Michael Carrick’s testimonial was played on Sunday in front of over 70,000 people, including victims and their families of the recent terrorist attack in Manchester.

The player thanked the fans and expressed his surprise that so many people had attended.

The turn out is incredible. There’s no way I could have hoped for something like this. I know we get full houses every week here but it’s not something that I take for granted. To get what we’ve got today is sensational. I’m so proud. I can’t thank the fans enough.

At half-time, the game was at 1-1, and Carrick was impressed with some of the skill shown by the players, with most of those on the pitch having already retired.

It’s enjoyable. It’s obviously not the fastest game but there’s been bits of quality from the players. They’ve still got it. It’s fun.

Getting interviewed at half-time, Carrick joked that Sir Alex Ferguson, who was managing the United side, wouldn’t be impressed with the scoreline.
