Ahead of England’s game against Scotland, former red and captain of his country, Darren Fletcher, has sung the praises of England captain Wayne Rooney.
Rooney has been booed in recent games for England and Fletcher has insisted he deserves more respect.
I look at Wayne’s situation and think it’s sad that you have England’s all-time record goalscorer being booed. After everything Wayne gives to keep playing for his country, after turning out that many times, he deserves better. He keeps turning up and has been a stalwart for years — and in my view the analysis of his recent form has been over the top.
It’s true Wayne’s probably not reached the level he can from the beginning of the season. But I have watched United and I don’t feel he is playing that badly. As a team they are not really clicking and he is part of that team. But when you are the captain, and you have been there the longest, and you have all the caps behind you, that sometime makes you the one who takes the brunt.
Wayne’s experiencing that just now. He won’t be enjoying it, but I can tell you for sure he will be determined to put it right. And I wouldn’t write off Wayne Rooney now, because the determination he has shown to get where he is in his career will probably see him come through this — and out of it even stronger.
