Di Maria: I must honour United’s shirt - Republik Of Mancunia: A Manchester United Blog

Angel di Maria won the free kick and delivered the resultant freekick that lead to Robin van Persie’s 94th minute equaliser against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Argentinean has spoken of his delight of signing for Manchester United and insists he will honour wearing the famous number seven shirt.

I have these amazing feelings about having moved to Man United. I’m so proud of myself, you know. It’s hard to explain it and put it in words. I wanted to wear this shirt. And it is so nice for me to wear the number seven shirt. It was worn by some of the greatest players in the club’s history and I do know that it is a huge thing for all Man United fans. I think people here are happy with me. So I must honour this shirt. I must confess that I had all these expectations – but Man United have exceeded my expectations. It has all been perfect for me so far.

Actually most South Americans have humble backgrounds, football is one of the rare route to riches for them. Would probably explain why many top players come from South American, that natural flair to add to the hardwork needed to get scouts attention.

Marq - do you reckon that's why a lot of south Americans lose interest at early age, theyve worked and got the riches, they then love the party lifestyle toi much, I was listening to a south America expert a few months back and he was saying pretty much that, ronaldinho being the prime example really

I believe so. They always say, the harder the success, the sweeter it is. Of course they will party hard.

You could also say since South American players based their football on skills, so when they hit 30, the legs and reactions slow down a notch, making them less effective, compared that to Europeans who are more about strength & passing, so age doesn't catch up to them as badly. So rather than lose interest, their loss of effectiveness hits them harder, hence they drop into the background earlier
