Ahead of United’s game against Arsenal, journalists and rival fans were claiming that if United lost they could no longer be considered title contenders.
United were deserved winners anyway, making the point irrelevant, but Phil Jones has claimed that the players enjoy being hated because it means they are doing something right.
“People want us to fail because we’ve won the league so many times,” said Jones. “United won the league long before I was here and everyone hates the best clubs, it’s as simple as that. But we enjoy that. We relish the test we get thrown at us week-in, week-out. It proves when people doubt us that we’re more than capable of standing up for ourselves and proving to people that’s why we were champions last season. We weren’t champions for nothing. We thoroughly deserved all the points we got last season. This is a step in the right direction going into a busy period.”
