Michael Carrick will almost certainly start on Wednesday night as we take on CSKA Moscow in the Luzhniki Stadium. Several players have been ruled out as unavailable but Carrick will be making the trip to the stadium where we won the European Cup in 2008.
Carrick says that was the best day of his career but is still haunted by what happened in Rome a year later.
“Without doubt Moscow was the best day of my career. Nothing tops that,” said Carrick. “But I do take more from the losses and the negatives. They are the things that spur me on. It is great when you are winning leagues and being successful but that night in Rome will haunt us for a long time. The only way to shake it off is to try and win it again. Until then it will still feel bitter. What happened that night still hurts.”
