After Nemanja Vidic has been named Manchester United captain, the man who we claim will murder the opposition, it begs the question over who our hardest captain has been.

I’ll give ya a clue, he hails from Cork and he hates Alan Shearer.
I honestly don’t think I could vote for anyone other than Roy Keane. He is the epitome of toughness. Nobody ever f*cked with Keane and got away with it. It may not have almost been the smartest move, but he was going to do it regardless. True legend.
Hardest captain? From what I’ve seen in the last 15 years that I’ve followed United, it’s Keano.
“I’d waited long enough. I f*cking hit him hard. The ball was there (I think). Take that you ****. And don’t ever stand over me sneering about fake injuries.”
Ask Denis Wise lol.
“My attitude was, f*ck him. What goes around comes around. He got his just rewards. He f*cked me over and my attitude is an eye for an eye.”
@Sanj
Not his proudest moment. But this was!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10WpPVyoAZ0
Can’t find a video for the McAteer one…
Oh and this of course:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yM0E9rfceRg&feature=related
Bill Foules: Silent, but deadly
Sorry Bill Foulkes…
Bryan robson
Cantona? The craziest certainly, not the hardest.
@Costas
Love it, what a legend.
Keano without a shadow of a doubt!
Giles Oakley – I know he wasn’t captain, but Nobby Stiles could handle himself.
simple ,i saw bryan robson play, but just the speech : SEE YOU OUT THERE!!! i vote to keano
Songs out of tune, he’s been sent off, come on Sunderland!!
Scott i am spoilt for choice’s it should be Hard,Harder,Hardest n last but not least toughest (the original hard macho man Keano for me ,all other cunts ex: terry would have been shitting in there pants rt now ,ask viera he all most shit in his shorts when he tried to wind up gazza)..
keano all the way you will never get better then keano
lets give Vidic the benefit of a full season as captain…you never know, he could end up being the one?
nice to see wenger sarcastically applaud the decision and pat the assistant referee on the shoulder….I am sure the FA will let that one go, after all it is Arsene and everyone is out to get him:)
This isn’t a “who was the better captain” poll is it? Because I have to say that Bryan Robson did a phenomenal job when you consider where the club was at the time. But Roy was a tougher player I think.
Arsenal will probably hold on. The goal they scored proved that lady luck is with them today.
None of them are harder than Vidic. Keano is a different kind of beast though and has more passion than the rest in my eyes.
Arsenal miss a penalty.
it is simple with keane and robson.
robson had more talent and ability
keane had more personality and good ability.
It has to be keane has he had that vocal ability to tell players where to go. But robson I would rather in my team because? the goals he would get from midfield despite his injurys
and we add what robson done in such a limited united team well lets rephrase that, a united team of underachievers who should have done far more of what they had but they wasted those qualitys.
ffs come on Sunderland.
willierednut why didnt cesc take it. damn I could have got double pts in my fantasy football team has wigan will never score today
RTNK
Fabregas came off injured.
Zenden still plays football?
Costas – oh rite that will be a blow for arsenal if its serious
Robson better all round player, but Keane a better captain, far more influential as captain. The thing with Keane was, he still stood out in that great midfield we had in the mid to late 90′s, covered every blade of grass.
That’s one good thing big Ron done in his time at United, he bought Robbo.
@willierednut
That’s true. But one does have to wonder how influential Roy might have been if he was captain during the late 80s. As I recall a few situations during the dark period of 03-06, Roy seemed to lose control when things weren’t going our way.
That’s just my opinion though. It’s really hard to compare them.
willierednut – I thought big ron did an really good job. Yes he never won the league title but a couple of FA cups came close in the league, some good runs in europe he was just unlucky liverpool were good and we were just a phew steps below that level to win championships. United always finished in high positions we achieved more than leeds done in the late 90s and early millenium and that leeds were overrated by many
Hardest Captain… I would agree with Bill Foulkes…hard as nails when football was…
Bryan Robson Our Greatest Ever Captain…..
let vidic have his moment n win more trophies….thn we can decide fair n clear…
I wonder if Scott will post a blog about Arsenal’s reds during Wenger’s era. They just completed 50.
yea costas half a century for the gooners. just like keane when he score 50 goals
He still would have shone, but like Robson found out, we were up against a great Liverpoo side who dominated English football. Darren Benttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
ahaha bent in the 95th
Wengers whinging again lol.
@RTNK
Quick quiz. Remember the game in which he completed 50 goals?
Can we send a rescue party for Wenger’s wife? Poor woman will hear his moaning all night long…
Now wenger will blame on ball for injury of fabregas Haaaa!!!
serves you right Wenger for that sarcastic clapping when Song was sent off:)
Does ginger nut adrian durham love arsenal or something? I was hoping sunderland would nick something, a draw at least. Now hope we win tomorrow, if blackpool can nick a draw as wel (never going to happen probably) but would be a good weekend.
I heard that Song made 3 fouls worthy of a yellow and he got two yellow cards. If that’s the case, I don’t see what he has to complain about.
yep costas birmingham and that was a poor game united played. I FUCKING hated 04/05 season.
quick question guys.which team played the worse football in recent years?
04/05 united team
or?
08/09 united team. some may can me but that was some of the worst football I had seen from a championship winning united team.
I have been proven wrong sunderland did score. I enjoyed that humble pie give me more
on some said I should nit underestimate liverpool well consider the teams liverpool fielding they should be underestimated. But I know its going to be a tough game but I still they the game is there for the taken.
Samuel – united WE stand
Durhams on a anti United agenda atm, I never take him serious.
willierednut – wow are united the jesus of football. They have been crucified by idiots. I am not listening to it not wasting my time with talkshit so I have no clue what is being said.
whats wrong durham did arsenal fail and you are throwing your frustration out on united. lets play the worlds smallest violin. He is def a gimpo he must suck piers morgans dick and he cant get enough of it
@willierednut, completely agree and he seems to have this hidden agenda against rooney as wel, its beyond a joke but as a football presenter, he is completely clueless, i can assure you a 10year old kid would hold a better reasonable debate than that fool and i seriously don’t take him serious
I just think the station got him there not for his footballing experience or knowledge but the ability to bring in audience who jump on the bandwagon due to controversial pointless debates, he tries to disguise his bias in a laughable way, what a disgrace to the game.
actually united have been crucified to death for years and years and years and years and years.
the panning of the critics and being writen off time and time again I remember
1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 THESE YEARS I was told – 1994 1995 1996 1998 2001 2002 2004 2005 2006 2008 2009 2010
Martin Buchan was the reason I got hooked on United back in 1980, then I was hooked on Robbo the moment he signed on the dotted line in the centre circle at Old Trafford. Robbo for me was the hardest captain, took no prisoners. Even Vinnie Jones had the utmost respect for him – the only player he didn’t react to when he got smashed in the middle of the park. I actually like Vinne Jones after what he said he would do to Steve McMahon before the start of the 1988 FA Cup Final. Yep Robbo gets my vote.
Captain Marvel…..Robbo
People who saw him play through the 80′s would know what im talking about….every player who played with or against him pay the ultimate of ultimate compliments.
PS. Buchan…..great leader aswell as the others
I never thought Vinnie Jones was a hard player, just a dirty cunt.
Robson for me,
fantastic player,fantastic leader! at his peak better then keano…………..
and wenger is a moaning twat.
Keane I would agree as being probably the hardest captain we have had, but having been lucky enough to watch UNITED during the 80′s whilst I was living in Manchester my vote to the overall most inspirational captain would go to Robson. The guy suffered every injury known to man during his playing days and yet kept coming back stronger than ever. When ever he was out UNITED were always below par, he was a mean driving machine as well as being a great bloke.
A very small example of what he was about is in this video, and I was there that night…One of the best nights of my life and having been 2 – 0 down from the first leg…….
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B60Yg-D4M6w
Keano! Keano! Keano!
Ha! Poor Wenger, wants protection for his players from the refs and what happens, Song gets sent off! And will he moan that the ball should have been sent off for causing Cesc’s injury? 18 goals in 4 matches my ass. Now for United to make reparations tomorrow. Oh and is it crazy to hope that the Tangerines might stick out an impudent foot and make the ‘mighty’ Blues stumble? Anything can happen. This result just proves that teams WILL drop points, so as United fans we shouldn’t get all morose and despondent over the Everton and West Ham results. Onwards and upwards. Vidic to jog around with Torres in his pocket tomorrow.
I didnt have the privilege to watch either Robson or Keane play since I started following Utd about 4 years ago..but watching their tribute videos and hearing stories about them..you knew that these guys were the perfect choice for leading Utd..among the current lot..none of them have that commanding influence that Robson or Keane had..but Vidic seems like a good choice for the moment..
vinnie jones is one of the reasons why england struggle on the international stage, technically awful but uses physical advantage by hacking players down to compensate for a lack of talent, someone like him would be boo’d off every game in brazil or something, disgrace to football.
If you’re going to be a defensive minded midfield player, learn the art of defending, timing tackles, positional and tactical awareness, win the ball when you feel you can not just clattering into a player and making a career out of it.
I am hopeful that some would watch the video I posted and comment on it ;-(
Roy Keane
He still embodies what is great about Manchester United
People want to take us on right?
Yeah well come on let’s have you – give it your best shot we are standing
Read familiar?
Vinnie Jones was a bully, nothing else. He wouldn’t have lasted in the days of Bremner, Souness and Robbo.
@cedar’s devil
Mate I watched the video..Now I know why they call him Captain Marvel..But why in god’s name were Utd trying to sell him that time??
The Keane, Robson debate will always divide opinion, but Keano will always have the edge for me. I wouldn’t loved to see them play together in their prime, now that would’ve been worth seeing.
@ utd4life
UNITED were never trying to sell him mate…. At the time he was the best midfield player in Europe and there were bigger and better leagues in Europe at the time, especially Italy. He was always linked with a move abroad but the thing is he NEVER left…..
*would’ve*
@ willierednut
Having those 2 together would be mouth watering and would certainly send shivers into any team.
I would not agree that choosing between either is a debate, both are/were different players and legends in their own rights. As I said in my original post, Keane was by far ‘harder’ but Robbo was by far more inspirational, especially at a time when UNITED were winning nothing. They hardly ever won a game when Robbo was out…….
I would never chose between them, love them both
@RTNK
I’ll go on a different route mate. 03-04 was probably the worst I’ve seen United play. Sir Alex was trying to perfect the art of taking 1-0 wins and it wasn’t making us entertaining. Plus, we were missing Beckham badly at the time.
With Rooney and Ronaldo emerging, 04-05 had its moments. Plus, we won 4-2 at Highbury playing brilliant stuff. As for 08-09, again it had some moments of magic. Mainly from Ronaldo and Berba. Again, we were more concerned about clean sheets. But, when the team decided to attack, we played well. Tottenham at home, Arsenal at the Emirates, Chelsea at home…
My hero was always Captain Marvel as I grew up watching him so being bias I would say Robbo.A true matchwinner……
Without any doubt Roy Keane
ive only been a footy/united fan for about 7-8 years now and even i know that it has to be keano lol
Wins Just on The Psycho rating alone…… Although i reckon Our Erik may of held his own but never had the “nutter” demenia!!………
ps … would help if i said our very own Keano!!!!!!!!!!!! Doh!!!!!
Keano – no competition.
Keano is hard through and through – and not pretend hard that you see a lot on the football pitch where players know nothing will ever really come of acting the big man. I mean proper hard. He’s basically a thug. But he was our thug and we loved him for it. Can’t imagine a player you’d rather line up alongside in a starting 11……assuming you were willing to work your arse off on the pitch and do whatever it took to win, otherwise I don’t think you be pleased to see Roy…..
Costas – oh yes I was so depressed in april 2004. look at this – we lost 1 0 to liverpool at OT in the most pethetic fasion when a year earlier we beat them 4 0. Turn the clock back april 2003 when we were on fire beating real madrid 4 3, newcastle 6 2 and drawing at arsenal 2 2. There was this buzz about OT in 2003, with beckham still here ruud on fire. plus I was building up to the release of lord of the rings ROTK with sauron gonna appear which I could not wait for. I could even add things like kane still wearing the mask in 2003. a year later in 2004 we had to listen to arsenal jerking off has they thought they owned the 1999 united team and we could not even call on those lads, beckham was gone out of europe, out of the title race and nowt to play for. 2004 was not a kind year to be a united fan especially after the year we had in march to may 2003. with only rooney the only silver-lining to a dark dark cloud. I enjoyed 02/03 season over the 07-09 success probably because 2003 was the last united team not to be in the glazers ownership making it sweater, and we were richer.
@RTNK
2003 is always a sweet title. The amount of critism that was directed at players like Beckham, Keane, Giggs and others was disgusting. And the team really got very strong as the season went on. At first you felt CQ was trying to change things around a bit and make us a bit more defensive minded, but when April started, the team started banging goals over the place.
03-04 showed promise(in terms of winning the league, not brillint football) until Rio’s ban started. After that, we fell apart and by the Liverpool game we were completely disinterested. At least we had that spirited performance against the Arse at Villa Park to remember…
@RTNK
“2004 was not a kind year to be a united fan……..Rooney the only silver lining to a dark cloud”. Lads – in 2004 we won the FA Cup, Charity Shield and came 3rd in the league – without wanting to sound like the old man of the blog, just take a look at the 1970s and 1980s to see what bad years looked like!
Easy.. Roy Keane
hooligankicker – It’s easy to forget those years, with the success we’ve had under SAF, but you’re right, those days were tough for United fans, especially with the dippers winning every thing in sight. That’s how far United have come now, those times RTNK is talking about was deemed a rough patch.
hooligankicker – I knew that comment would be typed. look did I say it was the worst season in uniteds history no, it was used in terms 2004 was not a great year and it was not it is the end of the world. the fa cup covered loads of cracks of the 2004 team, and the worry was signings not working out really fucked united up for 2 seasons.
look at it this way, 05/06 season I loved more than 03/04 season why? because I said at the time united were on the verge of greatness because the quality football returned like 2001 and 2003, the fluency was back add attackers like ronaldo rooney giggs saha scholes workers like park oshea and even fletcher. Add the backbone of the team VDS ferdinand vidic evra. all that team needed was a good midfielder, has all the other pieces were already in place.
03/04 different story. Look at it this way, we did not have rooney, keane was decling at a fast rate, scholes seemed not himself. Van nistlerooy was starting to look unhappy and looking sluggish. The system was going towards the ronaldo type player and he was still a kid. our signings of howord djemba x2 kleberson bellion were looking a mess. So yes I think united in 2004 was a worrying squad, and I say depressing 2004 was, when you see how awesome united were in 2003 I think I have every right to say I was depressed with united in 2004
I think the 2003-2005 period was the closest thing to the 70s and 80s. United were miles behind the champions and we were giving the FA cup a real go. Of course, things were a lot worse before Fergie arrived, but to be honest, there was a while in 03-05 when I didn’t think we would win the title back anytime soon…
is united of today depressing no just frustrating and annoyed. Lets put it this way, united are like a PS3 game of myn. I almost beat the boss say I am one hit away from beating the level I die thats united. A team that almost gets over the line, thats the way it has been last season and this season a almost team winning that major prize
Costas – feb to april 2006 I felt yes we will win a title very soon. I was worried would rooney and ronaldo may leave if we don’t win titles very soon, the thought of rooney signing for united at the wrong time like robson did for united and shearer done for newcastle was a worry
@RTNK
I was more worried at thet start of that season. You were hearing a lot about the Glazers and then came the early C.L. knock out to make things worse. But when we started looking like puching Chelsea to the limit, I regained my optimism.
You make a good point about 03-04. Wasn’t so much about being spoiled. It was just that the team looked completely different 12 months earlier. But, we knew that would happen the minute Beckham and Veron left.
If you think we were miles off in 03/05 years, then how far do you think we were behind in the 70/80? The answer, light years. That time you talk about Costas was nothing like the 70/80, we were never out of the top three ffs and i quite like those times, being written off by everyone, that’s what being united supporter is all about, ups and downs.
Hard to pick between King Eric and Keano for me, Keano just edges it out methinks.
@willierednut
I know mate. But that also has to do with how much the game has changed financially since the Premier League era. It’s also a testament to where Ferguson has taken the club. It’s hard to imagine us finishing 7th or 8th. That’s why I said that the seasons we finished 3rd were the closest thing to it.
Costas – weird how ronaldo and tevez leaving in 2009 seemed like beckham and veron leaving in 2003. I felt a gaping hole in the united team in 2003 when becks left in 2003 more than ronaldo left in 2009. because the ronaldo in 08/09 was not the ronaldo that scored 23 and 42 goals in 2007 and 2008. also quieroz leaving in 2003 seemed to have effected the team in 03/04, weirdly how carlos left again in 2008 the quality of play went down yet again in the 08/09 season.
@RTNK
Me too, even though one could argue that Beckham in 02-03 wasn’t the player he was in previous seasons. But for me the biggest worry is losing creative players, not goalscorers. Quieroz leaving hasn’t helped, because I think he and Fergie complimented each other very well. But you know how it is with him…
Nobody fucked with Cantona, not even Fergie lol
Ronaldo leaving was a bigger loss, than Quieroz leaving. The latter made us hard to beat, but i wouldn’t say the football was out of this world. We were a counter attacking team in the 07/08 season, particularly in Europe, but just look at the performance at the Nou Camp, we restricted Barca to half chances in that game.
Some people forget Cantona was a pretty hard bloke! Just ask that palace fan lol. He was 6’2″ and pretty solid and didn’t take any shit. As Rai says, not even Fergie messed with him! Keane himself was in awe of the man, his captain, if you hear the way he speaks about him.
Roy Keane hands down, studs up!
September 18, 2010 at 18:08
Sanj says:
“I’d waited long enough. I fucking hit him hard. The ball was there (I think). Take that you cunt. And don’t ever stand over me sneering about fake injuries.”
Came here to quote exactly this. I’d love to have another british player like him in our team.
Keane, nuff saif.
Bryan Robson lead by example & commanded everyones respect .
No question: Roy Keane. Attitude, articulation, execution.
Ask Hangalaand.
@RNTK @Costas @willierednet
Sorry guys, I didn’t mean to sound like I was pulling age rank or telling you off or anything like that – that’s not what this forum is about at all. I think willierednut may have put my point better – it’s easy to forget how far things have come under SAF and although there’s no point dwelling in the somewhat miserable past – remember the year SAF arrived we finished 11th and most fans were actually pretty happy with that! I think it’s a bit of a warning for what could so easily happen to the club when SAF leaves – I personally am terrified of who we appoint next and how well we do under them. Tough act to follow!
If the poll was ” Who was our most courages and determined captain” I would of given it to Robbo but hardest….Keano all the way.
@hooligankicker
No offence taken mate. I know where you are coming from. What me and RTNK were talking about was the worst seasons during the time we’ve followed United. I’ve always said that I respected the hell out of every United fan who started following the club in the 70s or the 80s. They’ve seen it all.
I ‘would’ usually say Keano, but I will simply say I cannot make my mind up…through pure fear that the other candidates in your poll would ever read my comment and hunt me down.
the Irishman of course!
