Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen believes the Red Devils are not ready to challenge for top honours despite signing Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha this summer.

United finished in 15th place in the Premier League last term after an underwhelming campaign summarised by a limp loss to 17th-placed Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.

Desperate to avoid a repeat of the 2024/25 season, Man United have strengthened their underwhelming frontline, signing Mbeumo and Cunha for over £120 million to revitalise the attack.

Still, Meulensteen warns that it may take some time before Man United can recapture its former glory.

“They should start challenging again at some point,” he said (via Manchester Utd News). “I don’t think it will happen overnight, as there are too many things on and off the pitch that are not helping.

“It will be interesting to see how they fare over the next six months. If they don’t start well, the players will be under the same pressure as previously.

“The only way to get rid of it is to win and keep winning. That is the only way United can start closing the gap on the other top clubs.

“There are a lot of things that need to change, but I like the two signings they have made this summer (Cunha and Mbeumo).”

Man United are about to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko to further strengthen their bid to return to the Premier League’s upper echelon. He could be the third addition.

The Red Devils should have more firepower ahead of next season, but will it be enough to challenge for the Premier League and cup titles?

Man United still need midfield additions (View)

Manchester United cannot ignore the gaping hole in the centre of the park. Ruben Amorim’s squad needs athletic legs to shield the defence.

Casemiro is experiencing a decline, while Manuel Ugarte has been underwhelming since his move from Paris Saint-Germain.

United could use an upgrade in midfield and should endeavour to sign one before the close of the transfer window.

Man United should consider a move for Sevilla ace Lucien Agoume. Long-tipped for great things, the 23-year-old has taken time to find his groove.

Agoume is a ball-winning machine and calm in possession. He is fairly tall, athletic, and covers ground.

The Frenchman helps teammates to double up on potential threats and mops up well in front of the defence.

He would be a brilliant pick-up for Man United, and the club should move quickly.
