United have lost on their past two visits to Upton Park, which was a result we really could have done without today, bearing in mind Liverpool’s flukey win against Portsmouth yesterday.
A great goal from Ryan Giggs meant we didn’t have to hear about Liverpool’s resurgence though, with all attention on us returning to the top of the table and going a thirteenth game without conceding.
Ferguson has stressed the importance of our experience in getting through games like today. It was a perfect ball from Paul Scholes that lead to the great run and good finish from Giggs today, showing these old pros still have plenty to give this club in this season’s title race.
“We felt today, knowing that West Ham is always a difficult ground for us, that we should have the most experience we can,” Ferguson said. “Ryan and Paul Scholes have been here so many times and they know exactly what is needed here. Michael Carrick, Carlos Tevez and Rio Ferdinand are former players here and that also helps actually to handle the atmosphere. It was a fantastic atmosphere and they really get behind their team, and we’ve beaten a very good team today.”
