Before each match at Old Trafford, The Stone Roses – This Is The One is played. Ian Brown, the band’s frontman, is a massive red, who grew up in Timperley and names Eric Cantona as his favourite player.

He once picked up an NME award but told organisers he would only come to receive it if a member of United’s 1999 Treble winning side presented it to him. Teddy Sheringham did the honours.

He has today reminded this country exactly what we think of England.

When asked about his favourite United chant he responded: “‘He plays on the left, he plays on the right, that boy Ronaldo makes England look shite’. That’s what I love about United: we’re the Republic of Mancunia, no one gives a fuck about England. My next favourite would be ‘You can stick yer fucking England up yer arse”, which we sing to Chelsea and the London clubs. I love that. When we sing ”Argentina” when Tevez comes on, you see the away fans with open mouths. What other club in England would sing ”Argentina”? Nobody. I love that.”
