If I may direct you to this article by myself:
    http://mancuniantactics.wordpress.com/the-greatest-xi/

You may see a more valid representation of the United greats.

  4. Prunierswig says:

Take out becks,Rooney and Ronaldo and
    Put in law,robson and duncan

  5. vika09 says:

P.S. Scot, no one around now is as old as you :P

    *please don’t hurt me*

  6. dazjoe says:

Doh! Forgot all about Robson! Sorry big Pete, Schmeichel out and Robson in at number 6.

  7. stewie says:

what i can’t believe that there are just 9 players better than rooney

    this is nonesense

  8. Mr Santos says:

I was only born in 1992 so I don’t remember the days of Robson etc.
I voted for 1st. Sir Giggsy 2nd. Scholesy and Keano in 3rd

  9. Jeet says:

Vikas, dont get King Eric started about STR’s age – again!

  10. RedScot says:

Where is Nani, in that list? :)

  11. zoogs says:

Not surprised by the vote…a lot of United supports/voters of the poll are “johnny come lately” or are too young to remember the greats of old. Still though, they need to educate themselves with the history of the club

  12. kanchelskis says:

    WHERE is Luke Chadwick?

    FFS

  13. shebangsthedrums says:

No place for Beckham or Rooney in that list, Edwards and Law should definitely feature. Can’t make my mind up about Ronaldo. When you talk about great players, yeh he should be there. But when you talk about United greats, players that epitomise the club and what it stands for, then you have to say Robson not Ronaldo.

  14. LackyMUFC says:

How can anyone leave Ronaldo out?? World Player of the Year, scored so many goals, got us to 2 champions league finals and then left…how can he possibly be left out??

  15. NorwegianDevil says:

Rooney and Beckham ahead of Law, Edwards and Robson?!? Really?!? The rest merrits a place, but those two lying bastards should never be there!

  16. Sindrinho says:

    Where is Solskjær?

  17. jay says:

Whether you love or hate him Ronaldo is must on that list that is for sure along with Cantona both were very influential in getting United to win trophies. Beckham for me is a difficult one because he was amazing for us but not the best technically gifted but he was definitely one of the reasons that propelled United to it’s global status.

  18. redbob says:

Rooney should never have been on that list..
I would even have RVN before Rooney.

Also I would have Scholesy further up on the list. Even before
    the great Cantona.

    C. Ronaldo and Beckham doesnt belong there either.

  19. spacemanspiff says:

I think we can fairly say that we have had the fortune of having so many truly great players that they can’t fit into a top 10 list.

  20. Dirshaye says:

All are right. All my legend are their. Except D.E. But where is S.BRUCE. Sorry 4 all my true legend are 3 Waza, Becks and Eric.

  21. Fergie is God says:

Denis Law was 11th and Duncan Edwards was 13th.
Rooney at 10th? shouldnt of been in top 20.
Wonder where Solskjare ended up, should of been up there in top 10.
I voted for Giggs, Schmeichel Scholes Cantona, Charlton in my top 5 with Giggs top as he is simply unbelieveable.

  22. Jeet says:

redbob – I would definitely have RVN before Rooney on that one, and not just because of this season’s antics. Solely on performance, I would have RVN ahead of rooney

  23. AJK says:

I don’t get what Becks, Ronaldo and Rooney are doing on that list in all honesty… leaving greats like Law(somehow understandable because he turned out for $hitty) or the likes of Robbo and Edwards.
One name that i believe belongs on that list is RedNev. he epitomises all that the club stands for and has over the years shown his commitment to the United cause. he has always given his all and i believe should be forgiven for his recent years in terms of performances.

  24. NorwegianDevil says:

    C. Ronaldo is one of only 4 United players that has been named as the worlds best player.
Some of you may not like him because of his personality, but the truth is that he desveres to be on a list like this based on his ability. Beckham and Rooney on the other hand are good players, but they are not up there with the greats!

  25. StatesideAussie says:

I have been supporting United for 45 years. Still, it is only in the 10 years or so that I have had the means to watch matches regularly (on TV, mind), and I have only seen us play “in the flesh” once. Prior to that, the only times I would see us, even on TV, would be cup finals and the like, and even that never happened before the mid 70s. My knowledge of the older generations — when United’s reputation was forged — comes mostly through what I’ve read. What little footage I’ve seen is in documentaries and the like, and that is usually focused on George Best or Sir Bobby, or the team as a whole. So honestly, there is no way for people in my situation to make a meaningful vote of the “all-time greats”, and I therefore abstain!

  26. Raizzen says:

    Roon ? Invalid. Invalid list.

  27. ahjs says:

Two token oldies but mostly modern superstars. And Rooney. Pretty disgusting list but most lists are.

  28. CowInAField says:

    vika09 says:

I think Robson scored more but I agree Keano just on merit & defo on trophies.

    No Eric? Controversial

All in all a good read

  29. EvilWacko says:

Out with Ronaldo, Beckham and Rooney. Robbo, Law and Edwards can fill up their places.

  30. Tom Addison says:

I didn’t, but seeing as though Duncan Edwards died in 1958 aged 21, I don’t think many of us are really qualified to comment on him.

Beckham at number 7 is a joke, IMHO, he was a very good player for a period of time but ahead of Roy Keane? Ahead of Bryan Robson? Ahead of Denis Law? I’ve always said this would happen, Beckham’s celebrity blinding people’s ability to assess his footballing ability.

I think Giggs being top is a bit silly as well. Of course he’s an absolute legend, but in my lifetime I’d place Cantona, Keane, Scholes and Ronaldo ahead of him. That’s it mind, just those four.

These lists are pointless anyway, I’ve commented on it before at Truly Reds. I’d show the link but the site is down! Although everyone’s entitled to an opinion, it doesn’t mean we should take those opinions seriously. I’d only be willing to take such a list seriously if it was written by certain people (such as Manchester-based journalists) above a certain age.

  31. xol says:

I think one of the things that sets us apart from the rest, is the quality and number of players that didn’t make that list of 10. You could easily compile a list of United players ranked say, 11 to 25 that would be more than a match for most rival’s top 10.

  32. wayne says:

list is a joke nothing further to say

  33. jay says:

I don’t really think you can really put a top 11, it should really be for every ten years. To be honest when Beckham, Ronaldo and Cantona were there they played better than Giggs. Denis Irwin was one of my favourite players he looked like a very ordinary man but he was a very good player, Ruud scored 150 goals in 220 games are you telling me Rooney is better than him no way. Cole and Yorke were like twin if one didn’t find the back of the net the other would. Different era the game has changed so much and the people that voted for this are probably born in the 80′s like me. We can’t vote for players we have never seen play. Ole the deadly assassin there are too many to whittle down to 11.

    It should be 1950-1960, 1960-1970, 1970-1980, 1980-1990, 1990-2000, 2000-2010 and so on.

  34. MisterDavid says:

Robson deserved to play for a better team than that of the mid-eighties – he was all Roy Keane had plus far more attacking threat, and could (and did) carry the whole team at times.

Law clearly above Beckham, Rooney etc – no problem there. I would have Charlton, Best and Giggs at the top, as (for me) doing the business for 10-15+ years puts them above Cantona, Ronaldo etc.

My picks: Charlton, Giggs, Best, Cantona, Robson, Law, Scholes, Ronaldo, Schmeichel, plus 1 of Edwards, Keane, Carey & Beckham.

  35. EvilWacko says:

    @jay
Beckham was never better than Giggs. But I agree we have too many great players to compile a top ten list; even so Rooney of all people should not be in there.

  36. Sir Ryan Giggs says:

where the fuck is G. Nev, Dennis Irwin, Dennis Law. Bryan Robson,Brucey, Palister. Wtf are Ronaldo, Rooney and Becks doin on that list. People who have voted for this stuff have been watching football for the last 5 years according to me.

  37. Jeet says:

Jay, I agree (not least because I have been following Utd only since the 90s). Judging from my short experience as a Utd. fan, my best XI would be (mind you, I am talking of pure ability and performance, not loyalty and attitude):
Schmeichel, RedNev, Staam, Rio, Evra, Ronaldo, Keane, Scholes, Giggs, Cantona, RVN

Ahh, what a team that would have been if we could adjust clocks and get all of them playing together at their peak….sigh…

  38. Chep13 says:

I didn`t vote, but people would hardly vote for Edwards or Denis Law who they never seen play. not even my father born in 1952 would be able to vote and compare Edwards to Cantona or Beckham. so then it is only based on information received via various pages and popularity of the players. nothing else

  39. Tom Addison says:

I agree with Jay, it should be done by era, but where you draw the boundaries might raise further questions as well.

Beckham, number 7, I’m still in shock!

  40. keano86 says:

    Fucking hell get a grip.

  41. Chep13 says:

Moreover, as you see from the posts here, all have different opinion, considering my father would hardly find the poll on the web himself, it is clear who voted. I do not know how many votes have been registered, tho

  42. jay says:

A lot of comment on who should be in the top 11 seem to stem from whether a player left or has been loyal. If that is the case half the players should not be on the list. If this is about ability then certainly people should not have a problem with Ronaldo on the list. Denis Law went to Manchester City and don’t get me started on Best who was the original Beckham but less focused, prone to missing training and indulging in alcohol. But do I begrudge them to be on the list NO WAY, both were very talented gifted players who also won the Ballon d’or this is exactly the same thing Ronaldo did with United so he has every right to be on the list because this is about loyalty we can add Wes Brown, John O’Shea and so on.

  43. willierednut says:

So what? Springs to mind. Big game tonight, need to get focused on that and a revitalized Villa team.

  44. StatesideAussie says:

@EvilWhacko … “we have too many great players to compile a top ten list” … it might be even harder to compile a top 10 list if we hadn’t had so many great players lol

  45. StatesideAussie says:

@willie … yeah, no-one’s talking about tonight’s game! Not even a routine preview in today’s papers! what’s up with that? I bet Sir Alex has been talking about it to the lads in training!

  46. vika09 says:

I don’t think I can agree with Jay. Choosing a top 11 (not in the style done by the Utd site) not just involves the players but formation, how they play, their motivations etc.

Choosing it decade by decade makes it too easy and will most likely end up choosing the dominate players in that era. Defeating the purpose of choosing 11 players to form the greatest team.

We are blessed in the respect that we can actually choose a great 11 decade by decade, but that’s not the purpose. There will be the time when some great players are ignored because they don’t fit into certain system of play. But what the United ‘fan’ site did was hopeless, basing it purely on the player’s superficial impact on the team rather than their contribution to the club itself.

  47. coogie says:

Seeing Rooney on that list makes me fucking sick!!!

  48. Dazbomber says:

It’s hard to say who’s better than who , but my dad and his friends say that Edwards was the best Player that ever lived . They have seen them all

  49. North Stand Tier 2 says:

There is absolutely no way that you can argue that Ronaldo doesn’t deserve to be in this list. He will go down as one of the greatest players of all time. Unbelievable entertainer (does a skill everytime he gets the ball – which pretty much always comes off), incredible goalscorer (left foot, right foot, free kicks, pens, headers), and scorer of incredible goals (Pompey freekick, Porto Champs League, Villa backheel). The guy was and is phenomenal. Anyone saying otherwise is judging it on disliking his personality. He scored 44 goals in one season, scored a goal in the Champs League final, what else could you want from a forward?

The thing about Beckham was he was brilliant – second to none in the history of football – at doing his job, whipping early crosses into the box and finding the striker. Without him there is no way Yorke, Cole and Ruud would have scored the same amount of goals! Yes he is a celebrity, and yes he left the club, but he was the best there ever was and what he did and is deservedly on this list in my opinion.

  50. Jeet says:

yeah, lets talk about tonight….any news on Carrick’s fitness?

  51. BloodRed says:

ronaldo definately needs to be on the list, whoever says he shouldn’t is fucking retarded

  52. jay says:

@North Stand Tier 2 loving the passion in your comment, fucking brilliant. Cantona was the reason I started supporting United and it was not for the footballing reason it was because he karate kicked the fan after he had insulted him. To me Cantona was a bad ass. Everybody knew supported Arsenal but to me Manchester United was like a rebel team.

  53. shubhangmanred says:

Hey guys this is my first post on this site. Been reading up all of your blogs since the past month but just created my account.
    I voted for
    1. ‘Sir’ Ryan Giggs
    2. ‘King’ Eric Cantona
    3. Paul ‘Ginger Prince’ Scholes

    Rooney 10th? nah…

  54. in Sir Alex we trust says:

i voted for Giggsy, Besty and Sir Bobby … Ronaldo and Rooney still needs to do alot to get in there

  55. kaihnsn says:

    op 10 for me…1. cantona 2. robson 3. keane….on and on

btw i start watching united in early 80’s. if based on Sir Bobby interview i will put duncan edwards in no 2 spot.

  56. shubhangmanred says:

@North Stand Tier 2 Brilliantly said mate! Ronaldo deserves it….people would see him in better light….if he stops being arrogant and stuff.
Off topic but …Plz next season someone else needs to wear the No.7 jersey..someone worthy of breaking into that list!

  57. CedarsDevil says:

Lists such as this or best 11 of all time etc are based on personal opinions, no point really going into an argument about it…… Each United fan has his/her own option of selection, after all they are all United players we are talking about…….

Personally I would never have a top 10 list without Bryan Robson in it… Having watched him live for years to me he is the best captain we have ever had (Not starting a Keano v Robbo debate please) The man broke every bone in his body playing for the club and he literately carried the team on his own during the tough years in the 80′s…. Captain Fantastic

  58. Raizzen says:

    Jeet,

Stop that! That seriously sounds exactly like what a Scouse fan would say! Anything but harping on HISTORY! :P

  59. GoatinaUnitedShirt says:

    My Top 10.
    1.Best
    2.Scholes
    3.Scmeichel
    4.Edwards
    5.Charlton
    6.Foulkes
    7.Giggs
    8.Law
    9.Cantona
    10.Dunne

  60. North Stand Tier 2 says:

    @ Jay

I get annoyed having to defend Ronaldo and Beckham all the time. I have to do it to all the twattish Spurs and Gooner fan mates I have don’t want to have to do it here!

Yes Ronaldo was a twat, he always will be, but he was immense. Priveledged to have watched him live for 5-6 years.

Everyone who is between 25-30 odd surely supported Utd because of Cantona – the guy was a legend, so many great goals, important goals too, and that karate kick was almost as good as the Seagulls comment which followed.

So what is the news for tonight? Hernandez or Rooney to start? If Rooney starts, need to stop shunting him to he left, it’s hindering him more than anything else!

  61. United1990 says:

So C.Ronaldo and Rooney are better than the three Scott mentioned? :@ fuck!

  62. chuffer says:

How far would I have to go down the list to find Ralph Milne??? I guess immediately after Eric – so good they named him twice – Djemba Djemba!!

On a serious note………….I’m hoping Whiteside is only just outside that top ten ………..ffs!!

  63. Dizzy says:

    Where’s Possebon? 11th, I guess.

  64. Clinton says:

Just checking if my gravatar works.

  65. GoatinaUnitedShirt says:

  67. Jeet says:

Raizzen, on the topic of scousers, a friend of mine who’s a Liverpool fan tore off a Torres poster from his wall, commenting “His right place is in the BIN”…I LMAOed, and you shopuld have seen his face!

  68. willierednut says:

Goat – I wouldn’t have Ronaldo, or Rooney in my top 10. Both tried to engineer a move out of United. One succeeded, the other one bottled it big time. @Jeet Don’t know if Carrick is fit mate. If he isn’t fit, then Ando and fletch will probably be the midfield tonight.

  69. ryandunny says:

Where the hell is Tosic? Remember that one free kick against Spurs that nearly caused a goal?
    Outraged I am!!!

  70. Jeet says:

Costas – you forgot the ketchup

  71. Bjorn says:

Born in ’69 but I know my history. Saying ‘I can only comment on those I saw’ doesn’t cut it with me.
    In chronological order:
Roberts, Meredith, Edwards, Charlton, Law, Best, Robson, Keane, Giggs, Ronaldo
I cut Byrne for Keane, possibly wrongly.

  72. Uanhoro James says:

Just too bad. Clearly very young fans who won’t take the time to understand the club but just vote Sir Bobby Charlton cos it’s Sir Bobby, then put in their favorite stars, Rooney et al. Pathetic!!!!

Rooney being on the list simply discredits it. Ronaldo can’t be considered a United legend IMO cos there’s nothing higher than a legend at a club ehhh? Beckham NO NO Never. Beckham’s just a politician who tries to play everyone and thank goodness we now know he engineered his move away.

There’s some missing names from the list – If that was truly our all time greatest 11, then sorry, Manchester United isn’t that great (Some pathetic personalities on that list) and We all know it’s the greatest club on earth. Where on earth is Duncan Edwards? A player who made the great Sir Bobby feel inferior? It’s like Torino fans ignoring Mazzola and the members of Il Grande Torino to include names like Rolando Bianchi. Rooney???? Common.

  73. CedarsDevil says:

    Willie

I see STR was successful in re signing Costas…….. Best transfer deadline deal IMO

    Great job STR

    (Wonder how much he cost?)

  74. wayne says:

off topic but got a laugh out of it,anyone else notice all the last minute deals ‘arry tried to do.charlie adam, aguero, forlan, the guy has a sickness he’s like a compulsive shopper.compare him to a hot date that looks good on the surface but costs a fortune, with ‘arry he does really well with clubs before he bankrupts them

  75. willierednut says:

    Where’s Lord Lucan?

  76. Bjorn says:

    Eric in, Keane out.

  77. vika09 says:

Jesus. I posted my blog once and I already have 250 hits! Thanks everyone!

Hopefully I get a few regulars, I will be posting analysis for every (most :) ) matches.

  78. smartalex says:

My top 11 (for tonight.) I plan to be 3 up at half time (crazy, I know.)

Van Der Sar , Rafael Rio Evans Evra , Nani Anderson Scholes Giggs , Berbatov Rooney

Res: Kuszczak, Smalling, O’Shea, Fabio, Gibson, Owen, Chicharito

On 55 minutes, Gibson and Owen for Berbatov and Scholes.
On 70 minutes, O’Shea for Giggs (Evra to LW)

    Final score 4:0.

  79. GoatinaUnitedShirt says:

willierednut, agree with you mate and I believe to be a great then you have to make a massive difference over a prolonged period of time. Ronaldo would be in my top 15 but that is only because he is one of the top 3 players the world has ever seen. The poll is supposed to be the top 10 greatest Manchester United Players, Manchester United being the focus not the player. Ronaldo was just passing through.
As for Rooney to be voted as a great player I think it helps that you are a credit 1. to the club, 2. to the fans and 3 to yourself. Rooney could score 40 goals a season for the next 8 years and he would still struggle to get into the top 15. He will never be a great. Sure 30 goals here 20 goals but that doesnt make him a great, Manchester United have dozens from the past with records like that. Hes only on the list because the very young are also allowed to vote.

  80. smartalex says:

Happy match day all you Reds! COME ON UNITED!!!!!

  81. willierednut says:

Costas – Just a quick a word, on your return to RoM. Did STR give you assurances about the ambition of the blog?

  82. theboy says:

neither of the djemba twins? klebfoot? gibbo? milne? Ashley grimes? Colin & Terry Gibson? How can you have list without these greats???

  83. CedarsDevil says:

Damn Costas, so it was all about lack of ambition here?

  84. Jeet says:

Goat, for a compulsive knicker-sniffer like you, that’s very rich re: rooney…kidding mate, no offence meant!

  85. bigphil2003 says:

I voted in the poll – for Giggs. Can’t say I’m sorry for my vote, but the list does look quite wonky!

  86. Jeet says:

Costas – did willie, redscot, smartalex and the other acolytes turn up in balaclavas? Did STR do an “emotional” interview?

  87. Devilsadvocate says:

    1. Charlton
    2. Giggs
    3. Best
    4. Cantona
    5. Robson
    6. Edwards
    7. Law
    8. Taylor
    9. Scholes
    10. Neville

  88. smartalex says:

Perhaps StR can arrange a RoM poll. Age filters can be applied after the votes are cast.

  89. GoatinaUnitedShirt says:

You know in the oscars they had to bring in award for “lifetime achievement”, a nothing award awarded to someone who should have with hindsite received an oscar but was in reality never good enough. Well maybe this top 10 should get a special award for the player who couldnt sell a shirt because he was such a pug that the rope he tried to end it all with was so disgusted it slithered away. The chair he was going to kick away whilst hanging himself spontaneously combusted so he wouldnt feature in the furnitures encyclopedia for famous chairs. The razor blades in his bathroom dulled themselves. He even took a holiday to New York in 2001 and was going to jump from the world trade center but the buildings magnetically sucked in some innocent near flying aircraft and fell to the ground. Totally oblivious to what had happened this former player just walked of the edge and fell into a powder bed. He was involved in a ship sinking amongst the islands of greece but a dolphin grabbed hold of him and drug him to land telling him in no uncertain terms to fuck off. He tried to drown himself in a nearby river and winter came two months early and froze.

The award for WTF in a United shirt goes to:
    Luke Chadwick

  95. lawman10 says:

where is Stam???with out doubt the best centre back we have ever had!!!!

  96. Costas says:

Ok. Someone asked me on FB whether I was back or not. I haven’t posted anything on this blog since Saturday. The “Costas” posting here for the last 3 days has been an imposter. I’d appreciate it if Scott could somehow block people from using the same username because a lot of confusion is created. Not to mention that other posters like King Eric have had the same problem. If a troll doesn’t have the guts to show his face, something must be done.

However, if a username can not be exclusive for someone, just know that whoever posts as Costas from now on won’t be me. WHen I decide to come back, I’ll have someone from FB (like Corea or MG) confirm that it’s truly me. Adios.

  97. Redranz says:

Has Obertan really handed in a transfer request, or should I feel the appropriate amount of shame for even asking?

Compulsive knicker sniffer indeed, chance would be a fine thing. I only have my wifes knickers at home and i wouldnt put organic matter near them. They look like shes strained pancake mix through them, they crackle when they walk out the laundry basket. I realise that she thinks of me all day but can a goat really induce so much excitement. Goat = Fanny Batter

  101. smartalex says:

I haven’t spoken to the impersonator as I was clear it could not be the real Costas!

  102. YorYor says:

That’s just the way United is really. Even if we have a Top 100, it won’t be enough for the good/great players we’ve ever seen, or will see.
One thing’s for sure, the best Manager ever will be SAF. No arguments, no buts, no ifs. Just nods.

Someone said Becks is not the most technically gifted? So what does he do, put a remote control in his fingers to control where his crosses/freekicks should land? If you don’t call that gift, I don’t know what is. Running around like a headless chicken?

  103. King Eric says:

Piss take. No Robson or Law.

  104. King Eric says:

Jeet – Hello mate. He still hasn’t answered my question. Very cagey!

  105. Jeet says:

Goat, LOL, you almost made me retch…I didnt even know who Luke Chadwick was till I googled him, saw his pic and retched some more…

  106. Terrystears says:

Ronaldo in the top 5 is disgusting

  107. RedDan says:

wayne rooney????? please tell me what retards put that scouse twat before Ole??? fucking muppets , its true we have been blessed with such great talent over the years Irwen, Hughesy Whiteside Macari could go on and on but wayne rooney??? FUCK OFF cant get me head round that one at all, shame on yous who voted

  108. Jeet says:

Hello, King Eric – yeah, I noticed. My suspicions grow stronger!

  109. RedDan says:

    sorry, Irwin

  110. willierednut says:

smartalex – I’m not really here mate. I’m a figment of your imagination.

  111. CedarsDevil says:

    Costas

Is this for real? Blimey sounds creepy in a way…… Only the original Costas as far as I am concerned

  112. King Eric says:

Tom Addison – Ronaldo above Giggsy? Are you serious mate? Not fit to lace Ryan’s boots . He should however still be on the list as many rightly say but the same people say Rooney shouldn’t . Why? Ronnie was no different . Wayne has been a top player for United for 6 or 7 years now.

  113. ryandunny says:

http://ryandunny.wordpress.com/2011/02/01/if-caroll-is-worth-35-million-then-how-much-is-chicharito-worth/ new piece up lads if any of ye (smart alex) care to read :L
I should really started feeding off the success of RoM :S

  114. smartalex says:

I am well CedarsDevil, thank you! I hope you are raring to go. I didn’t say hello to you or any other specific individual today, as I have been quietly seething at the fact that someone is impersonating Costas. I could not mention it, else the impostor would know I am on to him. Now that the real Costas has confirmed this subterfuge I will say my piece.

It is pointless having user names if they are not limited to 1 person. RoM could just post all the comments in a list without any name attached. Obviously the community would disintegrate, so no joy there.

    Scott the Red
Please resolve this issue. Please tell us that you will resolve this issue.
For today’s match, please individually block the false Costas, as it is abundantly clear that we all want the real Costas to be present.

    Thank you.

  115. King Eric says:

Cedars – Bang on about Robbo mate. My boyhood idol. Even bought new balance boots. Carried the team and without Robson United were poor. Great left peg, box to box, hard as fuck, goal scorer and broke his leg twice, collar bone , ankle.

  116. rtpop says:

The all time greats need to be an infusion of the past and the present + an how can an all time United Greats XI not have the United Trinity – LUNACY

  117. wayne says:

is that the real costas posting or is that the imposter pretending to be the real costas?

  118. The Red says:

No way Rooney should be in this list.

  119. King Eric says:

Costas – How do you mean mate? Where have you been? There hasn’t been a Costas posting here the last three days has there? Whats up mate?

  120. Jeet says:

To the porn-consuming impersonator – did you acolyze the real Costas?

  121. willierednut says:

Biggest transfer story last night, Alex Reid has left Jordan!

  122. smartalex says:

willierednut your imaginary fig leaf has slipped, I see 2 big red nuts that could only belong to the original willierednut!

    FEBRUARY 1, 2011 AT 11:04
    Costas says:
    where’s veron

Does that look like Costas said it? At the very least there would be a capital W and a ‘?’

What about the ‘porn’ comment? Fucking pathetic drivel that could only exist in “inverted commas” in a comment made by RoM’s Costas.

  123. RedDan says:

how much would Robbo cost us now??? i agree King Eric he was every young United fans hero i can remember him signing ill never forget the FA Cup 85 semi final against the murderers at maine rd proper LEGEND

  124. willierednut says:

He’s got a point, where is Veron?

  125. King Eric says:

Oh and IF this Obertan transfer request IS true then Fergie should kick his arse all the way back to France. Fucking ponce. Fight for your place you prick. Robbie Brady is already better than this cunt on the left side.

  126. mu21 says:

Why is there no defender???steve bruce, gary pallister, vidic, ferdinand, jaap stam? without them united wont go far

  127. sb says:

If the list doesn’t include Ralphy Milne it isn’t worth bothering with

  128. Dave Mack says:

Off topic but did you hear Torres talking about why he moved to Chelski? He basicly said, he moved because they are a “big club and are well known around the world”.

Wonder how that makes the scousers feel this morning!

  129. jitterbugbhoy says:

While defenders aren’t fashionable, the absence of Steve Bruce & Denis Irwin is also a disappointment. Gary Neville would certainly rank above Ronaldo for my money. Ferdinand has been there nearly 9 years now too.

Talking forwards, Mark Hughes or Ole Solskjaer may well have a better case than Rooney. Brian McClair too often forgotten as well.

I really dont disagree with no.1 though – its Giggs all the way. Only in 30 years or so will we properly comprehend and appreciate what he achieved with us.

  130. wayne says:

chelsea aren’t a big club, fucking b rated club that no one gives a fuck about and lose millions every year.as dirty harry would say “legends in their own minds”

  131. CedarsDevil says:

    King Eric

I actually met captain fantastic during the signing of his book…….. What a bloke, what a gentleman

A true RED LEGEND ……… Fucking still remember his goal against the dippers in the FA cup semi replay at Main Road ……….. By far my all time United hero

  132. Real AB says:

The list make no sense to me.. So I’ll ignore it.

BTW – It’s a real problem if many people can use one name. Costas said, It should not be allowed and I fully agree with him.
As it can create confusion and misunderstanding.

STR can you do something about it mate?

  133. rnicolas says:

Wait guys. First, I am glad no-one is arguing the top spot. Arise Sir Ryan Giggs.
Second, who wants Cristiano Ronaldo out of the list? Love it or hate it. Accept it or deny it – Cristiano gave more than our very own Eric.
As for Rooney, Becks – great players indeed, but in my PERSONAL opinion Robbo should be head and shoulders ahead of Beckham. And the Lawman can teach Rooney how to score some goals.

  134. mu21 says:

    @Dave

Torres is more of a dick then ronaldo is

  135. willierednut says:

Chelsea fans with El nino on the back of their tops and the number 50 lol.

  136. mancstan says:

    Rooney, no.

    Ronaldo, yes.

  137. willierednut says:

Where’s Mark Robbins? He saved Fergies job after all.

  138. CedarsDevil says:

    Willie

Is this the real you? I am confused, perhaps some nutty dick head is using your name here…. How will I know?

Any hoo, as far as I am concerned there is only one Willie and only one Costas

  139. andi says:

    1. Best
    2. Giggs
    3. Scholes
    4. Bobby Charlton
    5. Denis Law

wtf, cantona second place? it’s a fu**ing disgrace!

  140. StatesideAussie says:

… the “exclusive username” thing is an issue. On the other hand, I know that for Scott, that would require a whole bunch of account-management stuff to be implemented, which would not be trivial. (It’s more work than you think, guys.) Well, look on the bright side: the way it is now, if you ever make a really dumb-ass comment (you know, one that you’d give your left nut to take back or edit), at least you can always claim that comment was made by an impostor lol

  141. willierednut says:

CedarsDevil – It’s me! Costas will be back, you need a break from here, now and again.

  142. smartalex says:

    CedarsDevil
It is frustrating. It is the real willierednut. Of course, that doesn’t mean an imposter won’t attempt to infiltrate RoM under his, yours or anyone else’s chosen username. I have noticed in the past that StR responds to reasonable requests, so there is hope!

Are there any other RoMmers who feel strongly enough to post their dismay at the enforced absence of Costas, our costastician, our kebab master, our friend?

  143. Ulster Red says:

    smartalex
i say let him be and he will be back in his own time!

  144. CedarsDevil says:

    smartalex & Willie

Cheers for the clarification mates, I fell better for it………

    3 – 0 tonight anyone?

  145. Red Ben says:

This has been voted on by kids / teenagers. People who read a magazine or go to the website aren’t representative of the true cross-section of fans.

  146. Ulster Red says:

this will be a tough game, cant see us rolling them over to easily.

  147. RedScot says:

This is not me, its someone impersonating me.How very dare you.Dammed imposter.

  148. smartalex says:

I understand that willierednut and Ulster Red feel “let him be and he will be back in his own time” and “you need a break from here, now and again” but that presumes that Costas’ absence is not due to his stated reason. Also, who is next? Are we always to consider that what we read is possibly not coming from the person we are talking to?

That means no conversing, only commenting.

StatesideAussie advises that the implementation of username control is not a trivial matter. I consider it critical. Initially, it could be done on a ad-hoc basis. Costas has brought an impostor to StR’s attention. That impostor can be advised that the username is already taken, he must chose another. Eventually the ‘account management stuff’ can be implemented.

  149. CedarsDevil says:

Football Fucking Hell as our great boss once said….. Just watched a replay of our win over Villa when Macheda got that winner…….At a time when John Champion was still calling him Masheda!

C’Mon Lads lets pile on the pressure

  150. toby says:

    I voted for

    Cantona
    Giggs
    Ronaldo.

I dont know how Rooney got in to the top 10. I voted for players that I have seen whilst I have been alive, so from about 1992, although I was born in 87 I dont remember watching any football.

Anyway, I thought Cantona had already been voted the best Untied player of all time?

@Red Ben I go on the website to apply for tickets (which is quite often), does that mean I’m not a representative of the true-cross section of fans?

  151. thisistheone says:

am i missing something here? because i cant believe there is no kleberson and djemba djemba on this list haha no seriously this list is still quality, not been disrepectful here but how may utd fans are still alive that have actually seen duncan edwards play, not many so they only go on what they was told, i do agree that denis law should be in the top 10 though.

  152. CedarsDevil says:

    RedScot

How will we ever know? Not you, please!

  153. silverfire says:

WHen that poll came out, the question was ‘who is you FAVOURITE player of all time.’ Not necessarily who is the BEST, just your favourite, so that would explain some of the name you se there and why some was left out….also, the young voters on Facebook would have had a huge say.

  154. Ulster Red says:

    smartalex
it happened to me months back, somone came on as ulster_red and made a comment, luckily they made a typo as you can see my name has no underslash in it.

  155. RedScot says:

@Cedars, dear you will always know its me.Mwahhhh. Particularly if I start, capering and swearing like a trooper, today i am being a good boy.
It would be good to see the real” Costas ” back though. ;)

  156. james says:

Im a fairly young United Supporter but I always hear about Duncan Edwards, the Charltons and especially Best from my old man who is a life long Man Utd supporter.

I can see why Cristiano is on the list. He was amazing and I have never felt a buzz about a player like I did with him. My Dad says the feeling when Ronaldo got the ball was similar to Best, they could just do anything with it.

Rooney in my opinion doesn’t belong on the list, no way near it in fact. You belong on lists like this for being a total Man Utd player, with the exception of Ronaldo, who gave us so much!

I have many many many favourites for different reasons:

Steve Bruce for the double headed goals in injury time.

Andrei Kanchelskis for the way he flew down the wing.

Peter Schmichael for the way he made me and my brothers look on in amazement as he effortlessly would throw the ball across the halfway line again and again.

Giggsy for that goal against Arsenal and the way he has dedicated himself to United, along with Scholesy, Gnev etc.

I could see players like Hernandez making list in the future!

FUCKING HELL I JUST LOVE FOOTBALL!

  157. willierednut says:

RedScot – Pull the other one, my mad Scottish friend lol.

  158. CedarsDevil says:

Expert pundit Alan Curbishley predicting that Villa will end our unbeaten run today… My verdict?

Throw him in to the OT pitch along with Andy Townsend

    Less cunts to deal with

  159. Ulster Red says:

    willie
are you making a trip to dublin by any chance tomorrow week?

  160. RedScot says:

@Willie. Ha Ha, leave you too it Lads I see some of the lads want to comment seriously on the article. Bad of me. Laters.

  161. dm87red says:

    Where’s Ole?

  162. dm87red says:

Well I voted for 1. Giggs, 2. Best, 3. Keane

  163. willierednut says:

Ulster Red – No mate. Whats happening?

  164. smartalex says:

    Ulster Red
If a city wum comes on RoM and abusively lies, or attacks the blog, there will likely be a response from StR.

As the usurping of stalwart’s user names is a complete lie and a vicious attack on the integrity of RoM, I hope that StR will react.

We need you, Scott the Red.

  165. Saad says:

Clearly it was the Internet generation that did most of the voting, people born after 1980. These people saw Giggs, Scholes, Cantona, Beckham, Ronaldo and Rooney and hence the obvious skew towards more recent players. Yet again, voting has proven its own deficiency and short-sightedness.

In terms of what he means to the club: Sir Ryan / Sir Bobby / Cantona
In terms of sheer abilty: Best / Cantona / Ronaldo / Berbatov / Scholes / Edwards
In terms of service to the club: Sir Ryan / Sir Bobby / Law / Scholes / GNev / Best

Common denominator: Sir Ryan / Sir Bobby / Cantona

I have not ranked them…just named them.

  166. james says:

I forgot Mr Roy Keane, the hardest bastard I have ever seen on a pitch.

My old man said he was a dying breed and the game used to be filled with players like him. I miss him to this day. I loved the way he stuck up for Neville in the tunnel against Viera that time, I loved it when he almost smashed that guys legs to pieces in premeditated revenge. He was filled with passion and a desire to win, much like Fergie only instead of the hair dryer he’s probaly butt you in the nose!

I shall tell my kids about him!

  167. Ulster Red says:

    willie
the carling cup of nations lol

  168. Ulster Red says:

    smartalex
i agree that once a username has been took then that individual can be the only person posting from that name.

  169. james says:

    Saad – well said!

I think everyone has their favourites for different reasons, but you just hit the nail on the head regarding Manchester United servants! They were/are genius’.

  170. willierednut says:

Anyone can use my name, but they’ll have to pay me a hefty fee.

  171. Berbatov's Love Life says:

Why isn’t Darren Gibson on the list?

  172. PARTY LIKE ITS 1999 says:

robson not even on the list??? have to be biased here but i was brought up in the 80,s standing on the united road watching bryan robson sometimes single handedly pull united out of the shit, best united player ive seen, pure guts and gave everything for us. sorry but rooney wouldnt make my list, also what about stevie coppell, gordon hill, lou macari………fuckin legends.we might not have won titles in that era but just watching these guys was brilliant.

  173. DAVE RED says:

Did you have to be born after 1970 to take part in this poll ?
Denis Law should have been the third member of the holy trinity to be there, and no
Duncan Edwards and Tommy Tayler, who if they had not died at Munich, would have gone
down as two of Uniteds greatest ever players, Edwards for sure.

  174. Saad says:

    @James

Thanks mate. But before anybody lambasts me for the names I chose, please remember…I consider the list incomplete. I havent categorized Captain Marvel (Robbo) or Keano or RVN or Solskjaer or Tommy Taylor or Paddy or Wazza or Vida or Rio or Schmeichel or VDS or Billy Meredith or Jack Rowley or Sparky or Dennis Viollet or Bill Foulkes or…

    Catch my drift? ;)

  175. StatesideAussie says:

@Saad … “Clearly it was the Internet generation that did most of the voting, people born after 1980.” That would be the obvious assumption, but it’s not that clear really. I was born in 1960 and have supported United since I was 5. But as I pointed out in my earlier post, due to circumstances beyond my control, (a) I am not able to go to matches in person, and (b) until fairly recently, I didn’t get to see a lot of the team on TV either because, until cable became widespread, only occasional matches were available on ‘regular’ TV. It’s a fair bet that the majority of overseas fans (of which United has millions) are in the same boat, even if they were born before 1980. In my case, I did not vote, and nor would I, because it’s impossible for me to judge players I never saw, not even on TV (except in the occasional documentary). For that reason, I agree with earlier posts which suggested it would be better to have these votes based on smaller periods, rather than “all-time greats”.

  176. Saad says:

    @DAVE RED

Had that tragedy not happened, the following would most likely have happened:

    1) England would have beaten Hungary in the 1958 friendly (“Match of the Century”)
    2) England would have either won or gone far in the ’58 WC (with Taylor and Edwards in the side)
    3) England would DEFINITELY have won the ’62 WC
    4) Duncan Edwards would’ve been captain of the ’66 WC winning side
    5) United would’ve beaten Bolton in the ’58 FA Cup final
    6) United would’ve beaten Real Madrid in the ’58 European Championship final
    7) Tommy Taylor would’ve eclipsed Dixie Dean’s single season scoring record
    8) Tommy Taylor would’ve scored more than 300 goals for United
    9) Duncan Edwards would’ve won at least one Ballon d’Or
    10) …and most importantly, United would’ve done the treble A LONG TIME AGO!

  177. dannysoya says:

even i was shocked when i saw Wayne Rooney in the top 10. i am not one of those who hate him as i have forgiven him BUT he doesn’t deserve to be in the top 10. i mean DUNCAN EDWARDS ANYONE? BRYAN ROBSON , STEVE BRUCE , DENNIS LAW ( this is one of the worst how is he not in the top 10), MARK HUGHES. WOW!!!!

  178. Saad says:

    @StateSideAussie

You forget…the Internet generation also includes about 200 million fans from Asia and Africa who didnt get to see United games on TV until after the formation of the Premier League. I bet if this vote was limited to local fans who have been following United for the past 30-50 years, the results would be less skewed.

  179. Saad says:

Another thing that vexes me about this poll result is that CR7′s obviously high female fanbase (especially in the Far East) caused him to land ahead of Ginger Ninja in the poll. I’m sorry but that just does not sit well with me.

  180. hammons says:

the people that think that Ronaldo does not deserve to be in the top 10 are fucking clueless. im sorry, and I know I should not rip our own set of supporters, but my god. do you know what the boy brought to the team? The boy is head and shoulders above both Beckham and Rooney. Do I think he deserved 5th? No.

manutd.com did an awful thing by trying to cross over generations. they did not set parameters of the poll to define the best player.

Tommy Taylor, Duncan Edwards, Dennis Law and Bryan Robson all should have been included. its a shame that some of these modern day supporters do not even have clue who any of these four legends are and what they did during their time at the time.

  181. StatesideAussie says:

… and for that matter, who among us is qualified to pass judgment on players like Bob Donaldson (active 1892-97, 66 goals in 147 appearances) or Joe Cassidy (1893, and 1895-1900, 99 goals in 147 appearances)? I’m guessing none of us ever saw them play (just a wild guess, mind you) and there can’t be that much old footage hanging around, yet judging purely by their scoring records, they must have been pretty good. Especially since the offside rule was so much tougher in those days.

For those who actually give a hoot: The history of the offside rule in the 1800s isn’t that clear, but for many years, a player was offside any time he stood ‘in front’ of the ball, so the ball always had to be passed backward, a bit like rugby. During the mid to late 1800s, this began to change, eventually adopting a forerunner of today’s rule in which offside was judged depending on how many defenders were between you and their goal. However, it was much tougher than today, because throughout the late 1800s, the usual standard was a minimum of 3 to 4 defenders (as opposed to today’s 2). The two-defender rule didn’t come in until 1925, so when guys like Donaldson and Cassidy were banging them in, they were doing it under much tougher rules.

Not to mention that all those players also played in the no-substitutes era (no substitutions were allowed in English football until 1965-66 — yes, 65-66), so they always played the full 90 minutes, and on shitty pitches (especially in winter). It’s so-so-hard to make comparisons across different eras. Cheers!

  182. fergie is the boss says:

hammons – ronaldo is lucky to even make the topp 10. Is ronaldo ahead of giggs scholes best charlton law cantona schmeicheal robson keane no, he does make the top 10 but at best he is at no 10.

This is my top 10 united players

best charlton scholes giggs cantona law robson schmeicheal keane ronaldo

  183. fergie is the boss says:

But I have NP with giggs at no1 because he is just so damn special

  184. bryanrobson's my hereo says:

wtf is rooney doing in there- besides the fact that he is a money-grabbing, thick ugly, disloyal scouser, her has not come close to achieving all-time greatness.
beckham should not be in top 10 either. good crosser and free kick taker. other than that, never had much else and was not around for long enough and did not score enough important goals to get into a top 10 list.
Keane was good enough but didnt play in the team for long enough or score enough important goals. he should not be in the top 10 either.
Schmiecel was in our top 5 best goalies but did not have enough of an impact or play for long enough to warrant a top 10 spot.
scholes is a border line case.
Giggs- certainly warranted top 10 inclusion and probably top 5 inclusion.
    ditto charlton and best.
Cantona, definitly up there in terms of talent but was he around for long enough to make top 10 and top 5? I dont think so.
Ronaldo/ definitly in top 5 in terms of talent but his lack of longetivity would place him further towards the bottom of my list.
ridiculous that today’s spotty teenagers are so dense they didnt include denis law.

    My top 10

    1 Charlton
    2 Law
    3 Best
    4 Giggs
    5 Hughes
    6 Robson
    7 Ronaldo
    8 Cantona
    9 Edwards
    10 Scholes
Travesty that mark hughes is not in there- a better player and person than rooney 100 times over and contibuted more to utd winning trophies than rooney (to date) by a 100 miles.
Travesty that bryan robson is not in there.

  185. fergie is the boss says:

bryanrobson’s my hereo – you kidding, scholes a borderline case, he is united’s greatest midfielder since charlton. and keane did not play long enough in the united team, even though ronaldo only had 2 good seasons out of 6, keane was on top of his game between 94 – 2002. Keane and scholes walk into the united’s greatest 10 players no questions asked. Cantona also if you are going on the lines they never did play long enough should not be in the top 10.

  186. willierednut says:

Ronaldo would get in my top 20 United players, but certainly not my top ten. Denis Violet anyone? What a striker. Noby Stiles, Jonny Carey, so many great and under rated United players.

  187. StatesideAussie says:

oops, messed up my stats on Joe Cassidy, it was 99 goals in 167 appearances, not 147 appearances.

  188. Utdforever says:

I love all United players.. even if they are shit LOL

  189. Utdforever says:

Well on second thought… maybe not, kleberson was totally pants

  190. willierednut says:

Ronaldo ahead Scholes? No fucking way! Keane wasn’t a goal scoring CM. Someone says Keane didn’t play long enough for United? 12 years at United, not long enough for you mate? Remember that performance at Juventus? He stepped up, when United needed him. A top class midfielder.

  191. smartalex says:

I hope these are my last words on this topic.

Costas, change your password. If you are the only unfortunate to have been compromised, you will be safe once more. It only takes hours to identify a password if the hacker has your encrypted password from another site, (eg his blog) The usurping of Ulster Red is not applicable, as a different name was used.

Alternatively, if there are numerous duplicates:
RoMs username database has been compromised, or the software allows blanks at the end of a username, which can easily be rectified.

  192. vika09 says:

I don’t see a passoword field for comments? What’s going on?!

  193. TheSean says:

I think the nail has been hit on the head by all the people coming on here and saying that they “only voted for players they’d seen” – whether or not they realise it, by doing that they are saying the players they’ve seen are better than those they haven’t, at least in terms of what the vote will tell us. Doesn’t really make it an “all time” list unfortunately – just a “best we’ve seen” list. Meh.

I don’t understand people saying Ronaldo (6 years, 291 games) doesn’t deserve to be there though, especially when almost everyone is happy to have Cantona (4.5 years, 185 games) on the list. I know Ronaldo wanted to leave, but he gave us nearly 300 games, the second half of which were largely astonishing, and has had nothing but glowing things to say about us since he left.

FTR, my top 11 – in chronological order – would be: Edwards, Charlton, Law, Best, Robson, Giggs, Schmeichel, Cantona, Keane, Scholes, Ronaldo. I can’t rank them, and (given that I’ve already cut Meredith, Rowley, Byrne, Taylor, Whiteside, Hughes, Brucey, Pally, Irwin, Citizen Neville, 20legend, Stam, Vidic and Evra, among others!), I can’t leave one out to make just 10. ;)

    no ruud? :(

  195. StatesideAussie says:

@TheSean … you’re right, and that’s why I didn’t vote and won’t suggest any names of my own. But as I pointed out earlier, there were some pretty good players way-back-when in the 1890s-1900s, at least judging by their records, and none of us would have seen them. So to a large extent, we’re all in the same boat when it comes to voting on a list of “all-time greats”. It’s all: meh.

  196. Brooka says:

Any list is subjective so one person’s opinion has no greater weight than another’s. But for anyone to suggest that Ronaldo should not be on that list is completely and utterly nuts!! The guy I would argue single handedly dragged us to the title on more than one occasion and it’s no coincidence that since he left the standard of our play has decreased dramatically. As a season ticket holder the product is good, but when Ronaldo was there you were guaranteed scintilating football. Without him we dropped at least one level. £80m says it all.

  197. jay says:

Ronaldo would shit on all the defenders back then so that is why a place him in the top 11. He was an entertainer with ability love him or hate him he was one of the best.

  198. Channy says:

WTF is Rooney doing on that list!?

  199. hammons says:

    FITB:
I agree that Ronaldo should have just barely made the top 10, but to score 42 goals in the modern-day era as a winger is something special, and he maintained the form the season after with 26. 68 goals in two seasons – including one in the UCL Final.

How many goals has Rooney scored this season? Three; so that takes his total to 37 – still five short of Ronaldo’s one season.

Nothing against you, or anyone else, but I am tired of reading that only girls voted for him – if that was the case then Beckham would not have received a single vote – especially after his lies that Scott did ever so well to point out.

  200. willierednut says:

    Ronaldo’s mum conducted the poll.

  201. jay says:

I do think Bryan Robson should be up there he was our modern day Steven Gerrard.

  202. King Eric says:

Oh jesus. Some comments have got to be a joke. Ronnie higher than Keano. Keano not played long enough. Schemical not good enough. Scholes Borderline? What the fuck?

  203. King Eric says:

Oh and Ronnie did more for this club than Eric. Perhaps in the fact he won a European Cup but did he fuck. Eric was the catalyst for all our success post 93.

  204. King Eric says:

jay – Gerrard isnt fit to lace Robbo’s New Balances’s mate.

  205. willierednut says:

King Eric – Aye no mate lol. Everyone of these polls will have different outcomes. I’m not dissing Ronaldo’s ability, he is a great player and I loved watching him play, but I wouldn’t have him in my top 10 United players. Remember, It’s all about OPINIONS.

  206. FletchTHEMAN says:

  207. StatesideAussie says:

@jay … “I do think Bryan Robson should be up there he was our modern day Steven Gerrard.” what, you mean he was a cunt? lol

  208. Belgo-Irish Red says:

No space for Rooney nor Beckham in there IMO.

  209. willierednut says:

Forlan!!!!! He made the dippers cry!!!!!!!

  210. uniteDtilLiDie says:

there are so many united greats!! should be top 20 or top 30..LOL

  211. jay says:

Robson carried United on his shoulders and captain for 12 years

  212. DAVE RED says:

    @saad.

Good points made over Duncan and Tommy Taylor – that would have been the likely outcome !!

  213. dannysoya says:

while i agree with the sean. i must also add that since i first started watching Manchester united i have been hearing about duncan edwards and dennis Law and george best. i mean to be hearing about them all the time surely must mean that they are really great. if they weren’t great i wouldn’t hear about them too much. i never saw them play but at least the fanfare surrounding them tells me that they are great. that should be the same for all those who voted.

  214. Dela says:

As time goes on Manchester United adds more and more fans worldwide. This has been the case for decades now so it’s no surprise that the likes of Ronaldo and Rooney have made it in there. Probably the vast majority of all United fans were born in the last 25 years. Of course it might not seem that way in Manchester, but the number of United fans outside Manchester dwarfs Manchester itself for sheer numbers. The truth is a lot of people don’t even know about the past greats, they only know the United they grew up with.

For example, I’m only 24, and if it wasn’t for my brother I’m sure I wouldn’t know much United history past the 90s simply because of my age, but my bro always bought anything with United on it, so all the VHS tapes, all the books etc. over the years he bought them up and I’ve seen them all and that’s how I know an awful lot about United’s history. I don’t see that being the same for 90%+ of all 24 year old United fans.

  215. MyCowIsTheBest says:

i thought i was the first one to highlight this in “carroll-and-torres-two-more-liars”

WTH Rooney is doing in that list?? I mean, Beckham, i can understand why. Ronaldo also, i can understand. RVN too. But Rooney ??? WTF?

Also, there is no need to pretend to know legends like Violet and Best and Sir Bobby so well just to show that you know the history of the club. Just, be honest! I am not saying anybody here is trying to show off his history wisdom, but since i am not that old enough to learn enough about Best, i am trying to do my best here with the list.

Still, Rooney at third is simply puzzling. He is a player so far away from fulfilling his potential, so far away from showing his true ability, and by that i dont mean 30+ goals a season, but 30+ goals per season for two or three consecutive seasons. I am a big fan of Rooney, i said it many times, i think Rooney has the potential to be the best thing ever in football, but he is just not anywhere near there yet. So for Rooney to be ahead of Solskjaer and Robbo, well, the voter must be only 12 years old at most!

  216. MyCowIsTheBest says:

    at tenth i mean sorry

  217. DohaRed says:

The whole thing is impossible – too many good players over the years, but if you had to pick one who had the most impact on setting the club on the glorious path of the last 15 years it has to be Cantona – no doubt.

Rooney – not yet, not before the Lawman or Ruud.

  218. Giles Oakley says:

Well said Bjorn and Saad, remembering names like Roberts, Meredith etc. There’s so many, such as ‘Give it to Joe’ Spence, Carey, Stan pearson, Rowley, Tommy Taylor, as well as Big Dunc. Even just including the players I’ve actually seen it’s well nigh impossible…

  219. gez says:

If these so called fans cant recognise our past greats and how much more they have given than any ronaldo, rooney or beckham, then we shouldnt recognise them as manchester united supporters.

  220. TonyBee says:

  226. willierednut says:

Mycowisthebest – I don’t think anyone is saying they know Best, SBC and Violet. But, It’s important to remember these players and not just the players nowadays.

  227. gazzer says:

    Couple of comments:
People are running down Rooney, perhaps because we like him a little less these days. However, he is much more than a goalscorer. He makes things happen in the buildup and creates goals for others. He is pretty much the indispensable player for England the last 5 or 6 years. He’s been really good since he was 16. He still has many years ahead of him.

With respect to Beckham. Remember how much Rooney loves Valencia because he understands that his job is to deliver the ball in a dangerous position. People like Nani (who can ever forget him nullifying Christiano’s goal against Spain!), Aaron Lennon, Shaun Wright Philips, Theo Walcott all either don’t know how to do that or don’t want to do it, and they have all felt Rooney’s wrath. Valencia is really good, but is not a patch on Beckham. Sure, others may be higher than him, but he deserves to up there somewhere.

  228. mattos000 says:

oh god dont get me started on this poll.. rooney and ronaldo are NOT united legends.

  229. gazzer says:

One other thing – when Charlton/Best/Law were in their prime, did united win the league year after year like they do these days? No. So you have to include a fair number of those that have been ever-present during the last 10-15 years. Keane/Giggs/Scholes in tier 1 at the very least, then in tier 2 you might see Beckham/Cristiano/RVN/Rio/Rooney/RedNev. Then there is Schmeichel/VDS.

You quickly see that it’s hard to limit yourself to just 10. And I haven’t even touched on one-offs like Duncan Edwards.

  230. Chuvannistelrooy says:

Guys, we should realise and be grateful that our club has so many legends that would make a “Top 20″ countdown difficult as well. We have been blessed with so many greats over the years and have a very rich history. Imagine Chelsea doing a Top 10 countdown, almost all the players would be from this generation!

  231. EliminateDuplicityNow! says:

Thank you StR for deleting the false ‘Costas’ comments.
Can we take it that the glitch has been resolved?
We look forward to the ‘Return of the Costas’

  232. seasonticketholder says:

Brilliant accolade… but the fact Dennis Law and Duncan Edwards are not on the list proves that the majority of the votes were either by kids or “Man U” fans!!

  233. Knobby6Styling says:

What abour Nobby Styles? The Original Combative Defensive Midfielder………….WTF

  234. willierednut says:

    What about Herbie Hide?

  235. NEED TO FEEL THE LOVE says:

  236. Roussane says:

well I dont know if Rooney deserves to be there in the top ten while Duncan Edwards and Bryan Robson were left out…i guess Duncan was there a long time back and faded from the memories, but Robson was there through the revival of the team after Busby era
and cmon…solskjaer not being there is sad..but i guess even though he was a very important member of the team, he was out for long periods of times which meant he couldnt influence the team that much..well i dnt know

  237. sports24x says:

    rooney should not be there…

  238. Cantona7 says:

Best must be first most naturally talented footballer the world has ever seen
