One or two eye-brows were raised upon learning that Sir Alex Ferguson was in Spain whilst Manchester United were playing in the League Cup. In his 24 year time at the club, this was just the third game he’d missed.

Mike Phelan claimed it was just a scouting job, with the manager wanting to watch Valencia ahead of our Champions League group stage game against them.

However, goalkeeping coach Eric Steele’s presence suggesting our manager wasn’t just scouting out Valencia, but their 19-year-old goalie, David de Gea.

Ahead of the teams playing on Wednesday, de Gea has distanced himself from a move away.

“The important thing is that I have a contract here and I’m an Atletico player until 2013. That’s what matters,” he said. “The truth is that everything is turning out well here, and I’m with my family and my friends, which is what I need. I think that is very important. I have a contract until 2013, and when the year is out we’ll see if things are going well, and those who have to talk [about an extension] will talk.”
