Manchester United have confirmed that they have signed Phil Jones from Blackburn on a five year deal.

The teenager passed his medical last week and the deal has finally gone through today.

After Liverpool appeared to be the favourites to sign the young defender, who has already been tipped as future England captain, Sir Alex Ferguson secured a deal at the last minute. This didn’t stop Kenny Dalglish throwing an extra £6m at Blackburn in the desperate hope he could still get the player to join Liverpool. However, the youngster made his choice, rejecting offers from Spurs and Arsenal too.

Sky Sports are reporting that the fee paid is the original fee reported, £16.5m, which is the buy out clause written in to his contract with Blackburn which he signed in February.

A statement from Blackburn Rovers read: “Much as we’d love him to stay on with us – and we made all efforts to convince him to stay – Phil has to finally follow his heart.”

Welcome to United Phil Jones!
