Manchester United have today confirmed that Juan Mata is leaving the club this summer after eight and a half seasons at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard joined us in January 2014 and offered a small glimpse of hope in what was otherwise a depressing situation under the leadership of David Moyes. The excitement of the fanbase when we saw the first images of him after arriving at Carrington by helicopter was off the scale.

Close to 300 games later, with an FA Cup final goal, a further two winners’ medals from the League Cup and Europa League, three goals against rivals Liverpool and two against City, Mata is leaving the club.

The club’s official website offered thanks to Mata when announcing his departure.

Thank you for dedicating eight years of your career to United, Juan. Everyone at the club wishes you all the best for the future.
