RoM was on the receiving end from quite a bit of flack from Arsenal fans after the signing of Mikael Silvestre. Whilst Silvestre was always a loyal servant and a model professional (apart from that one blip against Arsenal, when he hilariously headbutted Freddie Ljungberg) he often was, if we put it kindly, unlucky. Lapses in concentration were too often costly for the team and there have been periods where audible groans were heard when Silvestre was named in the starting line-up.

The very fact that Sir Alex Ferguson was happy to let Silvestre join one of our supposed title rivals speaks volumes about his ability. We all remember the fuss Fergie kicked up over Gabriel Heinze’s potential move to Liverpool, don’t we?

Well, 109 minutes in to his Arsenal career, Silvestre has had one of his ‘moments’, scoring an own goal in their Champions League game tonight. That’s experience for you!

The Guardian:

19 min: SLAPSTICK OWN GOAL! Fenerbahce 1-2 Arsenal. Guiza gets on the end of a deep free kick and volleys it from the right-hand edge of the area across the face of goal. At which point Silvestre, in the centre, takes a wild slash at the ball and puts it in his own net. That is terrible.

Poor Silly!
