With over ten minutes left to play this afternoon, Ashley Cole got away with just a yellow card for a vicious challenge on Javier Hernandez. Phil Dowd opted just to book the defender, although he certainly should have received a straight red. A penalty wasn’t given because the ball had already gone out of play by the time Cole’s studs reached Chicharito.
Sir Alex Ferguson has reflected on Cole’s behaviour today, almost certainly referring to the treatment Antonio Valencia got from the Chelsea man when we beat them last season.
“It was a shocking tackle,” Fergie said. “The referee booked him, so I don’t understand why he hasn’t given a penalty. Ashley Cole is very reckless at times. He is committed of course but being committed you can sometimes go over the edge a bit. That was an example of that.”
