Manchester United ended 2018 with four straight wins and scoring goals for fun. Caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has changed the fortunes of the Red Devils and just three points now separate them from the top five. Manchester United supporters can use this MyBookie signup offer to stay up to date on the Red Devils’ latest Premier League match odds. Despite sacking manager Jose Mourinho and hiring former striker Solskjaer to steady the ship, Manchester United have plenty of deficiencies in the squad. The good news is stars like Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku are playing better under the new boss. Now with momentum for the first time this term, Manchester United are ready to rise even higher in the second half of the season.
Manchester United are in need of filling in the weak spots in the team. Despite Mourinho spending £360 million on 11 players during his tenure, the Red Devils are in need of upgrades. Transfer money wasn’t well spent and the club still needs defensive upgrades. In fact, Manchester United could use an upgrade at all four defensive positions.
The club continues to be linked with Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar and Napoli stopper Kalidou Koulibaly. Both would cost Manchester United a significant sum. Although Solskjaer has stated he is happy with the team, it should be expected at least one player comes in. Of course, it may not be one of the two centre-backs Manchester United truly want.
Midfielder Andreas Pereira looks likely to leave Old Trafford. He had zero opportunities under Mourinho despite playing well on loan for Valencia in 2017-18. Arsenal, Valencia, and a host of other clubs are tracking Pereira. Mourinho’s exit was one of the Premier League’s biggest sackings and Pereira could get a chance in the future under Solskjaer if he stays.
Will Solskjaer continue winning?
The team looks rejuvenated under Solskjaer. Not only has he recorded 12 points from 12 possible, but Pogba all of a sudden looks like a top-class midfielder. Pogba has seven goals and six assists with many of those coming since Solskjaer was hired.
Solskjaer is playing Pogba behind a lone striker giving him the chance to create and not worry about defensive duties. Unlike Mourinho, the caretaker boss is accentuating Pogba’s strengths and limiting his weaknesses.
Will the winning continue? There will be bumps in the road. Manchester United wisely brought Solskjaer aboard with four winnable games on the fixture list. The manager must now face off against the Premier League’s top clubs and Tottenham away is the first one up. Expect the team to be more competitive, but things to even out a bit.
Solskjaer to get permanent job
Solskjaer is winning games and speaking the company line. He has stated the club won’t make any January signings, which may or may not be true. If past reports that Manchester United don’t want to spend money and only want results with the players they have are true, then Solskjaer could be the right man do oversee the team. He is quiet and won’t make the fuss that Mourinho regularly did when money wasn’t made available.
If the caretaker manager can get further results and finish in the top six, he will most likely be given the permanent job. Despite links to Zinedine Zidane, Antonio Conte, and Laurent Blanc, Manchester United would rather have a club legend at the helm. Moreover, Solskjaer won’t rock the boat.
