bringing in one more player. Like I said, we need some fresh faces there. I agree about Anderson. If he stays healthy and he is there or our pre season season training, next season will a huge one for him.

Ultimately, the decision on whether to sign a new midfielder (probably a low profile transfer), will depend on whether Scholes stays or not.

  41. MG says:

Kaka injured for most of season – most of the times he is substituted because he’s not the same player that was at Milan

Yaya Toure left a team he won everything with to be the highest paid player in world football in a team who has won fuck all

Mascherano left Liverpool for a dream move to Barcelona where

A He has had no games or next to no games since signing
    B. The last time I saw him he was playing in defence for consecutive Barca games only to be dropped afterwards.

Michael Carrick has had his problems too – but he brings a calmness to the midfield and sometimes without him we look rushed and hurried for no apparent reason

  47. kk says:

We all agree Carrick doesnt play the same way as he did previously but we are failing to see he is being played in a new position that he is getting used to. You dont become a good attacking player to become a good defending midfielder oevr night. A lot rides on Carricks carefulness with the pass because once he loses the ball it ends up at the back of the net. He is getting used to this position and although he is a bit cautious he may become aggressive once he learns the full trade of the position he will be good. He may have been signed as a result of plans to bring in a new defensive player and free him to do what we know he can do. We cry for the young players to be prooted but no sooner do they make a mistake than they are vilified. We laugh at mercineries in other clubs but we want them coz no top player we want is going to come cheap. I will get satisfaction winning the league with players written off by the ABU, the fans themselves but trusted by Fergie. Some of us are speaking with finality as if they are in the know yet they get their information and their views is affected by the very press they term ABU. If you hate them yet crave for their approval then defiance cant describe you.

They then went up to the Dean and said that they had gone out to a wedding last night and on their return the tyre of their car burst and they had to push the car all the way back and that they were in no condition to appear for the test.

So the Dean said they could have the re-test after 3 days. They thanked him and said they would be ready by that time.

On the third day they appeared before the Dean. The Dean said that as this was a Special Condition Test, all four were required to sit in separate classrooms for the test. They all agreed as they had prepared well in the last 3 days.

The Test consisted of only 2 questions with a total of 100 Marks.

  58. MG says:

    Dave Malaysia

Yep but that’s the whole point

A referee took care of a decision within a game that everyone else didn’t like

The media didn’t like it the non believers of course didn’t like it and worse the FA didn’t like it – yet the decision was made and should have been respected.

Now cue all hell breaking loose – without a question this is a knock on effect and most def. could therefore persuade the referee for the next match to take a harder line on United – this would be seen to be therefore equalling out the apparent injustice on Saturday regarding Rooney – though as mentioned it is legally dealt with by the ref.

However this should not be the case but quite clearly as the game carries on it happens that way.

Sir Alex says something and instead of the ref. being bought to book for his shocking display – one that does not just highlight one match against Chelsea but as many are aware numerous ones against them – we are now paying the consequences for a ref decision that no one liked but couldn’t do nothing too – and for a ref who made wrong decisions but one that everyone is prepared to stand by notably the authorities because it’s karma!

I’ve lost count the amount of time I have read that in the papers – it’s vile and yet in another way it’s a mockery that no one wishes to see for what it is.

At this rate Rooney should have been banned already as I have mentioned before maybe nothing would have been blown out of proportion and we would have maybe had a fair game on Tuesday

    All hypothetical again.

I think the only shame is that the likes of Pogba, Morrison or Tunnicliffe have not been given any game time this season, and with it being the business end of the season are unlikely to get any now – which means next year they may be slowly brought in to cup games etc, or even sent out on loan – which doesn’t solve the immediate problem of the apparent lack of bite in midfield.

  70. GoatinaUnitedShirt says:

Well Im going to shock a few on here but Im bloody happy about the Carrick deal.
Carrick has grown into a possition and made it his own. He stops the majority of attacks coming straight for goal and makes the attacking team pass the ball out wide. There he has to make extra passes and crosses any of which can go wrong and our fullbacks are world class and can cope with most. Getting the ball wide isnt always a good thing as Carrick knows. If its got to a situation that an attacking team has hit a wall down the middle then the defence is in possition and bunched up in the area. Any ball coming in is easy pickings for our lofty defenders. Its easier to head a ball out anywhere than for a striker to climb, acurately place the ball all under pressure. Carrick does his job better than anyone at the club.

    SO How about this:

    5. With any eventual replacement for Scholes being a player that needs to play games and next season we have the wingers fit (more than likely). Wouldn’t it be wise to make Fletcher a bench warmer. Sure he runs end to end and presses and in games where we play 3 in midfield he has his worth but in a 2 in central midfield game he has very little use. Hes not that hot on the wing where he played when he was younger so his covering of possitions is poor. Fletcher is neither a bonifide DM or AM he has qualities but hes starting to look like Gerrard but without the shot. Running around, often drug away by an experienced opponent and not sticking to any particular game plan. I think Fergusson just realises that if Scholes doesnt want to carry on and Carrick isnt felt welcome in staying then our midfield would consist o Fletcher in DM and a new kid at AM with Ando as the 3rd man. Im sorry to say Carrick is a better player for United than Fletcher.

“The cunt’ Collymore has spoken, and spoken shit. No surprises there though.
What about FA cups, you thug? And the rat-munchers not winning the league since 1990, yet they’re the benchmark. WHAT THE HELL???

  72. kk says:

    Excellent, Fletch is in.

  73. voiceofmu says:

People that can’t see what a player like Carrick brings to the team annoy me. He’s a great keeper of possesion, great passer, often makes timely interceptions, brings calm to the midfield and scores a few decent goals a season too.

    Compare him to

Anderson – good in the tackle, alot of energy but quite often his passing is shocking & can’t score to save his life. He has potential but needs to start delivering every time he wears the shirt.

Fletcher – good in the tackle, was bossing games last year but less so this season, scores some vital goals, decent passer of the ball.

Scholes – looks like he’s retiring.

Giggs – not really a central midfielder in my book.

Gibson – will be fortunate if he’s still a united player next season. good shot on him but anything else about him that says he’s good enough to wear the man united shirt.

Hargreaves – moving on, big shame.

so there you have it. Think that show’s the current importance of Carrick in United’s side/squad at present.

Admittedly we do need probably 2 top drawer central midfielders. Why we didn’t take van der vart god only knows. Will be an interesting summer, in a way if Scholes does hang up his boots at least it will require a call to action from SAF and the Glazers to get the chequebook out.

  74. GoatinaUnitedShirt says:

Saying that, new topic scott, Fletchers signed a new deal to 2015.

  75. Real red devil says:

I would like to see a left footed winger in our team and a CAM .I prefer Alexis Sanchez as my CAM option any suggestions for a left footed winger apart from Bale although i would like to see Bale in our team.

  76. GoatinaUnitedShirt says:

Bale at United, I bloody hope not he is complete garbage. Hes overhyped in the Carlton Palmer mould. He did sod all against us and hasnt done anything against any real opposition. Sure he played well against Inter but that has more to do with the fact that Italian football is played at a snails pace and they couldnt run for the full 90 minutes. Bale did very little early on in that game it only ended well because of Spurs superior fitness. Bale is a monkey end of. Unless we encroach onto zoos and the jungle in order to sell more shirts then Bale doesnt have any comercial value either.

  77. willierednut says:

With Hargreaves almost certain to leave, Carrick was always gonna sign a new deal. It’s done to death on here, United need a CM in the summer and I’ll be flabbergasted, If we don’t invest in that area. I don’t think SAF is a fool, he knows what United need and he’ll get It sorted in the summer. Fletch is signed up as well, good news, getting the core of our squad tied down, to long term deals.

  78. jb1891 says:

I admit i’m disappointed that Carrick has signed a new deal because as many have said he hasn’t really played that well for the last 12-18 months, with him turning 30 in the summer and only having a year left on his contract I thought that he would move on in the summer. Those stating that his passing stats are still impressive take into consideration that most of his passing is 5-10 yards,he rarely attempts the 30-40 yard killer passes he used to. The vast majority will say that the midfield has been the weak part of the team for the last couple of seasons and is in need of makeover, the thing is with the new deals that have been signed and if Scholes was to follow then you can’t really see many changes happening next season to improve this. Hargreaves is out of contract, Gibson’s future seems unclear,Cleverly will return in the summer so we might make one midfield signing and hopefully give some of the youngsters a chance to step up. I would like us to sign Sanchez , Sahin and De Gea but I won’t hold my breath.

  79. gogeafrica says:

Well it  good thing to read that both players have signed   deal..am  fan of carrick but  ♥ berbatov more..and  hope fergie use both rooney n berbatov  sunday..

  80. United says:

The word extortionate is a bit out of place, they demand the market rate, who are we to judge (envy is bad). The last point that you should have added is that we are seldom going to look good in any big game, ever with Michael ‘passenger’ Carrick politely staring out the window as the ball passes him by.

  81. GoatinaUnitedShirt says:

    @Real red devil
Whats wrong with the Fletcher article, there are a few little points he seems to not take into account but generally he seems to have a fair point.
I always laughed when United fans said we only lost the champions league final because Fletcher was missing, in my eyes that was ludicrous. Fletcher at the top of his game would never do anything against the likes of Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets and yaya Toure. Im glad hes signed a new deal to stay as we need to keep this squad together but I think its fair to say he isnt the answer to our midfield problems. Hes a squad player.

  82. willierednut says:

Goat – Who is then? Let put it this way, who do you want United to sign?

  83. Real red devil says:

    @Goatinaunitedshirt

i like constructive criticism but that was bit too much for me.I dont think Fletch has done that bad in this season.Dont you think its a good thing that Fletch signed a new deal?.We need him in our midfield. So we need to stand by him.

  84. Dave Malaysia says:

Sometime ago, couple of years maybe,Fergie said he wanted this group of players to grow together ,becoming the new seniors in the team ,keeping the club culture healthy.

Also that players like Gary,Giggs,Scholes,VDS become coaches at the club.

The Fergie made it clear Jonny Evans has what it takes and will get better and is our first team player and future first choice centreback. Now Fergie has confirmed that Jonny and Chris are the replacements for Vidic and Rio when the time comes.

As for Gibson he has improved every year and Fergie trusts him with major games ,thats a sign that Gibson may have a future in that midfeild of ours.

So some of u are going to be disapointed with them boys signing new contracts.

I said many times in here this season is huge, as we start seeing Fergie decide on many careers and shape the future of team.

Thats what we are seeing ,these are the decisions, huge decisions for the team that he is building.

    Anders lindegaard
    Vidic,Evra,Jonny,Chris,Fabio,Rafael
    Carrick,Fletcher,Giggs,Anderson,Nani
    Rooney,Javier,Berbatov

Thats the solid long term term team, with Giggs guiding them for one more year.If i missed anyone let me know.
All others even Welbeck needs to return, make an impact and sign on for longer term ,then can be included. Otherwise its still potential not solid.

  85. KingOfStretfordEnd says:

It’s a great thing that Carrick’s been deal-ed down, but I still think we’ll invest in midfield in the summer. You can’t have too many midfielders, as we have have found out during injury periods.

Carrick brings composure to the team. He’s done well the past few games, let’s hope he only keeps on getting better.

  86. Ash says:

This is great piece of business done by united by signing fletcher for another 4 years.Fletch is a great player he has just lost his form.He will be back to his best.
Giggs signed, vidic signed, evra signed, rooney signed, ando signed and now these two.Great work fergie and co.
Now i just hope we also sign nani for longer period.
Only a foll will think we are doomed.

  87. Dave Malaysia says:

Did John O’Shea sign a new contract or is that the next announcement ?

  88. Dave Malaysia says:

@Ash : Nani signed long term earlier this season.

  89. Rai says:

We should never have let Djemba Djemba leave. That was Fergies second worst mistake…first was not keeping David Bellion

  90. willierednut says:

Also, anyone thinking, that because Fletch and Carrick have signed new deals, then that means, we’ll bring no one else in, is wide off the mark. There’s scope for some chopping and changing. We don’t know yet, If Gibson will leave, or maybe he’ll go out on loan somewhere. Will Cleverley be given a chance next season? There’s some big decisions to be made in the summer.

  91. Ash says:

    Fool*

  92. Ash says:

    @Dave
Really.Sorry didnt know that.I thought only ando signed.
I really hope welbeck, cleverler and kiko become our future of the club.

  93. TonyBee says:

    Goat.
Carrick is a squad player at best imo. we do not have a midfield battler if Fletch isn’t playing….Carrick at his best a few seasons ago, he was hoping to take over from the Ginger Prince but alarmingly seem to have lost a lot of pace and the ablilty for the defence splitting pass….preferring the sideways or back pass….. he also runs out of steam unlike Fletch…
Ando was originally brought in to be a battling Midfield general but has yet for fill his promise….

whether or not we have the funds we need to generate some genuine power in the midfield….i have a feeling that Gibbo might be off in the summer to pastures new and a couple coming in….but I will never try to outguess SAF

  94. TonyBee says:

Rai…. hope you are joking with regard to Bellion and DJemba2

  95. Dave Malaysia says:

@willierednut: ur right and the speculation is going to be on overdrive. udinese said bid made for sanchez and its got everyone guessing, then scalke say Manutd want to speak about Neur.

Then we have Steven Defour. Quiet now but will come up soon.

    This is madness I tell you,madness! ;)

  96. devil without a cause says:

    Dave.

O’Shea has signed long back mate………….. saw some bashy statuses on fb that day………..

  97. Real red devil says:

    @Dave malaysia

I see a good future for Cleverly in our team.He can play both as a winger and cm.So he will be a real asset to our team.I think Fergie will introduce the likes of Pogba,Morrison,King and Tunniclife to the firs team when he feels is the right time.I dont think it will be too long.

  98. hammons says:

it means that he is well worth the deal considering the absorbent amount of money CMs are costing. Adam’s left foot is worth 10m for crying out loud ;)

A lot of people have proved that I am in the minority by thinking Carrick is full value for the United shirt —

  99. slim says:

    @ willierednut

i mentioned this to you the other day and even though STR has provided 4 options i think its a mixture of the first 2 points, maybe scholes is retiring but i’ve got a feeling SAF will NOT buy a CM this summer, just my thoughts

  100. random says:

Carrick’s new deal simply means we have 3 more years of sideways and backwards passing to look forward to.

  101. Rai says:

TonyBee – no mate I seriously think we missed out…just like we did with William Prunier as a world class CB. They could have been the new Holy Trinity.

  102. Dave Malaysia says:

@ Ash: Kiko,Tom,Welbeck are Fergies babes but still they have to come back make inroads into the first team and then sign long term.

And dont forget a certain Mame Baram Diouf.

Then theres Drinkwater,Corry,Norwood,Gill,Matty,Dudgeon,De Laet. This summer we will know who continues and who leaves. The decisions here will pave the way for thier juniors Pogba,Tunni to come thru, clear path to first team.

Then there is the matter of one messrs Gabriel Obertan and Bebe.

  103. willierednut says:

Slim – Well mate, I think we do need another midfielder, but It’s open to debate, whether we will sign someone in the summer. If we don’t, then the Glazer issue will rear It’s head again. Big sigh.

  104. Jeet says:

Dave – agreed, but the problem is IMO its still not a world beating squad. Sure we will keep making the later stages of the Cl and challenge very hard for the prem every year with that squad. Bcos its very close to being a world beating squad. But its not absolutely there. We need just 1-2 players to make it truly world class. You put in a proven world class MF like Schweinsteiger or Sneidjer, a little more flair like Sanchez, and a world class GK, you will be there.

Dont get me wrong, Im not one who wants signings for signings sake, but Im one hell of a greedy bastard. Ive said this before, but let me reiterate. I see this as an unique opportunity to break away from the pack in England and have a good chance at knocking Barca and Real off their fucking perch.

Take a look around – Chelsea have weakened, they are transitioning and trying to transition quickly, which is not easy – they havent been succesful in integrating their home grown talent.
Arsenal – so long as Wenger keeps being the obstinate penny pincher he is proving to be, they will always be the pretty girl who never quite walked down the aisle.
Liverpool and City – less said the better.
Spurs are the one we should watch out for, IMO. Like him or hate him Harry R. has done a good job. He is a shrewd sonovabitch, seems to be in for the long haul, and seems to have the support of the board. Builds a team, not a random collection of superstars.

Europe – Barca and Real, Bayern to an extent. That’s it. Serie A is effectively fucked, and I dont see them getting out of the doldrums.

So, the stage is set for us. The current squad is not as bad as some would have you believe and the proof lies in the table. Add a little stardust, a little proven class, we could dominate, and I mean really dominate, for the next 5, even 10 years. With the financial fair play regulations coming in, our youth setup is going to be a big competitive advantage. All that is needed is a little tweak here, a little tweak there – small in quantity but fucking deadly additons to the squad. The future is fucking RED, lad. BELIEVE.

  105. slim says:

    @willierednut

SAF has known we need a midfielder for years, personally i want him to stay provided room is made for a new CM or two, but like i said with Fletcher signing a new contract and Ando staying as well there little or no room for a new player even if Owen is sold off, Cleverley,Pogba and other youngsers will wating in the wings as well.

Personally i’m disappointed and i’ver resigned my self to the fact;i’ve done so for a few years now and i’ve seen nothing in what SAF says or does to change my opinion that he doesn’t want to meddle in that area of the pitch. Beats me if i’m being honest but there you have it. I think he could go for a LW or even a striker, anyone wanna bet that Berbatov or Owen are showed the door this summer?

  106. Rollins says:

Cant say i’m delighted he’s signed but its a good move by(and for) the club. He’s not one of the world’s best in that position, but he’s the best at the club right now, so its very sensible to keep him.
And by the way, the passing stats dont tell the whole story, most times he just gives the ball to whoever is closest to him.

  107. slim says:

It would really suck if it were berba and that twat Rooney is allowed to stay, the timing of the announcements
is a clear message to all those with United in their interests that there’s no major summer buys, maybe a LW or if the rumours about Evra are true a LB and of course a search for a new number 1. Even that isn’t a certainty, he’ll wanna keep PIG and Anders;difficult if you ask me

  108. TonyBee says:

Rai …. will discount your comments from now on as you know fuck all about football if you seriously believe them two clowns are any good….

  109. Jeet says:

Ohh, and those of you who are saying that Fletch has regressed – has it occurred to you that he might just be close to getting knackered? He played like a fucking demon, in almost every match last season, Add to that his role was that of a mf runner/enforcer and that’s very taxing with a high chance of picking up bad knocks. This season as well, he has played a lot of games, again with the same role. I wouldnt be surprised if he needs a rest – and thats one of the other reasons why we need to add to the MF. Its not just one player, but many other players might start performing better because they are rested. In fact, I wouldnt wonder thats one of the reasons for Evra performing at a slightly lower level this season as well.

  110. Real red devil says:

    @Slim
What’s the rumour about Evra mate he signed a long term contract recently.

  111. Dave Malaysia says:

@devil without a cause: that was just speculation ,no official signing. His last contract was while back, suppose to be due now for new one.

@Jeet: Agreed they are not playing as great as we wud like ,showing only glimpses this season.

Sanchez,Sniejder ,Nuer,Steven Defour maybes, difficult to guess who the Boss will sign.

me go ,get food, watch burn notice, castle. enjoy detective kate beckett ,maybe think of hayley.

  112. King Eric says:

slim – Evra rumours are bollocks mate. He has just signed a deal .

Fletcher isnt a squad player he is one of the best box to boxers about but has suffered with form this season. Everyone was saying a year ago he is the first name on the teamsheet. He is excellent. Look at his performance in the Manc derbies and all the big games. Much more than a squad player.

  113. United says:

Carrick doesn’t bring composure he brings nothing. He panics when pressured, only passes sideways and YES I know football before anyone gives me the condescending he does the intangibles, keeps the game flowing garbage. Is he a world class midfielder? Fuck no, is he the English Xavi? FUCK NO, don’t insult the great man by comparing him to Michael Carrick. Go to Guardian Chalkboards and see for yourself, look through all the big games that Carrick has started, One, maybe two forwards passes, the rest are sideways. We aren’t that sort of team, he can’t pass it off to someone else when HE is part of the creative outlet. Passing to retain possession by giving it to other creative players is fine, but giving it to Vidic, Evra, Ferdinand, Fletcher all achieves nothing and thats where 99% of where his passes go.

  114. King Eric says:

Oh and I very much doubt Berba will be sold. He will see out his time at United imo.

  115. willierednut says:

Slim – If nothing happens in the summer, then there’s a chance, with all our rivals strengthening their squads, we could fall behind. Not out of the top 4, but if others around us keep buying players and we don’t, then that might be the case. I honestly think we will do something, hoping anyway.

  116. Dave Malaysia says:

    ;) ;) ;)

  117. CJ7 says:

    We are broke!

  118. King Eric says:

United – Well if he brings nowt why the fuck has Fergie just given hinm a 3 year deal? He clearly knows nothing.

  119. Rai says:

TonyBee – they were potentially fantastic :)

  120. RedKeighley says:

Sadly I think it is 4 and reflects both a lack of ambition on the part of the club which in turn probably confirms we do not have the funds to sign a world class midfielder! The suggestion that Carrick may play deeper is very worrying as his tacking and defensive play leave alot to be desired. So we have a midfielder who doesnt get forward and scores goals, doesnt take control of the midfield even against poor teams and is not a reliable defensive midfielder.
    So WTF are we doing??

  121. DohaRed says:

    Rai – haha, nice one

  122. willierednut says:

What are we doing? We’re top, aren’t we? In a sense, there’s no need talking about potential arrivals now, we’ll know more in the summer.

  123. Don Hernandez says:

It means he’s a good midfielder, the boss wants him, and everyone complaining about the midfield was wrong.

  124. mara says:

That means, WE DONT HAVE MONEY! :)

  125. Rai says:

Willierednut – agreed mate…we should be thinking about the next two months starting with Sunday, no point trying to second guess what Fergie is thinking we’ll all end up wrong anyway!!! I will also stop pleading with Fergie to bring back Djemba Djemba, Bellion and W.Prunier….we missed out simple as.

  126. kanchelskis says:

I really doubt that this new deal rules out a summer acquisition. As has been discussed, I very much doubt Gibson and Hargreaves will be with us, and it looks like Scholes is having his doubts.

This could potentially leave us with only Fletcher, Carrick and Anderson as centre-mids, with emergency backup from Giggs and Park. Nowhere near enough cover for a top team fighting for 3 and a half trophies.

Would not be at all surprised if Fergie stepped up his pursuit of a top-class creative midfielder in the summer, to play alongside various combinations of the aforementioned trio.

  127. Don Hernandez says:

We will still sign a midfielder and a winger in the summer.

  128. Rai says:

Don Hernandez – We wot get a winger unless we get rid of obertan or Bebe, which won’t happen. Nani and Valencia will take some displacing in the team

  129. slim says:

    @King Eric

my bad didnt hear that piece of news, been away from all things United for a while now, either way signs are there SAF wont get the CM we all think he should get

  130. wakey says:

    POINT 4:

Certainly not the case. Even Andy Green (andersred for those more familar with his blogging name) who is one of the most Anti Glazer out there and is prone of burying good news and twisting things to make them sound worse told Stretford-end.com

“The club has a very large amount of cash in the bank (£134m). This large balance arose largely from the sale of Ronaldo (£80m) and Aon prepaying £36m of their 4 year sponsorship deal in June 2009. With this large cash pile and the club making more profits each year than it has to pay in interest, there should be a lot of money available for new players.” SOURCE: http://www.stretford-end.com/blog/2011/03/manchester-united-debt-and-ownership-explained/

Admittedly he does then pull the whole “The dividend rights still exist however, and there is a suspicion that the club’s low transfer spending is because the cash in the bank will at some point be taken by the Glazers” line that MUST and the Anti Glazer crowd have been claiming is going to happen every season since the takeover

Its actually an interview worth reading because despite a few of his usual digs its the most balanced thing I have ever seen from Andy Green. Shame he cant be as objective on his own blog because he shows some actual intelligence

  131. wakey says:

    @mk

See I think you have picked on a few things that most United fans seem to be unable to appreciate. SAF seems to have changed Carricks role, his jobs there to break things up, keep the team ticking and let the more creative players do their job.

The inception stat for example shows Carricks main attribute and thats his positioning and reading of a game, he doesn’t need to be Roy Keane when he can read the game and get himself in position to intercept with ease. Its a shame Gibson doesn’t have just 25% of Carricks ability.

People will say his passing stats are due to him always playing sideways or backwards and he does attempt less forward balls these days but his passes keep the ball in our possession and keeps it moving

The problem is he just isn’t flashy for a midfielder and he has the same issue with the fans that Berba was having in that what he does is hard to appreciate.

  132. wakey says:

    @Costas

Gibsons off imho. While he has been better in the last few games he played due to being played in an AM role his positioning and reading of the game is still poor when its called on. For him to be anywhere near effective you have to build the team around him and he isn’t good enough to do that.

On Scholes I don’t think he is going to sign. There has been too many hints coming out of OT that he won’t do, for some players you would say it means nothing but Scholes has never been a player who drags his feet on new contracts and if there is something causing him to its serious and its almost certainly going to be hard for United to change his mind.

With Hargreaves I have to say I think he should join us on a pay as you play deal. He owes the club really and we can always loan him out on short term deals if he needs first team games to get ready. Mind you I believe i’m right in saying that United would be able to claim most of the transfer fee and the wages he has paid back against insurance if we let him go.

On Midfielders the 24mill bid udenise got for Sanchez is apparently in Italy being said to have been from United and than Sanchez is eager to join. So he could be the new midfielder coming in. And in the recent Youth Cup game Neville hinted that Pogba would be involved in the first team next season.

    @redpete

On Deadline day there were all those rumours about Adam and a user here posted some supposed inside knwowledge about United being close to signing him. He then later posted that it was off because the United medical staff had looked at his records and had concerns.

He was dismissed by most at the time BUT this week it came out that he does have a persistant problem which see’s him have abdominal pains after games. So perhaps united did make a bid and have it accepetd only for the medical staff at United to see an issue

  133. wakey says:

    @Dave Malaysia

Rooney should have been sent off, the ref made a mistake having clearly not seen the incident fully so Rooney got lucky and wigan have a right to be annoyed. But the refering in that game atleast was cosistant with wigan getting away with what should have been a red as well. TBH he even deserved the FA to go back and ban him and the rules really should be changed so that no matter what the ref reports all incedents are looked at and bans decreased, increased or added occordingly. I know refs will say it undermines them but IMHO it would push them to do better and would give them backup as players are often good at deciving the ref thinking they will get away with it. If they knew a panel watched everything they may cut it out

RE: SAF Ban. I think it will be a minimum of 5 games. He will get 3 for this and his 2 that were suspended for effectivly calling the ref fat will be applied on top

The Chelsea game on the other hand was a disgrace in reffering. You atleast expect a ref to be fairly conistsant over 90minutes and for teh odd mistakes due to human error and positioning to be spread eveningly. However there was no such consistancy across that game with Chelsea players getting decisions in their favour for almost identical situations no matter what end of the pitch it was (How does Vidic get a second yellow for a tug of a shirt when Luiz was pulling Ronneys shirt in teh box and then wrapped his arms around him a few short minutes before he took Rooney out in contact that was more deliberate and greater than that of Smalling for the penalty. And why was Luiz given nothing for body checking hernandez when Vidic gave away a freekick which helped him get the later second yellow for a less physical bidy check on Drogba)

    @gerkeo

Rooney has signed but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a deal of convinance for both parties. Rooney gets some extra money for 8 months and United get full money from a transfer of him in the simmer

    @United

Would Xavi make as many forward passes in England. Hell no. Infact watch the amount of sieways passes he was making against the Gooners. Spanish football (and on the whole international football) sees the teams sit off each other which gives the likes of Xavi the chance to make no risk forward passes

  134. Nafis says:

I really hope Carrick can get his game back like he did in our UCL winning season

  135. StatesideAussie says:

Haven’t read all the comments, but there is a fourth possibility that’s not mentioned in Scott’s original report. What if we do have the money but SAF just can’t find the “right player” available — meaning, not only a player with the physical skill and talent to succeed, but one with the other attributes that Ferguson values so highly, and one who matches what his plan for the team? There are undoubtedly such players around, but whether they’re available or not is another issue. Bastian the Beast springs to mind, but I believe he recently re-signed a long term deal. If the “right player” is not available, this may convince SAF to stay out of the market (I suspect he would rather buy no-one than spend money on a player he doesn’t think is right), or it may persuade him to alter his plan (for example, he might want a defensive/holding MF but go for a creative MF instead and find some other way to fill the other hole).

The fact that he is taking so much time to settle on a long-term replacement for Scholes, and is clearly trying to eke as much out of Scholes as possible, may mean there is no money available, it may SAF is not happy with the available options, and it may also mean that his preferred plan depends on the youngsters maturing and he wants to give that as much time as possible. Most likely, it’s a combination of those things.

  136. willierednut says:

StatesideAussie – Contracts are worth the paper they’re printed on.

  137. United says:

    @Wakey

Watch Spain against England in that friendly and see what he does, he is calm under pressure and does what Carrick is supposed to do.

As to there not being any of the ‘right’ players available. Come on, there are so many talented midfielders around this year, even more last year with Ozil and Khedira around. BUT, we didnt bid for anyone, ANYONE. What does that tell you? Be serious.

Henderson, Schweinsteiger, Nuri Sahin, Keisuke Honda, Shinji Kagawa, hell even Mahamadou Diarra or Lassana could do a great job for us. EVEN SCOTT PARKER would make it into our midfield. Spurs’ midfield is the one we should have, Bale, Modric, Lennon and Van Der Vaart vs Giggs, Scholes, Fletcher and Nani.

Our success has been based on our defence for coming on 3 years now and what a defence it is. But our midfield is personified by Carrick (with the exception of Nani this season). Weak, insipid, devoid of inspiration and crying out for rejuvenation.

  138. wakey says:

    @StatesideAussie

In addition to your point, alot of the players people mention may be top quality but you would they be sucessful playing for United in the English league.

Look at Veron, one of the best players in the world when we signed him but couldn’t settle in the English league. Atleast with Carrick you have a player who you know can do a job at United and be ready to step in if a big signing completely fails OR at the very least give them time to settle in

  139. willierednut says:

Didn’t we try for Ozil? He wanted to go to Spain. Schweinsteiger would cost between 30 and 40 million, now he’s got his new contract. I watched the lad Sahin, on Saturday, against Bayern. Very impressive. But, what would It take to get him to OT? We all know the midfield needs new blood. I’m sure the club are working to find the right players.

  140. United says:

Its extremely unfair to say that Veron couldn’t settle.

We didn’t adapt the team enough to his preferred way of playing. Imagine him playing for Arsenal now, I am quite sure he would be successful, he was a lot like Xabi Alonso, only infinitely more talented.

  141. willierednut says:

    *hard*

  142. GLAZERS---OUT!!!!! says:

Carrick and Fletchers deals were worth 22.5 Million together, so money is obviously there…
i would have tried to make a deal with spurs for carrick, with modric in return… oh well

  143. Zelh says:

    Honda is a winger.
Kagawa plays off the striker and is not an option to play in a 442. no physical strenght at all.
Wtf Mahamadou Diarra? Are you serious?

Yeah Bale, Modric, Lennon and Van der Vaart and who of them is playing defensivly? No one? Surprise.
You would win nothing with such a midfield.

  144. United says:

    @willierednut

HOW GOOD is Sahin, ahhhh, finally someone who has seen him. That man is an amazing player

  145. smartalex says:

The commenter ‘United’ chose his name to offset the ant-United nature of the majority of his posts. An example, is him calling Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, Ji-Sung Park, Darren Gibson, Anderson and Paul Scholes ” Weak, insipid, devoid of inspiration and crying out for rejuvenation.”

Your name is a lie. You are not ‘United’

If you chose to reply, be honest and apologise. Do not try to explain away your lies and manipulation using more lies or manipulation. Be honest, apologise, and leave it there.

  146. United says:

    @Zelh

I was referencing their quality. Only Fletcher, Anderson, Nani and Valencia have the necessary quality to stay at United but Fletcher is in terrible form, Anderson is wildly inconsistent and Valencia was tackled by a thug.

  147. Zelh says:

    the defensive midfield is okay.
what we need is a player who can run the game, shoot from outside the box and still track down every ball in the middle of the park.
and he needs a physical strenght to defend in midfield.

hard to find an available player.

  148. United says:

Scholes and Giggs are legends who deserve to be acclaimed as so. BUT, can we not at least admit that both cannot be relied upon week in week out and can be quite inconsistent. A LOT of people were slagging off scholes at the beginning of the season on this very blog, Giggs is Giggs, sometimes amazing, sometimes with far too many flicks and tricks and little penetration. The rest are squad players at best.

I love how on this site any criticism of the team means you aren’t a United fan.

I’ve been coming on the site for over a year regularly and am at pretty much every live blog. I really don’t need your approval to be a fan.

  149. Murfsyeed says:

I think Gibson will be the replacement for Scholes, People said that he’s been dissapointing but I think he just need more Games.

During the match with Wigan, he played a beautiful pass to set Berbatov free.

  150. willierednut says:

United – I was wondering what all the fuss was about, until I watched him. Played Bastian the beast off the park, which is no mean feat. Scored a cracker as well.

  151. Zelh says:

United – Ando was out for 6 months and didn’t play a lot of games. what he needs is a consistent run of games. lots of games.

Park no United-quality? he killed arsenal again. scored a lot of goals. one of the best squadplayer we have.

  152. United says:

    @Zelh

I think part of the problem is that there are few *complete midfielders around in the game anymore. Everyone specialises, a DM, an AM a deep lying playmaker etc. We need someone who can do it all and the only one who really fits the bill right now is Sahin, but yes he would be terribly expensive. Maybe giving Cleverley a chance would work, maybe there is another solution.

But, we aren’t going to really control an away game with Giggs, Scholes and Gibson playing. I know its unpopular to say but its true. New blood is needed.

  153. wakey says:

    @United

Are England a premier league side? Do they play like a Premier league side?

Both answers are no. There is a pace and level of pressure in English league football thats fairly Unique and is a world away from Spanish or International football.

As for right players. How do you know a player is right? Do you not think SAF has alot more insight into the squad that you do and has factors to consider about the squad that you aren’t considering. Even someone whose management experiance isn’t any more than playing Football Manager knows their is more to building a squad than a set of star names (Or just look at Real or City)

And what do you think your supposed no bid’s in the summer tell us? Are you trying to claim we have no money? If so I would just like to point out 1) Hernandex 2) Smalling 3) Bebe 4) The bid we had accepted for Villa that MATCHED Barca’s 5) The chase of Ozil, Fulham after all confirmed Fergie and Werder had a meeting after the Werder/Fulham friendly. I suspect Werder reinterated that Ozils preference was Real

As for the spurs midfield, you mean VdV who looks ordinary unless the teams built around him with him effectivily playing as a second striker. Also a VdV who spends more time injured, if you are going to include him then why not include Hargreves and valencia in our

  154. United says:

Park is a great squad player, I’ll admit that. Ando showed great form when he started at United, then faded and got injured and is now getting back to fitness, but he isn’t at his best yet. Sadly he might go the way of Possebon who was one of my favourite players and a HUGE talent before he got injured at Boro.

  155. Zelh says:

Everyone is saying that we need new blood in midfield, but it’s a different thing to slag off the whole midfield.
Imo Fletcher had a terrific first half against the sniper ashley cole.

there are just a handfull of these players.
Schweinsteiger – too expensive. And I don’t think he will leave bayern
Sahin – great season but he has to prove that he is capable of doing it year in year out.
Capoue – great talent from france, but didn’t prove himself yet.
Defour – has all what it needs to take our midfield to the next level. With 24 years has already experience.

  156. United says:

Never watched Defour or Capoue so can’t really say. Creativity is whats lacking, I still think Kagawa would be a great addition and Honda has played in the middle for Japan a lot. Before this season I would have said Arteta but he is doing quite terribly now, Goetze is also fantastic but will cost a lot. There are many players out there that we can see + who knows how many that the club scouts can see that we cant.

  157. smartalex says:

You don’t need anyones approval to be a fan. You also chose to be a cunt, never got anyones approval for that. Criticising is one thing, calling Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, Ji-Sung Park, Darren Gibson, Anderson and Paul Scholes ” Weak, insipid, devoid of inspiration and crying out for rejuvenation.” is another. The more you write, the more of a cunt you are. You think you have the right as a fan to lie about United players. You don’t have any right. Mention or analyse aspects of our play. Do not broadly attack our team , manager and club while claiming to be a United fan.

You are a cunt. Every time you come on here you think you have the right to say a lot of nasty lies.

That gives me the right to call you a CUNT!

  158. smartalex says:

None of your points carry any weight because you are a cunt!

  159. smartalex says:

    Fuck off you stupid cunt.

  160. Zelh says:

    Goetze is a winger.
And like I said, what we need is a playmaker who can also defend.
that’s why i didn’t mention the likes of özil and so on.
I really don’t want to see the likes of Honda, Kagawa and Özil in a 442.

The DM would be always on his own.

  161. United says:

They’s telling nasty lies they are! Wow, its like talking to Gollum from Lord of the Rings! Silly, silly man

  162. smartalex says:

You claim to be a knowledgeable fan, then you lie about our players. You are a cunt.

  163. smartalex says:

You call yourself ‘United’, but you try to divide us from our entire midfield, including our idols. You are a cunt.

  164. United says:

    @Zelh

Maybe a move away from 442? Its not like it cant work. Chelsea won 3 titles and dont play it, Arsenal won 3 and dont play it either. We play used to play a variant of a 451/4321 in Europe and it has worked. No reason it cant be the permanent formation.

  165. smartalex says:

So typical, trying to deflect with stupid comparisons to Lord of the Rings.

Apologise, and consider us when you post in future; or continue to be a cunt.

  166. smartalex says:

Your ideas are not relevant to United fans, because you call Ryan Giggs ‘weak, insipid, and devoid of inspiration’

    You are a cunt.

Or not? You chose to remain a cunt, so you must be a CUNT!

  167. Zelh says:

I we would switch to 451 we have to sort out lots of strikers.
It’s like commiting a sacrilege to let players like berbatov or rooney on the bench.
then there’s still Hernandez as a super sub.

With such a quality we should play 442.

  168. willierednut says:

Now now lads, no need for swinging handbags. Sir Alex is contesting the FA charge. Don’t know if he can win this one.

  169. Rai says:

Scholes for me is still the best CM in the country (i admit I’ve got a soft spot but I really think he’s got at least another year in him)

  170. United says:

    @Zelh

Know where you are coming from, but for the team I think it would be beneficial. We have fantastic fullbacks to provide width and support, it could be fantastic with the right players. Players shouldn’t dictate everything.

  171. willierednut says:

Stop taking about cunts, I’m getting frisky. :D

  172. smartalex says:

    No problem! Anyone prefer cock?

    Just kidding!

If a person wearing a big sign saying ‘Animal Lover’ walks over to you in the park and kicks your dog repeatedly; he is a ****!

  173. Zelh says:

    United – Germany ;)

Imo we should settle between 442 and 433.
Maybe I have a soft spot for berbatov, but I can’t stand seeing him on the bench in the big games.

I think the only thing our squad needs is a little bit of new blood in midfield.
If ferguson isn’t going for any player cause there’s not the right player, he should gamble with the likes of cleverley, pogba, james etc.

  174. Costas says:

willie is about to whip it out, lol.

Fergie will appeal the charge. That means the decision will be reached later. Sadly, it also means that he will get a bigger touchline ban. Who are we kidding here?

  175. United says:

433 is definitely a way forward. And I have a man-crush on Berba too, haha

  176. willierednut says:

If the article last was right, then Fergie is going against the clubs wishes. If that article was true of course.

  177. Zelh says:

I heard that it would be 3 games and 5 if he charges against it.

  178. smartalex says:

Your name works for you, as anyone who refers to you appears to be referring to United.

Be a man and apologise unreservedly. Or be a CUNT.

    Sorry willierednut.

That fucking twat calls Ryan and Paul terrible names. Chatting to a CUNT empowers that anti-United cunt.

  179. wakey says:

    @Zelh

Is that including the 2 game ban that from before that will come into play if found guilty?

If not then its looking like a 7 Game ban for him then

  180. smartalex says:

Piece of shit laughs and jokes around like he hasn’t been slagging off our club.

  181. Zelh says:

wakey – dunno, I think they would extend it to 5 games.

  182. Costas says:

    @wakey

I think the 2 game ban is part of that. He definitely won’t get anything more than 5. 2 games is your standard punishment. Add the two that have been hanging over his head since the Wiley comments and that’s 4. And I take it that they will add one more game because his appeal delayed the procedure.

  183. willierednut says:

At least he’ll be there on Sunday. I hope at full time, when we’ve won 3 1, Fergie gives Dalglish a Scottish kiss.

  184. willierednut says:

After the Wiley comments? I never said anything Costas. ;)

  185. Costas says:

Lol. And he will be there against Arsenal next Saturday too I presume. However, it’s quite likely that he will be banned for one (or both) of the games against Arsenal and Chelsea coming up in April.

    @smartalex

Hi mate. I know how you are feeling, but it’s better to chill. It’s not worth getting fed up about.

  186. Costas says:

That’s another pathetic excuse for you to use a smiley Willie, lol.

    Can you do this?

  187. MG says:

    smartalex

You’d be Gandalf if this were Lord Of the Rings

    ;)

  188. smartalex says:

Thanks for the sensible attempts to calm me down, willierednut, Costas and MG.

They are effective. I chose to ignore my angry frustration.

I am sorry for upsetting anyone with my selfish rants.

  189. willierednut says:

    Star Wars > LOTR

  190. wayne says:

doesn’t have to mean any of the above maybe sir alex sees him as a good squad player end of story

  191. dannysoya says:

i am happy for his extension however i think it’s too long. till he’s 34? COME ON!!! also i believe hargo should still stay. just let him recover and don’t sell him PLEASE. he is a very good midfielder. we saw what he could do in our double winning season. also if we don’t bring in a midfielder this summer i won’t be too happy.

  192. smartalex says:

OK, so Sir Alex is contesting the charge. Good.

Accepting guilt would get us nowhere. It may save an extended ban, but falling for that only encourages the FA to punish unfairly in future. Stand up to them. I believe we will win. Even if we don’t, it is better that they expect us to contest the next time they are adjudicating.

  193. devil without a cause says:

utd run in from bottom to top–

    blackpool
    rovers

and i heard arse have an easy run in than us………. god bless this london media……….

P.S. its liverpool vs man city on my bday…….. so i m just bound to be happy for one reason or the other……….. :-P

  194. willierednut says:

smartalex – It happens to us all mate.

  195. King Eric says:

United – Do me a favour. Huddlestone, Khediara? Ozil who looks like a fucking aids victim and cannot get thru 70 minutes? Modric who is decent but not sure for United.

Anyway glad Fergie has appealed the fucking ban.

  196. King Eric says:

Henderson wgho has been fucking woeful since xmas? Diarra? Oh christ. Not ONE of these is a better option than Carrick.

  197. MG says:

    United

Carrick is no Xavi Iniesta – whatever

Carrick is Carrick a brilliant player who has lost his way for a while – every player loses their way for a while – Rooney has lost his way for a while is he now to be considered shit?

The only significant part of your comments are that yes we cannot rely on Scholes and Giggs week in week out – but having a go at Giggs because sometimes he’s amazing and sometimes he’s off is plain stupid

Giggs is the outstanding and most decorated player in europe and in world football – every player can have bad days and he has had his fair share of them – I do not recognise the Ryan Giggs that you are talking about though and that is unfair.

You say that the rest of the midfield is squad players at best

Seriously that’s a shame – and you know that – since the game itself is based on squad integration and rotation even the best players in the world cannot be asked to play game in and game out so why have a go at your own players?

Barca spent nearly 20 million on Mascherano – at best he is a bit player let alone squad player for Barca – is that fair?

Real Madrid soaked up so many midfielders can you tell me who is first team and who is squad?

Can you tell me the first team mids at city or the squad team?

Do yourself a favour and think before you speak – every player is important as the next and ours are just that too – We have missed players like Ji and Valencia – Owen Hargreaves – yet they are all part of a squad doing their job as the manager sees fit

And that is the point it’s how the manager sees fit in order to play whom when and where

It’s up to him who he picks to sign and who he picks to let go of

It is his team first we are mere followers of that team – if you believe that you are something else then so help you God as the saying go.

Be fair in the way you assess things – it is still your team and they are still wearing the shirt – their is no point knocking them – just get behind them and give them 20% extra if they are falling down somewhere – isn’t that the point of a fan/supporter?

  198. Costas says:

    @smartalex

Yeah pal, it happens to the best of us. I know I will rant again someday. I just thought I’d play peacemaker this time. :D

  199. mattbw7 says:

So I guess we have the usual round of Carrick and Fletcher slaggereroffers on here today.

Carrick a midfield passer playing as defenensive midfielder (Benitez anyone)
Fletcher out of form but the guy has shown in seasons past that he has what it takes so I expect he will get back to that level of performance again.

I guess like a few on here I keep saying the issue isnt to get a creative midfielder its to get a muscular ball winner with a bit of skill thrown in, YAYA anyone!!! he was our player till Fergie had to trot out the no value in the transfer market bollocks.

If we could only buy one player it would be that type though if we had squillions I’d obviously ask Sant to bring me a GK and a proper left sided midfielder.

  200. Saad says:

    @devil without a cause

It would help if we knew which of the Arse games are Home and Away. A Blackpool game away would be quite tough for Arse. But my money is on Spurs to bury the suckers at WHL!

  201. King Eric says:

United – I will creid you with some sense you actually DIDN’T mention Huddelstone. My apologies.

  202. King Eric says:

Actually what is this Bastian the beast nonsense? He is ok. A winger till 18 months ago and now in centre mid. The one player that would make the difference is Sneijder.

  203. MG says:

    willierednut

Sorry mate Lucas is a fucking twit

    LOTR > Star Wars

    ;)

    Though I can’t quote LOTR :)

  204. Samuel - united WE stand says:

i reckon sir alex will see a couple of new midfield players as a priority this summer, creative players preferably, i just feel carrick signing a new deal is a sign of the manager trying to keep the experience in the team whilst in his own way rewarding there loyalty, saying that though i still feel he needs to refreshing the team, starting with midfield, you need new quality players to keep on improving and sir alex knows that.

  205. King Eric says:

United – Not picking on you mate but your posts are becoming stranger. We have just signed Ando to a huge deal so he won’t be going. Fergie actually said a while ago Anderson was the man to replace Paul.

  206. Saad says:

I still say that our best hope lies with a certain Ravel Morrison. If he can sort out his personal life and focus on his football, he can be that in-house megastar we’ve been waiting for since age started catching up with Scholesy.

Meanwhile, let’s go for a proven commodity and get Wesley Sneijder and get 3-5 good years out of him until Morrison fully develops. Modric wouldn’t be a bad 2nd choice given that he is proven in the Premier League.

  207. Zelh says:

Saad – Blackpool is an away game for Arse.

mattbw7 – I agree that we need a ballwinner in midfield, but I would prefer if he’d have a lot of football intelligence to read the game and to find the gap for the easy pass through the defenders.
Imo Anderson can fit that role, but he has to stay injury-free.

  208. King Eric says:

Whats with this “creative” thing? We create shit loads of chances but our strikers at times have been poor in front of goal. Darren Fletcher on form controls games.

  209. willierednut says:

King Eric – You coming round to my way of thinking mate? Modric Is decent? You’re getting there, slowly but surely. Here that cunt Dalglish? They’ve still got 5 European cups, so they’re the bigger club! Fucking Durham on his soapbox again, biggin up the dippers. We’re getting wrote off for the weekend, lets fucking respond in kind, with a big performance.

  210. mattbw7 says:

MG SAID Be fair in the way you assess things – it is still your team and they are still wearing the shirt – their is no point knocking them – just get behind them and give them 20% extra if they are falling down somewhere – isn’t that the point of a fan/supporter?

It used tobe that way didnt it (when I was a lad) I remember when we played Atletico Madrid in defence of ECWC we got dicked I think 3-0 over there and the atmosphere at OT for 2nd leg was fucking awsome, Hughes scored and the pace exploded I recall Bernt Schuster scored a great free kick (twat) and that was that but never a moan from the fans, cheered till the end, I remember much the same when Scott Gemmill (who? EXCACTLY) scored two help forest beat us 2-1 and put another nail in a title challenge, we just got on with it and we had Phelan and Webb in the team then ffs

  211. King Eric says:

Saad – Exactly mate. Won’t be for a season or two but fuck me the lad is good as are Pogba and Tunni. As I said earlier Tunnicliffe will be the new Roy Keane.

  212. MG says:

    mattbw7

Mate we would never paid Yaya Toure 200,000 plus – sorry no chance in hell

He maybe a good player but he’s not that good to be paid that much

SAF is right – City overpay for everyone and then load them up with stupid wages that no one can match – well unless you are Madrid. That’s the whole point of no value in the market for me – and I think that because those teams are overburdened with players in such positions it makes our job easier to find the players – only getting them is another matter because they have to want to come

People talk about Ozil – he never wanted to come – VDV – we would never have been given permission by Madrid to sign him for 8 million if we wanted him – just some points

    Just my opinion

  213. King Eric says:

Willie – ha ha. I have always thought Modric is “decent” but a Spurs player.

  214. willierednut says:

MG – No no no no no no no. Star Wars > LOTR. :D

  215. mattbw7 says:

Dont worry about Durham I do quite like him, even when he’s trying to wind us up for the sake of his show, Gough however what a prick, he’s one of those northerners that gets the rest of us labelled Northern Twats.

  216. King Eric says:

willie – Whats that ginger cunt Durham saying? Havent listened to those clowns since Monday. Everyone saying Carrol will rape Chris and Wes . Will he fuck. How about the dippers defence? We NEED to win that game Sunday. Fergie has a good record against Kenny. Fucking banging on about their history. Oh do fuck off it got boring in 1990.

  217. Costas says:

    It goes like this:

Original Star Wars trilogy > LOTR > Latest Star Wars trilogy.

    Jar Jar Bings ffs.

  218. mattbw7 says:

MG he’s only paid 200k a week to get him to City, dont forget Dwight Yorke got higher wages at Blackburn than he did at UTD

  219. Zelh says:

Modric definitily is decent and has proven himself in england.
the only player I would want from Spurs.

King Eric – Dunno if you have seen the same as I have. After Paul Scholes was subbed off against Chelsea nothing worked since then.

  220. musca says:

whats this big fuss about midfielder thingy. i dont remember the last time utd ever bought a star midfield player. and honestly, SAF is not so good in buying players for the midfield area. but he’s good in growing players. just look at beckham, giggs, scholes. so why dont we just count on the youth that we have? lets not waste their talent for another star midfield. :)

  221. Saad says:

Shitty have taken all sense out football economics since they were bought by the Abu Dhabi Group. Any team who pays Wayne Bridge and Adebayor over 100grand/month and then doesn’t play them simply have no such as thing brain matter in their skulls.

  223. Rai says:

Durham is ok, it’s Irani who I fuckin hate

  224. willierednut says:

King Eric – Pepe Reina is the equal of VDS. Carroll will give Smalling and Wes big problems. Johnson better than Sheasy. We’re in Liverpool’s shadow apparently. Same shite, as always with him. Heard a whisper, Rio might figure? Hope so, anyway.

  225. mattbw7 says:

fuck off Zelh, Bale aint half bad either

  226. mattbw7 says:

Durhams got a hard on for Carroll, he must like ladyboys, got to to give it to Durham he was the only one defending Rooney over the elbow whne Goughy was virtually calling him the level of a child rapist!!!

  227. smartalex says:

New contracts endorse players contributions, so we can surely expect confident displays from our recent extenders. Good form will follow close behind. United seem to have impeccable timing in this regard. For that, we have Fergie’s autonomous and absolute status to thank.

  228. wayne says:

spurs lost money last year under ‘arry spent a shitload if they don’t make the top 4 players will be available just a matter if utd or any other club want to spend the money

  229. Zelh says:

mattbw7 – it’s just my opinion. Don’t understand all this hype around him. Of course he’s a great player, but to put Tony V on the bench for him?

  230. MG says:

I wholeheartedly agree with some of our youngsters

If Ravel can be taught about the principles of United he will become massive – he himself is letting himself down

Pogba and Tunncliffe seem to be the most outstanding midfielders we have coming

And I really want to see Cleverly and Danny back – Danny will be absolutely huge

Of course we still need the chequebook open – let’s see what happens…

  231. Zelh says:

    It’s Ravel’s last chance anyway.
If he does any shit he’ll be out of the club and out of his normal life for a year.

  232. Saad says:

Blackpool, Pool (H), Spurs, Bolton, United (H) and Stoke — these are all games Arse can realistically drop points.

Pool, Arse and Chelski — the question marks for United.

  233. MG says:

Listen willierednut/Costas I shall not be turned to the darkside :)

    LOTR > Star Wars 5 4 > Star Wars 6 > Star Wars 1 2 3

    :)

  234. willierednut says:

Matt – Rooney’s English, that’s why Durham stuck up for him. A Liverpool fan phoned in the other week and said he was a closet Liverpool fan. He started laughing and didn’t deny It. Look at the way he likes Carra’s ass now, after calling him a bottler, a few years ago?

  235. wayne says:

with gunners injuries sunderland won’t be a pushover can easily see them taking points tomorrow

  236. Costas says:

    @MG

Lol, I will always prefer the first 3 Star Wars movies because they didn’t have the CGI budget LOTR had. Plus, they gave us one of the greates lines ever. “I am your daddy”. It’s something we tell City fans all the time. ;)

  237. Saad says:

Sunderland have not been the same since Welbeck got injured.

I have to say, the kid is not a fast healer. He got injured in early Jan and hamstring injuries usually take about a month to fully heal. He’s been gone two months now and not expected back until next week.

  238. Costas says:

    @wayne

Hi mate. I hope so, although Sunderland have their injuries too. Onuoha among them. I hear that Danny W might return though.

  239. mattbw7 says:

    Zelh says:
mattbw7 – it’s just my opinion. Don’t understand all this hype around him. Of course he’s a great player, but to put Tony V on the bench for him?

Did I say that, i thought I said Bale was a good player nothing more and you contradict yourself calling him a great player and not understanding the hype surrounding him. The facts are these, he is quick, left footed, can cross and finish, now forgive me I like to Tony V buts he’s been pretty inconsistent

  240. MG says:

    Costas

    “City

    We are your father’s”

(cue screams uncontrollable emotions and lot’s of talk about the future :)

  241. wayne says:

@mattbw7 hi mate don’t see how you can call Tony V inconsistent, his first year with utd was top class this year he’s been injured?

  242. Zelh says:

mattbw7 – and so was Bale. Where was he against Rafael at Old Trafford? He was taken out of the game by some defenders.

maybe tony V’s game is mor one-dimensional, but looks more effective to me.
He had a great first season and saved us lot’s of points with his deadly crosses.
can’t see where he was inconsistent.

  243. wayne says:

@Costas hi yeah they’ve lost 4 in a row so injuries are affecting them right now but gunners are missing key players so i’m hoping

  244. wakey says:

    @mattbw7

Sure City paid a little more than we would perhaps had to but he had the added draw at City of his Brother being at the club.

By all accounts his Agent spent last season shopping him about all of europe, the problem was he wanted a take home greater than he was on at Barca and as such were asking around 180-190k a week after tax if the stories are to believed. United were almost certainly one of those approached hence the rumours about us signing him last season.

Some players is all about joining a certain club and the take a pay cut but these days its about getting the most money as alot of players are mecenaries, Yaya is one of those and we weren’t going to get his wages cheap

  245. smartalex says:

Wes Brown has been missing in inaction this season. It is not clear why this has been the case. Stories, rumours, much of it fact, no doubt; but no clarity or understanding. This has led to much conjecture, and even complaint.

If Wes has complained, I haven’t heard it. He appears to have been the model local player who is also a ‘lifer’. Compare this with reports from Mancini of Ballotelli ignoring him. Those who would import these mercenaries ad hoc, and in their number, should consider the whole package.

Now that Wes has weathered his winter of discontent, he emerges as our spring sun, to revitalize our season. Shine Wes Brown, Shine!

  246. StatesideAussie says:

MG: I’m with you … LOTR > greater than Star Wars, and I know this for a FACT, because I have never watched any of the Star Wars movies. And that proves the point beyond any argument, because if they were any good, I would have watched them, wouldn’t I? Stands to reason, really. Just like a lot of the arguments some people make on here. Lol

  247. smartalex says:

    Spring son, spring!

  248. StatesideAussie says:

…and, but, also, furthermore: “You have forgotten the face of your father” (Stephen King, The Dark Tower series — now that would be a helluva series of movies!)

  249. MG says:

I have StatesideAussie on my side!

This is how you have a revolution against Star Wars

Fear leads to hate hate leads to suffering suffering leads to the dark side

    ;)

  250. willierednut says:

Come on now lads, stay on topic. :D

  251. Costas says:

    @MG

It’s also the line Darth Scholes uses every time he hacks down Barry, Milner and co. IN this particular trilogy, the Dark Side will prevail. ;)

  252. MG says:

    Costas

The only time the dark side counts is when we put Master Scholes into the equation

    ;)

  253. Costas says:

    R2-D2 and C3PO > Dwarves.

    Luke Skywalker > Aragon

    Han Solo > Legolas

    Darth Vader > Saruman

Emperor Palpantine > An eye at the top of a tower, lol. :)

  254. willierednut says:

Go on Costas, you tell them two. Star Wars rules!!!!

  255. Russell Y says:

We are broke, let’s face it ! There will be no big name signings come this summer… Hence, the anti Glazer campaign must go on…

  256. MG says:

Yes willierednut lets stay on topic

Hayley McQueen looks so beautiful today on SSN – oh so dashing – gorgeous – the make up – the lipstick the dress

    lol ;)

  257. Costas says:

    @MG

Actually, when Scholesy is around, there’s only one side. The Dark Side. He is wiped out everyone else, lol.

  258. mattbw7 says:

Sorry Wayne it wasnt top class in his first year it was ok, if it was first class he would have finished that sitter against blackburn

  259. MG says:

Sorry did i go off topic again ;)

  260. Costas says:

    @willie

I actually think that Stateside was making a different point. You know, “I may not have seen VDV play a lot, but I am sure he can do better than Carrick for us”.

Anyway, as much as I like Star Wars, I liked LOTR too. Really put Lucas’ second trilogy to shame.

  261. Costas says:

Speaking of Star Wars, and staying on topic, Natalie Portman. ;)

  262. MG says:

    Costas

Middle Earth > Star Wars Universe

Cate Blanchett as Princess > Natalie Portman as Queen

    Gandalf > Master Yoda

Liv Tyler > Jar Jar Binks ;)

You were saying my fellow friend :)

  263. YorYor says:

Buy players all you want in FM, but stop it, just stop it, if you think you know better than SAF. You might get 1 or 2 right, but SAF would get the other 9 or 8.
I’ve learned a long time ago to put my faith in what SAF does. Teddy Sheringham, really? He scores the all important equaliser. Solskjaer who, and for less than a mill quid? Gotta be joking.
He lets players go if they didn’t fit the bill, like Djemba, Miller, Bellion, Manucho. Tosic appears to be doing well, but something must have been lacking for SAF to let him go (I still suspect those two were done to keep Vidic around).
Whoever it is, if you’re that good a FM manager, show proof that you’ve brought a team from Blue Square North/South up to the PL in 5 years = promotion every season, since it’s obviously that easy to sign players who are good and just make them gel, while ensuring you remain within your wage budget. If so, maybe you can apply to be a manager of FC United and challenge the real United for the title then.

  264. wayne says:

@mattbw7 well i give tony v alot credit for rooney’s best season he was signed to create goals which he did big time and there is no doubt the team has missed him this year.so for me he was one of utds top performers last year, you don’t see it that way fair enough.

  265. MG says:

I do agree Natalie Portman as a woman is unquestionably beautiful

But as Queen Amidala she is a wooden stick to the wooden plank of Anakin Skywalker :)

  266. mattbw7 says:

zehl fuck off i just said Bale was a good player, you made the tony v comparison, Bale scored a hat rick in the san siro, we did fuck all im marsielles since does any player go through a season playing in tip top form

  267. smartalex says:

Some decry Darren Fletcher, and yet recently he was considered by most to be our indispensable big game player. He brings so much more than his excellence and diligence. He epitomises the success of United, thereby attracting the best young players and giving them belief that United will enable their future. He continues from Ryan, Paul, and others, in this way.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Darren has been at the club since he was fifteen years old. I am extremely proud that he came through the ranks of our youth academy. I am delighted Darren has signed a new contract, he has developed into a top-class midfielder.”

Darren Fletcher said: “I take great pride in playing for Manchester United, I have won many trophies in my years playing here and I am looking forward to winning many more in the seasons to come. I would like to thank everyone at the club.”

  268. Chrisw says:

Looks like the Glazers still don’t want to spend money. Remember how quickly we signed up Anderson to a new deal the moment he showed some form? I mean I love Ando but really he should have had to prove himself a bit more first. It seems we are desperate not to have to buy anyone new. I’ve never really seen the point of Carrick.

It’s true we have lots of money in the bank but that doesn’t mean we are being allowed to spend it. The Glazers are quite happy to park the money in United’s bank account as long as it stays there. They will steal it at their leisure.

  269. StatesideAussie says:

Costas … ah, exactly. nailed it one!

  270. Costas says:

    @MG

Come on mate. That’s like comparing Giggs with Bale, lol. We are talking about the original trilogy of Star Wars. The other one shall be renamed “What the hell was Lucas thinking”. :)

  271. wayne says:

ok lads lucas is the biggest con man ever and star wars is a total rip off of kurosawa’s hidden fortress.

  272. Rai says:

Sorry guys again off topic – has anyone seen Macheda’s performances lately?

  273. mattbw7 says:

nah wayne its not that it you say his 1st season was top class then he had to finish that chance at blackburn,

  274. wayne says:

please, please, please lets not get on the utd are broke bollocks again, utd are not fucking broke

  275. MG says:

    Costas no chance!

Even the original trilogy is flawed because the last chapter is well rubbish so technically cannot be viewed as a trilogy

Oh boy I can’t believe with the week we had we were going to be having this discussion – sounds like a Tarantino movie lol

Costas I refer you to wayne’s comment at 17.24

To further wayne’s point Lucas is remastering Star Wars in 3d with the Phantom menace coming out first

Ouch that bloody hurts lol :)

  276. wayne says:

@mattbw7 every player misses chances mate saying his season wasn’t top class because of that is pretty harsh imo

  277. Dave Malaysia says:

@wakey: Totally and completely disagree with yr comment. At most it was a yellow. Never a red,a player blocks u expect the things i mention in the earlier post to happen.

And no the FA has fucking right to go back and ban him .The rules state if the ref is done with it and makes no reference to it ,its done. Of course the fucking FA is never consistent and selective in what they do.

  278. MG says:

    Costas

With the other one Lucas made the mistake of taking care of script and film by himself

I said in a forum or writers at a time that Spielberg should have been chosen to do the first one – and it would have made sense but Lucas is a control freak and because of that has screwed up his own legacy

Yes I know years later Spielberg did the same with Indiana Jones – ah well

    ;)

  279. Kings says:

Durham’s a cunt. Kenny Dalglish is a cunt and his daughter is a fat ugly cunt who has inherited his big fat arse. Carroll is shit, Newcastle said that they valued him at £1m 12 months ago. A mate of mine who is also a United fan said we should have brought Carroll in the January window, didn’t dignify that with a response as I thought it was laughable – I think my silence on that matter spoke volumes.

  280. mattbw7 says:

Sorry Wayne missing a sitter when we need it isnt what a player having a top class season does, Tony V had a very good debut season but I would argue against labelling it top class, that doesn’t mean I dont rate him its just me not getting carried away. Look at the slagging berbatov got at that game and after and yet nothing for Tony V

  281. MG says:

    Kings

Say as you feel fella keep the kids out of it – we are better than that.

  282. smartalex says:

The boss responded to the FA today, four days ahead of the deadline.

    What’s right, is right.

  283. StatesideAussie says:

Some questions for those who think the only reason SAF isn’t out in the market buying who-the-fuck-ever. Let’s imagine, just for a moment, that the Qatari thing happens, or that Bill Gates suddenly decides that sticking it to Shitty or The Virus is a worthier cause than stamping out that *other* virus polio, or that Warren Buffet, in his dotage, decides to corner the football market (by the way, a fine old LOTR word that, “dotage”. You won’t find fine language like that in Star Wars :-) )… anyway, imagine SAF now has unlimited funds at his disposal. Here are the questions:

    1. Would you expect him to undertake an immediate and wholesale clean-out of our squad?
    2. Would you be pissed off if he didn’t?
    3. Would you think, maybe, that his failure to do so, given unlimited funds, means he ought to be replaced?
    4. Or would you be content to let him do what he’s already doing, which is to build our next great team from the ground up, by taking the best youngsters he can find and molding them into the players he actually wants, supplemented by the “old heads” as he brings them through the ranks?

  284. willierednut says:

Costas – I know his point, just giving you a bit of support lol. Fuck me Kings? Say what you really mean mate! lol.

  285. willierednut says:

Seriously now lads, keep it on topic, or smartalex will lose his rag again! ;)

  286. MG says:

    What was the topic again?

    ;)

  288. Dave Malaysia says:

    Do U trust Ferguson?

If u do ,then u know he wud not have signed these players on without reason.

When Ferguson persisted with Fletcher ,the abuse towards him and the boss was terrible.

Then it was wow,big game player,we need him and all that.

    Now he is shit again.

The guy has not been playing well, he is carrying a ankle ijury ,that by the looks of it he probaly needs surgery at some point. He is starting to shine again.

Someone even went as far ro say he wud not have made a difference in ROME,how the fuck do u know that? He might have been the difference, thats the point.

  289. StatesideAussie says:

MG … I had no doubt about your answers mate! Cheers.

  290. MG says:

Wenger has said that Toure was taking his wifes diet pills in order to lose weight

Now Toure left Arsenal about 2 years ago – correct me – so how does Wenger know that then?

Oh dear – oh dear – Has wenger admitted to an affair lol ;)

  291. wayne says:

well regardless of what happens in the future signing players to new contracts is a good thing keeps everyone content and happy

  292. MG says:

    StatesideAussie

Well I like to please :)

  293. smartalex says:

  294. MG says:

For the time being I answered first so I’m on top – alphabetically anyway lol ;)

  295. willierednut says:

MG – I forget mate lol. Something about, something else?

  296. Dave Malaysia says:

@MG: u lucky bastard! No chance of seeing Hayley over here, damm damm damm!

and then u have smartalex talking about cunts, damm damm damm!

Ok got my torchlight and holding my pipi ,wheres the darkside?

    ;) ;) ;)

  297. smartalex says:

    MG

I copied and pasted your succinct reply, so you may deservedly lead, as long as I don’t have to bring up the rear!

  298. MG says:

    willierednut

it was something about something something ;)

    Dave Malaysia

I think I’ll have to put a collection of Hayley pics together in a scrapbook and send it over lol :)

    smartalex

    Agreed!

  299. Ryandunny says:

With Vidic, Evra, Rooney, Carrick, Fletch, Anderson, Giggs, and rumors of Berbatov signing…I think its just Fergie keeping the nucleus of the side together. No doubt there will be two or three in with a couple of youngsters stepping up and getting more game time (Morrison, Pogba for example) and a few loanees coming back (Macheda, Tom and Danny) to coincide with a few leaving.

That way we keep the unbelievable winning mentality we have at the moment and get a few fresh faces in too.

    SAF always a step ahead.

  300. smartalex says:

Shouldn’t play with tweezers in the dark, Dave!

  301. Dave Malaysia says:

    @ smartalex: its a wrench,wanna try? ;)

  302. smartalex says:

    Monkey wrench Dave?

A good sense of humour is yet another good reason to hate the bitters!

  303. Costas says:

    @MG

Well sure, LOTR had a better flow about it, because they shot it all at once. Return of the Jedi came at a time when Lucas was already focusing on Indiana Jones and he didn’t know how to follow up on the first two. But I was still more invested in it.

    Space > Gondor
    Storm Troopers > Orks :)

I agree about the latter 3 movies. Plus, he focused too much on romance. As for Indiana Jones, big fan of that too. Don’t sell Lucas short. He played as much a part in ruining the 4th movie as Spielberg did. It was his idea to include aliens. *Facepalm*

  304. Dave Malaysia says:

    WOW

Have u guys seen this ,the player everyones excited about Eden Hazard has signed a new contract at Lille, till 2015.

    lol.

  305. wakey says:

    @MG

Anyone would be wooden with Lucas’s writing. With the original Trilogy people seemed to ignore the clunky writing and the the wooden acting but its just as bad as the Prequel movies. As Harrison Ford famously said during filming the first movie “You can write this shit, George, but you sure can’t say it!”

    @Chrisw

Again even Andy Green acknowledges there is little point in the money being in the United account unless its there to spend as it will be only gaining 1% interest. They would be better off buying some more of the bonds with it if its not there to be used or even if the Glazers intend to take their allowed money for them to take it and make the money work

    @Dave Malaysia

Take your rose tinted glasses off, you are sounding like Wenger. Its INEXCUSABLE to throw an elbow even if you feel you are about to be blocked. He is lucky the FA’s disaplinary process is so inept

  306. Dave Malaysia says:

    @smartalex,my son,I am yr Father!

  307. StatesideAussie says:

@coastas/MG … LOTR “flows” because is a single story, conceived and written that way from the outset. It was originally published as three books, over the author’s objections. In that sense, it is not really a trilogy, since none of the parts can actually be viewed/read independently of the others. And it was shot/published as three films only because it’s impossible to market a single 12-hour movie (even though that’s the way I always watch it, end-to-end).

  308. smartalex says:

    Dad, please leave Hayley alone!

  309. Dave Malaysia says:

@wakey: regular glasses here. i dont like wenger. Read my comments carefully,I said its a yellow at best ,no excuses.

I watched it and replayed it,if it was malicious ,go ahead and ban him.

But if u watched the same game its clear it was not. Dont know why u taking the high road and so eager to ban the guy.

  310. Dave Malaysia says:

Son,dad wants what dad wants. By the way is she married?

  311. smartalex says:

Okay Father, have her home by sunrise. I like a little action before breakfast.

  312. Dave Malaysia says:

Dont know why Wes has not been playing regularly. This is a big moment for him ,if he plays i hope he does brilliant and helps us win.

Rio is rumoured to be ready, hope so. Evans too.

  313. Dave Malaysia says:

Son we dont share birds, thats just yuck.

  314. Costas says:

    @Stateside

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. I found out about the books after I saw the first film. Jackson couldn’t go wrong in the sense because he had everything layed out for him more or less. But he did excellent in bringing those characters to life.

For his first trilogy, Lucas wrote the movies as he went along. I don’t believe he thought he was going to make 3 of them at first. But he doesn’t have that excuse for his 2nd trilogy. The 3rd movie was great, but he wasted the first 2.

  315. Chrisw says:

@wayne: well regardless of what happens in the future signing players to new contracts is a good thing keeps everyone content and happy

No it’s not, because we have limited squad sizes and there are limits to the wage bill. Re-signing a mediocre player on good wages means you are stuck with him as you can’t force him to leave and no one else will pay him enough to tempt him away.

Right now we are mediocre. We need a big clearout. That is what Ferguson would normally do in these circumstances. But he’s got his hands tied behind his back and has to make do with what he’s got.

  316. smartalex says:

Unfortunately, Hayley is not available in person, so shareware is the option.

  317. willierednut says:

The rip off thing, that happens. Capcom’s Resident Evil, they ripped off, alone in the dark. Star Wars is It’s own entity and It’s success at the box office, speaks for Itself. For the record, I’ve seen LOTR and found It really boring. Personal choice, but there It is. The third one wasn’t as good, as previous ones, but they rarely are, in all honesty. Godfather 3 for example.

  318. StatesideAussie says:

@chrisw … “Right now we are mediocre. We need a big clearout. That is what Ferguson would normally do in these circumstances.” Are you sure about that (“…what Ferguson would normally do in these circumstances.”? When was the last time he had a “big clearout”? And how many times has he done one of those?

  319. wakey says:

    @Dave Malaysia

It was intentional and malicious. And I didn’t want him banned, under the existing rules if he had been it would have been unfair but the rules need changed to cut out the the thugish behaviour and cheating that happens these days.

Refs will make mistakes and if the FA goes back later and deals with things that they may have missed at full speed then they shouldn’t take it as undermining them, instead it should be seen as a way of keeping players honest and not trying to fool the ref

  320. smartalex says:

I expect that Ferguson is doing exactly what “Ferguson would normally do in these circumstances.”

In different circumstances I feel sure that Ferguson will do what “Ferguson would normally do in those circumstances.”

The reasoning that “he’s got his hands tied behind his back and has to make do with what he’s got.” only applies to that specific player, AFTER they sign a new contract.

  321. StatesideAussie says:

    @smartalex … exactly.

  322. willierednut says:

Fuck me! Some header tried to stab Mourinho at a Spanish air port, while he was giving autographs.

  323. wakey says:

    @Costas

WHile the screenplays were written as they went along the stories were written as one initially and split as the story was expanded. He also had alot of the backstory (and supposedly alot of what would be 7, 8 and 9 if he wanted to make them) worked out and documented before the first movie was done.

It was just a case of fleshing it as as the screenplays were developed

  324. Costas says:

Yeah just read it willie. Some morons walking around loose.

  325. smartalex says:

Some club’s supporters make me sick. Imagine signing 2 top CL winning midfielders on the same day.
The 27 year old also has 3 prems, and three Cup winners medals. The 29 year old has just the 3 prems to go with his CL winners medal. And the best part? Free transfers! No competition in the signing also eases wage negotiation. I’d be so happy if we could have been so lucky…

  326. smartalex says:

    @StatesideAussie … exactly.

  327. Mind you car for a quid says:

Ute greatest strength has always been play on the break at pace, we have destroyed many teams like arsenal with such play.

Carrick for me does not keep the ball moving forward, instead stopping play by passing backwards or holding on to long.

Also read Martinez comments re Rooney, he effectively said that Rooney is integral in pushing united forward, therefore they targeted him by blocking his runs.

Scholes is a legend , and has a few years left in him

  328. Costas says:

    @wakey

Really? Didn’t know that. It felt like he was putting the plot together before each episode. Maybe he came up with some plot elements as the trilogy went on (i.e. Luke’s paternity). And I don’t know why, but the 3rd movie felt anticlimatic. Again, as if it was written separately.

LOTR had the advantage in terms of the script because it came directly from a book. I just liked the characters and the story of Star Wars more. Of course, LOTR is miles ahead in terms of special effects, but Star Wars was revolutionary for its time.

  329. Dave Malaysia says:

    @smartalex ru being sarcastic? ;)

  330. Dave Malaysia says:

OK GUYS when the battle commences on Sunday!

All together say this and make sure yr goose pimple come out.

    “AND SO IT BEGINS”

  331. Kings says:

MG – I called a Kelly a fat cunt because she was making an issue of the Wayne Rooney incident. Normally I don’t make comments about peoples kids, but she’s an exception to the rule for me.

  332. smartalex says:

    “AND SO IT BEGINS”

Dave Malaysia, I was being sarcastic at 18:49. My post was marked by using irony in order to convey contempt for those who do not rejoice at the wonderful news that today greets us fans of the great Manchester United.

  333. wakey says:

    @Costas

There are certainly parts of the Original Trilogy that were changed and developed as the screenplays were being written that weren’t in the original treatments. Especially during the writing of empire where key elements of the backstory were changed. Lucas had a 3 picture deal fairly early on and had commissioned 2 books to be written which would have been adapted for parts 2 and 3. When the first screenplay was split into 3 some of these books story points were woven in and Lucas also hired a writer for Empire who brought some unique ideas which changed the back story. Vader being Anakin was one of these elements that came in later

  334. StatesideAussie says:

@wakey and costas … having the backstory and the basic plot and characters worked out in advance, but beneath those outlines, there are still a gazillion details that have to come together to make a story really work, and a lot of time, those details can interfere with the best laid plans. That’s why a lot of writers don’t really bother with outlines, they just start writing. That way, they don’t waste time creating an outline that may end up radically different, or the opposite: forcing the story to fit the preconceived outline. Take it from me: I’ve tried both methods and failed at both lol!

  335. willierednut says:

Fucking writers guild in here now. :D

  336. StatesideAussie says:

willie, yeah, you’re right. or, in my case, a wannabe writer’s guild hahaha… ok, back to the football…

  337. Costas says:

    @wakey, Stateside

Thanks for the input guys. I have to say that if I find one flaw in the writing for the 1st trilogy was that the 3rd one felt flat. It’s obvious to me that Lucas was starting to shift his focus to Indiana Jones. I think there was a plan to kill off Han, but the idea was shot down and that didn’t make for a dramatic movie, that’s for sure,

Stateside, at least you tried mate. I can’t even imagine myself writing more than 10 lines, lol. :)

  338. MG says:

    StatesideAussie

    Fear not I have a plan :)

    willierednut

What’s wrong with having a writer’s guild of ROM – everyone seems to be brilliant at it lol ;)

    Wakey

Lucas the one trick pony became a billionaire out of wooden writing – bloody hell their is hope for me then lol :)

    Costas

It shall be the only thing that separates us the LOTR corner and the Star Wars corner he he he :)

    willirednut

Whatever happens Godfather 3 was an abomination period

Film 2011 ROM style done ;)

  339. wayne says:

@willie i know alot of movies are rip offs just trying to windup the star war geeks.i have a really big back catalog so when movies get made in calgary we get production companys taking out movies looking for scenes if its a western old gunfights etc

  340. wayne says:

@Chrisw so you’re suggesting fletch, carrick, anderson are mediocre and no other club would want them if utd wanted to sell? who exactly are you calling mediocre?doesn’t say much for the rest of the teams in the prem last time i checked utd were top???

  341. MG says:

    Kings

Faie enough mate I never knew the context in that sense they all deserve a rollicking ;)

  342. POBORSKY says:

Have any of you noticed how many goals we concede from the left side of our defence?

Many a time we concede evra just looks around lookin to blame someone else when its down his side to defend?

    wolves second goal
    chelsea first goal
    stoke tuncay goal
    pienaar goal
    bent goal for villa
west brom goal old trafford first goal
    west brom goal morrison
    liverpool penalty
villa pen at villa park evra gone awol
    man city goal
    valencia goal
    BIRMINGHAM GOAL
    fulham davies goal

I am not trying to stir any shit but thats a lot of goals from one side of the defence.

  343. jon0077 says:

Carrick would not get on chelsea’s, arsenal’s, citys, or spurs midfield yet ye deluded fools are delighted he’s our “midfield general” for the next three years. Or youth team players like pogba are gonna look up to his POWERHOUSE performances from the last two fucking seasons and be inspired??? Sure its only a blip ye say,,,,he’ll come good……… He’s what now 30?? And when did he play well last anyone????????????? He’s shite we are broke there’ll be no massive signings carrick getting a new deal all but confirms this get used to it

  344. kel says:

Let me predict the future. I believe we will buy one midfielder. But not a top class but a young ones. If not, we will put cleverly in the midfield and not buy any midfielder because the club is broke!

  345. vILHELM28 says:

People need to pay attention to SAF and read his books. SAF always has aplan and he, most likely, knows who will be comming in and has been knowing for some time.

But, what does it mean? Most like Owen H is done, Gibson is iffy and Scholes has at most 1 year left. SAF is a firm believer of continuity and veteranship thats why SAF will keep Carrick. If Scholes retiers, Carrick will be the oldest and winning teams need these players.

United where never going to bring in more than one midfielder anyway, because Cleverly will be brought back, giving the team Carrick, Park, Anderson, Fletcher, Cleverly and a new guy – more than enough. Expect a winger to come in as well.

  346. Troy says:

    Carrick a new deal?
    For what?
There are way better players out there.
I am convinced we are going to have another summer where Sir Fergie says there are no players that have ‘value’.

  347. welovethereds says:

STATS ARE BULLSHIT. THE ONLY REASON HE KEEPS POSSESSION FOR US IS BECAUSE HE DOESNT PASS FORWARDS. I COULD DO HIS ROLE. HE IS THE MOST ONE DIMENSIONAL, USELESS PLAYER WE HAVE IN OUR TEAM. HE MAKES UP THE NUMBERS AND NOTHING MORE. ANYONE WANT TO ARGUE WITH THAT AND TRY TELLING ME HE IS BETTER AND MORE USEFUL THAN I AM MAKING OUT? COS EVERY UTD FAN KNOWS FULL WELL THAT MICHAEL CARRICK ISNT ANYWHERE NEAR GOOD ENOUGH AND HIS EXPERIENCE IS WHAT FERGUSON HAS SIGNED…. NOT HIS FOOTBALLING ABILITY.

  348. smartalex says:

    Welovethereds

Please don’t shout all the way through your post.

You (and your imaginary friends) specifically ask for an argument. You have no intention of discussing the issue. You have no intention or desire to argue the points. You just want to shout your points at people.

You don’t deserve to have a discussion or an argument. Your points are wrong, and you are a liar. You lie. You say things you know not to be true. You only want to be rude and to shout.

In the real world you behave very differently. You are a terrified insipid little weasel.

Every part of your comment is designed to get a reaction that you can react to.

    You are a wum.

  349. smartalex says:

Welovethereds does not deserve a discussion or argument.

If you must respond to him/them, talk about Welovethereds approach, attitude and hatred.
Do not discuss anything. He did not post a reasonable comment. He lied and insulted to create a platform to shout.

    Do not feed him.

  350. StatesideAussie says:

SmartAlex … I didn’t even read his post. As soon as I see the all-caps, I don’t bother. I don’t read people who shout, because it’s obvious that, like you say, they have no intention of discussing anything. And probably no ability to discuss anything.

  351. Utdforever says:

At least 1 of a possible 3 midfielders will be leaving this summer out of Hargreaves, Gibson and Scholesy so at least 1 new CM will be brought in to replace whoever leaves IMO. Happy to see Fletch sign, feel OK about Carrick’s deal.. thought it might’ve been beneficial for both sides to call it a day and try something new. But in Fergie we trust.

Oh and can people please stop banging on about us missing out on Van Der Vart.. it’s history, move on.

  352. NEED TO FEEL THE LOVE says:

HAVE NOT READY OF THE COMMENTS ALL READY POSTED MY GUT FEELING IS THAT WE HAVE NOT GOT A POT TO PISS IN I REALLY THOUGHT HE WOULD BE GOING AFTER THIS SEASON FAIR ENOUGH THE TEAM HAS NOT PERFORMED THIS SEASON BUT THE ONE THING HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE GOOD AT PASSING HAS NOT BEN UP TO STANDARD

  353. smartalex says:

I’m glad that he left, StatesideAussie. Nothing would be learnt, taught or enjoyed in his presence.

  354. smartalex says:

Rodellega could have done better, come on, 3 minutes extra.

  355. wayne says:

need to feel the love.you do realise having the caps lock on is shouting, you do it all the time

  356. Dirkby says:

Ok, let’s get our facts right here. Carrick may have high stats but put them into perspective. His high success rate of passing is, 99% of the time, a short distance to another Utd player or back to VDS. His interception is usually followed by him giving the ball away. He cost us the Champion’s League Final against Barcelona, by needlessly flapping when no opposing player was near him and giving the ball to Xavi. He also got us knocked out of the Champion’s League last year by being solely responsible for the two Bayern goals – forget Rafael being sent off. And, I have no doubt he’ll prove instrumental if Chelski score against us in the upcoming quarters. I’ll say this and say it with conviction; Carrick is NOT GOOD ENOUGH to play for Utd and this deal simply means that we have no money to buy players and the funds received from any players sold will be harvested by the Glazers. Two years ago, when Ronaldo was sold, the original deal Madrid offered was 20 mil, Robber and Sneider. But no, the Glazers wanted cash. So don’t delude yourself that there’s “120 million” of a transfer kitty there. There ain’t. Need further proof; Darron Gibson’s going to be offered a new contract.
