Where To Put Your Money For England vs Italy

England v Italy (7.45pm KO, Live on BBC1)

England are 2.88 shots with Paddy Power to win in 90 minutes and book their place in the semi-final.

Italy can be backed at 3 with Boylesports, with the draw a 3.1 shot with Paddy Power.

As far as the stats are concerned the Three Lions have managed just one win from their last nine games against Italy (D2, L6).Their last clash saw them lose a friendly in Leeds 2-1 in March 2002.

They have met at European Championship finals just once before, with Italy winning a group game in 1980 1-0.

Italy also have the better form when it comes to quarter-final encounters in major championships.

They have only been knocked out two of the nine occasions that they have reached this stage – both times on penalty kicks.

That’s much better than England who have lost 7 out of 10 when playing in the last 8.

However on current form there is little to choose between the two sides in what is likely to be a low-scoring affair.

Both base their play around having a strong defence, and in it would be no surprise to see what promises to be a real tactical battle go into extra time.

However England would certainly not want it to go to penalties as they have won just 1 of their 6 previous shoot-outs at major tournaments, when beating Spain in the quarter-finals of Euro 1996 after a 0-0 draw.

What is important is that they get more shots on target in a bid to get that vital opener which could well seal victory.

Roy Hodgson’s men  did not register a single shot on target in the opening 45 minutes against Ukraine, and that is simply not good enough.

Wayne Rooney, who marked his return to action with a goal in that game, has now scored 29 international goals and needs one more to go joint-fifth on England’s list of top scorers.

He is 6.5 shot with bet365 to score first, with Danny Welbeck next best in as far as England are concerned on 10 with the same firm and Boylesports.

Andy Carroll is a 12 chance with Paddy Power, while Steven Gerrard – who has been outstanding so far – is a top priced 15 with bet365 and Betfred.

Defenders Joleon Lescott and John Terry, who are always a threat at set-pieces, can be backed at 31 with Betfred and 34 with bet365 and Paddy Power respectively.

In the hope that England can get the job done in normal time, I am going to suggest backing them to do so 1-0 in the correct score market at 7 with Paddy Power.

  1. Costas says:

As much as it pains me to say, England.

  2. Balls of Steel says:

I find it hilarious that England get shorter odds to win compared to Italy. Maybe bookies over here are forced to lower the odds due to the sheer amount of buffoons who will put money on them so they’ll cover the risk better by reducing them, but I can’t imagine these odds existinging in say Spain or Germany.

  3. Hans says:

Won’t loose any sleep if England go out tonight. In fact, that would probably benefit United!

  4. slim says:

Time for the Ingurland party to end. oooh i wonder what will become of the media darling balotelli if he sticks it to England. FFS will some one give Terry and Stevie me the run around.

  5. Rd54 says:

England out and our players back united to prepare next season, sorry wazza ,Danny ,young ,Phil and england fans ,my most hated two fxxking man stevie me and jt in the same team,if i watch stevie me hold up the trophy,I think I’ll broke my television, sorry for my English.

  6. slim says:

Honestly fella you shouldnt be putting such pictures in my head. Or worse John Terry lifting it too. I can see the chest thumping already

  7. Mash says:

Most of them are already talking about how to face germany in the semis I really hope italy fucks them up.

  8. markynorbs says:

This will be a fascinating game to footballing connoisseur, but to the masses of pre-madonnas out there.
    Boring!!! Will be th cry?
4.30am wake up for this one. Usually it’s a United CL game for this kind of protocol.
    Good luck Ingurland!

  9. samuel - united WE stand says:

England will huff and puff like a 17th century coal train, they’ll run and run and dive into tackles as usual but class rules all in the end. Pirlo to belt in the winner.

  10. parryheid says:

If England get through then be prepared for an Orgy of self rape,

  11. Red Harry4Life says:

If Ingurland get f**ked by the Italians I wonder which United player’s fault it will be? Let the witch hunt begin. Which of our players will get their effigy burnt down in good old westham. Which player will be hunted by the media.

I place by money on Carrick or Young.

  12. MG says:

    Morning United

Eye is holding out hopefully everything will be okay up to and on Wednesday

Naturally still scared and a little down but got to keep going to get out of this.

    Hope everyone is fine…

  13. markynorbs says:

Love all my fellow United supporters. But at this moment if your against Ingurland you can kiss my St George painted arse!
Come On Rooney, Welbeck and Young!

  14. parryheid says:

Not really been reading most post’s recently so is this a medical problem with your eye ? If so hopefully it will successfully be taken care of.

  15. WillieRedNut says:

This is not the one. 8)

  16. Costas says:

Doesn’t look like Kagawa will wear the number 7 shirt:

What’s up mate? Like Parryheid, I missed any comments that referred to an eye problem.

  17. Mikekelly12 says:

    Take care buddy.
England 0 Italy 0 Penalties to decide it and fuck knows who will prevail at that stage.

  18. WillieRedNut says:

Not England Mike, if it goes to penalties. If England are to win, they must try and do it before it gets to the lottery of penalties. It’s too close to call. Maybe one piece of magic will decide it. Rooney, or Balotelli. Pirlo will pull the strings for Italy. England will need to shackle him.

  19. Costas says:

Remember a World Cup qualifying game between the 2 countries back in 96 or 97 at Wembley? When Zola won it? What a goal that was. 8) These two don’t meet often.

I also wonder how that knob Balotelli will celebrate if he scores against Hart.

  20. CedarsDevil says:

You will always have my best wishes good friend……

I got totally fucked last night mate, it was frigging hilarious……Wanted to sms you late on but I could not see the keys on me phone and as usual the bugger was laughing her socks off at me!!

Now as for tonight, Come ON England, from the heart COME ON

  21. Clint-Iamyourpapii says:

Hopefully Giggs retires….then comes back in January to reclaim the No.7 Shirt. :P

Meanwhile Gareth Bale can wear the No.11.

  22. Mikekelly12 says:

Me too mate. Had about 4 bottled of Chablis after a shit load of Becks. Rough as a badgers arse this morning!!
We’ve got to win on pens at some point.

  23. WillieRedNut says:

I won’t be cheering on England. If Rooney, Young or Danny score I will cheer! Not sure what the betting is like? Do fancy Rooney to bang one in though.

  24. Kings says:

Kagawa rejecting the number 7 shirt is another example of his humble and down to earth nature. He is very much welcome at United as far as I am concerned. Top lad and a top drawer player. Next season cannot come soon enough, even more so with the usual giddiness that comes every two years when the shower of shit known as ingerlund qualify for a major tournament.

  25. United Till I Die says:

    All the best MG.

Thoughts going out to Eusébio as well, his “big tournament performance” in 1966 with an inexperienced Portugal team remains a benchmark.

@markynorbs – personally im not so much against them, just against the hype surrounding them. If England gets a 2nd Cup in 100 years by beating Italy, Germany and whoever they’ll deserve *some* plaudits. But until that happens Italy should be respected as 4 x WC and 1 x Euro Winners and the Germans respected as 3 x WC and 3 x Euro winners. The Greeks were humble in 2004, but if England scrape a marginal victory tonight in the QUARTER FINALS they’ll be declaring themselves to be Blanco Brazilians or something daft. Thats what puts level headed people off. Personally I’d be more supportive if they acted like the One Cup nation they are and stopped pretending they have some kinda grand history when they don’t. One EPL title for Blackburn two decades ago doesn’t make them Manchester United or Liverpool today does it – and the same is true of England. Italy have reached 3 Finals in the last 20 years while England have reached one in the last Century and that was in England ffs! Im just checking under the Pasta mate. If England acted like the underdogs they are everybody would back them including me but its the delusional expectations and the arrogance that puts people off.

  26. markynorbs says:

I hear you United till I die. But I’m a patriot and I would love England to win it. Germany are a class act and have always been a outstanding footballing nation, but Italy are corrupt and two world cups were fixed under Mussolini. No respect due to Italy. Come on Ingurland!

  27. Fred says:

1-1 AET, Italy win on penalties imho.

  28. sebitjohnson says:

england 2 vs italy 2 penties 5 to3 england qualifers for semi – final

  29. Fred says:

That’s a scarily precise prediction. If it comes true I insist you come back and tell us how you knew! :)

  30. Fred says:

    Don’t call us, we’ll call you! :P

  31. United Till I Die says:

@markynorbs – I get your point about the Fascist world cup in Italy 1934 mate but the squad was still quality thats why they retained it in 1938 when France held the cup (before France was invaded by Germany). The England WC was dodgy as fuck btw. All im saying is Italy are a top footballing side that England should respect just like lower teams respect Manchester United. Funny thing is I don’t even have to make the point as we ALL saw that clear as day yesterday. I probably should’ve waited till after the game to make my point Lol. The goal post saved a very poor England twice and if Italy put away half their chances the score would’ve been 4-0 easily, and that would’ve been a FAIR result as England are not on Italy’s level, no where near, and since the Inter War years they have won major tournaments in 68, 82 and 06. Never mind the finals and semi finals they’ve reached on merit.

Imo mate England need to stop talking shit and just admit they ARE shit, maybe the nation would take them more seriously and support them. I know I would. But until then im not swallowing any British bulldog crap about England being world beaters as they ain’t, they’ve never even beaten Italy ffs. England needs to stop expecting to win tournaments as thats delusional. You’ve got to earn it first, and for those four games England were SHIT fullstop.

    Thank fuck for United aye?
