Dean Henderson started the season hoping he could again usurp David de Gea as Manchester United’s no.1 but the goalkeeper has barely had a look in this season, even in the cup competitions.

After making 26 appearances last season, with half of those coming in the league, he has played on just three occasions for the first team this campaign, facing West Ham in a 1-0 defeat in the League Cup, Young Boys in a 1-1 draw in the Champions League, and in the FA Cup game against Middlesbrough which finished 1-1, but United lost 8-7 on penalties with the opposition scoring all of theirs.

The Evening News reported that Newcastle were in the final stages of securing Henderson’s services, either on loan or a permanent deal, but in Eddie Howe’s press conference ahead of the final game of the season he claimed this report was false.

We’re not close to signing anybody at this moment at time. We’re not at any advanced stage with that. It’s very difficult for me to comment on individual players because I’d be giving you an answer on every target, but that’s far from the truth.

It has been suggested then new manager Erik ten Hag is keen to keep De Gea as his first choice for next season meaning Henderson, now 25-years-old, will be looking for a move away from the club in the summer, even if Newcastle doesn’t turn out to be his destination.
