Fergie Blames Nani For Chelsea Defeat

Manchester United fielded a team of second string players and youngsters at Chelsea tonight, with Rafael da Silva the only player to remain from the starting XI from Sunday’s game.

Chelsea sent off £75m worth of talent from the bench to get the game won, having gone behind three times, whilst United brought on 18-year-old Nick Powell, 19-year-old Ryan Tunnicliffe and 21-year-old Federico Macheda.

Given how many starting XI players were in Chelsea’s side, it’s a credit to our team that the first time we went behind was in extra time.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson hasn’t singled out Nani for criticism, despite him scoring a quality goal that put us 3-2 up, after losing possession in the last minute of injury time which enabled Chelsea to win a penalty.

“We gave the ball away for the third goal,” he said. “We were in complete control of the match at that point, playing really good football and all we needed to do was see the game out and keep possession. Nani decided to try and beat a player, lost the ball and we ended up conceding a penalty kick. It’s disappointing [to go out]. Some of our football was terrific. Our counter-attacking was very good, but if you are winning 3-2 in the final seconds of the game then you should see it out. We only have ourselves to blame, really.”
