Would Missing Rio Be A ‘Big Loss’?

We are waiting to learn whether Rio Ferdinand will be missing for our second leg Champions League match against Inter Milan. After going over on his ankle at the weekend against Fulham, he is now a doubt for what could prove to be one of our defining matches of the season.

Jonny Evans, who has also suffered from injuries of late, is ready to fill in for him, which is encouraging, however Park Ji-Sung is concerned over what a big loss Rio’s absence would be.

“I don’t know if it is a big problem and I hope it isn’t,” said Park. “It would be a big loss for us if he missed the game, although Jonny has done very well for us this season and he can replace Rio and do well again. He gained experience from the match in the San Siro against them and I hope he can do okay.”

Whilst of course I wouldn’t be happy if Rio was missing, I think there are players who I would worry about more. This isn’t a reflection on Rio, who has had a brilliant season and plays an incrediby important role at our club, but more of my high opinion of Jonny Evans. I think for pretty much every position these days we have a brilliant replacement in the case of injury, however Evans is a player I’m really excited about and I like him being given the opportunity to prove himself, as he already has done against Inter and Chelsea this season.

the cowards (Inter) will be playin for a 0-0 & possibly a shootout.Evans n Vida will have a quiet night at CB.Rio can take a rest & be ready for d weekend

  2. Billy Meredith says:

Sounds like a plan wazza, although if he is able to train tomorrow, Rio & Nemanja all the way!

Johnny will do us proud if need be, as he has shown repeatedly. Rio best watch his back! :P

And… we don’t need to save Rio for the weekend, that would suggest some kind of threat.

In a Big Game like this you need all your top players fit and raring to go-Ferdinand has all the qualities and more of which you’d want for a great centre half, the guy oozes class.

No doubting Evans’ qualities though, everytime i see him he gets better and better. His ability belies his youth, for one so young he’s very assured and has shown his mettle when deputising this Season….he’s going to be a great CB for United for many moons to come!!

The problem lies with having a pile up of injuries to the back line which is wearing a little to thin for my liking. With the Bin Dippers just around the corner lets hope we dont pick up anymore knocks as we really need to give them a thrashing for there jammy win earlier in the year….couldn’t stand them Wankers getting a result of any sort except a battering.

I think Rio will make it and if O’Shea misses out Evans may have to deputise for him as i doubt SAF will risk young Fabio at RB even though i think he’s be a hit.

Lets put Maureen and his Girls to sleep!!

I’m a big fan of Jonny Evans (remember him for N. Ireland v Spain and how he handled Torres) and I’d have no qualms about him replacing Rio. But with doubts about O’Shea’s fitness I’d rather Rio was fit. Knowing our Champs League luck with centre halves someone will get injured anyway, so better to have Evans on the bench, especially with the dippers to come on Saturday.

  5. PossePossebon says:

I’d take Evans in there. He’s a world class player and such a revelation this season. He’s honestly walk into any other team in the world.

  6. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    would it be-no

with a fit jonny and vidic

    united are strong

    but a fit rio

    must start

  7. Adam says:

I think Rio is the man our defence misses the most so I’ll be absolutely gutted if he isn’t fit but as we know, Jonny Evans can do a job so I’m not that worried.

  8. King Eric says:

I would be fine with Evans if Rio not fit, as someone else pointed out yesterday Rio has been a bit “shaky” this past two or three games.

  9. Kings says:

If it was last season I would be concerned, but with the emergance of Jonny Evans and his masterclass performances in the big games – notably Chelsea twice and Inter away – we should be ok.

  10. denton davey says:

I agree with Giles Oakley – Jonny Evans for right back to stuff Maicon.

Rio is a terrific player – the best defender in the world although he has had a bit of a start-stop time this year and Vidic (second-best defender in the world) has had the opportunity to shine. Rio’s absence has enabled Jonny Evans to show that he’s damned-near as good as the other two ! Amazing squad depth, with Wesley and John O’Shea as deeper depth, if you get my drift.

I voted for option #3 – if Rio is absent it won’t be a nightmare but I would prefer his presence on the field on Wednesday because I put more stock in the CL game than in the derby with the RedScousers, who are out of the EPL race and are unlikely to win at OT, no matter what. Mostly, I don’t want to see us lose to TheMoaner.

  11. olusanjo says:

hi denton, if evans plays as our right back, he will face santon who is inter’s left back. maicon plays right back and so it will be evra that will stuff him. i really do not care who plays, if it is chester or evans or anyone, all i pray for is a 3 nil or 4 nil. and then welcome the scouse jokes.
