Manchester United have today confirmed that Dean Henderson will miss out on the pre-season trip to Scotland with our first Premier League game less than two weeks away. A club statement revealed that he is expected to return to training again soon.

Dean Henderson will miss Manchester United’s Scotland training camp while he continues his recovery from prolonged fatigue after contracting a COVID-19 infection three weeks ago. He is expected to be training again soon.

This paves the way for David de Gea to make the no.1 shirt his own again, after losing out to Henderson for parts of last season, and being displaced by Atletico’s Unai Simon for the Euros for the national team.

De Gea initially lost his place in United’s starting team when going on leave following the birth of his daughter. By the time he returned, Henderson had been performing well enough to maintain Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s faith in him.

For the final game of the season, Solskjaer went with De Gea for the Europa League final, but the Spanish keeper failed to save all 11 of the penalties taken by Villarreal, before missing his own.

De Gea will be hoping that have extra time on the training ground ahead of the new season will mean he does enough to regain his no.1 shirt, despite his detractors, and start the 2021-22 season strongly.

However, the recent signing of Tom Heaton, who has rejoined the club after over decade away, could potentially throw a spanner in the works. While few people would have imagined he was brought back to have a starting role, he certainly will have his eye on playing time, and in Henderson’s absence should be providing the Spaniard with some competition.
