Ahead of Saturday’s clash against Arsenal, I thought I’d give you something to pass the time during this s l o w news day.
European Cup semi-final, 5.5.09, Arsenal 1 – 3 Manchester United
Manchester United went to the Emirates for the Champions League semi-final with a narrow 1-0 lead, thanks to a John O’Shea goal. Manuel Almunia had a brilliant game and kept Arsenal in the tie after we dominated them.
The Arsenal players and managers told the press we would live to regret not making the most of our dominance when we went to their ground.
They dipped in to their budget and forked out money for thousands of plastic Arsenal flags for the fans. Ooh they were so pleased with themselves. Sadly, those opening few minutes were as good as it got for Arsenal as we went on to rip them to shreds on their own pitch and they poured out of the stadium after just an hour.
With eleven minutes played it was game over as Arsenal were given a footballing lesson from the Champions. Our third goal was the best of the lot, taking just ten seconds to get the ball from our box to theirs, counter-attacking football at its finest.
Our former title rivals were left humiliated whilst we were triumphant, on the way to our second European Cup final in a row.
Arsenal fans promised they would get their own back in a few weeks time when we met them in the league but fortunately the point we gained against them that day was enough to win the league before the final day of the season. All together now: We won the league at Old Trafford, we won the league in Manchester!
